Interaction between an impurity and nonlinear excitations in a polariton condensate

Exploring the dynamics of a mobile impurity immersed in the field excitations is challenging, as it requires to account for the entanglement between the impurity and the surrounding excitations. To this end, the impurity's effective mass has to be considered as finite, rather than infinite. Here, we theoretically investigate the interaction between a finite-mass impurity and a dissipative soliton representing nonlinear excitations in the polariton Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Using the Lagrange variational method and the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we analytically derive the interaction phase diagram between the impurity and a dissipative bright soliton in the polariton BEC. Depending on the impurity mass, we find the dissipative soliton colliding with the impurity can transmit through, get trapped, or be reflected. This work opens a new perspective in understanding the impurity dynamics immersed in the field excitations, as well as potential applications in information processing with polariton solitons.

Hierarchical dimensional crossover of an optically-trapped quantum gas with disorder

Dimensionality serves as an indispensable ingredient in any attempt to formulate the low-dimensional physics, and studying the dimensional crossover at a fundamental level is challenging. The purpose of this work is to study the hierarchical dimensional crossovers, namely the crossover from three dimensions (3D) to quasi-2D and then to 1D. Our system consists of a 3D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in an anisotropic 2D optical lattice characterized by the lattice depths $V_1$ along the $x$ direction and $V_2$ along the $y$ direction, respectively, where the hierarchical dimensional crossover is controlled via $V_1$ and $V_2$. We analytically derive the ground-state energy, quantum depletion and the superfluid density of the system. Our results demonstrate the 3D-quasi-2D-1D dimensional crossovers in the behavior of quantum fluctuations. Conditions for possible experimental realization of our scenario are also discussed.

Dynamics of two dark solitons in a polariton condensate under non-resonant pumping

We theoretically investigate the dynamics of two dark solitons in a polariton condensate under nonresonant pumping, based on driven dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation. In particular, the analytical expression of the effective potential between two dark solitons is given. The resulting equation of motion captures how the open-dissipative character of a polariton Bose-Einstein condensate affects the properties of dynamics of two-dark soliton, i.e., two-dark soliton relax by blending with the background at a finite time. We further simulate the relative motion of two dark solitons numerically with the emphasis on how two solitons' motion being manipulated the initial velocity, which are in excellent agreement with the analytical results. The prediction of this work is sufficient for the experimental observations within current facilities.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparencies with Two Transverse Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Four-Mirror Cavity

We investigate electromagnetically induced transparencies with two transverse Bose-Einstein condensates in four-mirror optical cavity, driven by a strong pump laser and a weak probe laser. The cavity mode, after getting split from beam splitter, interacts with two independent Bose-Einstein Condensates transversely trapped in the arms of the cavity along $x$-axis and $y$-axis. The interaction of intra-cavity optical mode excites momentum side modes in Bose-Einstein Condensates, which then mimic as two atomic mirrors coupled through cavity field. We show that the probe field photons transition through the atomic mirrors yields to two coupled electromagnetically induced transparency windows, which only exist when both atomic states are coupled with the cavity. Further, the strength of these novel electromagnetically induced transparencies gets increased with an increase in atom-cavity coupling. Furthermore, we investigate the behavior of Fano resonances and dynamics of fast and slow light. We illustrate that the Fano line shapes and dynamics of slow light can be enhanced by strengthening the interaction between atomic states and cavity mode. Our findings not only contribute to the quantum nonlinear optics of complex systems but also provide a platform to test multi-dimensional atomic states in a single system.

Floquet and Anomalous Floquet Weyl Semimetals

The periodic driving of a quantum system can enable new topological phases without analogs in static systems. This provides a route towards preparing non-equilibrium quantum phases rooted into the non-equilibrium nature by periodic driving engineering. Motivated by the ongoing considerable interest in topological semimetals, we are interested in the novel topological phases in the periodically driven topological semimetals without a static counterpart. We propose to design non-equilibrium topological semimetals in the regime of weakly driving field where the spectrum width of shares the same magnitude with the driving frequency. We identify two novel types of non-equilibrium Weyl semimetals (i.e., Floquet and anomalous Floquet Weyl semimetals) that do not exhibit analogues in equilibrium. The proposed setup is shown to be experimentally feasible using the state-of-the-art techniques used to control ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

The non-Hermitian geometrical property of 1D Lieb lattice under Majorana's stellar representation

