Approximation Algorithm for Minimum Weight $(k,m)$-CDS Problem in Unit Disk Graph

In a wireless sensor network, the virtual backbone plays an important role. Due to accidental damage or energy depletion, it is desirable that the virtual backbone is fault-tolerant. A fault-tolerant virtual backbone can be modeled as a $k$-connected $m$-fold dominating set ($(k,m)$-CDS for short). In this paper, we present a constant approximation algorithm for the minimum weight $(k,m)$-CDS problem in unit disk graphs under the assumption that $k$ and $m$ are two fixed constants with $m\geq k$. Prior to this work, constant approximation algorithms are known for $k=1$ with weight and $2\leq k\leq 3$ without weight. Our result is the first constant approximation algorithm for the $(k,m)$-CDS problem with general $k,m$ and with weight. The performance ratio is $(α+2.5kρ)$ for $k\geq 3$ and $(α+2.5ρ)$ for $k=2$, where $α$ is the performance ratio for the minimum weight $m$-fold dominating set problem and $ρ$ is the performance ratio for the subset $k$-connected subgraph problem (both problems are known to have constant performance ratios.)

Holographic rainbow networks for colorful Motzkin and Fredkin spin chains

We present bulk tensor networks that exactly represent the ground states of a continuous family of one-dimensional frustration-free Hamiltonians. These states, which are known as area-deformed Motzkin and Fredkin states, exhibit a novel quantum phase transition. By tuning a single parameter, they go from a phase obeying an area law to a highly entangled rainbow phase, where the half-chain entropy scales with the volume. Using the representation of these ground states as superpositions of random walks, we introduce tensor networks for these ground states where local and global rules of the walker are baked into bulk tensors, thereby providing an efficient description of the ground states (some of which satisfy a volume law scaling of entanglement entropy).

Approximation Algorithm for the Partial Set Multi-Cover Problem

Partial set cover problem and set multi-cover problem are two generalizations of set cover problem. In this paper, we consider the partial set multi-cover problem which is a combination of them: given an element set $E$, a collection of sets $\mathcal S\subseteq 2^E$, a total covering ratio $q$ which is a constant between 0 and 1, each set $S\in\mathcal S$ is associated with a cost $c_S$, each element $e\in E$ is associated with a covering requirement $r_e$, the goal is to find a minimum cost sub-collection $\mathcal S'\subseteq\mathcal S$ to fully cover at least $q|E|$ elements, where element $e$ is fully covered if it belongs to at least $r_e$ sets of $\mathcal S'$. Denote by $r_{\max}=\max\{r_e\colon e\in E\}$ the maximum covering requirement. We present an $(O(\frac{r_{\max}\log^2n}{\varepsilon}),1-\varepsilon)$-bicriteria approximation algorithm, that is, the output of our algorithm has cost at most $O(\frac{r_{\max}\log^2 n}{\varepsilon})$ times of the optimal value while the number of fully covered elements is at least $(1-\varepsilon)q|E|$.

FanStore: Enabling Efficient and Scalable I/O for Distributed Deep Learning

Emerging Deep Learning (DL) applications introduce heavy I/O workloads on computer clusters. The inherent long lasting, repeated, and random file access pattern can easily saturate the metadata and data service and negatively impact other users. In this paper, we present FanStore, a transient runtime file system that optimizes DL I/O on existing hardware/software stacks. FanStore distributes datasets to the local storage of compute nodes, and maintains a global namespace. With the techniques of system call interception, distributed metadata management, and generic data compression, FanStore provides a POSIX-compliant interface with native hardware throughput in an efficient and scalable manner. Users do not have to make intrusive code changes to use FanStore and take advantage of the optimized I/O. Our experiments with benchmarks and real applications show that FanStore can scale DL training to 512 compute nodes with over 90\% scaling efficiency.

Human activity recognition based on time series analysis using U-Net

Traditional human activity recognition (HAR) based on time series adopts sliding window analysis method. This method faces the multi-class window problem which mistakenly labels different classes of sampling points within a window as a class. In this paper, a HAR algorithm based on U-Net is proposed to perform activity labeling and prediction at each sampling point. The activity data of the triaxial accelerometer is mapped into an image with the single pixel column and multi-channel which is input into the U-Net network for training and recognition. Our proposal can complete the pixel-level gesture recognition function. The method does not need manual feature extraction and can effectively identify short-term behaviors in long-term activity sequences. We collected the Sanitation dataset and tested the proposed scheme with four open data sets. The experimental results show that compared with Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN), Decision Tree(DT), Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Fully Convolutional Networks (FCN) methods, our proposal has the highest accuracy and F1-socre in each dataset, and has stable performance and high robustness. At the same time, after the U-Net has finished training, our proposal can achieve fast enough recognition speed.

