Two-timescale Beamforming Optimization for Downlink Multi-user Holographic MIMO Surfaces

Benefiting from the rapid development of metamaterials and metasurfaces, the holographic multiple-input and multiple-output surface (HMIMOS) has been regarded as a promising solution for future wireless networks recently. By densely packing numerous radiation elements together, HMIMOS is capable of realizing accurate beamforming with low hardware complexity. However, enormous radiation elements on the HMIMOS lead to high computational complexity and signaling overhead when applying traditional beamforming schemes relying on instantaneous channel state information (CSI). To tackle this problem, we propose a two-timescale optimization scheme to minimize the required transmission power under the constraint of all users' quality-of-service (QoS). Specifically, the beampatterns at the base station (BS) and the user equippment (UE) are optimized over the slowly changing statistical CSI based on the constrained stochastic successive convex approximation (CSSCA) algorithm. Then, the instantaneous CSI is utilized to design the precoding matrix in order to ensure the system performance without significant increase in computational cost, due to the small number of feeds on the HMIMOS. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method compared to other baselines.

Calibration-free Rydberg Atomic Receiver for Sub-MHz Wireless Communications and Sensing

The exploitation of sub-MHz (\textless 1 MHz) can be beneficial for a plethora of applications like underwater vehicular communication, subsurface exploration, low-frequency navigation etc. The traditional electrical receivers in this band are either hundreds of meters long or, when miniaturized, inefficient and bandwidth-limited, making them inapplicable for practical underwater implementations. Such obstacles can be circumvented by the emerging Rydberg atomic receiving technology, which is capable of detecting fields from DC up to the terahertz regime with compact structure. Against this background, we propose a method to detect sub-MHz electric fields without further calibration. Specifically, a physics-based model of the combined DC and AC-Stark response is established. Based on the model, we modulate the DC-Stark spectrum with the received signal and extract its amplitude by fitting the cycle-averaged, symmetric Stark-split peaks. Then we map this swing directly to the intrinsic atomic polarizability. By such operations, the proposed method can remove the dependence on electrode spacing or field-amplitude references. For performance evaluation, six-level Lindblad simulations and experiments are conducted at a low-frequency field of 30 kHz demonstrate a minimum detectable field of 5.3 \text{mV}/\text{cm}, with stable readout across practical optical-power variations. The approach manages to expand operating range of Rydberg atomic receivers below 1 MHz, and enables compact, calibration-free quantum front ends for underwater and subsurface receivers.

Jamming Identification with Differential Transformer for Low-Altitude Wireless Networks

Wireless jamming identification, which detects and classifies electromagnetic jamming from non-cooperative devices, is crucial for emerging low-altitude wireless networks consisting of many drone terminals that are highly susceptible to electromagnetic jamming. However, jamming identification schemes adopting deep learning (DL) are vulnerable to attacks involving carefully crafted adversarial samples, resulting in inevitable robustness degradation. To address this issue, we propose a differential transformer framework for wireless jamming identification. Firstly, we introduce a differential transformer network in order to distinguish jamming signals, which overcomes the attention noise when compared with its traditional counterpart by performing self-attention operations in a differential manner. Secondly, we propose a randomized masking training strategy to improve network robustness, which leverages the patch partitioning mechanism inherent to transformer architectures in order to create parallel feature extraction branches. Each branch operates on a distinct, randomly masked subset of patches, which fundamentally constrains the propagation of adversarial perturbations across the network. Additionally, the ensemble effect generated by fusing predictions from these diverse branches demonstrates superior resilience against adversarial attacks. Finally, we introduce a novel consistent training framework that significantly enhances adversarial robustness through dualbranch regularization. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed methodology is superior to existing methods in boosting robustness to adversarial samples.