The topological properties of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is a hot topic, and the theoretical studies along this research line are usually based on the two-level non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (or, equivalently, a spin-$1/2$ non-Hermitian Hamiltonian). We are motivated to study the geometrical phases of a three-level Lieb lattice model (or, equivalently, a spin-$1$ non-Hermitian Hamiltonian) with the complex hopping and flat band in the context of a polariton condensate, with the emphasis on the higher spin degree of freedom on topological properties of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The topological invariants are calculated by both winding numbers in the Brillouin zone and the geometrical phase of Majorana stars in the Bloch sphere. Besides, we provide an intuitive way to study the topological phase transformation in high dimensions, and the flat band offers a platform to define the high spin topological phase transition on the Bloch sphere. According to the trajectories of the Majorana stars, we calculate the geometrical phases of the Majorana stars, and we find they have a jump when the parameters change from the trivial phase to the topological phase. Besides, the correlation phase of Majorana stars will rise along with the increase of the imaginary parts of the hopping energy.

Drag force of a exciton-polariton condensate under non-resonant pumping

Exciton-polariton condensate in semiconductor microcavities constitute a novel kind of non-equilibrium superfluid. In a recent experiment [P. Stepanov, {\it et. al.,} Nat. Commun. {\bf 10}, 1038 (2019)], the dispersion relation of collective excitations in a polariton condensate under the resonant pumping has been investigated with the emphasis on the role of reservoir of long-lived excitons in determining the superfluidity. Inspired by such an experimental advance, we study the superfluidity of a exciton-polaritonn condensate under non-resonant pumping by calculating the drag force exerted on a classical impurity moving in a polariton condensate. For a non-resonant pumped polariton condensate prepared in the gapped phase, due to the reservoir's modes, the drag force can be large when the velocity of the impurity is small. Besides, as the velocity increases, the drag force can decrease. For not very large velocity, the drag force is enhanced if the condensate is tuned to be more dissipative. When the condensate is close to the transition point between the gapped phase and the gapless one, the drag force is similar to that of the equilibrium superfluid. Our present work reveals the effects of the reservoir's modes on the superfluidity properties of a polariton condensate with the non-resonant pumping.

Dark soliton of polariton condensates under nonresonant PT-symmetric pumping

A quantum system in complex potentials obeying parity-time (PT ) symmetry could exhibit all real spectra, starting out in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. The key physics behind a PT-symmetric system consists of the balanced gain and loss of the complex potential. In this work, we plan to include the nonequilibrium nature, i.e. the intrinsic kinds of gain and loss of a system, to a PT-symmetric many-body quantum system, with the emphasis on the combined effects of non-Hermitian due to nonequilibrium nature and PT symmetry in determining the properties of a system. In this end, we investigate the static and dynamical properties of a dark soliton of a polariton Bose-Einstein condensate under the PT-symmetric non-resonant pumping by solving the driven-dissipative GrossPitaevskii equation both analytically and numerically. We derive the equation of motion for the center of mass of the dark solitons center analytically with the help of the Hamiltonian approach. The resulting equation captures how the combination of the open-dissipative character and PT-symmetry affects the properties of dark soliton, i.e. the soliton relaxes by blending with the background at a finite time. Further numerical solutions are in excellent agreement with the analytical results.

Nonequilibrium Landau-Zener Tunneling in Exciton-Polariton Condensates

For a coherent quantum mechanical two-level system driven with a linearly time-dependent detuning, the Landau-Zener model has served over decades as a textbook model of quantum dynamics. A particularly intriguing question is whether that framework can be extended to capture an intrinsical nonequilibrium nature for a quantum system with coherent and dissipative dynamics occurring on an equal footing. In this work, we are motivated to investigate the Landau-Zenner problem of polariton condensates in a periodic potential under nonresonant pumping, considering driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation of a reservoir. Using a two-mode approach, we find fluctuation of the reservoir can be considered as a constant and the relative phase plays a very important role. The evolution of the dissipative Landau-Zener model we obtain presents its adiabatic process very different from the closed system because the fluctuation of the reservoir has a peak and leads to the damping of the condensates. We substitute the fluctuation of the reservoir to Hamiltonian and get an effective two-level model. The motion of Hamiltonian in phase space is also discussed and is directly corresponding to the pumping rate. The instability of the band structure can also be studied by the curvatures in phase space and there may be two loops in the middle of the Brillouin zone when the pumping rate is far beyond the threshold.

