Do Linear Dispersions of Classical Waves Mean Dirac Cones?

By using the \vec{k}\cdot\vec{p} method, we propose a first-principles theory to study the linear dispersions in phononic and photonic crystals. The theory reveals that only those linear dispersions created by doubly-degenerate states can be described by a reduced Hamiltonian that can be mapped into the Dirac Hamiltonian and possess a Berry phase of -π. Triply-degenerate states can also generate Dirac-like cone dispersions, but the wavefunctions transform like a spin-1 particle and the Berry phase is zero. Our theory is capable of predicting accurately the linear slopes of Dirac/Dirac-like cones at various symmetry points in a Brilliouin zone, independent of frequency and lattice structure.

Elastic metamaterials with simultaneously negative effective shear modulus and mass density

We propose a type of elastic metamaterial comprising fluid-solid composite inclusions which can possess negative shear modulus and negative mass density over a large frequency region. Such a solid metamaterial has a unique elastic property that only transverse waves can propagate with a negative dispersion while longitudinal waves are forbidden. This leads to many interesting phenomena such as negative refraction, which is demonstrated by using a wedge sample, and a significant amount of mode conversion from transverse waves to longitudinal waves that cannot occur on the interface of two natural solids.

Local diffusion theory of localized waves in open media

We report a first-principles study of static transport of localized waves in quasi-one-dimensional open media. We found that such transport, dominated by disorder-induced resonant transmissions, displays novel diffusive behavior. Our analytical predictions are entirely confirmed by numerical simulations. We showed that the prevailing self-consistent localization theory [van Tiggelen, {\it et. al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{84}, 4333 (2000)] is valid only if disorder-induced resonant transmissions are negligible. Our findings open a new direction in the study of Anderson localization in open media.

Dispersion Relations and Their Symmetry Properties for Electromagnetic and Elastic Metamaterials in Two Dimensions

In the framework of multiple-scattering theory, we show that the dispersion relations of certain electromagnetic (EM) and elastic metamaterials can be obtained analytically in the long-wavelength limit. Specific examples are given to the two-dimensional metamaterials with cylindrical inclusions arranged in square and triangular lattices. The role played by the lattice structure in determining whether a dispersion relation is isotropic or not is shown explicitly. Different lattice dependences between EM and elastic metamaterials are also shown. In the case of isotropic dispersions, our results coincide with those of isotropic effective medium theories obtained previously for EM and elastic metamaterials, respectively, and, therefore, provide a more fundamental support to those theories. In the case of elastic metamaterials with anisotropic dispersions, our analytical results can provide an anisotropic effective medium theory in the form of Christoffel's equation. In this case, the isotropic effective medium theory can describe accurately the angle-averaged dispersion relations. The properties of anisotropic dispersions are discussed and verified by numerical calculations of a realistic elastic metamaterial.

Negative Group Velocity from Quadrupole Resonance of Plasmonic Spheres

We study the dispersions of plasmonic bands that arise from the coupling of electric quadrupole resonances in three dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) consisting of plasmonic spheres. Through analytical derivation, we show that two branches of quadrupole bands in simple cubic PCs with a small lattice constant possess negative group velocities. Distinct from double negative media in which the negative responses originates from the coupling of electric and magnetic responses (P and M), the negative dispersion induced by quadrupole resonance is an intrinsic property of quadrupole that does not require coupling to another degree of freedom. In addition, there is no simple effective medium description. In plasmonic systems composed of metallic nanoparticle clusters, the coupled quadrupole resonance may be tuned to lower optical frequencies, and the coupling strength between this quadrupole resonance and external electromagnetic (EM) waves are in the same order of the magnetic dipole M.

A complementary media invisibility cloak that can cloak objects at a distance outside the cloaking shell

Based on the concept of complementary media, we propose an invisibility cloak operating at a finite frequency that can cloak an object with a pre-specified shape and size within a certain distance outside the shell. The cloak comprises of a dielectric core, and an "anti-object" embedded inside a negative index shell. The cloaked object is not blinded by the cloaking shell since it lies outside the cloak. Full-wave simulations in two dimensions have been performed to verify the cloaking effect.

Dirac Spectra and Edge States in Honeycomb Plasmonic Lattices

We study theoretically the dispersion of plasmonic honeycomb lattices and find Dirac spectra for both dipole and quadrupole modes. Zigzag edge states derived from Dirac points are found in ribbons of these honeycomb plasmonic lattices. The zigzag edge states for out-of-plane dipole modes are closely analogous to the electronic ones in graphene nanoribbons. The edge states for in-plane dipole modes and quadrupole modes, however, have rather unique characters due to the vector nature of the plasmonic excitations. The conditions for the existence of plasmonic edge states are derived analytically.

A Dynamical Effective Medium Theory for Elastic Metamaterials

We develop a dynamical effective medium theory to accurately predict the unusual properties of elastic metamaterials in two dimensions near the resonant frequencies. The theory shows that the effective bulk modulus, shear modulus, and mass density can be made negative by choosing proper resonant scatterers, leading to 8 possible types of wave propagation. The theory not only provides a convenient tool to search for various metamaterials with desired properties, but also gives a unified physical picture of these properties. Here we demonstrate two examples. One possesses large band gaps at low frequencies. The other exhibits two regions of negative refraction: one for both longitudinal and transverse waves and the other for longitudinal waves only.

Large Coherence Area Thin-Film Photonic Stop-Band Lasers

We demonstrate that the shift of the stop band position with increasing oblique angle in periodic structures results in a wide transverse exponential field distribution corresponding to strong angular confinement of the radiation. The beam expansion follows an effective diffusive equation depending only upon the spectral mode width. In the presence of gain, the beam cross section is limited only by the size of the gain area. As an example of an active periodic photonic medium, we calculate and measure laser emission from a dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal film.
