Mean Field Game-based Waveform Precoding Design for Mobile Crowd Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Computation Systems

Data collection and processing timely is crucial for mobile crowd integrated sensing, communication, and computation~(ISCC) systems with various applications such as smart home and connected cars, which requires numerous integrated sensing and communication~(ISAC) devices to sense the targets and offload the data to the base station~(BS) for further processing. However, as the number of ISAC devices growing, there exists intensive interactions among ISAC devices in the processes of data collection and processing since they share the common network resources. In this paper, we consider the environment sensing problem in the large-scale mobile crowd ISCC systems and propose an efficient waveform precoding design algorithm based on the mean field game~(MFG). Specifically, to handle the complex interactions among large-scale ISAC devices, we first utilize the MFG method to transform the influence from other ISAC devices into the mean field term and derive the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation, which models the evolution of the system state. Then, we derive the cost function based on the mean field term and reformulate the waveform precoding design problem. Next, we utilize the G-prox primal-dual hybrid gradient algorithm to solve the reformulated problem and analyze the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can solve the interactions among large-scale ISAC devices effectively in the ISCC process. In addition, compared with other baselines, the proposed waveform precoding design algorithm has advantages in improving communication performance and reducing cost function.

Nonreciprocal spontaneous parametric process

Mediated by the interaction with quantum vacuum fields, a laser field propagating in a nonlinear optical medium can generate new light fields via spontaneous parametric process. Such process is inherent independent of the propagation direction of light and reciprocal thus far, due to the direction-independent field-vacuum interaction. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a nonreciprocal spontaneous parametric four-wave mixing process in sodium atomic vapors with dispersive nonlinearity and further broadband optical isolation by unidirectionally coupling the probe field to an auxiliary quantum vacuum field in another four-wave mixing process. Thanks to the broad bandwidth of the spontaneous parametric process, in combination with the Doppler and power-induced broadening of atomic energy levels, we achieve optical isolation with a bandwidth larger than 100 GHz for isolation ratio >25 dB. Considering that both spontaneous parametric processes and wave mixing in nonlinear medium have been realized in diverse on-chip photonic platforms, our work paves the way for integrated broadband optical isolations and thus can boost scalability and function of photonic chips.

Bayesian Learning for Double-RIS Aided ISAC Systems with Superimposed Pilots and Data

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has great potential to improve the performance of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems, especially in scenarios where line-of-sight paths between the base station and users are blocked. However, the spectral efficiency (SE) of RIS-aided ISAC uplink transmissions may be drastically reduced by the heavy burden of pilot overhead for realizing sensing capabilities. In this paper, we tackle this bottleneck by proposing a superimposed symbol scheme, which superimposes sensing pilots onto data symbols over the same time-frequency resources. Specifically, we develop a structure-aware sparse Bayesian learning framework, where decoded data symbols serve as side information to enhance sensing performance and increase SE. To meet the low-latency requirements of emerging ISAC applications, we further propose a low-complexity simultaneous communication and localization algorithm for multiple users. This algorithm employs the unitary approximate message passing in the Bayesian learning framework for initial angle estimate, followed by iterative refinements through reduced-dimension matrix calculations. Moreover, the sparse code multiple access technology is incorporated into this iterative framework for accurate data detection which also facilitates localization. Numerical results show that the proposed superimposed symbol-based scheme empowered by the developed algorithm can achieve centimeter-level localization while attaining up to $96\%$ of the SE of conventional communications without sensing capabilities. Moreover, compared to other typical ISAC schemes, the proposed superimposed symbol scheme can provide an effective throughput improvement over $133\%$.

TernaryVote: Differentially Private, Communication Efficient, and Byzantine Resilient Distributed Optimization on Heterogeneous Data

Distributed training of deep neural networks faces three critical challenges: privacy preservation, communication efficiency, and robustness to fault and adversarial behaviors. Although significant research efforts have been devoted to addressing these challenges independently, their synthesis remains less explored. In this paper, we propose TernaryVote, which combines a ternary compressor and the majority vote mechanism to realize differential privacy, gradient compression, and Byzantine resilience simultaneously. We theoretically quantify the privacy guarantee through the lens of the emerging f-differential privacy (DP) and the Byzantine resilience of the proposed algorithm. Particularly, in terms of privacy guarantees, compared to the existing sign-based approach StoSign, the proposed method improves the dimension dependence on the gradient size and enjoys privacy amplification by mini-batch sampling while ensuring a comparable convergence rate. We also prove that TernaryVote is robust when less than 50% of workers are blind attackers, which matches that of SIGNSGD with majority vote. Extensive experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Energy-efficient Beamforming for RISs-aided Communications: Gradient Based Meta Learning

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have become a promising technology to meet the requirements of energy efficiency and scalability in future six-generation (6G) communications. However, a significant challenge in RISs-aided communications is the joint optimization of active and passive beamforming at base stations (BSs) and RISs respectively. Specifically, the main difficulty is attributed to the highly non-convex optimization space of beamforming matrices at both BSs and RISs, as well as the diversity and mobility of communication scenarios. To address this, we present a greenly gradient based meta learning beamforming (GMLB) approach. Unlike traditional deep learning based methods which take channel information directly as input, GMLB feeds the gradient of sum rate into neural networks. Coherently, we design a differential regulator to address the phase shift optimization of RISs. Moreover, we use the meta learning to iteratively optimize the beamforming matrices of BSs and RISs. These techniques make the proposed method to work well without requiring energy-consuming pre-training. Simulations show that GMLB could achieve higher sum rate than that of typical alternating optimization algorithms with the energy consumption by two orders of magnitude less.

