Optimal-Observable Analysis of Possible New Physics Using the b-quark in gamma gamma -> tt -> bX

We study possible anomalous top-quark couplings generated by SU(2) x U(1) gauge invariant dimension-6 effective operators, using the final b-quark momentum distribution in gamma gamma -> tt -> bX. Taking into account non-standard tt gamma, tbW and gamma gamma H couplings, we perform an optimal-observable analysis in order to estimate the precision for the determination of all relevant non-standard couplings.

Probing Anomalous Top-Quark Couplings Induced by Dim.6 Operators at Photon Colliders

Possible anomalous top-quark couplings induced by SU(2) x U(1) gauge-invariant dimension-6 effective operators were studied in the process of t t-bar productions and decays at polarized gamma gamma colliders. Two CP-violating asymmetries, a linear-polarization asymmetry and a circular-polarization asymmetry, were computed including both non-standard [t t-bar gamma] and [gamma gamma H] couplings. An optimal-observable analysis for the process gamma gamma --> t t-bar --> l^{+-} ... was performed in order to estimate the precision for determination of all relevant non-standard couplings, including the anomalous tbW coupling.

How Well Can We Reconstruct the ttbar System Near its Threshold at Future e+e- Linear Colliders?

We developed a new method for full kinematical reconstruction of the ttbar system near its threshold at future linear e+e- colliders. In the core of the method lies likelihood fitting which is designed to improve measurement accuracies of the kinematical variables that specify the final states resulting from ttbar decays. The improvement is demonstrated by applying this method to a Monte-Carlo ttbar sample generated with various experimental effects including beamstrahlung, finite acceptance and resolution of the detector system, etc. In most cases the fit brings a broad non-Gaussian distribution of a given kinematical variable to a nearly Gaussian shape, thereby justifying phenomenological analyses based on simple Gaussian smearing of parton-level momenta. The standard deviations of the resultant distributions of various kinematical variables are given in order to facilitate such phenomenological analyses. A possible application of the kinematical fitting method and its expected impact are also discussed.

Decoupling of Anomalous Top-Quark-Decay Vertices in Angular Distribution of Secondary Particles

Angular distribution of a secondary particle from top-quark decays is studied in a simple and general manner, paying careful attention to how relevant the top-quark production mechanism is. The conditions that lead to the distribution free from any possible anomalous top-quark decay interactions are specified. It is discussed how important the approximations adopted in earlier papers are.

A New Decoupling Theorem in Top-Quark Physics

Angular distribution of a secondary particle in top-quark production/decay is studied in a simple and general manner. It is shown that the distribution does not depend on any possible anomalous top-quark-decay interactions whatever the production mechanism is when certain well-justified conditions are satisfied. Some analyses using the final- state lepton are presented as an example of its application.

Angular Distribution of Leptons in General ttbar Production and Decay

Angular distribution of the secondary lepton in top-quark production followed by subsequent semi-leptonic decay is studied assuming general top-quark couplings. It is shown that the distribution does not depend on any possible anomalous tbW couplings and is determined only by the standard V-A decay vertex for any production mechanism if certain well-justified conditions are satisfied.

Probing Anomalous Top-Couplings through the Final Lepton Angular and Energy Distributions at Polarized NLC

The angular and energy distributions of the final lepton in e ebar t tbar --> l^{+-} X at next linear colliders (NLC) are analyzed a model-independent way for arbitrary longitudinal beam polarizations as sensitive tests of possible anomalous top-quark couplings. The angular-energy distribution is expressed as a combination of independent functions of the angle and the energy, where each anomalous parameter is the coefficient of an individual term. Every parameter could be thereby determined simultaneously via the optimal-observable procedure. On the other hand, anomalous tbW couplings totally decouple from the angular distribution, which enables us to study t-tbar-gamma/Z couplings exclusively.

New Hints for Testing Anomalous Top-Quark Interactions at Future Linear Colliders

Angular and energy distributions for leptons and bottom quarks in the process e^+e^- --> t t-bar --> l^{+-}/b(b-bar) ... have been calculated assuming the most general top-quark couplings. The double distributions depend both on modification of the t t-bar production and t(t-bar) --> b(b-bar) W decay vertices. However, the leptonic angular distribution turned out to be totally insensitive to non-standard parts of Wtb vertex. Distributions of decay products for polarized top quark in its rest frame have been also calculated. It has been found that the factorization of energy and angular dependence for the double leptonic distribution noticed earlier for the Standard Model survives even if one allows for deviations from the V-A interactions, and the SM angular leptonic distribution turned out to be preserved by anomalous decay vertex.

Probing Anomalous Top-Couplings at Polarized Linear Collider

The energy spectra of the lepton(s) in eebar --> ttbar --> l^{+-}X/ l^+l^- X' at next linear colliders (NLC) are analyzed a model-independent way for arbitrary longitudinal beam polarizations as a general test of possible anomalous top-quark couplings.

Remark on CP-violating Polarization Asymmetry of tt-bar via Anomalous Couplings to gamma and Z

We calculate the CP-violating polarization asymmetry of tt-bar, delta =[ sigma(ee-bar --> t(-)t-bar(-))-sigma(ee-bar --> t(+)t-bar(+)) ]/ sigma(ee-bar --> tt-bar), for the most general tt-bar gamma/Z couplings without dropping any non-standard contribution. We find that one term which is usually neglected increases with s and will eventually become non-negligible at very high energy.

Energy Spectrum of Secondary Leptons in $e^+ e^- \to t\bar{t}$ - Non-standard Interactions and CP Violation -

The process of top-quark pair production at future high-energy $e^+ e^-$ linear colliders has been investigated as a possible test of physics beyond the Standard Model. Non-standard interactions have been assumed both for the production and for the subsequent decay of the top quarks. The energy spectrum of the single lepton $l^\pm$ and the energy correlation of $l^+$ and $l^-$ emerging from the process $e^+e^-\to t\bar{t}\to l^\pm X/l^+l^-X$ are calculated. The energy- spectrum asymmetry of $l^+$ and $l^-$ is considered as a measure of CP violation. An optimal method to determine whether CP violation occurs in the production or in the decay processes is proposed.

CP-Violating Lepton-Energy Correlation in e\bar{e}\to t\bar{t}

In order to observe a signal of possible CP violation in top-quark couplings, we have studied energy correlation of the final leptons in $e^+e^-\to t\bar{t} \to \ell^+\ell^-X / \ell^\pm X$ at future linear colliders. Applying the recently-proposed optimal method, we have compared the statistical significances of CP-violation-parameter determination using double- and single-lepton distributions. We have found that the single-lepton-distribution analysis is more advantageous.
