Analytical Soft Functions for Heavy-Quark Final States at Hadron Colliders

We present the first computation of the complete two-loop, fully-differential soft function describing the production of a heavy-quark pair in association with a color-singlet system at hadron colliders. This result constitutes one of the most complex soft functions known to date and it is obtained in closed analytic form for generic multi-dimensional kinematics. This allows us to obtain novel analytic results for the transverse-momentum-dependent and threshold soft functions in this class of processes. We further obtain a decomposition of the soft function into dipole and tripole color correlators, thereby supplying essential building blocks for processes involving a heavy-quark pair produced together with additional light jets at both hadron and lepton colliders. These results represent a key ingredient for advancing precision predictions for heavy-quark physics at the LHC.

The two-loop fully differential soft function for $Q\bar{Q}V$ production at lepton colliders

We consider the production of a pair of heavy quarks $Q\bar{Q}$ in association with a generic colour singlet system $V$ at lepton colliders, and present the first analytic calculation of the two-loop soft function differential in the total momentum of the real radiation. The calculation is performed by reducing the relevant Feynman integrals into a canonical basis of master integrals by means of integration-by-parts identities. The resulting integrals are then evaluated by solving a system of differential equations in the kinematic invariants, whose boundary conditions are determined analytically with some care due to the presence of Coulomb singularities. The fully differential soft function is expressed in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms. This result is an essential ingredient for a range of N$^3$LL resummations for key collider observables at lepton colliders, such as the $Q\bar{Q}V$ production cross section at threshold and observables sensitive to the total transverse momentum of the radiation in heavy-quark final states. Moreover, it constitutes the complete final-final dipole contribution to the fully differential soft function needed for the description of $Q\bar{Q}V$ production at hadron colliders, which plays an important role in the LHC physics programme.

Centrality-dependent modification of hadron and jet production in electron-nucleus collisions

Centrality-dependent measurements of hadron and jet cross section attenuation in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei can shed new light on the physics of final-state interactions in the nuclear matter, including the path-length dependence of the in-medium parton shower formation and evolution. Recent simulation studies have demonstrated the feasibility of experimental centrality determination in $e$A reactions at the electron-ion collider via neutron detection in the zero-degree calorimeter. Motivated by these results, we present the first theoretical calculation of the production rate modification for hadrons and jets in central and peripheral $e$Pb collisions. We find that the variation in the suppression of inclusive jet cross section as a function of centrality is less than a factor of two. In more differential measurements, such as the distribution of hadrons versus the hadronization fraction $z_h$, the difference can be enhanced up to an order of magnitude.

Factorization at Next-to-Leading Power and Endpoint Divergences in $gg\to h$ Production

We derive a factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson production amplitude in gluon-gluon fusion induced by a light-quark loop, working at next-to-leading power in soft-collinear effective theory. The factorization is structurally similar to that obtained for the $h\toγγ$ decay amplitude induced by a light-quark loop, but additional complications arise because of external color charges. We show how the refactorization-based subtraction scheme developed in previous work leads to a factorization theorem free of endpoint divergences. We use renormalization-group techniques to predict the logarithmically enhanced terms in the three-loop $gg\to h$ form factor of order $α_s^3\ln^k(-M_h^2/m_b^2)$ with $k=6,5,4,3$. We also resum the first three towers of leading logarithms, $α_s^n\ln^{2n-k}(-M_h^2/m_b^2)$ with $k=0,1,2$, to all orders of perturbation theory.

Infrared singularities of multi-leg QCD amplitudes with a massive parton at three loops

We derive the structure of three-loop anomalous dimensions governing infrared singularities of QCD amplitudes with one massive and an arbitrary number of massless external partons. The contributions of tripole and quadrupole correlations involving a massive parton are studied in details. The analytical expression of tripole correlations between one massive and two massless partons is obtained at three loops for the first time. We regularize the infrared divergences in the soft matrix element in a novel approach, where no extra scale dependence is involved, and the calculation can be performed in momentum space. Our results are essential to improve the theoretical predictions of single top and top quark pair productions at hadron colliders.

Heavy flavor jet production and substructure in electron-nucleus collisions

Deep inelastic scattering on nuclei at the Electron-Ion Collider will open new opportunities to investigate the structure of matter. Heavy flavor-tagged jets are complementary probes of the partonic composition and transport coefficients of large nuclei, but introduce a new mass scale that modifies the structure of parton showers and must be carefully accounted for in perturbative calculations. In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluon interactions, we present the first calculation of inclusive charm-jet and bottom-jet cross sections in electron-nucleus collisions at next-to-leading order and compare them to the reference electron-proton case. We also show predictions for the heavy flavor-tagged jet momentum sharing distributions to further clarify the correlated in-medium modification of jet substructure.

