Spatiotemporal solitary modes in a twisted cylinder waveguide pipe with the self-focusing Kerr nonlinearity

We study the spatiotemporal solitary modes that propagate in a hollow twisted cylinder waveguide pipe with a self-focusing Kerr nonlinearity. Three generic solitary modes, one belonging to the zero-harmonic (0H) and the other two belonging to the first-harmonic (1H), are found in the first rotational Brillouin zone. The 0H solitary modes can be termed as a quasi-1D (one-dimensional) temporal soliton. Their characteristics depend only on the energy flow. The 1H solitary mode can be termed a quasi-2D (two-dimensional) bullet, whose width is much narrower than the angular domain of the waveguide. In contrast to the 0H mode, the characteristics of the 1H solitary mode depend on both their energy flow and the rotating speed of the waveguide. We demonstrate numerically that the 1H solitary modes are stable when their energy flow is smaller than the threshold norm of the \emph{Townes soliton}. The boundaries of the bistable area for these two types of solitary modes are predicted by the analyses via two-mode approximation. This prediction is in accordance with the numerical findings. We also demonstrate analytically that the 1H solitary mode of this system can be applied to emulate the nonlinear dynamics of solitary modes with 1D Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling by optics. Two degenerated states of the 1H solitary mode, semi-dipole and mixed mode, are found from this setting via the mechanism of SO coupling. Collisions between the pair of these two types of solitary modes are also discussed in the paper. The pair of the 0H solitary mode features only the elastic collision, whereas the pair of 1H solitary modes can feature both elastic and inelastic collision when the total energy flow of the two modes are smaller or close to the threshold norm of the \emph{Townes soliton}.

Two-dimensional solitons and quantum droplets supported by competing self- and cross-interactions in spin-orbit-coupled condensates

We study two-dimensional (2D) matter-wave solitons in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) under the action of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and opposite signs of the self- and cross-interactions. Stable 2D two-component solitons of the mixed-mode (MM) type are found if the cross-interaction between the components is attractive, while the self-interaction is repulsive in each component. Stable solitons of the semi-vortex type are formed in the opposite case, under the action of competing self-attraction and cross-repulsion. The solitons exist with the total norm taking values below a collapse threshold. Further, in the case of the repulsive self-interaction and inter-component attraction, stable 2D self-trapped modes, which may be considered as quantum droplets (QDs), are created if the beyond-mean-field Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) terms are added to the self-repulsion in the underlying system of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Stable QDs of the MM type, of a large size with an anisotropic density profile, exist with arbitrarily large values of the norm, as the LHY terms eliminate the collapse. The effect of the SOC term on characteristics of the QDs is systematically studied. We also address the existence and stability of QDs in the case of SOC with mixed Rashba and Dresselhaus terms, which makes the density profile of the QD more isotropic. Thus, QDs in the spin-orbit-coupled binary BEC are for the first time studied in the present work.

Dipolar bright solitons and solitary vortices in a radial lattice

Stabilizing vortex solitons with high values of the topological charge, S, is a challenging issue in optics, studies of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and other fields. To develop a new approach to the solution of this problem, we consider a two-dimensional dipolar BEC under the action of an axisymmetric radially periodic lattice potential, $V(r)\sim \cos (2r+δ)$, with dipole moments polarized perpendicular to the system's plane, which gives rise to isotropic repulsive dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs). Two radial lattices are considered, with $δ=0$ and $π$, i.e., a potential maximum or minimum at $r=0$, respectively. Families of vortex gapsoliton (GSs) with $S=1$ and $S\geq 2$, the latter ones often being unstable in other settings, are completely stable in the present system (at least, up to $S=11$), being trapped in different annular troughs of the radial potential. The vortex solitons with different $S$ may stably coexist in sufficiently far separated troughs. Fundamental GSs, with $S=0$, are found too. In the case of $δ=0$, the fundamental solitons are ring-shaped modes, with a local minimum at $r=0.$At $δ=π$, they place a density peak at the center.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking of fundamental states, vortices, and dipoles in two- and one-dimensional linearly coupled traps with cubic self-attraction

We introduce two- and one-dimensional (2D and 1D) systems of two linearly-coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs) with the cubic self-attraction and harmonic-oscillator (HO) trapping potential in each GPE. The system models a Bose-Einstein condensate with a negative scattering length, loaded in a double-pancake trap, combined with the in-plane HO potential. In addition to that, the 1D version applies to the light transmission in a dual-core waveguide with the Kerr nonlinearity and in-core confinement represented by the HO potential. The subject of the analysis is spontaneous symmetry breaking in 2D and 1D ground-state (GS, alias fundamental) modes, as well as in 2D vortices and 1D dipole modes (the latter ones do not exist without the HO potential). By means of the variational approximation and numerical analysis, it is found that both the 2D and 1D systems give rise to a symmetry-breaking bifurcation (SBB) of the supercrtical type. Stability of symmetric states and asymmetric ones, produced by the SBB, is analyzed through the computation of eigenvalues for perturbation modes, and verified by direct simulations. The asymmetric GSs are always stable, while the stability region for vortices shrinks and eventually disappears with the increase of the linear-coupling constant, $ κ$. The SBB in the 2D system does not occur if $κ$ is too large (at $κ>κ_{\max }$); in that case, the two-component system behaves, essentially, as its single-component counterpart. In the 1D system, both asymmetric and symmetric dipole modes feature an additional oscillatory instability, unrelated to the symmetry breaking. This instability occurs in several regions, which expand with the increase of $κ$.

Two-dimensional solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling

We report families of two-dimensional (2D) composite solitons in spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, with two localized components linearly mixed by the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and the intrinsic nonlinearity represented by the dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) between atomic magnetic moments polarized in-plane by an external magnetic field. Recently, stable solitons were predicted in the form of \textit{semi-vortices} (composites built of coupled fundamental and vortical components) in the 2D system combining the SOC and contact attractive interactions. Replacing the latter by the anisotropic long-range DDI, we demonstrate that, for a fixed norm of the soliton, the system supports a \emph{continuous family} of stable spatially asymmetric vortex solitons (AVSs), parameterized by an offset of the pivot of the vortical component relative to its fundamental counterpart. The offset is limited by a certain maximum value, while the energy of the AVS practically does not depend on the offset. At small values of the norm, the vortex solitons are subject to a weak oscillatory instability. In the present system, with the Galilean invariance broken by the SOC, the composite solitons are set in motion by a kick whose strength exceeds a certain depinning value. The kicked solitons feature a negative effective mass, drifting along a spiral trajectory opposite to the direction of the kick. A critical angular velocity, up to which the semi-vortices may follow rotation of the polarizing magnetic field, is found too.

Discrete solitons and vortices on two-dimensional lattices of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric couplers

We introduce a 2D network built of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dimers with on-site cubic nonlinearity, the gain and loss elements of the dimers being linked by parallel square-shaped lattices. The system may be realized as a set of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dual-core waveguides embedded into a photonic crystal. The system supports $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and antisymmetric fundamental solitons (FSs) and on-site-centered solitary vortices (OnVs). Stability of these discrete solitons is the central topic of the consideration. Their stability regions in the underlying parameter space are identified through the computation of stability eigenvalues, and verified by direct simulations. Symmetric FSs represent the system's ground state, being stable at lowest values of the power, while anti-symmetric FSs and OnVs are stable at higher powers. Symmetric OnVs, which are also stable at lower powers, are remarkably robust modes: on the contrary to other PT-symmetric states, unstable OnVs do not blow up, but spontaneously rebuild themselves into stable FSs.
