Towards a classification of isolated $j$-invariants

We develop an algorithm to test whether a non-CM elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ gives rise to an isolated point of any degree on any modular curve of the form $X_1(N)$. This builds on prior work of Zywina which gives a method for computing the image of the adelic Galois representation associated to $E$. Running this algorithm on all elliptic curves presently in the $L$-functions and Modular Forms Database and the Stein-Watkins Database gives strong evidence for the conjecture that $E$ gives rise to an isolated point on $X_1(N)$ if and only if $j(E)=-140625/8, -9317,$ $351/4$, or $-162677523113838677$.

Computing nonsurjective primes associated to Galois representations of genus $2$ curves

For a genus $2$ curve $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobian $A$ admits only trivial geometric endomorphisms, Serre's open image theorem for abelian surfaces asserts that there are only finitely many primes $\ell$ for which the Galois action on $\ell$-torsion points of $A$ is not maximal. Building on work of Dieulefait, we give a practical algorithm to compute this finite set. The key inputs are Mitchell's classification of maximal subgroups of $\mathrm{PSp_4}(\mathbb{F}_\ell)$, sampling of the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius, and the Khare--Wintenberger modularity theorem. The algorithm has been submitted for integration into Sage, executed on all of the genus~$2$ curves with trivial endomorphism ring in the LMFDB, and the results incorporated into the homepage of each such curve.

Disparity in Selmer ranks of quadratic twists of elliptic curves

We study the parity of 2-Selmer ranks in the family of quadratic twists of an arbitrary elliptic curve E over an arbitrary number field K. We prove that the fraction of twists (of a given elliptic curve over a fixed number field) having even 2-Selmer rank exists as a stable limit over the family of twists, and we compute this fraction as an explicit product of local factors. We give an example of an elliptic curve E such that as K varies, these fractions are dense in [0, 1]. More generally, our results also apply to p-Selmer ranks of twists of 2-dimensional self-dual F_p-representations of the absolute Galois group of K by characters of order p.

Elements of given order in Tate-Shafarevich groups of abelian varieties in quadratic twist families

Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field $F$ and let $p$ be a prime. Cohen-Lenstra-Delaunay-style heuristics predict that the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A_s$ should contain an element of order $p$ for a positive proportion of quadratic twists $A_s$ of $A$. We give a general method to prove instances of this conjecture by exploiting independent isogenies of $A$. For each prime $p$, there is a large class of elliptic curves for which our method shows that a positive proportion of quadratic twists have nontrivial $p$-torsion in their Tate-Shafarevich groups. In particular, when the modular curve $X_0(3p)$ has infinitely many $F$-rational points the method applies to ``most'' elliptic curves $E$ having a cyclic $3p$-isogeny. It also applies in certain cases when $X_0(3p)$ has only finitely many points. For example, we find an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ for which a positive proportion of quadratic twists have an element of order $5$ in their Tate-Shafarevich groups. The method applies to abelian varieties of arbitrary dimension, at least in principle. As a proof of concept, we give, for each prime $p \equiv 1 \pmod 9$, examples of CM abelian threefolds with a positive proportion of quadratic twists having elements of order $p$ in their Tate-Shafarevich groups.

Three-isogeny Selmer groups and ranks of abelian varieties in quadratic twist families over a number field

For an abelian variety $A$ over a number field $F$, we prove that the average rank of the quadratic twists of $A$ is bounded, under the assumption that the multiplication-by-3 isogeny on $A$ factors as a composition of 3-isogenies over $F$. This is the first such boundedness result for an absolutely simple abelian variety $A$ of dimension greater than one. In fact, we exhibit such twist families in arbitrarily large dimension and over any number field. In dimension one, we deduce that if $E/F$ is an elliptic curve admitting a 3-isogeny, then the average rank of its quadratic twists is bounded. If $F$ is totally real, we moreover show that a positive proportion of twists have rank 0 and a positive proportion have $3$-Selmer rank 1. These results on bounded average ranks in families of quadratic twists represent new progress towards Goldfeld's conjecture -- which states that the average rank in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ should be $1/2$ -- and the first progress towards the analogous conjecture over number fields other than $\mathbb{Q}$. Our results follow from a computation of the average size of the $ϕ$-Selmer group in the family of quadratic twists of an abelian variety admitting a 3-isogeny $ϕ$.

