Universal anti-baryon density in $e^+e^-$,$γp$, pp, pA and AA collisions

We compiled the systematical measurements of anti-nucleus production in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions as well as those in $pp$, $p\bar{p}$, $γp$ and $e^{+}e^{-}$ at various beam energies. The anti-baryon phase space density inferred from $\bar{d}/\bar{p}$ ratio in $A+A$, $p+A$, $pp(\bar{p})$ and $γp$ collisions is found to follow a universal distribution as a function of center of mass of beam energy and can be described in a statistical model. We demonstrated that anti-baryon density in all the collisions is the highest when the collisions are dominated by the processes of $g+g$ or $\bar{q}+g$. In $e^+e^-$ collisions at LEP, the cross section of $q\bar{q}g$ is suppressed by a factor of strong coupling constant $α_s$ relative to $q\bar{q}$. This can consistently explain the $\bar{d}$ suppression observed by ALEPH relative to that in $e^+e^-\to ggg$ by ARGUS. We discuss the implications to the baryon enhancement at high transverse momentum at RHIC when jet is quenched.

Overview of charm production at RHIC

In this presentation, I discussed a) the charm total cross-section and its comparisons to measurements at other beam energies and pQCD calculations; b) the semileptonic decay of charmed hadrons and the sensitivity of non-photonic leptons to charm quark collective flow and freeze-out; c) semileptonic decayed electron spectrum at high transverse momentum, its comparison to FONLL in p+p and d+Au collisions, and heavy-quark energy loss in Au+Au collisions.

Extracting the charm cross section from semileptonic decays into muons

We propose a sensitive measurement of the charm total cross-section at RHIC through muon identification from charm semileptonic decay at low transverse momentum ($p_T$). This can test the binary-collision scaling ($N_{bin}$) properties of the charm total cross-section and be used to study whether heavy-flavor quarks, which are used as a probe, are produced exclusively at the initial impact in hadron-hadron collisions. The effect of the charm semileptonic decay form factor on extracting the total charm cross section and on the shape of the lepton spectra are also discussed in detail. We conclude that lepton spectra from charmed hadron decays at transverse momentum $p_T\simeq1.0$ GeV/$c$ are sensitive to the charmed hadron spectrum shape. Therefore, the interactions of heavy quarks with the medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, especially the flow effects, can be extracted from the lepton spectra from charmed hadron decays at low $p_T$.

Measurement of $Δ$ and $K^{*}$ Production in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

The measurements of the transverse momentum spectra and the invariant mass distributions of $Δ(1232)$ $\to πp$, $K^{*}(892)\to πK$ resonances in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV using the STAR Time Projection Chamber (TPC) at RHIC are presented. The in-medium modification of the $Δ$ and $K^{*}$ mass and width has been studied as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$). The particle ratios $K^{*}/K$, $Δ/p$ and the average transverse momentum ($ $) as a function of different collision centrality has been reported. The nuclear modification factors ($R_{CP}$ and $R_{dAu}$) of $Δ$ and $K^{*}$ are discussed.

Charged Pion Spectra in Au+Au Collisions at \srt=62.4 GeV

The combination of the ionization energy loss (dE/dx) from Time Projection Chamber (TPC) at $\simeq8$% resolution and multi-gap resistive plate chamber time-of-flight (TOF) at 85$ps$ provides powerful particle identification. We present spectra of identified charged pions from transverse momentum $p_T\simeq0.2$ GeV/c to ~7-8 GeV/c in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ GeV. Physics implications will be discussed.

Open charm production at RHIC

In this report, we present the measurements of open charm production at mid-rapidity in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies. The techniques of direct reconstruction of open charm via its hadronic decay and indirect measurements through its semileptonic decay are discussed. The beam energy dependence of total charm cross section, electron \pt spectra, and their comparisons to theoretical calculations, including NLO pQCD, are presented. The electron spectra in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at \srt=200 GeV show significant variation. The open charm absolute cross section at midrapidity and its centrality dependence are compared to those of inclusive hadrons integrated over $p_{T}>1.5$ GeV/c.

