Geometric constellation shaping for wireless optical intensity channels: An information-theoretic approach

A simple geometric shaping method is proposed for optical wireless communication systems based on intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) from an information-theoretic perspective. Constellations consisting of equiprobable levels with exponential-like distribution are obtained, which possesses asymptotic optimality in the sense that the high-SNR capacity of average-intensity constrained optical intensity channel can be approached by such constellations with increasing size. All $2^b$ levels ($b\in\mathbb N$) of the obtained constellation can be represented by a basic level and $b+2$ bits, thereby reducing the required resolution of the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) without affecting the asymptotic optimality. Achievable information rate evaluations verify the asymptotic optimality. As an example, error performance results of a simple $16$-level LDPC coded modulation scheme show that a shaping gain of $0.65$ dB can be obtained by applying the proposed constellation design. This method can also be applied to more specific IM/DD channel models, since it only requires a near-optimal continuous input distribution.

Joint Base Station Activation and Coordinated Downlink Beamforming for HetNets: Efficient Optimal and Suboptimal Algorithms

In cellular heterogeneous networks (HetNets), a number of distributed base stations cooperatively provide services to multiple mobile users. This paper addresses joint base-station activation and coordinated beamforming design for downlink transmission in HetNets. To this end, a mixed integer program is formulated to optimize the total power consumption of a HetNet. A novel approach based on Benders' decomposition is then put forth to obtain the optimal solution for the problem of interest with guaranteed convergence. Building on our new formulation, a dual-subgradient algorithm is also proposed to find an approximate solution in polynomial time. The proposed approaches can be generalized to more general setups, including robust beamforming designs under channel uncertainty, and coordinated beamforming for multi-cell scenarios.

DEBIT: Distributed Energy Beamforming and Information Transfer for Multiway Relay Networks

In this paper, we propose a new distributed energy beamforming and information transfer (DEBIT) scheme for realizing simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in multiway relay networks (MWRNs), where multiple single-antenna users exchange information via an energy-constrained single-antenna relay node. We investigate the optimal transceiver designs to maximize the achievable sum-rate or the harvested power. The resultant sum-rate maximization problem is non-convex and the global optimal solution can be obtained through a three-dimensional search in combination with conventional convex optimization. To reduce the computation complexity, a suboptimal DEBIT scheme is also proposed, for which the optimization problem becomes linear programming. The achievable sum-rate performance is analyzed and a closed-form lower bound is derived for the MWRN with a large number of users. Furthermore, we consider the harvested-power maximization problem under a target sum-rate constraint, and derive a lower bound of the average harvested power for MWRNs with a large number of users. Numerical results show that the DEBIT scheme significantly outperforms the conventional SWIPT and the derived lower bounds are tight.

Towards the Asymptotic Sum Capacity of the MIMO Cellular Two-Way Relay Channel

In this paper, we consider the transceiver and relay design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular two-way relay channel (cTWRC), where a multi-antenna base station (BS) exchanges information with multiple multi-antenna mobile stations via a multi-antenna relay station (RS). We propose a novel two-way relaying scheme to approach the sum capacity of the MIMO cTWRC.