AFDM-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communication: Theoretical Framework and Pilot Design

The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as one representative usage scenario of sixth-generation (6G) network. However, the unprecedented characteristics of 6G, especially the doubly dispersive channel, make classical ISAC waveforms rather challenging to guarantee a desirable performance level. The recently proposed affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) can attain full diversity even under doubly dispersive effects, thus becoming a competitive candidate for next-generation ISAC waveforms. Relevant investigations are still at an early stage, which involve only straightforward design lacking explicit theoretical analysis. This paper provides an in-depth investigation on AFDM waveform design for ISAC applications. Specifically, the closed-form Crámer-Rao bounds of target detection for AFDM are derived, followed by a demonstration on its merits over existing counterparts. Furthermore, we formulate the ambiguity function of the pilot-assisted AFDM waveform for the first time, revealing conditions for stable sensing performance. To further enhance both the communication and sensing performance of the AFDM waveform, we propose a novel pilot design by exploiting the characteristics of AFDM signals. The proposed design is analytically validated to be capable of optimizing the ambiguity function property and channel estimation accuracy simultaneously as well as overcoming the sensing and channel estimation range limitation originated from the pilot spacing. Numerical results have verified the superiority of the proposed pilot design in terms of dual-functional performance.

Near-Field ISAC for THz Wireless Systems

Sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks are expected not only to provide high-speed connectivity but also to support reliable sensing capabilities, giving rise to the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) paradigm. To enable higher data rates and more accurate sensing, terahertz (THz) systems empowered by extremely large multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) technology are envisioned as key enablers for future ISAC systems. Owing to the substantial increase in both effective array aperture and carrier frequency, a considerable portion of future ISAC applications is anticipated to fall within the near-field coverage region, instead of the conventional far-field. However, most existing ISAC techniques are designed under the far-field planar wave assumption, struggling to accommodate the unique characteristics of THz near-field propagation. To motivate future research into near-field ISAC research, we systematically investigate the characteristics of THz near-field propagation and explore its potential to facilitate ISAC systems. Specifically, we analyze three fundamental characteristics of THz near-field propagation and review state-of-the-art techniques that exploit these features to boost both communication and sensing performance. To further harness the angular-range coupling effect, we zoom into a particularly interesting approach to near-field sensing based on wavenumber domain. Besides, to exploit the beam squint effect, an ISAC resource allocation framework is introduced to support integrated multi-angle sensing and multi-user communication. Finally, we outline promising directions for future research in this emerging area.

Generalizable Learning for Frequency-Domain Channel Extrapolation under Distribution Shift

Frequency-domain channel extrapolation is effective in reducing pilot overhead for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Recently, Deep learning (DL) based channel extrapolator has become a promising candidate for modeling complex frequency-domain dependency. Nevertheless, current DL extrapolators fail to operate in unseen environments under distribution shift, which poses challenges for large-scale deployment. In this paper, environment generalizable learning for channel extrapolation is achieved by realizing distribution alignment from a physics perspective. Firstly, the distribution shift of wireless channels is rigorously analyzed, which comprises the distribution shift of multipath structure and single-path response. Secondly, a physics-based progressive distribution alignment strategy is proposed to address the distribution shift, which includes successive path-oriented design and path alignment. Path-oriented DL extrapolator decomposes multipath channel extrapolation into parallel extrapolations of the extracted path, which can mitigate the distribution shift of multipath structure. Path alignment is proposed to address the distribution shift of single-path response in path-oriented DL extrapolators, which eventually enables generalizable learning for channel extrapolation. In the simulation, distinct wireless environments are generated using the precise ray-tracing tool. Based on extensive evaluations, the proposed path-oriented DL extrapolator with path alignment can reduce extrapolation error by more than 6 dB in unseen environments compared to the state-of-the-arts.

