Bridging Probabilistic LLMs and Deterministic Statistical Validation: The PROVE Multi-Agent Framework for Clinical Trial Reporting

Ensuring the accuracy and consistency of clinical trial Tables, Figures, and Listings (TFLs) remains a major challenge in regulatory reporting. Independent programming and manual review are essential quality-control practices, but cross-output verification still depends heavily on reviewer inspection and may miss structural, logical, or arithmetic discrepancies. Large language models (LLMs) can help interpret varied table language and navigate lengthy study documents, but they are not reliable substitutes for programmed statistical checks. We introduce PROVE (Programmatic Reporting and Output Verification Engine), an auditable framework that uses optional LLM and retrieval support for table interpretation while reserving numerical and logical decisions for programmed validators. PROVE links findings to source evidence, supports cross-output consistency checks, and allows LLM use to be enabled or disabled based on study requirements. We evaluated PROVE using ten replicated synthetic oncology reporting packages generated from raw data through SDTM, ADaM, and TFL outputs, with paired clean and discrepancy-injected packages; each replicate included 15 randomly injected discrepancies. We examined two table-label settings: exact labels matching the validator vocabulary and labels with similar clinical meaning but different wording. Within the implemented rule classes, all automated PROVE variants achieved perfect classification in the exact-label setting. In the label-variation setting, LLM-assisted semantic matching improved overall recall from 0.588 to 0.993 and overall F1 from 0.735 to 0.996 compared with exact-match, fuzzy lexical, and embedding-similarity variants. These findings suggest that LLMs are most useful for interpreting real-world variation in TFL wording and formatting, while executable checks should remain responsible for final numerical validation.

Joint RIS-UE Association and Beamforming Design in RIS-Assisted Cell-Free MIMO Network

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted cell-free (CF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks can significantly enhance system performance. However, the extensive deployment of RIS elements imposes considerable channel acquisition overhead, with the high density of nodes and antennas in RIS-assisted CF networks amplifying this challenge. To tackle this issue, in this paper, we explore integrating RIS-user equipment (UE) association into downlink RIS-assisted CF transmitter design, which greatly reduces the channel acquisition costs. The key point is that once UEs are associated with specific RISs, there is no need to frequently acquire channels from non-associated RISs. Then, we formulate the problem of joint RIS-UE association and beamforming at APs and RISs to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR). In particular, we propose a two-stage framework to solve it. In the first stage, we apply a many-to-many matching algorithm to establish the RIS-UE association. In the second stage, we introduce a sequential optimization-based method that decomposes the joint optimization of RIS phase shifts and AP beamforming into two distinct subproblems. To optimize the RIS phase shifts, we employ the majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm to obtain a semi-closed-form solution. For AP beamforming, we develop a joint block diagonalization algorithm, which yields a closed-form solution. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and show that, while RIS-UE association significantly reduces overhead, it incurs a minor performance loss that remains within an acceptable range. Additionally, we investigate the impact of RIS deployment and conclude that RISs exhibit enhanced performance when positioned between APs and UEs.

Revealing the evanescent components in Kronecker-product based codebooks: insights and implications

The orthogonal bases of discrete Fourier transform (DFT) has been recognized as the standard spatial-domain bases for Type I, Type II and enhanced Type II codewords by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). For uniform planar arrays, these spatial-domain bases are derived as the Kronecker product of one-dimensional DFT bases. Theoretically, each spatial basis corresponds to a beam directed towards a specific angle of departure and the set of bases represent the orthogonal beams that cover the front hemisphere of an array. While the Kronecker-product based precoding scheme facilitates the concise indexing of a codeword in the codebooks through precoding matrix indicators (PMIs) in channel state information feedback, it introduces redundant spatial beams characterized by high spatial-frequency components. This paper investigates the presence of codewords representing high spatial-frequency components within the Kronecker-product based codebooks. Through theoretical analysis and simulations, we confirm the redundancy of these codewords in MIMO communications, advocating for their removal from the codebooks to enhance system performance. Several topics relevant to the high spatial components are also involved in the discussion. Practical suggestions regarding future standard design are provided based on our theoretical analysis and simulation results.

