Anomalous magnetocaloric effects in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$

We investigate the transverse-field thermodynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, whose tilted screw-chain geometry and anisotropic Land\'e $g$ tensor generate spatially modulated Zeeman couplings. Angle-resolved magnetocaloric-effect (MCE) measurements reveal a high-field temperature minimum near the transverse-field Ising critical field for $H\parallel[110]$ that persists and shifts only weakly upon field rotation. Tensor-network calculations show that the rotation-induced staggered transverse field rapidly lowers the Ising critical field and that the magnetic Gr\"uneisen ratio changes sign near the high-field temperature minimum, consistent with experiment. Our results establish that a dominant MCE response can persist away from the Ising critical region, suggesting a route to magnetic cooling by tailoring anisotropic Zeeman-coupling configurations in quantum magnets.

Ground state and magnetic transitions of the orthorhombic antiferromagnet CaCo$_2$TeO$_6$

We report the systematic synthesis, crystal structure, magnetization, and powder neutron diffraction of single crystalline and polycrystalline CaCo$_2$TeO$_6$ samples. CaCo$_2$TeO$_6$ crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with $Pnma$ space group, featuring chains of edge-shared CoO$_6$ octahedra arranged in a honeycomb pattern. Two antiferromagnetic transitions are observed at $T$$_{N1}$ = 14.4 K and $T$$_{N2}$ = 16.2 K, corresponding to two long-range magnetic orders with propagation vectors of $\bf{k}$$_1$ = (0, 0, 0) and $\bf{k}$$_2$ = (0.125, 0, 0.25), respectively. The ground state is determined as a canted up-up-down-down zigzag spin configuration along the $c$ axis, wherein the magnetic moments of Co1 and Co2 ions are 3.4(1) and 2.1(1)$\mu$$_B$, respectively. Successive spin-flop transitions appear with the increasing magnetic field applied along the easy axis ($c$ axis), accompanied by depression of the antiferromagnetic orders and enhancement of residual magnetic entropy. The field-induced spin-disordered state suggests that CaCo$_2$TeO$_6$ may be an ideal candidate for studying frustrated magnetism.

Quantum annealing of a frustrated magnet

Quantum annealing, which involves quantum tunnelling among possible solutions, has state-of-the-art applications not only in quickly finding the lowest-energy configuration of a complex system, but also in quantum computing. Here we report a single-crystal study of the frustrated magnet $\alpha$-CoV$_2$O$_6$, consisting of a triangular arrangement of ferromagnetic Ising spin chains without evident structural disorder. We observe quantum annealing phenomena resulting from time-reversal symmetry breaking in a tiny transverse field. Below $\sim$ 1 K, the system exhibits no indication of approaching the lowest-energy state for at least 15 hours in zero transverse field, but quickly converges towards that configuration with a nearly temperature-independent relaxation time of $\sim$ 10 seconds in a transverse field of $\sim$ 3.5 mK. Our many-body simulations show qualitative agreement with the experimental results, and suggest that a tiny transverse field can profoundly enhance quantum spin fluctuations, triggering rapid quantum annealing process from topological metastable Kosterlitz-Thouless phases, at low temperatures.

Field-induced antiferromagnetism and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior in the quasi-one-dimensional Ising-Antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8

We investigate the low-temperature properties of the Ising-like screw chain antiferromagnet SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under a longitudinal magnetic field by susceptibility and $^{51}$V NMR measurements. The bulk susceptibility $χ$ shows an onset of long-range Ising-antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and the suppression of the order by field with the Néel temperature dropped from 5.1~K to 2~K when field increases from 0.1~T to 4~T. The suppression of the AFM order by the field is also observed by the NMR spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation $1/T_1$. At fields above 4~T, $χ$ shows a low-temperature upturn, which is consistent with the onset of a transverse antiferromagnetic order as supported by the quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A line splitting in the NMR spectra is also observed at high temperatures. We show that the line split characterizes the onset of a short-range transverse antiferromagnetic order with magnetic moments orientated along the crystalline [110]/[1$\bar1$0] directions. The $1/T_1$ data at higher temperature show a power-law behavior $1/T_1{\sim}T^α$, which is consistent with the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid behavior. With increasing the field, the power-law exponent $α$ changes from negative to positive, which clearly shows an inversion of the Luttinger exponent $η$, where the dominant low-energy spin fluctuations switch from the longitudinal type to the transverse type at a high field of 7~T.