Pre-Chirp-Domain Index Modulation for Full-Diversity Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing towards 6G

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM), tailored as a superior multicarrier technique utilizing chirp signals for high-mobility communications, is envisioned as a promising candidate for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless network. AFDM is based on the discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT) with two adjustable parameters of the chirp signals, termed as the pre-chirp and post-chirp parameters, respectively. We show that the pre-chirp counterpart can be flexibly manipulated for additional degree-of-freedom (DoF). Therefore, this paper proposes a novel AFDM scheme with the pre-chirp index modulation (PIM) philosophy (AFDM-PIM), which can implicitly convey extra information bits through dynamic pre-chirp parameter assignment, thus enhancing both spectral and energy efficiency. Specifically, we first demonstrate that the subcarrier orthogonality is still maintained by applying distinct pre-chirp parameters to various subcarriers in the AFDM modulation process. Inspired by this property, each AFDM subcarrier is constituted with a unique pre-chirp signal according to the incoming bits. By such arrangement, extra binary bits can be embedded into the index patterns of pre-chirp parameter assignment without additional energy consumption. For performance analysis, we derive the asymptotically tight upper bounds on the average bit error rates (BERs) of the proposed schemes with maximum-likelihood (ML) detection, and validate that the proposed AFDM-PIM can achieve the optimal diversity order under doubly dispersive channels. Based on the derivations, we further propose an optimal pre-chirp alphabet design to enhance the BER performance via intelligent optimization algorithms. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed AFDM-PIM outperforms the classical benchmarks under doubly dispersive channel.

New Paradigm for Unified Near-Field and Far-Field Wireless Communications

Current Type I and Type II codebooks in fifth generation (5G) wireless communications are limited in supporting the coexistence of far-field and near-field user equipments, as they are exclusively designed for far-field scenarios. To fill this knowledge gap and encourage relevant proposals by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), this article provides a novel codebook to facilitate a unified paradigm for the coexistence of far-field and near-field contexts. It ensures efficient precoding for all user equipments (UEs), while removing the need for the base station to identify whether one specific UE stays in either near-field or far-field regions. Additionally, our proposed codebook ensures compliance with current 3GPP standards for working flow and reference signals. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance and versatility of our proposed codebook, validating its effectiveness in unifying near-field and far-field precoding for sixth-generation (6G) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems.

Near-Field Communications with Block-Dominant Compressed Sensing: Fundamentals, Approaches, and Future Directions

In the context of extremely large-scale antenna arrays deployed in sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks, near-field (NF) communications have gained considerable attention. Unlike the planar waves formulated in the far-field, electromagnetic radiation propagates as spherical waves in the NF. This alteration affects the NF channel characteristics, particularly resulting in weak sparsity in angular-domain NF channels, which poses tricky challenges to the application of compressed sensing (CS). Motivated by these facts, the block-dominant compressed sensing (BD-CS) techniques are proposed to assist NF communications. This article starts with the introduction on why block sparsity exists in the distance-limited NF region. Then, block-dominant side-information (BD-SI) is exploited to facilitate the actual NF communication implementation. While BD-CS shows promise in providing exceptional channel estimation accuracy and high spectral efficiency, several key challenges, opportunities, and practical implementation issues in NF communications need careful consideration.

Transmit Beamforming Design for ISAC with Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces

This paper proposes a transmit beamforming strategy for the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems enabled by the novel stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM) architecture, where the base station (BS) simultaneously performs downlink communication and radar target detection via different beams. To ensure superior dual-function performance simultaneously, we design the multi-layer cascading beamformer by maximizing the sum rate of the users while optimally shaping the normalized beam pattern for detection. A dual-normalized differential gradient descent (D3) algorithm is further proposed to solve the resulting non-convex multi-objective problem (MOP), where gradient differences and dual normalization are employed to ensure a fair trade-off between communication and sensing objectives. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed beamforming design in terms of balancing communication and sensing performance.