Nuclear matter effects on jet production at electron-ion colliders

In these proceedings we report recent progress on understanding hadron and jet production in electron-nucleus collisions at the future Electron-Ion Collider [1,2]. These processes will play an essential role in the exploration of the partonic structure of nuclei and the study of parton shower evolution in strongly-interacting matter. We employ the framework of soft-collinear effective theory, generalized to include in-medium interactions, to present the first theoretical results for inclusive hadron and jet cross sections, as well as the jet charge modification in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei. We further demonstrate how to separate initial-state and final-state effects.

Radiative Quark Jet Function with an External Gluon

Factorization theorems in soft-collinear effective theory at subleading order in power counting involve ``radiative jet functions'', defined in terms of matrix elements of collinear fields with a soft momentum emitted from inside the jet. Of particular importance are the radiative quark jet functions with an external photon or gluon, which arise e.g. in the factorization theorems for the Higgs-boson amplitudes $h\toγγ$, $h\to gg$ and $gg\to h$ induced by light-quark loops. While the photon case has been studied extensively in previous work, we present here a detailed study of the radiative jet function with an external gluon. We calculate this jet function at one- and two-loop order, derive its one-loop anomalous dimension and study its renormalization-group evolution.

Factorization at Subleading Power, Sudakov Resummation and Endpoint Divergences in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

Starting from the first renormalized factorization theorem for a process described at subleading power in soft-collinear effective theory, we discuss the resummation of Sudakov logarithms for such processes in renormalization-group improved perturbation theory. Endpoint divergences in convolution integrals, which arise generically beyond leading power, are regularized and removed by systematically rearranging the factorization formula. We study in detail the example of the $b$-quark induced $h\toγγ$ decay of the Higgs boson, for which we resum large logarithms of the ratio $M_h/m_b$ at next-to-leading logarithmic order. We also briefly discuss the related $gg\to h$ amplitude.

Heavy meson tomography of cold nuclear matter at the electron-ion collider

An important part of the physics program at the future electron-ion collider is to understand the nature of hadronization and the transport of energy and matter in large nuclei. Open heavy flavor production in deep inelastic scattering provides a new tool to address these critical questions. We present the first calculation of D-mesons and B-meson cross sections in electron-nucleus collisions at the EIC by including both next-to-leading order QCD corrections and cold nuclear matter effects. Our formalism employs generalized DGLAP evolution to include the contribution of in-medium parton showers, and is based on methods developed in soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons that describe inclusive hadron production in reactions with nucleons and nuclei. The comprehensive study summarized here allows us to identify the optimal observables, center-of-mass energies, and kinematic regions most sensitive to the physics of energy loss and hadronization at the EIC.

Three-loop soft function for energetic electroweak boson production at hadron colliders

We calculate the three-loop soft function for the production of an electroweak boson (Higgs, $γ$, $W^\pm$, $Z$) with large transverse momentum at a hadron collider. It is the first time a soft function for a three-parton process is computed at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO). As a technical novelty, we perform the calculation in terms of forward-scattering-type loop diagrams rather than evaluating phase space integrals. Our three-loop result contains color-tripole contributions and explicitly confirms predictions on the universal infrared structure of QCD scattering amplitudes with three massless parton legs. The soft function is a central ingredient in the factorized cross section for electroweak boson production near the kinematic endpoint (threshold), where the invariant mass of the recoiling hadronic radiation is small compared to its transverse momentum. Our result is required for predictions of the near-threshold cross sections at N$^3$LO and for the resummation of threshold logarithms at primed next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL$^\prime$) accuracy.

Factorization at Subleading Power and Endpoint Divergences in $h\toγγ$ Decay: II. Renormalization and Scale Evolution

Building on the recent derivation of a bare factorization theorem for the $b$-quark induced contribution to the $h\toγγ$ decay amplitude based on soft-collinear effective theory, we derive the first renormalized factorization theorem for a process described at subleading power in scale ratios, where $λ=m_b/M_h\ll 1$ in our case. We prove two refactorization conditions for a matching coefficient and an operator matrix element in the endpoint region, where they exhibit singularities giving rise to divergent convolution integrals. The refactorization conditions ensure that the dependence of the decay amplitude on the rapidity regulator, which regularizes the endpoint singularities, cancels out to all orders of perturbation theory. We establish the renormalized form of the factorization formula, proving that extra contributions arising from the fact that "endpoint regularization" does not commute with renormalization can be absorbed, to all orders, by a redefinition of one of the matching coefficients. We derive the renormalization-group evolution equation satisfied by all quantities in the factorization formula and use them to predict the large logarithms of order $α{\hspace{0.3mm}}α_s^2{\hspace{0.3mm}} L^k$ in the three-loop decay amplitude, where $L=\ln(-M_h^2/m_b^2)$ and $k=6,5,4,3$. We find perfect agreement with existing numerical results for the amplitude and analytical results for the three-loop contributions involving a massless quark loop. On the other hand, we disagree with the results of previous attempts to predict the series of subleading logarithms $\simα{\hspace{0.3mm}}α_s^n{\hspace{0.3mm}} L^{2n+1}$.

