Low-lying zeros of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions, hyper-elliptic curves and Random Matrix Theory

The statistics of low-lying zeros of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions were conjectured by Katz and Sarnak to be given by the scaling limit of eigenvalues from the unitary symplectic ensemble. The n-level densities were found to be in agreement with this in a certain neighborhood of the origin in the Fourier domain by Rubinstein in his Ph.D. thesis in 1998. An attempt to extend the neighborhood was made in the Ph.D. thesis of Peng Gao (2005), who under GRH gave the density as a complicated combinatorial factor, but it remained open whether it coincides with the Random Matrix Theory factor. For n at most 7 this was recently confirmed by Levinson and Miller. We resolve this problem for all n, not by directly doing the combinatorics, but by passing to a function field analogue, of L-functions associated to hyper-elliptic curves of given genus g over a field of q elements. We show that the answer in this case coincides with Gao's combinatorial factor up to a controlled error. We then take the limit of large finite field size q to infinity and use the Katz-Sarnak equidistribution theorem, which identifies the monodromy of the Frobenius conjugacy classes for the hyperelliptic ensemble with the group USp(2g). Further taking the limit of large genus g to infinity allows us to identify Gao's combinatorial factor with the RMT answer.

On the eigenvalue spacing distribution for a point scatterer on the flat torus

We study the level spacing distribution for the spectrum of a point scatterer on a flat torus. In the 2-dimensional case, we show that in the weak coupling regime the eigenvalue spacing distribution coincides with that of the spectrum of the Laplacian (ignoring multiplicties), by showing that the perturbed eigenvalues generically clump with the unperturbed ones on the scale of the mean level spacing. We also study the three dimensional case, where the situation is very different.

Statistics of wave functions for a point scatterer on the torus

Quantum systems whose classical counterpart have ergodic dynamics are quantum ergodic in the sense that almost all eigenstates are uniformly distributed in phase space. In contrast, when the classical dynamics is integrable, there is concentration of eigenfunctions on invariant structures in phase space. In this paper we study eigenfunction statistics for the Laplacian perturbed by a delta-potential (also known as a point scatterer) on a flat torus, a popular model used to study the transition between integrability and chaos in quantum mechanics. The eigenfunctions of this operator consist of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian which vanish at the scatterer, and new, or perturbed, eigenfunctions. We show that almost all of the perturbed eigenfunctions are uniformly distributed in configuration space.

Restriction of toral eigenfunctions to hypersurfaces and nodal sets

We give uniform upper and lower bounds for the L^2 norm of the restriction of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the three-dimensional standard flat torus to surfaces with non-vanishing curvature. We also present several related results concerning the nodal sets of eigenfunctions.

On the Geometry of the Nodal Lines of Eigenfunctions of the Two-Dimensional Torus

The width of a convex curve in the plane is the minimal distance between a pair of parallel supporting lines of the curve. In this paper we study the width of nodal lines of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the standard flat torus. We prove a variety of results on the width, some having stronger versions assuming a conjecture of Cilleruelo and Granville asserting a uniform bound for the number of lattice points on the circle lying in short arcs.

On the nodal sets of toral eigenfunctions

We study the nodal sets of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the standard d-dimensional flat torus. The question we address is: Can a fixed hypersurface lie on the nodal sets of eigenfunctions with arbitrarily large eigenvalue? In dimension two, we show that this happens only for segments of closed geodesics. In higher dimensions, certain cylindrical sets do lie on nodal sets corresponding to arbitrarily large eigenvalues. Our main result is that this cannot happen for hypersurfaces with nonzero Gauss-Kronecker curvature. In dimension two, the result follows from a uniform lower bound for the L^2-norm of the restriction of eigenfunctions to the curve, proved in an earlier paper. In high dimensions we currently do not have this bound. Instead, we make use of the real-analytic nature of the flat torus to study variations on this bound for restrictions of eigenfunctions to suitable submanifolds in the complex domain. In all of our results, we need an arithmetic ingredient concerning the cluster structure of lattice points on the sphere. We also present an independent proof for the two-dimensional case relying on the "abc-theorem" in function fields.

Restriction of toral eigenfunctions to hypersurfaces

We establish uniform upper and lower bounds on the restrictions of the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the 2- and 3-dimensional standard flat torus to smooth hyper-surfaces with non-vanishing curvature.

