TERRA: A Hierarchical Parallel Training and Memory Orchestration Framework for High-Resolution AI-based Earth Modeling

Training high-resolution AI-based Earth forecasting models is memory-intensive. Window-based Swin Transformers reduce the quadratic cost of global attention, but existing distributed systems such as AERIS primarily target pixel-level models and do not jointly support convolutional sampling modules and shifted-window execution. Long-lead rollout finetuning further increases activation memory. To address these challenges, we present TERRA, a hierarchical parallel training framework for high-resolution Earth forecasting. TERRA introduces Sampling-Aware Window, Sequence, and Tensor Parallelism (SAWSTP), which preserves spatially contiguous layouts for sampling modules and routes tokens into topology-aware ragged window layouts for Transformer execution. For long-lead finetuning, Memory Orchestration (MO) provides rollout-aware checkpoint planning and combines input buffering with budget-constrained activation offloading. Experiments on the $1/12^\circ$ GLORYS-based Wenhai workload show that TERRA supports models with up to 11.4B parameters on 96 H200 GPUs and sustains up to $39.76$ PFLOPS, achieving $65.0\%$ strong-scaling and $94.1\%$ weak-scaling efficiency. Compared with checkpoint-only policies, MO further reduces peak allocated GPU memory by $32.2\%$--$51.8\%$ with at most $20.0\%$ step-time overhead, which makes finetuning with smaller patch sizes and longer rollouts feasible for improved forecasting accuracy.

Intensification of Oceanic Inverse Energy Cascade Under Global Warming

Kinetic energy (KE) cascade in the turbulent ocean is pivotal in connecting diverse scales of oceanic motions, redistributing energy, and influencing ocean circulation and climate variability. However, its response to global warming remains poorly understood. Using a 24-year satellite altimetry dataset, we identify a pronounced intensification of inverse geostrophic kinetic energy cascade at the sea surface across most ocean regions during 1994-2017, with cascade amplitude increasing by 1% to 2% per decade. This intensification occurs not only in energetic regions but also in expansive quiescent areas. Contributing factors to this intensification of geostrophic KE cascade include enhanced vertical shear of horizontal velocity, deepened mixed layer, strengthened stratification, weakened eddy killing as well as changes in the KE budget. The dominant factors vary across regions. Our findings offer new insights into the ocean's response to global warming and improve understanding of feedback mechanisms for ocean circulation changes.

Glider Path Design and Control for Reconstructing Three-Dimensional Structures of Oceanic Mesoscale Eddies

Underwater gliders offer effective means in oceanic surveys with a major task in reconstructing the three-dimensional hydrographic field of a mesoscale eddy. This paper considers three key issues in the hydrographic reconstruction of mesoscale eddies with the sampled data from the underwater gliders. It first proposes using the Thin Plate Spline (TPS) as the interpolation method for the reconstruction with a blocking scheme to speed up the computation. It then formulates a procedure for selecting glider path design that minimizes the reconstruction errors among a set of pathway formations. Finally we provide a glider path control procedure to guide the glider to follow to designed pathways as much as possible in the presence of ocean current. A set of optimization algorithms are experimented and several with robust glider control performance on a simulated eddy are identified.

HSC-GPT: A Large Language Model for Human Settlements Construction

The field of human settlement construction encompasses a range of spatial designs and management tasks, including urban planning and landscape architecture design. These tasks involve a plethora of instructions and descriptions presented in natural language, which are essential for understanding design requirements and producing effective design solutions. Recent research has sought to integrate natural language processing (NLP) and generative artificial intelligence (AI) into human settlement construction tasks. Due to the efficient processing and analysis capabilities of AI with data, significant successes have been achieved in design within this domain. However, this task still faces several fundamental challenges. The semantic information involved includes complex spatial details, diverse data source formats, high sensitivity to regional culture, and demanding requirements for innovation and rigor in work scenarios. These factors lead to limitations when applying general generative AI in this field, further exacerbated by a lack of high-quality data for model training. To address these challenges, this paper first proposes HSC-GPT, a large-scale language model framework specifically designed for tasks in human settlement construction, considering the unique characteristics of this domain.

High-performance dendritic metamaterial absorber for broadband and near-meter wave radar

Absorbing materials in ultra-high frequency (UHF) band has constantly been a major challenge. The size of the absorber in UHF band is large, whereas the resonant frequency band is narrow. According to Rozanov's theory, two kinds of composite metamaterial absorbers are designed to realize the requirements of low-frequency broadband metamaterial microwave absorber: the magnetic-metamaterial composite absorber1 (MA1) and the dielectric-metamaterial composite absorber 2 (MA2). In the range of approximately 300-1000MHz, both absorbers achieve absorption of over 90% and feature good adaptability to the incident angle of the incident wave. The absorbers also present good absorption rate of over 80% in the range of 0-45 degree. Processing samples of indium tin oxide (ITO) resistance film and polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam board feature simple preparation and low cost, and the most important thing is to consider the weight problem, which features certain advantages in terms of use.

A sequential surrogate method for reliability analysis based on radial basis function

A radial basis function (RBF) based sequential surrogate reliability method (SSRM) is proposed, in which a special optimization problem is solved to update the surrogate model of the limit state function (LSF) iteratively. The objective of the optimization problem is to find a new point to maximize the probability density function (PDF), subject to the constraints that the new point is on the approximated LSF and the minimum distance to the existing points is greater than or equal to the given distance. By updating the surrogate model with the new points, the surrogate model of the LSF becomes more and more accurate in the important region with a high failure probability and on the LSF boundary. Moreover, the accuracy of the unimportant region is also improved within the iteration due to the minimum distance constraint. SSRM takes advantage of the information of PDF and LSF to capture the failure features, which decreases the number of the expensive LSF evaluations. Six numerical examples show that SSRM improves the accuracy of the surrogate model in the important region around the failure boundary with small number of samples and has better adaptability to the nonlinear LSF, hence increases the accuracy and efficiency of the reliability analysis.

Bow-tie topological features of metabolic networks and the functional significance

Exploring the structural topology of genome-based large-scale metabolic network is essential for investigating possible relations between structure and functionality. Visualization would be helpful for obtaining immediate information about structural organization. In this work, metabolic networks of 75 organisms were investigated from a topological point of view. A spread bow-tie model was proposed to give a clear visualization of the bow-tie structure for metabolic networks. The revealed topological pattern helps to design more efficient algorithm specifically for metabolic networks. This coarse-grained graph also visualizes the vulnerable connections in the network, and thus could have important implication for disease studies and drug target identifications. In addition, analysis on the reciprocal links and main cores in the GSC part of bow-tie also reveals that the bow-tie structure of metabolic networks has its own intrinsic and significant features which are significantly different from those of random networks.