Two-Loop Radiative Jet Function for Exclusive $B$-Meson and Higgs Decays

The rare radiative $B$-meson decay $B^-\toγ\ell^-\barν$ and the radiative Higgs-boson decay $h\toγγ$ mediated by light-quark loops both receive large logarithmic corrections in QCD, which can be resummed using factorization theorems derived in soft-collinear effective theory. In these factorization theorems the same radiative jet function appears, which is a central object in the study of factorization beyond the leading order in scale ratios. We calculate this function at two-loop order both in momentum space and in a dual space, where its renormalization-group evolution takes on a simpler form. We also derive the two-loop anomalous dimension of the jet function and present the exact solution to its evolution equation at two-loop order. Another important outcome of our analysis is the explicit form of the two-loop anomalous dimension of the $B$-meson light-cone distribution amplitude in momentum space.

Renormalization and Scale Evolution of the Soft-Quark Soft Function

Soft functions defined in terms of matrix elements of soft fields dressed by Wilson lines are central components of factorization theorems for cross sections and decay rates in collider and heavy-quark physics. While in many cases the relevant soft functions are defined in terms of gluon operators, at subleading order in power counting soft functions containing quark fields appear. We present a detailed discussion of the properties of the soft-quark soft function consisting of a quark propagator dressed by two finite-length Wilson lines connecting at one point. This function enters in the factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson decay amplitude of the $h\toγγ$ process mediated by light-quark loops. We perform the renormalization of this soft function at one-loop order, derive its two-loop anomalous dimension and discuss solutions to its renormalization-group evolution equation in momentum space, in Laplace space and in the "diagonal space", where the evolution is strictly multiplicative.

Factorization at Subleading Power and Endpoint-Divergent Convolutions in $h\toγγ$ Decay

It is by now well known that, at subleading power in scale ratios, factorization theorems for high-energy cross sections and decay amplitudes contain endpoint-divergent convolution integrals. The presence of these divergences hints at a violation of simple scale separation, as a result of the so-called collinear anomaly. At the technical level, endpoint divergences indicate an unexpected failure of dimensional regularization and the $\bar{\rm MS}$ subtraction scheme. In this paper we start a comprehensive discussion of factorization at subleading power within the framework of soft-collinear effective theory. As a concrete example, we factorize the decay amplitude for the radiative Higgs-boson decay $h\to γγ$ mediated by a $b$-quark loop, for which endpoint-divergent convolution integrals require both dimensional and rapidity regulators. We derive a factorization theorem for the decay amplitude in terms of bare Wilson coefficients and operator matrix elements. We show that endpoint divergences caused by rapidity divergences cancel to all orders in perturbation theory, while endpoint divergences that are regularized dimensionally can be removed by rearranging the terms in the factorization theorem. We use our result to resum the leading double-logarithmic corrections of order $α_s^n\ln^{2n+2}(-M_h^2/m_b^2)$ to all orders of perturbation theory.

Three-loop soft function for heavy-to-light quark decays

We compute the 1-jettiness soft function for the decay of a heavy quark into a light quark jet plus colorless particles at three-loop order in soft-collinear effective theory. The 1-jettiness measurement fixes the total small light-cone momentum component of the soft radiation with respect to the jet direction. This soft function is a universal ingredient to the factorization of heavy-to-light quark decays in the limit of small 1-jettiness. Our three-loop result is required for resummation at the N$^3$LL$^\prime$ level, e.g. near the endpoint in the photon energy spectrum of the $B \to X_s γ$ decay. It is also a necessary ingredient for future calculations of fully-differential heavy-to-light quark decay rates at N$^3$LO using the $N$-jettiness subtraction method, e.g. for semileptonic top decays. Using our result for the soft anomalous dimension we confirm predictions on the universal infrared structure of QCD scattering amplitudes with a massive external quark at three loops.

The Three-loop Quark Jet Function

We calculate the massless quark jet function to three-loop order. The quark jet function is a universal ingredient in SCET factorization for many collider and decay processes with quark initiated final state jets. Our three-loop result contributes to the resummation for observables probing the invariant mass of final state quark jets at N$^3$LL$^\prime$. It represents the first complete three-loop result for a factorization ingredient describing collinear radiation. Furthermore it constitutes a major component of the $N$-jettiness subtraction/slicing method at N$^3$LO, which eventually may enable the calculation of fully-differential cross sections with a colorful final state at this order.

s-channel Single Top Quark Production and Decay at NNLO in QCD

We report on a fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculation of s-channel single top (anti-)quark production with a semi-leptonic decay at the LHC, neglecting the color correlation between the light and heavy quark lines and in the narrow width approximation. The NNLO corrections can increase the cross section by about 10% in the low transverse momentum region of the top quark and reduce scale variation uncertainty. In order to compare with experimental results without unfolding procedures, we also present theoretical predictions with fiducial cuts, including total cross sections and distributions of observables used in the experimental multivariate analysis. The NNLO corrections are found to be about -8% for fiducial cross sections.
