Breakdown of the rotating-wave approximation in entanglement description of spin anti-correlated states

It is well established that an entanglement encoded in the Bell states of a two-qubit system with correlated spins exhibits completely different evolution properties than that encoded in states with the anti-correlated spins. A complete and abrupt loss of the entanglement, called the entanglement sudden death, can be found to occur for the spin correlated states, but the entanglement evolves without any discontinuity or decays asymptotically for the spin anti-correlated states. We consider the evolution of an initial entanglement encoded in the spin anti-correlated states and demonstrate that the asymptotic behavior predicted before occurs only in the weak coupling limit or equivalently when the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is made on the interaction Hamiltonian of the qubits with the field. If we do not restrict ourselves to the RWA, we find that the entanglement undergoes a discontinuity, the sudden death phenomenon. We illustrate this behavior by employing an efficient scheme for entanglement evolution between two cold-trapped atoms located inside a single-mode cavity. Although only a single excitation is initially present in the system, we find that the two-photon excited state, which plays the key role for the discontinuity in the behavior of the entanglement, gains a population over a short time of the evolution. When the RWA is made on the interaction, the two-photon excited state remains unpopulated for all times and the discontinuity is absent. We attribute this phenomenon to the principle of complementarity between the evolution time and energy, and the presence of the counter-rotating terms in the interaction Hamiltonian.

Generation of pure continuous-variable entangled cluster states of four separate atomic ensembles in a ring cavity

A practical scheme is proposed for creation of continuous variable entangled cluster states of four distinct atomic ensembles located inside a high-finesse ring cavity. The scheme does not require a set of external input squeezed fields, a network of beam splitters and measurements. It is based on nothing else than the dispersive interaction between the atomic ensembles and the cavity mode and a sequential application of laser pulses of a suitably adjusted amplitudes and phases. We show that the sequential laser pulses drive the atomic "field modes" into pure squeezed vacuum states. The state is then examined against the requirement to belong to the class of cluster states. We illustrate the method on three examples of the entangled cluster states, the so-called continuous variable linear, square and T-type cluster states.

Cavity-induced giant Kerr nonlinearities in a driven V-type atom

We discuss a simple and experimentally realizable model for creation of enhanced Kerr nonlinearities accompanied by vanishing absorption. The model involves a V-type atom subjected to a strong drive laser, a weak probe laser and coupled to a single-mode cavity field. Working in the bad-cavity limit, we find that the simultaneous coupling of the cavity field to both atomic transitions creates a coherence between the transitions and thus can lead to quantum interference effects. We investigate the influences of the cavity field frequency, the cavity field-atom coupling constants and the atomic decay constants on the linear and the third-order (Kerr) nonlinear susceptibilities. We predict giant Kerr nonlinearities with vanishing absorption and attribute this effect to the combination of the Purcell effect and the cavity-induced quantum interference.

Squeezed single-atom laser in a photonic crystal

We study non-classical and spectral properties of a strongly driven single-atom laser engineered within a photonic crystal that facilitates a frequency-dependent reservoir. In these studies, we apply a dressed atom model approach to derive the master equation of the system and study the properties of the dressed laser under the frequency dependent transition rates. By going beyond the secular approximation in the dressed-atom cavity field interaction, we find that if, in addition, the non-secular terms are included into the dynamics of the system, then non-linear processes can occur that lead to interesting new aspects of cavity field behavior. We calculate variances of the quadrature phase amplitudes and the incoherent part of the spectrum of the cavity field and show that they differ qualitatively from those observed under the secular approximation. In particular, it is found that the non-linear processes lead to squeezing of the fluctuations of the cavity field below the quantum shot noise limit. The squeezing depends on the relative population of the dressed states of the system and is found only if there is no population inversion between the dressed states. Furthermore, we find a linewidth narrowing below the quantum limit in the spectrum of the cavity field that is achieved only when the secular approximation is not made. An interpretation of the linewidth narrowing is provided in terms of two phase dependent noise (squeezing) spectra that make up the incoherent spectrum. We establish that the linewidth narrowing is due squeezing of the fluctuations in one quadrature phase components of the cavity field.
