The density conjecture for Juddian points for the quantum Rabi model

We study doubly degenerate (Juddian) eigenvalues for the Quantum Rabi Hamiltonian, a simple model of the interaction between a two-level atom and a single quantized mode of light. We prove a strong form of the density conjecture of Kimoto, Reyes-Bustos, and Wakayama, showing that any fixed value of the splitting between the two atomic levels, there is a dense set of coupling strengths for which the corresponding Rabi Hamiltonian admits Juddian eigenvalues. We also construct infinitely many sets of parameters for which the Rabi Hamiltonian admits two distinct Juddian eigenvalues. The fine structure of the zeros of classical Laguerre polynomials plays a key role in our methods.

The Quantum Rabi model: Towards Braak's conjecture

We establish a density one version of Braak's conjecture on the fine structure of the spectrum of the quantum Rabi model, as well as a recent conjecture of Braak, Nguyen, Reyes-Bustos and Wakayama on the nearest neighbor spacings of the spectrum. The proof uses a three-term asymptotic expansion for large eigenvalues due to Boutet de Monvel and Zielinski, and a number theoretic argument from uniform distribution theory.

Zeros of modular forms and Faber polynomials

We study the zeros of cusp forms of large weight for the modular group, which have a very large order of vanishing at infinity, so that they have a fixed number D of finite zeros in the fundamental domain. We show that for large weight the zeros of these forms cluster near D vertical lines, with the zeros of a weight k form lying at height approximately log(k). This is in contrast to previously known cases, such as Eisenstein series, where the zeros lie on the circular part of the boundary of the fundamental domain, or the case of cuspidal Hecke eigenforms where the zeros are uniformly distributed in the fundamental domain. Our method uses the Faber polynomials. We show that for our class of cusp forms, the associated Faber polynomials, suitably renormalized, converge to the truncated exponential polynomial of degree D.

GOE statistics on the moduli space of surfaces of large genus

For a compact hyperbolic surface, we define a smooth linear statistic, mimicking the number of Laplace eigenvalues in a short energy window. We study the variance of this statistic, when averaged over the moduli space $\mathcal M_g$ of all genus $g$ surfaces with respect to the Weil-Petersson measure. We show that in the double limit, first taking the large genus limit and then the high energy limit, we recover GOE statistics. The proof makes essential use of Mirzakhani's integration formula.

Almost sure GOE fluctuations of energy levels for hyperbolic surfaces of high genus

We study the variance of a linear statistic of the Laplace eigenvalues on a hyperbolic surface, when the surface varies over the moduli space of all surfaces of fixed genus, sampled at random according to the Weil-Petersson measure. The ensemble variance of the linear statistic was recently shown to coincide with that of the corresponding statistic in the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) of random matrix theory, in the double limit of first taking large genus and then shrinking size of the energy window. In this note we show that in this same limit, the energy variance for a typical surface is close to the GOE result, a feature called "ergodicity" in the random matrix theory literature.

On the Central Limit Theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics on random surfaces of large genus

We study the fluctuations of smooth linear statistics of Laplace eigenvalues of compact hyperbolic surfaces lying in short energy windows, when averaged over the moduli space of surfaces of a given genus. The average is taken with respect to the Weil-Petersson measure. We show that first taking the large genus limit, then a short window limit, the distribution tends to a Gaussian. The variance was recently shown to be given by the corresponding quantity for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE), and the Gaussian fluctuations are also consistent with those in Random Matrix Theory, as conjectured in the physics literature for a fixed surface.

On the Robin spectrum for the equilateral triangle

The equilateral triangle is one of the few planar domains where the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalue problems were explicitly determined, by Lamé in 1833, despite not admitting separation of variables. In this paper, we study the Robin spectrum of the equilateral triangle, which was determined by McCartin in 2004 in terms of a system of transcendental coupled secular equations. We give uniform upper bounds for the Robin-Neumann gaps, showing that they are bounded by their limiting mean value, which is hence an almost sure bound. The spectrum admits a systematic double multiplicity, and after removing it we study the gaps in the resulting desymmetrized spectrum. We show a spectral gap property, that there are arbitrarily large gaps, and also arbitrarily small ones, moreover that the nearest neighbour spacing distribution of the desymmetrized spectrum is a delta function at the origin. We show that for sufficiently small Robin parameter, the desymmetrized spectrum is simple.

The Robin problem on rectangles

We study the statistics and the arithmetic properties of the Robin spectrum of a rectangle. A number of results are obtained for the multiplicities in the spectrum, depending on the Diophantine nature of the aspect ratio. In particular, it is shown that for the square, unlike the case of Neumann eigenvalues where there are unbounded multiplicities of arithmetic origin, there are no multiplicities in the Robin spectrum for sufficiently small (but nonzero) Robin parameter except a systematic symmetry. In addition, uniform lower and upper bounds are established for the Robin-Neumann gaps in terms of their limiting mean spacing. Finally, that the pair correlation function of the Robin spectrum on a Diophantine rectangle is shown to be Poissonian.

