fPINN-DeepONet: A Physics-Informed Operator Learning Framework for Multi-term Time-fractional Mixed Diffusion-wave Equations

In this paper, we develop a physics-informed deep operator learning framework for solving multi-term time-fractional mixed diffusion-wave equations (TFMDWEs). We begin by deriving an $L_2$ approximation, which achieves first-order accuracy for the Caputo fractional derivative of order $β\in (1,2)$. Building upon this foundation, we propose the fPINN-DeepONet framework, a novel approach that integrates operator learning with the $L_2$ approximation to efficiently solve fractional partial differential equations (FPDEs). Our framework is successfully applied to both fixed and variable fractional-order PDEs, demonstrating the framework's versatility and broad applicability. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, we conduct a series of numerical experiments that involve dynamically varying fractional orders in both space and time, as well as scenarios with noisy data. These results highlight the accuracy, robustness, and efficiency of the fPINN-DeepONet framework.

Fractional-order dependent Radial basis functions meshless methods for the integral fractional Laplacian

We study the numerical evaluation of the integral fractional Laplacian and its application in solving fractional diffusion equations. We derive a pseudo-spectral formula for the integral fractional Laplacian operator based on fractional order-dependent, generalized multi-quadratic radial basis functions (RBFs) to address efficient computation of the hyper-singular integral. We apply the proposed formula to solving fractional diffusion equations and design a simple, easy-to-implement and nearly integration-free meshless method. We discuss the convergence of the novel meshless method through equivalent Galerkin formulations. We carry out numerical experiments to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach compared to the existing method using Gaussian RBFs.

A simple and fast finite difference method for the integral fractional Laplacian of variable order

For the fractional Laplacian of variable order, an efficient and accurate numerical evaluation in multi-dimension is a challenge for the nature of a singular integral. We propose a simple and easy-to-implement finite difference scheme for the multi-dimensional variable-order fractional Laplacian defined by a hypersingular integral. We prove that the scheme is of second-order convergence and apply the developed finite difference scheme to solve various equations with the variable-order fractional Laplacian. We present a fast solver with quasi-linear complexity of the scheme for computing variable-order fractional Laplacian and corresponding PDEs. Several numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of our algorithm and verify our theory.

On spectral Petrov-Galerkin method for solving fractional initial value problems in weighted Sobolev space

In this paper, we investigate a spectral Petrov-Galerkin method for fractional initial value problems. Singularities of the solution at the origin inherited from the weakly singular kernel of the fractional derivative are considered, and the regularity is constructed for the solution in weighted Sobolev space. We present an optimal error estimate of the spectral Petrov-Galerkin method, and prove that the convergence order of the method in the weighted $L^2$-norm is $3α+1$ for smooth source term, where $α$ is the order of the fractional derivative. An iteration algorithm with a quasi-linear complexity is considered to solve the produced linear system. Numerical experiments verify the theoretical findings and show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, and exhibit that the presented numerical method works well for some time-fractional diffusion equations after suitable temporal semi-discrete.

Regularity and spectral methods for two-sided fractional diffusion equations with a low-order term

We study regularity and numerical methods for two-sided fractional diffusion equations with a lower-order term. We show that the regularity of the solution in weighted Sobolev spaces can be greatly improved compared to that in standard Sobolev spaces. With this regularity, we improve higher-order convergence of a spectral Galerkin method. We present a spectral Petrov-Galerkin method and provide an optimal error estimate for the Petrov-Galerkin method. Numerical results are presented to verify our theoretical convergence orders.

A second-order difference scheme for the time fractional substantial diffusion equation

In this work, a second-order approximation of the fractional substantial derivative is presented by considering a modified shifted substantial Grünwald formula and its asymptotic expansion. Moreover, the proposed approximation is applied to a fractional diffusion equation with fractional substantial derivative in time. With the use of the fourth-order compact scheme in space, we give a fully discrete Grünwald-Letnikov-formula-based compact difference scheme and prove its stability and convergence by the energy method under smooth assumptions. In addition, the problem with nonsmooth solution is also discussed, and an improved algorithm is proposed to deal with the singularity of the fractional substantial derivative. Numerical examples show the reliability and efficiency of the scheme.