MIMO Precoding Exploiting Extra Degrees of Freedom (DoF) in the Wavenumber Domain

In this paper, we propose an emerging wavenumber-domain precoding scheme to break the limitations of rank-1 channels that merely supports single-stream transmission, enabling simultaneous transmission of multiple data streams. The proposed wavenumber-domain precoding scheme also breaks the Rayleigh distance demarcation, regardless of the far-field and near-field contexts. Specifically, by characterizing the channel response as the superposition of a series of Fourier harmonics specified by different wavenumbers, the degree of freedom (DoF) is dependent on the cardinality of the wavenumber support, based on which the extra DoF is presented. This representation is applicable for both far-field and near-field. Different wavenumber atoms, determined within this support, constitute the codebook for MIMO precoding, in which each atom allows for the transmission of a data stream. Then, to maximize the capacity, it is required to select the wavenumbers associated with the optimal transmission direction, and optimize its power allocation. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate the significant superiority in comparison to the conventional spatial division schemes, with the potential of approaching the theoretical performance upper bound achieved by singular value decomposition (SVD).

Wavenumber-Domain Near-Field Channel Estimation: Beyond the Fresnel Bound

In the near-field context, the Fresnel approximation is typically employed to mathematically represent solvable functions of spherical waves. However, these efforts may fail to take into account the significant increase in the lower limit of the Fresnel approximation, known as the Fresnel distance. The lower bound of the Fresnel approximation imposes a constraint that becomes more pronounced as the array size grows. Beyond this constraint, the validity of the Fresnel approximation is broken. As a potential solution, the wavenumber-domain paradigm characterizes the spherical wave using a spectrum composed of a series of linear orthogonal bases. However, this approach falls short of covering the effects of the array geometry, especially when using Gaussian-mixed-model (GMM)-based von Mises-Fisher distributions to approximate all spectra. To fill this gap, this paper introduces a novel wavenumber-domain ellipse fitting (WDEF) method to tackle these challenges. Particularly, the channel is accurately estimated in the near-field region, by maximizing the closed-form likelihood function of the wavenumber-domain spectrum conditioned on the scatterers' geometric parameters. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed scheme against both the distance and angles of arrival.

Near-Field Channel Estimation in Dual-Band XL-MIMO with Side Information-Assisted Compressed Sensing

Near-field communication comes to be an indispensable part of the future sixth generation (6G) communications at the arrival of the forth-coming deployment of extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems. Due to the huge array aperture and high-frequency bands, the electromagnetic radiation field is modeled by the spherical waves instead of the conventional planar waves, leading to severe weak sparsity to angular-domain near-field channel. Therefore, the channel estimation reminiscent of the conventional compression sensing (CS) approaches in the angular domain, judiciously utilized for low pilot overhead, may result in unprecedented challenges. To this end, this paper proposes a brand-new near-field channel estimation scheme by exploiting the naturally occurring useful side information. Specifically, we formulate the dual-band near-field communication model based on the fact that high-frequency systems are likely to be deployed with lower-frequency systems. Representative side information, i.e., the structural characteristic information derived by the sparsity ambiguity and the out-of-band spatial information stemming from the lower-frequency channel, is explored and tailored to materialize exceptional near-field channel estimation. Furthermore, in-depth theoretical analyses are developed to guarantee the minimum estimation error, based on which a suite of algorithms leveraging the elaborating side information are proposed. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the designed algorithms provide more assured results than the off-the-shelf approaches in the context of the dual-band near-field communications in both on- and off-grid scenarios, where the angle of departures/arrivals are discretely or continuously distributed, respectively.

Block-Sparse Tensor Recovery

This work explores the fundamental problem of the recoverability of a sparse tensor being reconstructed from its compressed embodiment. We present a generalized model of block-sparse tensor recovery as a theoretical foundation, where concepts measuring holistic mutual incoherence property (MIP) of the measurement matrix set are defined. A representative algorithm based on the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) framework, called tensor generalized block OMP (T-GBOMP), is applied to the theoretical framework elaborated for analyzing both noiseless and noisy recovery conditions. Specifically, we present the exact recovery condition (ERC) and sufficient conditions for establishing it with consideration of different degrees of restriction. Reliable reconstruction conditions, in terms of the residual convergence, the estimated error and the signal-to-noise ratio bound, are established to reveal the computable theoretical interpretability based on the newly defined MIP, which we introduce. The flexibility of tensor recovery is highlighted, i.e., the reliable recovery can be guaranteed by optimizing MIP of the measurement matrix set. Analytical comparisons demonstrate that the theoretical results developed are tighter and less restrictive than the existing ones (if any). Further discussions provide tensor extensions for several classic greedy algorithms, indicating that the sophisticated results derived are universal and applicable to all these tensorized variants.

