Bloch states in light transport through a perforated metal

Light transport in a metal with two-dimensional hole arrays is considered. Analytical expression for a transmission coefficient in periodic, isolated and disordered cases are derived, assuming the existence of waveguide modes transverse tunneling in two-dimensional plane perpendicular to traveling direction of light. The one dimensional case of periodic holes, due to its simplicity, is investigated in detail. In the dilute metal regime, when metal fraction is small, our numerical study of the transmission coefficient of central diffracted wave indicates the existence of a minimum which is completely independent of an incident wavelength. Further increasing of metal fraction leads to the unusual monotonic increasing of central diffracted wave transmission. The role of the surface plasmons is discussed.

Inverse Smith-Purcell effect near rough surfaces

Absorption of a photon by an electron moving parallel to a rough surface is studied. In the weak scattering regime we have evaluated the absorption probability of absorption of a single photon. It is shown the absorption probability with diffusional contribution becomes large by a lin/l factor compared to the analogous result with the single scattering contribution. The maximum of probability takes place for the infrared wavelengths and strongly depends on the particle energy. We also discuss the case of two-dimensional periodical surface profile and indicate optimal conditions for maximal absorption probability. The results can be used in electron energy gain spectroscopy and in laser-driven acceleration.

Faraday Rotation in a Disordered Medium

The Faraday rotation angle is calculated in a diffusive regime in a three dimensional disordered slab. It is shown that it is an oscillating function of the magnetic field or the mediums internal properties, and is proportional to the ratio of the inelastic mean free path to the mean free path, that is to the average number of photon scatterings. The maximum rotation is achieved at frequencies when the photons elastic mean free path is minimal. We have obtained the rotation angle of polar backscattered light taking into account the maximally crossed diagrams. The latter leads to an ellipticity in the backscattered wave that can serve as precursor of weak localization.

Spectrum of Radiation from Rough Surfaces

Radiation from a charged particle travelling parallel to a rough surface has been considered. Spectral-angular intensity is calculated in the weak scattering regime. It is shown that the main contribution to the radiation intensity is determined by the multiple scattering of polaritons induced by a charge on the surface. Multiple scattering effects lead to strong frequency dependence of radiation intensity. Possible applications in beam and surface diagnostics are discussed.

Radiation in Systems with Near Zero Dielectric Constant

We discuss radiation effects in systems with near zero dielectric constant. An enhancement of intensity by example of transition and diffusive radiations is demonstrated. A sharp peak in the transition radiation spectral-angular intensity is predicted. Numerical estimates for specific systems are made and possible applications are discussed.

DNA Bubble Life Time in Denaturation

We have investigated the denaturation bubble life time for a homogeneous as well as for a heterogeneous DNA within a Poland-Scheraga model. It is shown that at criticality the bubble life time for a homogeneous DNA is finite provided that the loop entropic exponent c>2 and has a scaling dependence on DNA length for c<2. Heterogeneity in the thermodynamical limit makes the bubble life time infinite for any entropic exponent.

Smith-Purcell Radiation from Rough Surfaces

Radiation of a charged particle moving parallel to a inhomogeneous surface is considered. Within a single formalism periodic and random gratings are examined. For the periodically inhomogeneous surface we derive new expressions for the dispersion relation and the spectral-angular intensity. In particular, for a given observation direction two wavelengths are emitted instead of one wavelength of the standard Smith-Purcell effect. For a rough surface we show that the main contribution to the radiation intensity is given by surface polaritons induced on the interface between two media. These polaritons are multiply scattered on the roughness of surface and convert into real photons. The spectral-angular intensity is calculated and its dependence on different parameters is revealed.

How adsorption influences DNA denaturation

The thermally induced denaturation of DNA in the presence of attractive solid surface is studied. The two strands of DNA are modeled via two coupled flexible chains without volume interactions. If the two strands are adsorbed on the surface, the denaturation phase-transition disappears. Instead, there is a smooth crossover to a weakly naturated state. Our second conclusion is that even when the inter-strand attraction alone is too weak for creating a naturated state at the given temperature, and also the surface-strand attraction alone is too weak for creating an adsorbed state, the combined effect of the two attractions can lead to a naturated and adsorbed state.

