The fundamental Lepage form in two independent variables: a generalization using order-reducibility

A second-order generalization of the fundamental Lepage form of geometric calculus of variations over fibered manifolds with 2-dimensional base is described by means of insisting on (i) equivalence relation "Lepage differential 2-form is closed if and only if the associated Lagrangian is trivial" and, (ii) the principal component of Lepage form, extending the well-known Poincaré-Cartan form, preserves order prescribed by a given Lagrangian. This approach completes several attempts of finding a Lepage equivalent of a second-order Lagrangian possessing condition (i), which is well-known for first-order Lagrangians in field theory due to Krupka and Betounes.

On the Carathéodory form in higher-order variational field theory

The Carathéodory form of the calculus of variations belongs to the class of Lepage equivalents of first-order Lagrangians in field theory. Here, this equivalent is generalized for second- and higher-order Lagrangians by means of intrisic geometric operations applied to the well-known Poincaré--Cartan form and principal component of Lepage forms, respectively. For second-order theory, our definition coincides with the previous result obtained by Crampin and Saunders in a different way. The Carathéodory equivalent of the Hilbert Lagrangian in general relativity is discussed.

On a global Lagrangian construction for ordinary variational equations on 2-manifolds

Locally variational systems of differential equations on smooth manifolds, having certain de Rham cohomology group trivial, automatically possess a global Lagrangian. This important result due to Takens is, how-ever, of sheaf-theoretic nature. A new constructive method of finding a global Lagrangian for second-order ODEs on 2-manifolds is described on the basis of solvability of exactness equation for Lepage 2-forms, and the top-cohomology theorems. Examples from geometry and mechanics are discussed.

Variational submanifolds of Euclidean spaces

Systems of ordinary differential equations (or dynamical forms in Lagrangian mechanics), induced by embeddings of smooth fibered manifolds over one-dimensional basis, are considered in the class of variational equations. For a given non-variational system, conditions assuring variationality (the Helmholtz conditions) of the induced system with respect to a submanifold of a Euclidean space are studied, and the problem of existence of these "variational submanifolds" is formulated in general and solved for second-order systems. The variational sequence theory on sheaves of differential forms is employed as a main tool for analysis of local and global aspects (variationality and variational triviality). The theory is illustrated by examples of holonomic constraints (submanifolds of a configuration Euclidean space) which are variational submanifolds in geometry and mechanics.

The fundamental Lepage form in variational theory for submanifolds

A setting for global variational geometry on Grassmann fibrations is presented. The integral variational functionals for finite dimensional immersed submanifolds are studied by means of the fundamental Lepage equivalent of a homogeneous Lagrangian, which can be regarded as a generalization of the well-known Hilbert form in the classical mechanics. Prolongations of immersions, diffeomorphisms and vector fields to the Grassmann fibrations are introduced as geometric tools for the variations of immersions. The first infinitesimal variation formula together with its consequences, the Euler-Lagrange equations for extremal submanifolds and the Noether theorem for invariant variational functionals are proved. The theory is illustrated on the variational functional for minimal submanifolds.
