Square roots of nearly planar graphs

We prove that it is NP-hard to decide whether a graph is the square of a 6-apex graph. This shows that the square root problem is not tractable for squares of sparse graphs (or even graphs from proper minor-closed classes).

Maximum edge colouring problem on graphs that exclude a fixed minor

The maximum edge colouring problem considers the maximum colour assignment to edges of a graph under the condition that every vertex has at most a fixed number of distinct coloured edges incident on it. If that fixed number is $q$ we call the colouring a maximum edge $q$-colouring. The problem models a non-overlapping frequency channel assignment question on wireless networks. The problem has also been studied from a purely combinatorial perspective in the graph theory literature. We study the question when the input graph is sparse. We show the problem remains $NP$-hard on $1$-apex graphs. We also show that there exists $PTAS$ for the problem on minor-free graphs. The $PTAS$ is based on a recently developed Baker game technique for proper minor-closed classes, thus avoiding the need to use any involved structural results. This further pushes the Baker game technique beyond the problems expressible in the first-order logic.

Clustered coloring of (path+2K_1)-free graphs on surfaces

Esperet and Joret proved that planar graphs with bounded maximum degree are 3-colorable with bounded clustering. Liu and Wood asked whether the conclusion holds with the assumption of the bounded maximum degree replaced by assuming that no two vertices have many common neighbors. We answer this question in positive, in the following stronger form: Let P''_t be the complete join of two isolated vertices with a path on t vertices. For any surface Sigma, a subgraph-closed class of graphs drawn on Sigma is 3-choosable with bounded clustering if and only if there exists t such that P''_t does not belong to the class.

A note on local search for hitting sets

Let $π$ be a property of pairs $(G,Z)$, where $G$ is a graph and $Z\subseteq V(G)$. In the \emph{minimum $π$-hitting set problem}, given an input graph $G$, we want to find a smallest set $X\subseteq V(G)$ such that $X$ intersects every set $Z\subseteq V(G)$ such that $(G,Z)$ has the property $π$. An important special case is that $π$ is satisfied by $(G,Z)$ exactly if $G[Z]$ is isomorphic to one of graphs in a finite set $\mathcal{F}$; in this \emph{minimum $\mathcal{F}$-hitting set} problem, $X$ needs to hit all appearances of the graphs from $\mathcal{F}$ as induced subgraphs of $G$. In this note, we show that the local search argument of Har-Peled and Quanrud gives a PTAS for the minimum $\mathcal{F}$-hitting set problem for graphs from any class with polynomial expansion. Moreover, we argue that the local search argument applies more generally to all properties $π$ such that one can test whether $X$ is a $π$-hitting set in polynomial time and $G[Z]$ has bounded diameter whenever $(G,Z)$ satisfies $π$; this is a common generalization of the minimum $\mathcal{F}$-hitting set problem and minimum $r$-dominating set problem. Finaly, we note that the analogous claim also holds for the dual problem of finding the maximum number of disjoint sets $Z$ such that $(G,Z)$ has the property $π$; this generalizes maximum $F$-matching, maximum induced $F$-matching, and maximum $r$-independent set problems.

Embedded graph 3-coloring and flows

A graph drawn in a surface is a near-quadrangulation if the sum of the lengths of the faces different from 4-faces is bounded by a fixed constant. We leverage duality between colorings and flows to design an efficient algorithm for 3-precoloring-extension in near-quadrangulations of orientable surfaces. Furthermore, we use this duality to strengthen previously known sufficient conditions for 3-colorability of triangle-free graphs drawn in orientable surfaces.

An efficient implementation and a strengthening of Alon-Tarsi list coloring method

As one of the first applications of the polynomial method in combinatorics, Alon and Tarsi gave a way to prove that a graph is choosable (colorable from any lists of prescribed size). We describe an efficient way to implement this approach, making it feasible to test choosability of graphs with around 70 edges. We also show that in case that Alon-Tarsi method fails to show that the graph is choosable, further coefficients of the graph polynomial provide constraints on the list assignments from which the graph cannot be colored. This often enables us to confirm colorability from a given list assignment, or to decide choosability by testing just a few list assignments. The implementation can be found at https://gitlab.mff.cuni.cz/dvorz9am/alon-tarsi-method.

On density of $Z_3$-flow-critical graphs

For an abelian group $Γ$, a graph $G$ is said to be $Γ$-flow-critical if $G$ does not admit a nowhere-zero $Γ$-flow, but for each edge $e\in E(G)$, the contraction $G/e$ has a nowhere-zero $Γ$-flow. A bound on the density of $Z_3$-flow-critical graphs drawn on a fixed surface is obtained, generalizing the planar case of the bound on the density of 4-critical graphs by Kostochka and Yancey.

Representation of short distances in structurally sparse graphs

A partial orientation $\vec{H}$ of a graph $G$ is a weak $r$-guidance system if for any two vertices at distance at most $r$ in $G$, there exists a shortest path $P$ between them such that $\vec{H}$ directs all but one edge in $P$ towards this edge. In case $\vec{H}$ has bounded maximum outdegree, this gives an efficient representation of shortest paths of length at most $r$ in $G$. We show that graphs from many natural graph classes admit such weak guidance systems, and study the algorithmic aspects of this notion.

Asymptotic dimension of intersection graphs

We show that intersection graphs of compact convex sets in R^n of bounded aspect ratio have asymptotic dimension at most 2n+1. More generally, we show this is the case for intersection graphs of systems of subsets of any metric space of Assouad-Nagata dimension n that satisfy the following condition: For each r,s>0 and every point p, the number of pairwise-disjoint elements of diameter at least s in the system that are at distance at most r from p is bounded by a function of r/s.

