Rydberg states generation of Hydrogen atoms with intense laser pulses: the roles of Coulomb force and initial lateral momentum

We investigate the Rydberg states generation of Hydrogen atoms with intense laser pulses, by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and by means of classical trajectory monte-carlo simulations. Both linearly polarized multi-cycle pulses and pairs of optical half cycle pulses are used. Comparisons between these methods show that both the Coulomb force and initial lateral momentum, which have effects on the $n$-distribution and $l$-distribution of the population of excited states, are important in the generation of Rydberg states.

Dynamic orbitals in high-harmonic generation from CO molecules

We identify that both the dynamic core polarization and dynamic orbital deformation are important in the orientation-dependent high-harmonic generation of CO molecules subjected to intense few cycle laser fields. These polarization dynamics allow for the observation of strong orientation effects and dynamic minimum in the harmonic spectra. The generated attosecond pulses can be greatly affected by these multielectron effects. This work sheds light on future development of dynamic orbital imaging on attosecond time scale.

Dynamical core polarization of two-active-electron systems in strong laser fields

The ionization of two-active-electron systems by intense laser fields is investigated theoretically. In comparison with time-dependent Hartree-Fock and exact two electron simulation, we show that the ionization rate is overestimated in SAE approximation. A modified single-active-electron model is formulated by taking into account of the dynamical core polarization. Applying the new approach to Ca atoms, it is found that the polarization of the core can be considered instantaneous and the large polarizability of the cation suppresses the ionization by 50% while the photoelectron cut-off energy increases slightly. The existed tunneling ionization formulation can be corrected analytically by considering core polarization.

Alignment-dependent fluorescence emission induced by tunnel ionization of carbon dioxide from lower-lying orbitals

Study on ionization process of molecules in an intense infrared laser field is of paramount interest in strong-field physics and constitutes the foundation of imaging of molecular valence orbitals and attosecond science. We show measurement of alignment-dependent ionization probabilities of the lower-lying orbitals of the molecules by experimentally detecting alignment-dependence of fluorescence emission from tunnel ionized carbon dioxide molecules. The experimental measurements are compared with the theoretical calculations of strong field approximation (SFA) and molecular ADK models. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of an all-optical approach for probing the ionization dynamics of lower-lying orbitals of molecules, which is still difficult to achieve until now by other techniques. Moreover, the deviation between the experimental and theoretical results indicates the incompleteness of current theoretical models for describing strong field ionization of molecules.

Dynamic core polarization in strong-field ionization of CO molecules

The orientation-dependent strong-field ionization of CO molecules is investigated using the fully propagated three-dimensional time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory. The full ionization results are in good agreement with recent experiments. The comparisons between the full method and single active orbital (SAO) method show that although the core electrons are generally more tightly bounded and contribute little to the total ionization yields, their dynamics cannot be ignored, which effectively modify the behaviors of electrons in the highest occupied molecular orbital. By incorporating it into the SAO method, we identify that the dynamic core polarization plays an important role in the strong-field tunneling ionization of CO molecules, which is helpful for future development of tunneling ionization theory of molecules beyond single active electron approximation.

Revealing the Complex Transport Behaviors in Warm Dense Hydrogen by Including Nuclear Quantum Effects

Nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) on the structures and transport properties of dense liquid hydrogen at densities of 10-100 g/cm3 and temperatures of 0.1-1 eV are fully assessed using \textit{ab initio} path-integral molecular dynamics simulations. With the inclusion of NQEs, ionic diffusions are strongly enhanced by the magnitude from 100% to 15% with increasing temperature, while electrical conductivities are significantly suppressed. The analyses of ionic structures and zero-point energy show also the importance of NQEs in these regime. The significant quantum delocalization of ions introduces expressively different scattering cross section between protons compared with classical particle treatments, which can explain the large alterability of transport behaviors. Furthermore, the energy, pressure, and isotope effects are also greatly influenced by NQEs. The complex behaviors show that NQEs can not be neglected for dense hydrogen even in the warm dense regime.

Ticking terahertz wave generation in attoseconds

We perform a joint measurement of terahertz waves and high-order harmonics generated from noble atoms driven by a fundamental laser pulse and its second harmonic. By correlating their dependence on the phase-delay of the two pulses, we determine the generation of THz waves in tens of attoseconds precision. Compared with simulations and models, we find that the laser-assisted soft-collision of the electron wave packet with the atomic core plays a key role. It is demonstrated that the rescattering process, being indispensable in HHG processes, dominant THz wave generation as well but in a more elaborate way. The new finding might be helpful for the full characterization of the rescattering dynamics.

Dynamical Ionic Clusters with Flowing Electron Bubbles from Warm to Hot Dense Iron along the Hugoniot Curve

The complex structures of warm and hot dense matter are essential to understand the behaviors of materials in high energy density physics processes and provide new features of matter constitutions. Here, along a new unified first-principle determined Hugoniot curve of iron from normal condensed condition up to 1 Gbar, the novel structures characterized by the ionic clusters and separated "electron bubbles" are revolutionarily unraveled using newly developed quantum Langevin molecular dynamics (QLMD). Subsistence of complex clusters, with bonds formed by inner shell electrons of neighbor ions, can persist in the time length of 50 femto-seconds dynamically with quantum flowing bubbles, which are produced by the interplay of Fermi electron degeneracy, the ionic coupling and the dynamical nature. With the inclusion of those complicated features in QLMD, the present data could serve as a first-principle benchmark in a wide range of temperatures and densities.