Dissipative Magnetic Polariton Soliton

Dissipative solitons are non-decaying out-of-equilibrium entities that result from double balances between gain and loss, as well as nonlinearity and dispersion. Here we describe a scenario where double balances rely on the presence of multiple collective excitation channels in open-dissipative quantum systems. It differs from conventional single-channel scenario for well-known dissipative solitons such as dissipative Kerr solitons, in that the soliton itself arises in a decoupled excitation channel and hence coherent nonlinear excitation dynamics, but its background state corresponds to other channels and is determined by the balance of pumping and dissipation. We demonstrate with a spinor polariton Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) under spatially uniform nonresonant pumping, and show the existence of a dissipative magnetic soliton as an exact solution to two-component driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This magnetic polariton soliton manifests as a localized spin polarization with the background state being linearly polarized, and does not decay when propagating in the dissipative medium. Our present work offers a new perspective as well as new benchmarks for understanding and realizing dissipative solitons.

Non-equilibrium quantum phase transition in a spinor quantum gas in a lattice coupled to a membrane

Recently, a novel kind of hybrid atom-optomechanical system, consisting of atoms in a lattice coupled to a membrane, has been experimentally realized [Vochezer {\it et al.,} Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{120}, 073602 (2018)], which promises a viable contender in the competitive field of simulating non-equilibrium many-body physics. Here we are motivated to investigate a spinor Bose gas coupled to a vibrational mode of a nano-membrane, focusing on analyzing the role of the spinor degrees of freedom therein. Through an adiabatic elimination of the degrees of freedom of the quantum oscillator, we derive an effective Hamiltonian which reveals a competition between the force localizing the atoms and the membrane displacement. We analyze the dynamical stability of the steady state using Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach and derive the stationary phase diagram in the parameter space. We investigate the non-equilibrium quantum phase transition from a localized symmetric state of the atom cloud to a shifted symmetry-broken state, where we present a detailed analysis of the effects of the spin degree of freedom. Our work presents a simple way to study the effects of the spinor degree of freedom on the non-equilibrium nonlinear phenomena that is complementary to ongoing experiments on the hybrid atom-optomechanical system.

Tail-free self-accelerating solitons and vortices

Self-accelerating waves in conservative systems, which usually feature slowly decaying tails, such as Airy waves, have drawn great interest in studies of quantum and classical wave dynamics. They typically appear in linear media, while nonlinearities tend to deform and eventually destroy them. We demonstrate, by means of analytical and numerical methods, the existence of robust one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) self-accelerating tailless solitons and solitary vortices in a model of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, dressed by a microwave (MW) field, whose magnetic component mediates long-range interaction between the matter-wave constituents, with the feedback of the matter waves on the MW field taken into account. In particular, self-accelerating 2D solitons may move along a curved trajectory in the coordinate plane. The system may also include the spin-orbit coupling between the components, leading to similar results for the self-acceleration. The effect persists if the contact cubic nonlinearity is included. A similar mechanism may generate 1D and 2D self-accelerating solitons in optical media with thermal nonlinearity.

Steady-state phase diagram of quantum gases in a lattice coupled to a membrane

In a recent experiment [Vochezer {\it et al.,} Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{120}, 073602 (2018)], a novel kind of hybrid atom-opto-mechanical system has been realized by coupling atoms in a lattice to a membrane. While such system promises a viable contender in the competitive field of simulating non-equilibrium many-body physics, its complete steady-state phase diagram is still lacking. Here we study the phase diagram of this hybrid system based on an atomic Bose-Hubbard model coupled to a quantum harmonic oscillator. We take both the expectation value of the bosonic operator and the mechanical motion of the membrane as order parameters, and thereby identify four different quantum phases. Importantly, we find the atomic gas in the steady state of such non-equilibrium setting undergoes a superfluid-Mott-insulator transition when the atom-membrane coupling is tuned to increase. Such steady-state phase transition can be seen as the non-equilibrium counterpart of the conventional superfluid-Mott-insulator transition in the ground state of Bose-Hubbard model. Further, no matter which phase the quantum gas is in, the mechanic motion of the membrane exhibits a transition from an incoherent vibration to a coherent one when the atom-membrane coupling increases, agreeing with the experimental observations. Our present study provides a simple way to study non-equilibrium many-body physics that is complementary to ongoing experiments on the hybrid atomic and opto-mechanical systems.