A Bayesian Hybrid Design with Borrowing from Historical Study

In early phase drug development of combination therapy, the primary objective is to preliminarily assess whether there is additive activity from a novel agent when combined with an established monotherapy. Due to potential feasibility issues for conducting a large randomized study, uncontrolled single-arm trials have been the mainstream approach in cancer clinical trials. However, such trials often present significant challenges in deciding whether to proceed to the next phase of development due to the lack of randomization in traditional two-arm trials. A hybrid design, leveraging data from a completed historical clinical study of the monotherapy, offers a valuable option to enhance study efficiency and improve informed decision-making. Compared to traditional single-arm designs, the hybrid design may significantly enhance power by borrowing external information, enabling a more robust assessment of activity. The primary challenge of hybrid design lies in handling information borrowing. We introduce a Bayesian dynamic power prior (DPP) framework with three components of controlling amount of dynamic borrowing. The framework offers flexible study design options with explicit interpretation of borrowing, allowing customization according to specific needs. Furthermore, the posterior distribution in the proposed framework has a closed form, offering significant advantages in computational efficiency. The proposed framework's utility is demonstrated through simulations and a case study.

Entropy-based Probing Beam Selection and Beam Prediction via Deep Learning

Hierarchical beam search in mmWave communications incurs substantial training overhead, necessitating deep learning-enabled beam predictions to effectively leverage channel priors and mitigate this overhead. In this study, we introduce a comprehensive probabilistic model of power distribution in beamspace, and formulate the joint optimization problem of probing beam selection and probabilistic beam prediction as an entropy minimization problem. Then, we propose a greedy scheme to iteratively and alternately solve this problem, where a transformer-based beam predictor is trained to estimate the conditional power distribution based on the probing beams and user location within each iteration, and the trained predictor selects an unmeasured beam that minimizes the entropy of remaining beams. To further reduce the number of interactions and the computational complexity of the iterative scheme, we propose a two-stage probing beam selection scheme. Firstly, probing beams are selected from a location-specific codebook designed by an entropy-based criterion, and predictions are made with corresponding feedback. Secondly, the optimal beam is identified using additional probing beams with the highest predicted power values. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed schemes compared to hierarchical beam search and beam prediction with uniform probing beams.

Evaluating Dynamic Conditional Quantile Treatment Effects with Applications in Ridesharing

Many modern tech companies, such as Google, Uber, and Didi, utilize online experiments (also known as A/B testing) to evaluate new policies against existing ones. While most studies concentrate on average treatment effects, situations with skewed and heavy-tailed outcome distributions may benefit from alternative criteria, such as quantiles. However, assessing dynamic quantile treatment effects (QTE) remains a challenge, particularly when dealing with data from ride-sourcing platforms that involve sequential decision-making across time and space. In this paper, we establish a formal framework to calculate QTE conditional on characteristics independent of the treatment. Under specific model assumptions, we demonstrate that the dynamic conditional QTE (CQTE) equals the sum of individual CQTEs across time, even though the conditional quantile of cumulative rewards may not necessarily equate to the sum of conditional quantiles of individual rewards. This crucial insight significantly streamlines the estimation and inference processes for our target causal estimand. We then introduce two varying coefficient decision process (VCDP) models and devise an innovative method to test the dynamic CQTE. Moreover, we expand our approach to accommodate data from spatiotemporal dependent experiments and examine both conditional quantile direct and indirect effects. To showcase the practical utility of our method, we apply it to three real-world datasets from a ride-sourcing platform. Theoretical findings and comprehensive simulation studies further substantiate our proposal.

Secure Communication for Spatially Correlated RIS-Aided Multiuser Massive MIMO Systems: Analysis and Optimization

This letter investigates the secure communication in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system exploiting artificial noise (AN). We first derive a closed-form expression of the ergodic secrecy rate under spatially correlated MIMO channels. By using this derived result, we further optimize the power fraction of AN in closed form and the RIS phase shifts by developing a gradient-based algorithm, which requires only statistical channel state information (CSI). Our analysis shows that spatial correlation at the RIS provides an additional dimension for optimizing the RIS phase shifts. Numerical simulations validate the analytical results which show the insightful interplay among the system parameters and the degradation of secrecy performance due to high spatial correlation at the RIS.

Learnable Model-Driven Performance Prediction and Optimization for Imperfect MIMO System: Framework and Application

State-of-the-art schemes for performance analysis and optimization of multiple-input multiple-output systems generally experience degradation or even become invalid in dynamic complex scenarios with unknown interference and channel state information (CSI) uncertainty. To adapt to the challenging settings and better accomplish these network auto-tuning tasks, we propose a generic learnable model-driven framework in this paper. To explain how the proposed framework works, we consider regularized zero-forcing precoding as a usage instance and design a light-weight neural network for refined prediction of sum rate and detection error based on coarse model-driven approximations. Then, we estimate the CSI uncertainty on the learned predictor in an iterative manner and, on this basis, optimize the transmit regularization term and subsequent receive power scaling factors. A deep unfolded projected gradient descent based algorithm is proposed for power scaling, which achieves favorable trade-off between convergence rate and robustness.