Game-Theoretic Design of Optimal Two-Sided Rating Protocols for Service Exchange Dilemma in Crowdsourcing

Despite the increasing popularity and successful examples of crowdsourcing, it is stripped of aureole when collective efforts are derailed or severely hindered by elaborate sabotage. A service exchange dilemma arises when non-cooperation among self-interested users, and zero social welfare is obtained at myopic equilibrium. Traditional rating protocols are not effective to overcome the inefficiency of the socially undesirable equilibrium due to specific features of crowdsourcing: a large number of anonymous users having asymmetric service requirements, different service capabilities, and dynamically joining/leaving a crowdsourcing platform with imperfect monitoring. In this paper, we develop the first game-theoretic design of the two-sided rating protocol to stimulate cooperation among self-interested users, which consists of a recommended strategy and a rating update rule. The recommended strategy recommends a desirable behavior from three predefined plans according to intrinsic parameters, while the rating update rule involves the update of ratings of both users, and uses differential punishments that punish users with different ratings differently. By quantifying necessary and sufficient conditions for a sustainable social norm, we formulate the problem of designing an optimal two-sided rating protocol that maximizes the social welfare among all sustainable protocols, provide design guidelines for optimal two-sided rating protocols and a low-complexity algorithm to select optimal design parameters in an alternate manner. Finally, evaluation results show the validity and effectiveness of our protocol designed for service exchange dilemma in crowdsourcing.

ImageNet Training in Minutes

Finishing 90-epoch ImageNet-1k training with ResNet-50 on a NVIDIA M40 GPU takes 14 days. This training requires 10^18 single precision operations in total. On the other hand, the world's current fastest supercomputer can finish 2 * 10^17 single precision operations per second (Dongarra et al 2017, https://www.top500.org/lists/2017/06/). If we can make full use of the supercomputer for DNN training, we should be able to finish the 90-epoch ResNet-50 training in one minute. However, the current bottleneck for fast DNN training is in the algorithm level. Specifically, the current batch size (e.g. 512) is too small to make efficient use of many processors. For large-scale DNN training, we focus on using large-batch data-parallelism synchronous SGD without losing accuracy in the fixed epochs. The LARS algorithm (You, Gitman, Ginsburg, 2017, arXiv:1708.03888) enables us to scale the batch size to extremely large case (e.g. 32K). We finish the 100-epoch ImageNet training with AlexNet in 11 minutes on 1024 CPUs. About three times faster than Facebook's result (Goyal et al 2017, arXiv:1706.02677), we finish the 90-epoch ImageNet training with ResNet-50 in 20 minutes on 2048 KNLs without losing accuracy. State-of-the-art ImageNet training speed with ResNet-50 is 74.9% top-1 test accuracy in 15 minutes. We got 74.9% top-1 test accuracy in 64 epochs, which only needs 14 minutes. Furthermore, when we increase the batch size to above 16K, our accuracy is much higher than Facebook's on corresponding batch sizes. Our source code is available upon request.

Rating Protocol Design for Extortion and Cooperation in the Crowdsourcing Contest Dilemma

Crowdsourcing has emerged as a paradigm for leveraging human intelligence and activity to solve a wide range of tasks. However, strategic workers will find enticement in their self-interest to free-ride and attack in a crowdsourcing contest dilemma game. Hence, incentive mechanisms are of great importance to overcome the inefficiency of the socially undesirable equilibrium. Existing incentive mechanisms are not effective in providing incentives for cooperation in crowdsourcing competitions due to the following features: heterogeneous workers compete against each other in a crowdsourcing platform with imperfect monitoring. In this paper, we take these features into consideration, and develop a novel game-theoretic design of rating protocols, which integrates binary rating labels with differential pricing to maximize the requester's utility, by extorting selfish workers and enforcing cooperation among them. By quantifying necessary and sufficient conditions for the sustainable social norm, we formulate the problem of maximizing the revenue of the requester among all sustainable rating protocols, provide design guidelines for optimal rating protocols, and design a low-complexity algorithm to select optimal design parameters which are related to differential punishments and pricing schemes. Simulation results demonstrate how intrinsic parameters impact on design parameters, as well as the performance gain of the proposed rating protocol.