Observation of Resonant Diffusive Radiation in Random Multilayered Systems

Diffusive Radiation is a new type of radiation predicted to occur in randomly inhomogeneous media due to the multiple scattering of pseudophotons. This theoretical effect is now observed experimentally. The radiation is generated by the passage of electrons of energy 200KeV-2.2MeV through a random stack of films in the visible light region. The radiation intensity increases resonantly provided the Cherenkov condition is satisfied for the average dielectric constant of the medium. The observed angular dependence and electron resonance energy are in agreement with the theoretical predictions. These observations open a road to application of diffusive radiation in particle detection, astrophysics, soft X-ray generation and etc.. `

Resonant Diffusive Radiation in Random Multilayered Systems

We have theoretically shown that the yield of diffuse radiation generated by relativistic electrons passing random multilayered systems can be increased when a resonant condition is met. Resonant condition can be satisfied for the wavelength region representing visible light as well as soft X-rays. The intensity of diffusive soft X-rays for specific multilayered systems consisting of two components is compared with the intensity of Cherenkov radiation. For radiation at photon energy of $99.4eV$, the intensity of Resonant Diffusive Radiation (RDR) generated by $5MeV$ electrons passing a $Be/Si$ multilayer exceeds the intensity of Cherenkov radiation by a factor of $\approx 60$ for electrons with the same energy passing a $Si$ foil. For a photon energy of $453eV$ and $13MeV$ electrons passing $Be/Ti$ multilayer generate RDR exceeding Cherenkov radiation generated by electrons passing a $Ti$ foils by a factor $\approx 130$.

Adhesion Induced DNA Naturation

DNA adsorption and naturation is modeled via two interacting flexible homopolymers coupled to a solid surface. DNA denatures if the entropy gain for unbinding the two strands overcomes the loss of binding energy. When adsorbed to a surface, the entropy gain is smaller than in the bulk, leading to a stronger binding and, upon neglecting self-avoidance, absence of a denatured phase. Now consider conditions where the binding potentials are too weak for naturation, and the surface potential too weak to adsorb single strands. In a variational approach it is shown that their combined action may lead to a naturated adsorbed phase. Conditions for the absence of naturation and adsorption are derived too. The phase diagram is constructed qualitatively.

Unzipping of DNA with correlated base-sequence

We consider force-induced unzipping transition for a heterogeneous DNA model with a correlated base-sequence. Both finite-range and long-range correlated situations are considered. It is shown that finite-range correlations increase stability of DNA with respect to the external unzipping force. Due to long-range correlations the number of unzipped base-pairs displays two widely different scenarios depending on the details of the base-sequence: either there is no unzipping phase-transition at all, or the transition is realized via a sequence of jumps with magnitude comparable to the size of the system. Both scenarios are different from the behavior of the average number of unzipped base-pairs (non-self-averaging). The results can be relevant for explaining the biological purpose of correlated structures in DNA.

Force-induced unzipping of DNA with long-range correlated sequence

We consider force-induced unzipping transition for a heterogeneous DNA model with a long-range correlated base-sequence. It is shown that as compared to the uncorrelated situation, long-range correlations smear the unzipping phase-transition, change its universality class and lead to non-self-averaging: the averaged behavior strongly differs from the typical ones. Several basic scenarios for this typical behavior are revealed and explained. The results can be relevant for explaining the biological purpose of long-range correlations in DNA.

New Phase Transition in Polymer Solutions with Multicomponent Solvent

Considering the density-density correlation function of a concentrated polymer solution with multicomponent solvent we find a phase transition due to the heterogeneity of excluded volume constant. This new phase transition implies a strong enhancement of the scattered light intensity in the critical region, which can explain a recent experiment showing strong light scattering from a ternary polymer system consisting of polyethylene oxide (PEO) dissolved in nitroethane and 3methyl-pentane.

Correlation function of random heteropolymer solutions

We study the density-density correlation function of the dense random heteropolymer solutions. We show that a phase transition is possible due to the heterogeneity of polymers. We also show that the critical behavior of the system is described by the O(N) model at N=0.

New mechanism of X-ray radiation from a relativistic charged particle in a dielectric random medium

We have considered X-ray radiation of a relativistic charged particle moving in a system consisting of microspheres distributed randomly in a dielectric material. A new mechanism based on the diffusional scattering of pseudophotons is suggested. The result leads to a stronger dependence of radiation intensity on the particle energy, than that predicted by the traditional transition radiation theory, and explains a recent experiment on such a system of randomly distributed superconducting granules.