Quantum criticality of the Ising-like screw chain antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8 in a transverse magnetic field

The quantum criticality of an Ising-like screw chain antiferromagnet SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, with a transverse magnetic field applied along the crystalline $a$-axis, is investigated by ultra-low temperature NMR measurements. The Néel temperature is rapidly and continuously suppressed by the field, giving rise to a quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_{C{_1}}$$\approx$~7.0~T. Surprisingly, a second QCP at $H_{C{_2}}\approx$~7.7~T featured with gapless excitations is resolved from both the double-peak structure of the field dependent spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/^{51}T_1$ at low temperatures and the weakly temperature-dependent $1/^{51}T_1$ at this field. Our data, combined with numerical calculations, suggest that the induced effective staggered transverse field significantly lowers the critical fields, and leads to an exposed QCP at $H_{C{_2}}$, which belongs to the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising universality.

A single-crystal neutron diffraction study on magnetic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8

The magnetic structure of the spin-chain antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8 is determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction experiment. The system undergoes magnetic long range order below T_N = 4.96 K. The moment of 2.16μ_B per Co at 1.6 K in the screw chain running along the c axis alternates in the c-axis. The moments of neighboring screw chains are arranged antiferromagnetically along one in-plane axis and ferromagnetically along the other in-plane axis. This magnetic configuration breaks the 4-fold symmetry of the tetragonal crystal structure and leads to two equally populated magnetic twins with antiferromagnetic vector in the a or b axis. The very similar magnetic state to the isostructural BaCo2V2O8 warrants SrCo2V2O8 another interesting half-integer spin-chain antiferromagnet for investigation on quantum antiferromagnetism.

51V-NMR study of antiferromagnetic state and spin dynamics in the quasi-one-dimensional BaCo2V2O8

We report on our 51V-NMR study of static and dynamical magnetic properties in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8. Although the NMR spectrum shows well-defined antiferromagnetic (AF) order in the Néel ground state, the AF characteristic from the NMR spectrum is incomplete between 3.5 K and TN= 5.4 K, which could be affected by quantum spin fluctuations. The AF NMR spectrum indicates two V sites experiencing different magnetic field magnitudes, HA1=2.1 kOe and HA2=3.8 kOe. These internal fields could be explained by accounting for the classical and the pseudo-dipolar fields from Co2+ spins with a proposed magnetic structure based on the neutron diffraction measurements. In the paramagnetic state, the nuclear spin relaxation is dominated by AF spin fluctuations through the dipolar-type coupling between V and surrounding Co2+ ions. The linear relation between the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1T and the magnetic susceptibility chi indicates that the Q component of magnetic susceptibility chi(Q) is roughly proportional to chi, where Q is the AF wave number. A change in slope of 1/T1T with respect to χaround 150 K suggests a change in the AF spin fluctuation spectrum.

Magnetic structure and spin dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8

We report a neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation muSR study of static and dynamical magnetic properties of BaCo2V2O8, a quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain system. A proposed model for the antiferromagnetic structure includes: a propagation vector k_AF = (0, 0, 1), independent of external magnetic fields for fields below a critical value H_c(T). The ordered moments, of 2.18 μ_B per Co ion, are aligned along the crystallographic c-axis. Within the screw chains, along the c axis, the moments are arranged antiferromagnetically. In the basal planes the spins are arranged ferromagnetically (forming zig-zags paths) along one of the axis and antiferromagnetically along the other. The temperature dependence of the sub-lattice magnetization is consistent with the expectations of the 3D Ising model. A similar behavior is observed for the internal static fields at different muon stopping sites. Muon time spectra measured at weak longitudinal fields and temperatures much higher than T_N can be well described using a single muon site with an exponential muon spin relaxation that gradually changes into an stretched exponential on approaching T_N. The temperature-induced changes of the relaxation suggest that the Co fluctuations dramatically slow down and the system becomes less homogeneous as it approaches the antiferromagnetic state.