Approximation Algorithm for Fault-Tolerant Virtual Backbone in Wireless Sensor Networks

To save energy and alleviate interferences in a wireless sensor network, the usage of virtual backbone was proposed. Because of accidental damages or energy depletion, it is desirable to construct a fault tolerant virtual backbone, which can be modeled as a $k$-connected $m$-fold dominating set (abbreviated as $(k,m)$-CDS) in a graph. A node set $C\subseteq V(G)$ is a $(k,m)$-CDS of graph $G$ if every node in $V(G)\backslash C$ is adjacent with at least $m$ nodes in $C$ and the subgraph of $G$ induced by $C$ is $k$-connected. In this paper, we present an approximation algorithm for the minimum $(3,m)$-CDS problem with $m\geq3$. The performance ratio is at most $γ$, where $γ=α+8+2\ln(2α-6)$ for $α\geq4$ and $γ=3α+2\ln2$ for $α<4$, and $α$ is the performance ratio for the minimum $(2,m)$-CDS problem. Using currently best known value of $α$, the performance ratio is $\lnδ+o(\lnδ)$, where $δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph, which is asymptotically best possible in view of the non-approximability of the problem. This is the first performance-guaranteed algorithm for the minimum $(3,m)$-CDS problem on a general graph. Furthermore, applying our algorithm on a unit disk graph which models a homogeneous wireless sensor network, the performance ratio is less than 27, improving previous ratio 62.3 by a large amount for the $(3,m)$-CDS problem on a unit disk graph.

Dual meson condensates in the Polyakov-loop extended linear sigma model

Dual meson condensates as possible order parameters for deconfinement are investigated in a Polyakov-loop enhanced linear sigma model of QCD at both zero and finite isospin chemical potential $μ_I$. We find that the rapid rise of the dual sigma condensate (corresponding to the dressed Polyakov-loop) with $T$ is driven by the chiral transition, no matter whether the Polyakov-loop dynamics is included or not. For $μ_I>m_π/2$, the dual sigma condensate shows abnormal thermal behavior which even decreases with $T$ below the melting temperature $T_c^{I_3}$ of pion superfluidity; On the other hand, even the dual pion condensate always increases with $T$, its maximum slope locates exactly at $T_c^{I_3}$ rather than the deconfinement temperature $T_c^{P}$ determined by the Polyakov-loop. All these are qualitatively consistent with the previous results obtained in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type models. The dual vector meson condensate for $μ_I>m_π/2$ is also calculated. This quantity is more sensitive to the chiral transition when taking into account the Dirac-sea contribution. Our study further suggests that it should be cautious to use dual observables to indicate the deconfinement transition, especially in QCD models.

Circumference of 3-connected cubic graphs

The circumference of a graph is the length of its longest cycles. Jackson established a conjecture of Bondy by showing that the circumference of a 3-connected cubic graph of order $n$ is $Ω(n^{0.694})$. Bilinski {\it et al.} improved this lower bound to $Ω(n^{0.753})$ by studying large Eulerian subgraphs in 3-edge-connected graphs. In this paper, we further improve this lower bound to $Ω(n^{0.8})$. This is done by considering certain 2-connected cubic graphs, finding cycles through two given edges, and distinguishing the cases whether or not these edges are adjacent.

Entropy, gap and a multi-parameter deformation of the Fredkin spin chain

We introduce a multi-parameter deformation of the Fredkin spin $1/2$ chain whose ground state is a weighted superposition of Dyck paths, depending on a set of parameters $t_i$ along the chain. The parameters are introduced in such a way to maintain the system frustration-free while allowing to explore a range of possible phases. In the case where the parameters are uniform, and a color degree of freedom is added we establish a phase diagram with a transition between an area law and a volume low. The volume entropy obtained for half a chain is $n \log s$ where $n$ is the half-chain length and $s$ is the number of colors. Next, we prove an upper bound on the spectral gap of the $t>1, s>1$ phase, scaling as $Δ=O((4s)^nt^{-n^2/2})$, similar to a recent a result about the deformed Motzkin model, albeit derived in a different way. Finally, using an additional variational argument we prove an exponential lower bound on the gap of the model for $t>1, s=1$, which provides an example of a system with bounded entanglement entropy and a vanishing spectral gap.

Approximation Algorithm for Minimum Weight Connected $m$-Fold Dominating Set

Using connected dominating set (CDS) to serve as a virtual backbone in a wireless networks can save energy and reduce interference. Since nodes may fail due to accidental damage or energy depletion, it is desirable that the virtual backbone has some fault-tolerance. A $k$-connected $m$-fold dominating set ($(k,m)$-CDS) of a graph $G$ is a node set $D$ such that every node in $V\setminus D$ has at least $m$ neighbors in $D$ and the subgraph of $G$ induced by $D$ is $k$-connected. Using $(k,m)$-CDS can tolerate the failure of $\min\{k-1,m-1\}$ nodes. In this paper, we study Minimum Weight $(1,m)$-CDS problem ($(1,m)$-MWCDS), and present an $(H(δ+m)+2H(δ-1))$-approximation algorithm, where $δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph and $H(\cdot)$ is the Harmonic number. Notice that there is a $1.35\ln n$-approximation algorithm for the $(1,1)$-MWCDS problem, where $n$ is the number of nodes in the graph. Though our constant in $O(\ln \cdot)$ is larger than 1.35, $n$ is replaced by $δ$. Such a replacement enables us to obtain a $(6.67+\varepsilon)$-approximation for the $(1,m)$-MWCDS problem on unit disk graphs.