Traces of high powers of the Frobenius class in the hyperelliptic ensemble

The zeta function of a curve over a finite field may be expressed in terms of the characteristic polynomial of a unitary symplectic matrix, called the Frobenius class of the curve. We compute the expected value of the trace of the n-th power of the Frobenius class for an ensemble of hyperelliptic curves of genus g over a fixed finite field in the limit of large genus, and compare the results to the corresponding averages over the unitary symplectic group USp(2g). We are able to compute the averages for powers n almost up to 4g, finding agreement with the Random Matrix results except for small n and for n=2g. As an application we compute the one-level density of zeros of the zeta function of the curves, including lower-order terms, for test functions whose Fourier transform is supported in (-2,2). The results confirm in part a conjecture of Katz and Sarnak, that to leading order the low-lying zeros for this ensemble have symplectic statistics.

The variance of arithmetic measures associated to closed geodesics on the modular surface

We determine the variance for the fluctuations of the arithmetic measures obtained by collecting all closed geodesics on the modular surface with the same discriminant and ordering them by the latter. This arithmetic variance differs by subtle factors from the variance that one gets when considering individual closed geodesics when ordered by their length. The arithmetic variance is the same one that appears in the fluctuations of measures associated with quantum states on the modular surface.

Statistics of the zeros of zeta functions in families of hyperelliptic curves over a finite field

We study the fluctuations in the distribution of zeros of zeta functions of a family of hyperelliptic curves defined over a fixed finite field, in the limit of large genus. According to the Riemann Hypothesis for curves, the zeros all lie on a circle. Their angles are uniformly distributed, so for a curve of genus g a fixed interval I will contain 2g|I| angles as the genus grows. We show that for the variance of number of angles in I is asymptotically a constant multiple of log(2g|I|) and prove a central limit theorem: The normalized fluctuations are Gaussian. These results continue to hold for shrinking intervals as long as the expected number of angles 2g|I| tends to infinity.

On the statistics of the minimal solution of a linear Diophantine equation and uniform distribution of the real part of orbits in hyperbolic spaces

We study a variant of a problem considered by Dinaburg and Sinai on the statistics of the minimal solution to a linear Diophantine equation. We show that the signed ratio between the Euclidean norms of the minimal solution and the coefficient vector is uniformly distributed modulo one. We reduce the problem to an equidistribution theorem of Anton Good concerning the orbits of a point in the upper half-plane under the action of a Fuchsian group.

On the volume of nodal sets for eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the torus

We study the volume of nodal sets for eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the standard torus in two or more dimensions. We consider a sequence of eigenvalues $4π^2\eigenvalue$ with growing multiplicity $\Ndim\to\infty$, and compute the expectation and variance of the volume of the nodal set with respect to a Gaussian probability measure on the eigenspaces. We show that the expected volume of the nodal set is $const \sqrt{\eigenvalue}$. Our main result is that the variance of the volume normalized by $\sqrt{\eigenvalue}$ is bounded by $O(1/\sqrt{\Ndim})$, so that the normalized volume has vanishing fluctuations as we increase the dimension of the eigenspace.

The Leray measure of nodal sets for random eigenfunctions on the torus

We study nodal sets for typical eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the standard torus in 2 or more dimensions. Making use of the multiplicities in the spectrum of the Laplacian, we put a Gaussian measure on the eigenspaces and use it to average over the eigenspace. We consider a sequence of eigenvalues with multiplicity N tending to infinity. The quantity that we study is the Leray, or microcanonical, measure of the nodal set. We show that the expected value of the Leray measure of an eigenfunction is constant. Our main result is that the variance of Leray measure is asymptotically 1/(4 pi N), as N tends to infinity, at least in dimensions 2 and at least 5.

On the asymptotic distribution of zeros of modular forms

We study the distribution of zeros of holomorphic modular forms. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis we show that the zeros of Hecke eigenforms for the modular group become equidistributed with respect to the hyperbolic measure on the modular domain as the weight grows.

A lower bound for periods of matrices

For a nonsingular integer matrix A, we study the growth of the order of A modulo N. We say that a matrix is exceptional if it is diagonalizable, and a power of the matrix has all eigenvalues equal to powers of a single rational integer, or all eigenvalues are powers of a single unit in a real quadratic field. For exceptional matrices, it is easily seen that there are arbitrarily large values of N for which the order of A modulo N is logarithmically small. In contrast, we show that if the matrix is not exceptional, then the order of A modulo N goes to infinity faster than any constant multiple of log N.