The average sizes of two-torsion subgroups in quotients of class groups of cubic fields

We prove a generalization of a result of Bhargava regarding the average size $\mathrm{Cl}(K)[2]$ as $K$ varies among cubic fields. For a fixed set of rational primes $S$, we obtain a formula for the average size of $\mathrm{Cl}(K)/\langle S \rangle[2]$ as $K$ varies among cubic fields with a fixed signature, where $\langle S \rangle$ is the subgroup of $\mathrm{Cl}(K)$ generated by the classes of primes of $K$ above primes in $S$. As a consequence, we are able to calculate the average sizes of $K_{2n}(\mathcal{O}_K)[2]$ for $n > 0$ and for the relaxed Selmer group $\mathrm{Sel}_2^S(K)$ as $K$ varies in these same families.

Davenport-Heilbronn Theorems for Quotients of Class Groups

We prove a generalization of the Davenport-Heilbronn theorem to quotients of ideal class groups of quadratic fields by the primes lying above a fixed set of rational primes $S$. Additionally, we obtain average sizes for the relaxed Selmer group $\mathrm{Sel}_3^S(K)$ and for $\mathcal{O}_{K,S}^\times/(\mathcal{O}_{K,S}^\times)^3$ as $K$ varies among quadratic fields with a fixed signature ordered by discriminant.

On a local invariant of elliptic curves with a p-isogeny

An elliptic curve $E$ defined over a $p$-adic field $K$ with a $p$-isogeny $ϕ:E\rightarrow E^\prime$ comes equipped with an invariant $α_{ϕ/K}$ that measures the valuation of the leading term of the formal group homomorphism $Φ:\hat E \rightarrow \hat E^\prime$. We prove that if $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ is unramified and $E$ has additive, potentially supersingular reduction, then $α_{ϕ/K}$ is determined by the number of distinct geometric components on the special fibers of the minimal proper regular models of $E$ and $E^\prime$.

On the Joint Distribution Of $\mathrm{Sel}_ϕ(E/\mathbb{Q})$ and $\mathrm{Sel}_{\hatϕ}(E^\prime/\mathbb{Q})$ in Quadratic Twist Families

If $E$ is an elliptic curve with a point of order two, then work of Klagsbrun and Lemke Oliver shows that the distribution of $\dim_{\mathbb{F}_2}\mathrm{Sel}_ϕ(E^d/\mathbb{Q}) - \dim_{\mathbb{F}_2} \mathrm{Sel}_{\hatϕ}(E^{\prime d}/\mathbb{Q})$ within the quadratic twist family tends to the discrete normal distribution $\mathcal{N}(0,\frac{1}{2} \log \log X)$ as $X \rightarrow \infty$. We consider the distribution of $\mathrm{dim}_{\mathbb{F}_2} \mathrm{Sel}_ϕ(E^d/\mathbb{Q})$ within such a quadratic twist family when $\dim_{\mathbb{F}_2} \mathrm{Sel}_ϕ(E^d/\mathbb{Q}) - \dim_{\mathbb{F}_2} \mathrm{Sel}_{\hatϕ}(E^{\prime d}/\mathbb{Q})$ has a fixed value $u$. Specifically, we show that for every $r$, the limiting probability that $\dim_{\mathbb{F}_2} \mathrm{Sel}_ϕ(E^d/\mathbb{Q}) = r$ is given by an explicit constant $α_{r,u}$. The constants $α_{r,u}$ are closely related to the $u$-probabilities introduced in Cohen and Lenstra's work on the distribution of class groups, and thus provide a connection between the distribution of Selmer groups of elliptic curves and random abelian groups. Our analysis of this problem has two steps. The first step uses algebraic and combinatorial methods to directly relate the ranks of the Selmer groups in question to the dimensions of the kernels of random $\mathbb{F}_2$-matrices. This proves that the density of twists with a given $ϕ$-Selmer rank $r$ is given by $α_{r,u}$ for an unusual notion of density. The second step of the analysis utilizes techniques from analytic number theory to show that this result implies the correct asymptotics in terms of the natural notion of density.