Randomized Bicriteria Approximation Algorithm for Minimum Submodular Cost Partial Multi-Cover Problem

This paper studies randomized approximation algorithm for a variant of the set cover problem called minimum submodular cost partial multi-cover (SCPMC), in which each element $e$ has a covering requirement $r_e$ and a profit $p_e$, and the cost function on sub-collection of sets is submodular, the goal is to find a minimum cost sub-collection of sets which fully covers at least $q$-percentage of total profit, where an element $e$ is fully covered by sub-collection $S'$ if and only if it belongs to at least $r_e$ sets of $\mathcal S'$. Previous work shows that such a combination enormously increases the difficulty of studies, even when the cost function is linear. In this paper, assuming that the maximum covering requirement $r_{\max}=\max_e r_e$ is a constant and the cost function is nonnegative, monotone nondecreasing, and submodular, we give the first randomized bicriteria algorithm for SCPMC the output of which fully covers at least $(q-\varepsilon)$-percentage of all elements and the performance ratio is $O(b/\varepsilon)$ with a high probability, where $b=\max_e\binom{f}{r_{e}}$ and $f$ is the maximum number of sets containing a common element. The algorithm is based on a novel non-linear program. Furthermore, in the case when the covering requirement $r\equiv 1$, a bicriteria $O(f/\varepsilon)$-approximation can be achieved even when monotonicity requirement is dropped off from the cost function.

Deformed Fredkin Spin Chain with Extensive Entanglement

We introduce a new spin chain which is a deformation of the Fredkin spin chain and has a phase transition between bounded and extensive entanglement entropy scaling. In this chain, spins have a local interaction of three nearest neighbors. The Hamiltonian is frustration-free and its ground state can be described analytically as a weighted superposition of Dyck paths. In the purely spin $1/2$ case, the entanglement entropy obeys an area law: it is bounded from above by a constant, when the size of the block $n$ increases (and $t>1$). When a local color degree of freedom is introduced the entanglement entropy increases linearly with the size of the block (and $t>1$). The entanglement entropy of half of the chain is tightly bounded by ${ n}\log s$ where $n$ is the size of the block, and $s$ is the number of colors. Our chain fosters a new example for a significant boost to entropy and for the existence of the associated critical rainbow phase where the entanglement entropy scales with volume that has recently been discovered in Zhang et al. (arXiv:1606.07795)

Performance Guaranteed Approximation Algorithm for Minimum $k$-Connected $m$-Fold Dominating Set

To achieve an efficient routing in a wireless sensor network, connected dominating set (CDS) is used as virtual backbone. A fault-tolerant virtual backbone can be modeled as a $(k,m)$-CDS. For a connected graph $G=(V,E)$ and two fixed integers $k$ and $m$, a node set $C\subseteq V$ is a $(k,m)$-CDS of $G$ if every node in $V\setminus C$ has at least $m$ neighbors in $C$, and the subgraph of $G$ induced by $C$ is $k$-connected. Previous to this work, approximation algorithms with guaranteed performance ratio in a general graph were know only for $k\leq 3$. This paper makes a significant progress by presenting a $(2k-1)α_0$ approximation algorithm for general $k$ and $m$ with $m\geq k$, where $α_0$ is the performance ratio for the minimum CDS problem. Using currently best known ratio for $α_0$, our algorithm has performance ratio $O(\lnΔ)$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph.

A simple setup to measure muon lifetime and electron energy spectrum of muon decay and its Monte Carlo simulation

We designed a simple setup to measure the muon lifetime and the electron energy spectra of muon decay. A low cost coincidental circuit was designed to select the signals of muon decay events detected by a plastic scintillator detector. It triggered a digital oscilloscope to record the signals of muon decay events for measuring the muon lifetime and electron energy spectrum. A Landau-distribution energy loss method was introduced to conduct the energy calibration of the system. The experimental results were well reproduced by the Monte Carlo simulation. The software and hardware of the system are completely open to students, thus more helpful for instruction and motivation.

Quantum phase transition from bounded to extensive entanglement entropy in a frustration-free spin chain

We introduce a continuous family of frustration-free Hamiltonians with exactly solvable ground states. We prove that the {ground state of our model is non-degenerate and exhibits} a novel quantum phase transition from bounded entanglement entropy to a massively entangled state with volume entropy scaling. The ground state may be interpreted as a deformation away from the uniform superposition of colored Motzkin paths, showed by Movassagh and Shor to have a large (square-root) but sub-extensive scaling of entanglement into a state with an extensive entropy.