Resonances at RHIC

In this report, we discuss the measurement of the hadronic decay modes of resonances in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, emphasizing on RHIC results. The study of resonances can provide: (1) the yield and spectra of more particles with different properties to study whether the system is in thermal equilibrium; (2) an independent probe of the time evolution of the source from chemical to kinetic freeze-out and detailed information on hadronic interaction at later stage; (3) the study of medium effects at late stages of the collisions; (4) a measurement of flavor and baryon/meson dependence of particle production at intermediate $p_{T}$ ($>2$ GeV/$c$).

Transverse Dynamics at RHIC

Studies of , transverse momentum spectra and anisotropy flow from nuclear collisions at RHIC indicate early thermalization and strong collective expansion. We propose a systematic study of the anisotropy parameter $v_2$ and the transverse momentum distributions of $ϕ, Ω, D^0, Λ_C$ and $J / ψ$ in order to extract information on partonic collective flow.

Resonance Studies at STAR

We report on the observed signals of ${K^{\star0}(892)}\toπK$ and $ϕ(1020)\to K^{+}K^{-}$ using the mixed-event method with powerful statistics from the large acceptance and highly efficient STAR TPC. Preliminary results from the first observation of such states from the year-one STAR data in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=130$ GeV Au-Au collisions are presented. The $K^{\star0}/h^{-}$ ratios with an assumed $K^{\star0}$ $p_{T}$ inverse slope of 300MeV are compatible with that from pp at ISR. For 14% central Au+Au collisions, we observe $K^{\star0}/h^{-}=0.060\pm0.007(stat)$ and $\bar{K^{\star0}}/h^{-}=0.058\pm0.007(stat)$. We show that $\barΛ/Λ=0.77\pm0.07(stat)$ from this method is consistent with the measurement via decay topology.

Production of Light (anti-)Nuclei with E864 at the AGS

Light nuclei can be produced in the central reaction zone via coalescence in relativistic heavy ion collisions. E864 at BNL has measured the production of ten stable light nuclei with nuclear number of A=1 to A=7 at rapidity $y\simeq1.9$ and $p_{T}/A\leq300MeV/c$. Data were taken with a Au beam of momentum of 11.5 A $GeV/c$ on a Pb or Pt target with different experimental settings. The invariant yields show a striking exponential dependence on nuclear number over ten orders of magnitudes with a penalty factor of about 50 per additional nucleon. This penalty factor is used to estimate the strange quark matter (strangelet) production in the baryon rich and strangeness enhanced environment. The measurements of the production of antiproton, antideuteron, hypernuclei ($^{3}_ΛH$,$^{4}_ΛH$), and strongly unstable nuclear states ($^{4}H$,$^{5}Li$, $^{5}Li^{*}$, $^{5}He$) are presented as well. A model of local thermal equilibrium with radial flow at the kinetic freeze-out with a temperature of $T=112\pm10MeV$, chemical potential of $μ_{B}=503\pm20MeV$ and flow velocity of about $\sqrt{V_{\perp}^{2}}\simeq0.5c$ seems to be able to describe the data in the gross scale with the exceptions of the production of antihyperons and hypernuclei. The large antihyperon production and the extra penalty for hypernuclei production are quite surprising.

Search for positively charged strangelets and other related results with E864 at the AGS

We report on the latest results in the search for positively charged strangelets from E864's 96/97 run at the AGS with sensitivity of about $8\times 10^{-9}$ per central collision. This contribution also contains new results of a search for highly charged strangelets with $Z=+3$. Production of light nuclei, such as $^6He$ and $^6Li$, is presented as well. Measurements of yields of these rarely produced isotopes near midrapidity will help constrain the production levels of strangelets via coalescence. E864 also measures antiproton production which includes decays from antihyperons. Comparisons with antiproton yields measured by E878 as a function of centrality indicate a large antihyperon-to-antiproton ratio in central collisions.