The Elkies Curve has Rank 28 Subject only to GRH

In 2006, Elkies presented an elliptic curve with 28 independent rational points. We prove that subject to GRH, this curve has Mordell-Weil rank equal to 28 and analytic rank at most 28. We prove similar results for a previously unpublished curve of Elkies having rank 27. We also prove that subject to GRH, certain specific elliptic curves have Mordell-Weil ranks 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24. This complements the work of Jonathan Bober, who proved this claim subject to both the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer rank conjecture and GRH. This gives some new evidence that the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer rank conjecture holds for elliptic curves over Q of very high rank. Our results about Mordell-Weil ranks are proven by computing the 2-ranks of class groups of cubic fields associated to these elliptic curves. As a consequence, we also succeed in proving that, subject to GRH, the class group of a particular cubic field has 2-rank equal to 22 and that the class group of a particular totally real cubic field has 2-rank equal to 20.

The distribution of the Tamagawa ratio in the family of elliptic curves with a two-torsion point

In recent work, Bhargava and Shankar have shown that the average size of the $2$-Selmer group of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ is exactly $3$, and Bhargava and Ho have shown that the average size of the $2$-Selmer group in the family of elliptic curves with a marked point is exactly $6$. In contrast to these results, we show that the average size of the $2$-Selmer group in the family of elliptic curves with a two-torsion point is unbounded. In particular, the existence of a two-torsion point implies the existence of rational isogeny. A fundamental quantity attached to a pair of isogenous curves is the Tamagawa ratio, which measures the relative sizes of the Selmer groups associated to the isogeny and its dual. Building on previous work in which we considered the Tamagawa ratio in quadratic twist families, we show that, in the family of all elliptic curves with a two-torsion point, the Tamagawa ratio is essentially governed by a normal distribution with mean zero and growing variance.

The distribution of 2-Selmer ranks of quadratic twists of elliptic curves with partial two-torsion

This paper presents a new result concerning the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field K with a single point of order two that does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over its two-division field. We prove that at least half of all the quadratic twists of such an elliptic curve have arbitrarily large 2-Selmer rank, showing that the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of such an elliptic curve differs from the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve having either no rational two-torsion or full rational two-torsion.

A Markov model for Selmer ranks in families of twists

We study the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the family of quadratic twists of an elliptic curve E over an arbitrary number field K. Under the assumption that Gal(K(E[2])/K) = S_3 we show that the density (counted in a non-standard way) of twists with Selmer rank r exists for all positive integers r, and is given via an equilibrium distribution, depending only on a single parameter (the `disparity'), of a certain Markov process that is itself independent of E and K. More generally, our results also apply to p-Selmer ranks of twists of 2-dimensional self-dual F_p-representations of the absolute Galois group of K by characters of order p.

A Family of Elliptic Curves with a Lower Bound on 2-Selmer Ranks of Quadratic Twists

For any number field K with a complex place, we present an infinite family of elliptic curves defined over K such that $dim \mathbb{F}_2 Sel_2(E^F/K) \ge dim \mathbb{F}_2 E^F(K)[2] + r_2$ for every quadratic twist E^F of every curve E in this family, where r_2 is the number of complex places of K. This provides a counterexample to a conjecture appearing in work of Mazur and Rubin.

Selmer Ranks of Quadratic Twists of Elliptic Curves with Partial Rational Two-Torsion

This paper investigates which integers can appear as 2-Selmer ranks within the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve E defined over a number field K with E(K)[2] = Z/2Z. We show that if E does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]), then subject only to constant 2-Selmer parity, each non-negative integer appears infinitely often as the 2-Selmer rank of a quadratic twist of E. If E has a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]) but not over K, then we prove the same result for 2-Selmer ranks greater than or equal to r_2, the number of complex places of K. We also obtain results about the minimum number of twists of E with rank 0, and subject to standard conjectures, the number of twists with rank 1, provided E does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K.