Learning-Aided Beam Prediction in mmWave MU-MIMO Systems for High-Speed Railway

The problem of beam alignment and tracking in high mobility scenarios such as high-speed railway (HSR) becomes extremely challenging, since large overhead cost and significant time delay are introduced for fast time-varying channel estimation. To tackle this challenge, we propose a learning-aided beam prediction scheme for HSR networks, which predicts the beam directions and the channel amplitudes within a period of future time with fine time granularity, using a group of observations. Concretely, we transform the problem of high-dimensional beam prediction into a two-stage task, i.e., a low-dimensional parameter estimation and a cascaded hybrid beamforming operation. In the first stage, the location and speed of a certain terminal are estimated by maximum likelihood criterion, and a data-driven data fusion module is designed to improve the final estimation accuracy and robustness. Then, the probable future beam directions and channel amplitudes are predicted, based on the HSR scenario priors including deterministic trajectory, motion model, and channel model. Furthermore, we incorporate a learnable non-linear mapping module into the overall beam prediction to allow non-linear tracks. Both of the proposed learnable modules are model-based and have a good interpretability. Compared to the existing beam management scheme, the proposed beam prediction has (near) zero overhead cost and time delay. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Channel Estimation for Wideband MmWave MIMO OFDM System Exploiting Block Sparsity

In this letter, we investigate time-domain channel estimation for wideband millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO OFDM system. By transmitting frequency-domain pilot symbols as well as different beamforming vectors, we observe that the time-domain mmWave MIMO channels exhibit channel delay sparsity and especially block sparsity among different spatial directions. Then we propose a time-domain channel estimation exploiting block sparsity (TDCEBS) scheme, which always aims at finding the best nonzero block achieving the largest projection of the residue at each iterations. In particular, we evaluate the system performance using the QuaDRiGa which is recommended by 5G New Radio to generate wideband mmWave MIMO channels. The effectiveness of the proposed TDCEBS scheme is verified by the simulation results, as the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes.

Millimeter Wave Communications With Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface: Performance Analysis and Optimization

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) can create favorable multipath to establish strong links that are useful in millimeter wave (mmWave) communications. While previous works used Rayleigh or Rician fading, we use the fluctuating two-ray (FTR) distribution to model the small-scale fading in mmWave frequency. First, we obtain the statistical characterizations of the product of independent FTR random variables (RVs) and the sum of product of FTR RVs. For the RIS-aided and amplify-and-forward (AF) relay systems, we derive exact end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) expressions. To maximize the end-to-end SNR, we propose a novel and simple way to obtain the optimal phase shifts at the RIS elements. The optimal power allocation scheme for the AF relay system is also proposed. Furthermore, we evaluate important performance metrics including the outage probability and the average bit error probability. To validate the accuracy of our analytical results, Monte-Carlo simulations are subsequently conducted to provide interesting insights. It is found that the RIS-aided system can achieve the same performance as the AF relay system with low transmit power. More interestingly, as the channel conditions improve, the RIS-aided system can outperform the AF relay system having the same transmit power with a smaller number of reflecting elements.

Super-Resolution Sparse MIMO-OFDM Channel Estimation Based on Spatial and Temporal Correlations

This letter proposes a parametric sparse multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-OFDM channel estimation scheme based on the finite rate of innovation (FRI) theory, whereby super-resolution estimates of path delays with arbitrary values can be achieved. Meanwhile, both the spatial and temporal correlations of wireless MIMO channels are exploited to improve the accuracy of the channel estimation. For outdoor communication scenarios, where wireless channels are sparse in nature, path delays of different transmit-receive antenna pairs share a common sparse pattern due to the spatial correlation of MIMO channels. Meanwhile, the channel sparse pattern is nearly unchanged during several adjacent OFDM symbols due to the temporal correlation of MIMO channels. By simultaneously exploiting those MIMO channel characteristics, the proposed scheme performs better than existing state-of-the-art schemes. Furthermore, by joint processing of signals associated with different antennas, the pilot overhead can be reduced under the framework of the FRI theory.