Dark-bright solitons in spinor polariton condensates under nonresonant pumping

Adopting a mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii description for a spinor polariton Bose-Einstein condensates under non-resonant pumping, we investigate the static and dynamical properties of dark-bright solitons. We derive analytically the equation of motion for the center of mass of the dark-bright soliton center, using the Hamiltonian approach. The resulting equation captures how the combination of the open-dissipative character and the spin degrees of freedom of a polariton Bose-Einstein condensate affects the properties of a dark-bright soliton, i.e. the dark-bright soliton relaxes by blending with the background at a finite time. In this case, we also determine the life time of the DB soliton. Further numerical solutions of the modified dissipative two-component Gross-Pitaevskii equations are in excellent agreement with the analytical results. In presence of the Langevin noise, we demonstrate that the DB solitons can still propagate for a long time, which is sufficient for their experimental observations within current facilities.

Beliaev Damping in Spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Interacting Bosons with Spin-Orbit Coupling

Beliaev damping provides one of the most important mechanisms for dissipation of quasiparticles through beyond-mean-field effects at zero temperature. Here we present the first analytical result of Beliaev damping in low-energy excitations of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ interacting bosons with equal Rashba and Dresslhaus spin-orbit couplings. We identify novel features of Beliaev decay rate due to spin-orbit coupling, in particular, it shows explicit dependence on the spin-density interaction and diverges at the interaction-modified phase boundary between the zero-momentum and plane-wave phases. This represents a manifestation of the effect of spin-orbit coupling in the beyond-mean-field regime, which by breaking Galilean invariance couples excitations in the density- and spin-channels. By describing the Beliaev damping in terms of the observable dynamic structure factors, our results allow direct experimental access within current facilities.

Spinor polariton condensates under nonresonant pumping: Steady states and elementary excitations

We theoretically investigate a spinor polariton condensate under nonresonant pumping, based on driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation of a spin-unpolarized reservoir. We find the homogeneous polariton condensate can transit from the spin-unpolarized phase, where it is linearly polarized, to the spin-polarized phase, where it is elliptically polarized, depending on the cross-spin versus same-spin interactions and the linear polarization splitting. In both phases, we study elementary excitations using Bogoliubov approach, in a regime where the decay rate of total exciton density in reservoir crosses over from the slow to the fast limit. Depending on reservoir parameters, the global-phase mode can be either diffusive or gapped. By contrast, the relative-phase mode always possesses a gapped energy, undamped in the spin-unpolarized phase but weakly damped in the spin-polarized phase. In the spin-unpolarized phase, both modes are linearly polarized despite pumping and decay. However, in the spin-polarized phase, the mode polarization can be significantly affected by the reservoir and depends strongly on the circular polarization degree of the condensate. Interestingly, we demonstrate that the `ghost' branch of the Bogoliubov spectrum of the relative-phase mode can be visualized in the photoluminescence emission, distinguishable from that of the global-phase mode and thus allowing for experimental observation, when the spinor polariton condensate is elliptically polarized.

CoMET: Composite-Input Magnetoelectric-based Logic Technology

This work proposes CoMET, a fast and energy-efficient spintronics device for logic applications. An input voltage is applied to a ferroelectric (FE) material, in contact with a composite structure - a ferromagnet (FM) with in-plane magnetic anisotropy (IMA) placed on top of an intra-gate FM interconnect with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Through the magnetoelectric (ME) effect, the input voltage nucleates a domain wall (DW) at the input end of the PMA-FM interconnect. An applied current then rapidly propagates the DW towards the output FE structure, where the inverse-ME effect generates an output voltage. This voltage is propagated to the input of the next CoMET device using a novel circuit structure that enables efficient device cascading. The material parameters for CoMET are optimized by systematically exploring the impact of parameter choices on device performance. Simulations on a 7nm CoMET device show fast, low-energy operation, with a delay/energy of 98ps/68aJ for INV and 135ps/85aJ for MAJ3.

STEM: A Scheme for Two-phase Evaluation of Majority Logic

The switching time of a magnet in a spin current based majority gate depends on the input vector combination, and this often restricts the speed of majority-based circuits. To address this issue, this work proposes a novel two-phase scheme to implement majority logic and evaluates it on an all-spin logic (ASL) majority-based logic structures. In Phase 1, the output is initialized to a preset value. Next in Phase 2, the inputs are evaluated to switch the output magnet to its correct value. The time window for the output to switch in Phase 2 is fixed. Using such a scheme, an n-input AND gate which requires a total of (2n-1) inputs in the conventional implementation can now be implemented with only (n+1) inputs. When applied to standard logic functions, it is demonstrated that the proposed method of designing ASL gates are 1.6-3.4X faster and 1.9-6.9X more energy-efficient than the conventional method, and for a five-magnet full adder, it is shown that the proposed ASL implementation is 1.5X faster, 2.2X more energy-efficient, and provides a 16% improvement in area.
