Reference-Governed Distributed Safe Gradient Flow for Safe Optimal Output Agreement of Multi-Agent Systems

This paper studies safe optimal output agreement for nonlinear multi-agent systems with output safety constraints. Existing safe feedback optimization methods often implement gradient-flow dynamics directly through the plant input, which may require high-order control barrier functions (HOCBFs). The resulting derivative-chain design is tuning-sensitive and can introduce additional equilibrium conditions that alter the steady-state optimal solution. We propose a reference-governed two-layer architecture that separates lower-layer output regulation from upper-layer distributed optimization. The upper layer filters the reference gradient flow through first-order control barrier function constraints, which are easier to tune and preserve the steady-state optimality structure of the original agreement problem. The lower layer uses an internal-model-based output regulator with a reference-dependent Lyapunov function, from which dynamic safety margins (DSMs) are constructed to certify transient output safety. We prove forward invariance, optimal-solution preservation under DSM-compatibility conditions, and convergence via a Lyapunov small-gain argument. Simulations validate safe convergence, show advantages over HOCBF-based feedback optimization, and demonstrate adaptive tangential objective shaping for escaping spurious equilibria induced by nonconvex obstacles.

Real-Time Coordinated Operation of Off-Grid Wind Powered Multi-Electrolyzer Systems Considering Thermal Dynamics and HTO Safety

Coordinated operation of alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) systems with multiple electrolyzers under fluctuating renewable power input is challenging due to varying power availability and dynamic safety constraints. Moreover, the conventional separation between optimization and control may result in inconsistent decisions across timescales. To address these issues, this paper proposes a two-layer coordinated operation method integrating feedback optimization (FO) with a projection-based safety layer. The FO layer generates real-time reference inputs to improve renewable energy utilization, while the safety layer corrects these inputs to ensure compliance with operational and safety constraints. To explicitly address the safety constraints arising from the inertial dynamics of AWE systems, discrete-time control barrier function theory is incorporated into the safety layer, thereby enhancing safety assurance and online computational tractability. Theoretical analysis establishes the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Case studies based on annual wind generation data show that the proposed method achieves high energy utilization, maintains safe operation, and demonstrates online applicability, scalability, and robustness.

Synthesizing Safety in Infinite-Horizon Optimal Control for Disturbed High-Relative-Degree Systems via Barrier-Regulating Auxiliary Variables

Optimal stabilization of safety-critical nonlinear systems requires balancing long-term performance and strict safety constraints. Existing quadratic-programming-based control barrier function (CBF) safety filters are point-wise and may exhibit myopic behavior and local trapping when the safeguarding action conflicts with the nominal optimal control. This paper develops a safety-aware infinite-horizon optimal control framework by embedding a barrier-Lyapunov function (BLF)-based safeguarding action into the system dynamics and introducing a barrier-regulating auxiliary variable, thereby reformulating the original constrained problem as an unconstrained one on an extended state space. To mitigate local trapping, we introduce an adaptive alignment-conditioned tangential excitation orthogonal to the safety direction, with activation adaptively modulated by the degree of directional alignment between the nominal and safeguarding controllers, and incorporate it as an admissible $\mathcal{L}2$ disturbance in an $H\infty$ formulation. For high-relative-degree systems under disturbances, we further augment the recursive high-order safe-set construction with barrier compensation terms to obtain a high-order BLF and formulate an adversarial disturbance attenuation problem, which is approximately solved via safe-exploration-enhanced online critic learning. Simulations demonstrate reduced local trapping, improved safety--performance trade-offs, and safe operation under disturbances.

A Predictive and Sampled-Data Barrier Method for Safe and Efficient Quadrotor Control

This paper proposes a cascaded control framework for quadrotor trajectory tracking with formal safety guarantees. First, we design a controller consisting of an outer-loop position model predictive control (MPC) and an inner-loop nonlinear attitude control, enabling decoupling of position safety and yaw orientation. Second, since quadrotor safety constraints often involve high relative degree, we adopt high order control barrier functions (HOCBFs) to guarantee safety. To employ HOCBFs in the MPC formulation that has formal guarantees, we extend HOCBFs to sampled-data HOCBF (SdHOCBFs) by introducing compensation terms, ensuring safety over the entire sampling interval. We show that embedding SdHOCBFs as control-affine constraints into the MPC formulation guarantees both safety and optimality while preserving convexity for real-time implementations. Finally, comprehensive simulations are conducted to demonstrate the safety guarantee and high efficiency of the proposed method compared to existing methods.

HJB-based online safety-embedded critic learning for uncertain systems with self-triggered mechanism

This paper presents a learning-based optimal control framework for safety-critical systems with parametric uncertainties, addressing both time-triggered and self-triggered controller implementations. First, we develop a robust control barrier function (RCBF) incorporating Lyapunov-based compensation terms to rigorously guarantee safety despite parametric uncertainties. Building on this safety guarantee, we formulate the constrained optimal control problem as the minimization of a novel safety-embedded value function, where the RCBF is involved via a Lagrange multiplier that adaptively balances safety constraints against optimal stabilization objectives. To enhance computational efficiency, we propose a self-triggered implementation mechanism that reduces control updates while maintaining dual stability-safety guarantees. The resulting self-triggered constrained Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation is solved through an online safety-embedded critic learning framework, with the Lagrange multiplier computed in real time to ensure safety. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in achieving both safety and control performance.