Weak diameter coloring of graphs on surfaces

Consider a graph $G$ drawn on a fixed surface, and assign to each vertex a list of colors of size at least two if $G$ is triangle-free and at least three otherwise. We prove that we can give each vertex a color from its list so that each monochromatic connected subgraph has bounded weak diameter (i.e., diameter measured in the metric of the whole graph $G$, not just the subgraph). In case that $G$ has bounded maximum degree, this implies that each connected monochromatic subgraph has bounded size. This solves a problem of Esperet and Joret for planar triangle-free graphs, and extends known results in the general case to the list setting, answering a question of Wood.

Induced odd cycle packing number, independent sets, and chromatic number

The induced odd cycle packing number $iocp(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that $G$ contains an induced subgraph consisting of $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint odd cycles. Motivated by applications to geometric graphs, Bonamy et al.~\cite{indoc} proved that graphs of bounded induced odd cycle packing number, bounded VC dimension, and linear independence number admit a randomized EPTAS for the independence number. We show that the assumption of bounded VC dimension is not necessary, exhibiting a randomized algorithm that for any integers $k\ge 0$ and $t\ge 1$ and any $n$-vertex graph $G$ of induced odd cycle packing number at most $k$ returns in time $O_{k,t}(n^{k+4})$ an independent set of $G$ whose size is at least $α(G)-n/t$ with high probability. In addition, we present $χ$-boundedness results for graphs with bounded odd cycle packing number, and use them to design a QPTAS for the independence number only assuming bounded induced odd cycle packing number.

Coloring count cones of planar graphs

For a plane near-triangulation $G$ with the outer face bounded by a cycle $C$, let $n^\star_G$ denote the function that to each $4$-coloring $ψ$ of $C$ assigns the number of ways $ψ$ extends to a $4$-coloring of $G$. The block-count reducibility argument (which has been developed in connection with attempted proofs of the Four Color Theorem) is equivalent to the statement that the function $n^\star_G$ belongs to a certain cone in the space of all functions from $4$-colorings of $C$ to real numbers. We investigate the properties of this cone for $|C|=5$, formulate a conjecture strengthening the Four Color Theorem, and present evidence supporting this conjecture.

Approximation metatheorems for classes with bounded expansion

We give a number of approximation metatheorems for monotone maximization problems expressible in the first-order logic, in substantially more general settings than the previously known. We obtain * constant-factor approximation algorithm in any class of graphs with bounded expansion, * a QPTAS in any class with strongly sublinear separators, and * a PTAS in any fractionally treewidth-fragile class (which includes all common classes with strongly sublinear separators. Moreover, our tools also give an exact subexponential-time algorithm in any class with strongly sublinear separators.

On weighted sublinear separators

Consider a graph G with an assignment of costs to vertices. Even if G and all its subgraphs admit balanced separators of sublinear size, G may only admit a balanced separator of sublinear cost after deleting a small set Z of exceptional vertices. We improve the bound on |Z| from O(log |V(G)|) to O(log log...log |V(G)|), for any fixed number of iterations of the logarithm.

Triangle-free planar graphs with at most $64^{n^{0.731}}$ 3-colorings

Thomassen conjectured that triangle-free planar graphs have exponentially many 3-colorings. Recently, he disproved his conjecture by providing examples of such graphs with $n$ vertices and at most $2^{15n/\log_2 n}$ 3-colorings. We improve his construction, giving examples of such graphs with at most $64^{n^{log_{9/2} 3}}<64^{n^{0.731}}$ 3-colorings. We conjecture this exponent is optimal.

Bounded maximum degree conjecture holds precisely for $c$-crossing-critical graphs with $c \leq 12$

We study $c$-crossing-critical graphs, which are the minimal graphs that require at least $c$ edge-crossings when drawn in the plane. For every fixed pair of integers with $c\ge 13$ and $d\ge 1$, we give first explicit constructions of $c$-crossing-critical graphs containing a vertex of degree greater than $d$. We also show that such unbounded degree constructions do not exist for $c\le 12$, precisely, that there exists a constant $D$ such that every $c$-crossing-critical graph with $c\le 12$ has maximum degree at most $D$. Hence, the bounded maximum degree conjecture of $c$-crossing-critical graphs, which was generally disproved in 2010 by Dvořák and Mohar (without an explicit construction), holds true, surprisingly, exactly for the values $c\le 12.$

Approximation schemes for bounded distance problems on fractionally treewidth-fragile graphs

We give polynomial-time approximation schemes for monotone maximization problems expressible in terms of distances (up to a fixed upper bound) and efficiently solvable in graphs of bounded treewidth. These schemes apply in all fractionally treewidth-fragile graph classes, a property that is true for many natural graph classes with sublinear separators. We also provide quasipolynomial-time approximation schemes for these problems in all classes with sublinear separators.

Weak Coloring Numbers of Intersection Graphs

Weak and strong coloring numbers are generalizations of the degeneracy of a graph, where for each natural number $k$, we seek a vertex ordering such every vertex can (weakly respectively strongly) reach in $k$ steps only few vertices with lower index in the ordering. Both notions capture the sparsity of a graph or a graph class, and have interesting applications in the structural and algorithmic graph theory. Recently, the first author together with McCarty and Norin observed a natural volume-based upper bound for the strong coloring numbers of intersection graphs of well-behaved objects in $\mathbb{R}^d$, such as homothets of a centrally symmetric compact convex object, or comparable axis-aligned boxes. In this paper, we prove upper and lower bounds for the $k$-th weak coloring numbers of these classes of intersection graphs. As a consequence, we describe a natural graph class whose strong coloring numbers are polynomial in $k$, but the weak coloring numbers are exponential. We also observe a surprising difference in terms of the dependence of the weak coloring numbers on the dimension between touching graphs of balls (single-exponential) and hypercubes (double-exponential).
