Energy Circuit-based Integrated Energy Management System: Theory, Implementation, and Application

Integrated energy systems (IESs), in which various energy flows are interconnected and coordinated to release potential flexibility for more efficient and secure operation, have drawn increasing attention in recent years. In this article, an integrated energy management system (IEMS) that performs online analysis and optimization on coupling energy flows in an IES is comprehensively introduced. From the theory perspective, an energy circuit method (ECM) that models natural gas networks and heating networks in the frequency domain is discussed. This method extends the electric circuit modeling of power systems to IESs and enables the IEMS to manage large-scale IESs. From the implementation perspective, the architecture design and function development of the IEMS are presented. Tutorial examples with illustrative case studies are provided to demonstrate its functions of dynamic state estimation, energy flow analysis, security assessment and control, and optimal energy flow. From the application perspective, real-world engineering demonstrations that apply IEMSs in managing building-scale, park-scale, and city-scale IESs are reported. The economic and environmental benefits obtained in these demonstration projects indicate that the IEMS has broad application prospects for a low/zero-carbon future energy system.

Reconfiguration of District Heating Network for Operational Flexibility Enhancement in Power System Unit Commitment

Massive adoptions of combined heat and power (CHP) units necessitate the coordinated operation of power system and district heating system (DHS). Exploiting the reconfigurable property of district heating networks (DHNs) provides a cost-effective solution to enhance the flexibility of the power system by redistributing heat loads in DHS. In this paper, a unit commitment considering combined electricity and reconfigurable heating network (UC-CERHN) is proposed to coordinate the day-ahead scheduling of power system and DHS. The DHS is formulated as a nonlinear and mixed-integer model with considering the reconfigurable DHN. Also, an auxiliary energy flow variable is introduced in the formed DHS model to make the commitment problem tractable, where the computational burdens are significantly reduced. Extensive case studies are presented to validate the effectiveness of the approximated model and illustrate the potential benefits of the proposed method with respect to congestion management and wind power accommodation. A Water Mass Method and Its Application to Integrated Heat and Electricity Dispatch Considering Thermal Dynamics

Currently, most district heating networks are running in a heat-setting mode, limiting the adjustment of the electrical power of combined heat and power (CHP) units. By considering the electrical power system (EPS) and district heating system (DHS) together, the peak regulatory capability of CHP units can be improved and renewable energy accommodation can be promoted. In this paper, a tractable integrated heat and electricity dispatch (IHED) model is described that addresses the thermal dynamic characteristics of pipelines and buildings to increase flexibility. To deal with the complexity of the optimization model, a water mass method (WMM) for pipeline thermal dynamics is proposed. Benefiting from the WMM, the proposed IHED model is an ordinary, non-linear model. An iterative algorithm based on the generalized Benders decomposition, and a sequential approach combined with the iterative algorithm and IPOPT, are proposed to solve the IHED model. Compared with a steady state model without thermal dynamics, considering the thermal dynamic characteristics in the DHS can further expand the peak regulatory capabilities of CHP units. The WMM is tested in the thermal dynamic simulations compared to an existing node method and a commercial simulation software. And the proposed solution strategy is verified in a small-scale system and a practical system. The simulation results of case studies are discussed to demonstrate the feasibility and economy of the dispatch model proposed here.
