Helically Enhanced Chiroptical Response and Symmetry Breaking in Conjugated Polymers

Chiral $π$-conjugated polymers are an attractive material platform for spin polarized carrier-transport and spectroscopy, but fundamental considerations for how torsional disorder influences the response properties of the material have not been considered. Here we combine atomistic electronic structure modeling with with experimental spectroscopic measurements to examine symmetry breaking in the prototypical $π$-conjugated polymer polyacetylene, (CH)$_x$. Chiral (CH)$_x$ oligomers are generated in distinct conformations which differ in their out-of-plane tonsorial ordering. We find that a \textit{helical }conformation introduces orders of magnitude enhanced chiroptical activity due to a solenoid effect. This effect is visualized by the Transition Chiral Tensor analysis which shows signatures of domain ordering which eliminates destructive interference between electric and magnetic contributions. These findings highlight the capability to develop a hierarchical interpretation relating local, fragment symmetry breaking to global, nonlocal interactions governing chiroptical response in emerging chiral materials.

Circular dichroism in non-chiral metal halide perovskites

We demonstrate theoretically that non-chiral perovskite layers can exhibit circular dichroism (CD) in the absence of a magnetic field and without chiral activation by chiral molecules. The effect is shown to be due to splitting of helical excitonic states which can form in structures of orthorhombic or lower symmetry that exhibit Rashba spin effects. The selective coupling of these helical exciton states to helical light is shown to give rise to circular dichroism. Polarization dependent absorption is shown to occur due to the combined effect of Rashba splitting, in-plane symmetry breaking, and the effect of the exciton momentum on its fine structure, which takes the form of Zeeman splitting in an effective magnetic field. We calculate significant CD with an anisotropy factor of up to 30% in orthorhombic perovskite layers under off-normal top illumination conditions, raising the possibility of its observation in non-chiral perovskite structures.

Driving field amplitude gauged quantitative inverse spin Hall effect detection

Spin transport in thin-film materials can be studied by ferromagnetic resonantly (FMR) driven spin pumping of a charge-free spin current which induces an electromotive force through the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). For quantitative ISHE experiments, precise control of the FMR driving field amplitude $B_1$ is crucial. This study exploits in situ monitoring of $B_1$ by utilization of electron paramagnetic resonantly (EPR) induced transient nutation of paramagnetic molecules (a 1:1 complex of α,γ-bisdiphenylene-β-phenylallyl and benzene, BDPA) placed as $B_1$ probe in proximity of a NiFe/Pt-based ISHE device. Concurrent to an ISHE experiment, $B_1$ is obtained from the inductively measured BDPA Rabi-nutation frequency. Higher reproducibility is achieved by renormalization of the ISHE voltage to $B_1^2$ with an accuracy that is determined by the homogeneity of the FMR driving field and thus by the applied microwave resonator and ISHE device setup.

Theory of Primary Photoexcitations in Donor-Acceptor Copolymers

We present a generic theory of primary photoexcitations in low band gap donor-acceptor conjugated copolymers. Because of the combined effects of strong electron correlations and broken symmetry, there is considerable mixing between a charge-transfer exciton and an energetically proximate triplet-triplet state with an overall spin singlet. The triplet-triplet state, optically forbidden in homopolymers, is allowed in donor-acceptor copolymers. For an intermediate difference in electron affinities of the donor and the acceptor, the triplet-triplet state can have stronger oscillator strength than the charge-transfer exciton. We discuss the possibility of intramolecular singlet fission from the triplet-triplet state, and how such fission can be detected experimentally.