On the Robin spectrum for the hemisphere

We study the spectrum of the Laplacian on the hemisphere with Robin boundary conditions. It is found that the eigenvalues fall into small clusters around the Neumann spectrum, and satisfy a Szegő type limit theorem. Sharp upper and lower bounds for the gaps between the Robin and Neumann eigenvalues are derived, showing in particular that these are unbounded. Further, it is shown that except for a systematic double multiplicity, there are no multiplicities in the spectrum as soon as the Robin parameter is positive, unlike the Neumann case which is highly degenerate. Finally, the limiting spacing distribution of the desymmetrized spectrum is proved to be the delta function at the origin.

Modelling the expected probability of correct assignment under uncertainty

When making important decisions such as choosing health insurance or a school, people are often uncertain what levels of attributes will suit their true preference. After choice, they might realize that their uncertainty resulted in a mismatch: choosing a sub-optimal alternative, while another available alternative better matches their needs. We study here the overall impact, from a central planner's perspective, of decisions under such uncertainty. We use the representation of Voronoi tessellations to locate all individuals and alternatives in an attribute space. We provide an expression for the probability of correct match, and calculate, analytically and numerically, the average percentage of matches. We test dependence on the level of uncertainty and location. We find overall considerable mismatch even for low uncertainty - a possible concern for policy makers. We further explore a commonly used practice - allocating service representatives to assist individuals' decisions. We show that within a given budget and uncertainty level, the effective allocation is for individuals who are close to the boundary between several Voronoi cells, but are not right on the boundary.

The metric theory of the pair correlation function of real-valued lacunary sequences

Let $\{ a(x) \}_{x=1}^{\infty}$ be a positive, real-valued, lacunary sequence. This note shows that the pair correlation function of the fractional parts of the dilations $αa(x)$ is Poissonian for Lebesgue almost every $α\in \mathbb{R}$. By using harmonic analysis, our result - irrespective of the choice of the real-valued sequence $\{ a(x) \}_{x=1}^{\infty}$ - can essentially be reduced to showing that the number of solutions to the Diophantine inequality $$ \vert n_1 (a(x_1)-a(y_1))- n_2(a(x_2)-a(y_2)) \vert < 1 $$ in integer six-tuples $(n_1,n_2,x_1,x_2,y_1,y_2)$ located in the box $[-N,N]^6$ with the ``excluded diagonals'', that is $$x_1\neq y_1, \quad x_2 \neq y_2, \quad (n_1,n_2)\neq (0,0),$$ is at most $N^{4-δ}$ for some fixed $δ>0$, for all sufficiently large $N$.

On Cilleruelo's conjecture for the least common multiple of polynomial sequences

A conjecture due to Cilleruelo states that for an irreducible polynomial $f$ with integer coefficients of degree $d\geq 2$, the least common multiple $L_f(N)$ of the sequence $f(1), f(2), \dots, f(N)$ has asymptotic growth $\log L_f(N)\sim (d-1)N\log N$ as $N\to \infty$. We establish a version of this conjecture for almost all shifts of a fixed polynomial, the range of $N$ depending on the range of shifts.

Prime lattice points in ovals

We study the distribution of lattice points with prime coordinates lying in the dilate of a convex planar domain having smooth boundary, with nowhere vanishing curvature. Counting lattice points weighted by a von Mangoldt function gives an asymptotic formula, with the main term being the area of the dilated domain, and our goal is to study the remainder term. Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis, we give a sharp upper bound, and further assuming that the positive imaginary parts of the zeros of the Riemann zeta functions are linearly independent over the rationals allows us to give a formula for the value distribution function of the properly normalized remainder term.

Angles of Gaussian primes

Fermat showed that every prime p = 1 mod 4 is a sum of two squares: $p = a^2 + b^2$. To any of the 8 possible representations (a,b) we associate an angle whose tangent is the ratio b/a. In 1919 Hecke showed that these angles are uniformly distributed as p varies, and in the 1950's Kubilius proved uniform distribution in somewhat short arcs. We study fine scale statistics of these angles, in particular the variance of the number of such angles in a short arc. We present a conjecture for this variance, motivated both by a random matrix model, and by a function field analogue of this problem, for which we prove an asymptotic form for the corresponding variance.

A metric theory of minimal gaps

We study the minimal gap statistic for fractional parts of sequences of the form $\mathcal A^α= \{αa(n)\}$ where $\mathcal A = \{a(n)\}$ is a sequence of distinct of integers. Assuming that the additive energy of the sequence is close to its minimal possible value, we show that for almost all $α$, the minimal gap $δ_{\min}^α(N)=\min\{αa(m)-αa(n)\bmod 1: 1\leq m\neq n\leq N\}$ is close to that of a random sequence.

Spatial statistics for lattice points on the sphere I: Individual results

We study the spatial distribution of point sets on the sphere obtained from the representation of a large integer as a sum of three integer squares. We examine several statistics of these point sets, such as the electrostatic potential, Ripley's function, the variance of the number of points in random spherical caps, and the covering radius. Some of the results are conditional on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis.