Unified Far-Field and Near-Field in Holographic MIMO: A Wavenumber-Domain Perspective

This article conceives a unified representation for near-field and far-field holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) channels, addressing a practical design dilemma: "Why does the angular-domain representation no longer function effectively?" To answer this question, we pivot from the angular domain to the wavenumber domain and present a succinct overview of its underlying philosophy. In re-examining the Fourier plane-wave series expansion that recasts spherical propagation waves into a series of plane waves represented by Fourier harmonics, we characterize the HMIMO channel employing these Fourier harmonics having different wavenumbers. This approach, referred to as the wavenumebr-domain representation, facilitates a unified view across the far-field and the near-field. Furthermore, the limitations of the DFT basis are demonstrated when identifying the sparsity inherent to the HMIMO channel, motivating the development of a wavenumber-domain basis as an alternative. We then present some preliminary applications of the proposed wavenumber-domain basis in signal processing across both the far-field and near-field, along with several prospects for future HMIMO system designs based on the wavenumber domain.

Deep Joint Semantic Coding and Beamforming for Near-Space Airship-Borne Massive MIMO Network

Near-space airship-borne communication network is recognized to be an indispensable component of the future integrated ground-air-space network thanks to airships' advantage of long-term residency at stratospheric altitudes, but it urgently needs reliable and efficient Airship-to-X link. To improve the transmission efficiency and capacity, this paper proposes to integrate semantic communication with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology. Specifically, we propose a deep joint semantic coding and beamforming (JSCBF) scheme for airship-based massive MIMO image transmission network in space, in which semantics from both source and channel are fused to jointly design the semantic coding and physical layer beamforming. First, we design two semantic extraction networks to extract semantics from image source and channel state information, respectively. Then, we propose a semantic fusion network that can fuse these semantics into complex-valued semantic features for subsequent physical-layer transmission. To efficiently transmit the fused semantic features at the physical layer, we then propose the hybrid data and model-driven semantic-aware beamforming networks. At the receiver, a semantic decoding network is designed to reconstruct the transmitted images. Finally, we perform end-to-end deep learning to jointly train all the modules, using the image reconstruction quality at the receivers as a metric. The proposed deep JSCBF scheme fully combines the efficient source compressibility and robust error correction capability of semantic communication with the high spectral efficiency of massive MIMO, achieving a significant performance improvement over existing approaches.

Holographic MIMO Systems, Their Channel Estimation and Performance

Holographic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems constitute a promising technology in support of next-generation wireless communications, thus paving the way for a smart programmable radio environment. However, despite its significant potential, further fundamental issues remain to be addressed, such as the acquisition of accurate channel information. Indeed, the conventional angular-domain channel representation is no longer adequate for characterizing the sparsity inherent in holographic MIMO channels. To fill this knowledge gap, in this article, we conceive a decomposition and reconstruction (DeRe)-based framework for facilitating the estimation of sparse channels in holographic MIMOs. In particular, the channel parameters involved in the steering vector, namely the azimuth and elevation angles plus the distance (AED), are decomposed for independently constructing their own covariance matrices. Then, the acquisition of each parameter can be formulated as a compressive sensing (CS) problem by harnessing the covariance matrix associated with each individual parameter. We demonstrate that our solution exhibits an improved performance and imposes a reduced pilot overhead, despite its reduced complexity. Finally, promising open research topics are highlighted to bridge the gap between the theory and the practical employment of holographic MIMO schemes.