Coverage and Rate Analysis for Distributed RISs-Assisted mmWave Communications

The millimeter wave (mmWave) has received considerable interest due to its expansive bandwidth and high frequency. However, a noteworthy challenge arises from its vulnerability to blockages, leading to reduced coverage and achievable rates. To address these limitations, a potential solution is to deploy distributed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which comprise many low-cost and passively reflected elements, and can facilitate the establishment of extra communication links. In this paper, we leverage stochastic geometry to investigate the ergodic coverage probability and the achievable rate in both distributed RISs-assisted single-cell and multi-cell mmWave wireless communication systems. Specifically, we first establish the system model considering the stochastically distributed blockages, RISs and users by the Poisson point process. Then we give the association criterion and derive the association probabilities, the distance distributions, and the conditional coverage probabilities for two cases of associations between base stations and users without or with RISs. Finally, we use Campbell's theorem and the total probability theorem to obtain the closed-form expressions of the ergodic coverage probability and the achievable rate. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our analysis method, and demonstrate that by deploying distributed RISs, the ergodic coverage probability is significantly improved by approximately 50%, and the achievable rate is increased by more than 1.5 times.

Breaking the Communication-Privacy-Accuracy Tradeoff with $f$-Differential Privacy

We consider a federated data analytics problem in which a server coordinates the collaborative data analysis of multiple users with privacy concerns and limited communication capability. The commonly adopted compression schemes introduce information loss into local data while improving communication efficiency, and it remains an open problem whether such discrete-valued mechanisms provide any privacy protection. In this paper, we study the local differential privacy guarantees of discrete-valued mechanisms with finite output space through the lens of $f$-differential privacy (DP). More specifically, we advance the existing literature by deriving tight $f$-DP guarantees for a variety of discrete-valued mechanisms, including the binomial noise and the binomial mechanisms that are proposed for privacy preservation, and the sign-based methods that are proposed for data compression, in closed-form expressions. We further investigate the amplification in privacy by sparsification and propose a ternary stochastic compressor. By leveraging compression for privacy amplification, we improve the existing methods by removing the dependency of accuracy (in terms of mean square error) on communication cost in the popular use case of distributed mean estimation, therefore breaking the three-way tradeoff between privacy, communication, and accuracy. Finally, we discuss the Byzantine resilience of the proposed mechanism and its application in federated learning.

A Joint Communication and Computation Framework for Digital Twin over Wireless Networks

In this paper, the problem of low-latency communication and computation resource allocation for digital twin (DT) over wireless networks is investigated. In the considered model, multiple physical devices in the physical network (PN) needs to frequently offload the computation task related data to the digital network twin (DNT), which is generated and controlled by the central server. Due to limited energy budget of the physical devices, both computation accuracy and wireless transmission power must be considered during the DT procedure. This joint communication and computation problem is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the overall transmission delay of the system under total PN energy and DNT model accuracy constraints. To solve this problem, an alternating algorithm with iteratively solving device scheduling, power control, and data offloading subproblems. For the device scheduling subproblem, the optimal solution is obtained in closed form through the dual method. For the special case with one physical device, the optimal number of transmission times is reveled. Based on the theoretical findings, the original problem is transformed into a simplified problem and the optimal device scheduling can be found. Numerical results verify that the proposed algorithm can reduce the transmission delay of the system by up to 51.2\% compared to the conventional schemes.

Joint Semantic Communication and Target Sensing for 6G Communication System

This paper investigates the secure resource allocation for a downlink integrated sensing and communication system with multiple legal users and potential eavesdroppers. In the considered model, the base station (BS) simultaneously transmits sensing and communication signals through beamforming design, where the sensing signals can be viewed as artificial noise to enhance the security of communication signals. To further enhance the security in the semantic layer, the semantic information is extracted from the original information before transmission. The user side can only successfully recover the received information with the help of the knowledge base shared with the BS, which is stored in advance. Our aim is to maximize the sum semantic secrecy rate of all users while maintaining the minimum quality of service for each user and guaranteeing overall sensing performance. To solve this sum semantic secrecy rate maximization problem, an iterative algorithm is proposed using the alternating optimization method. The simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of secure semantic communication and reliable detection.

Channel Mapping Based on Interleaved Learning with Complex-Domain MLP-Mixer

In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, representing the whole channel only based on partial subchannels will significantly reduce the channel acquisition overhead. For such a channel mapping task, inspired by the intrinsic coupling across the space and frequency domains, this letter proposes to use interleaved learning with partial antenna and subcarrier characteristics to represent the whole MIMO-OFDM channel. Specifically, we design a complex-domain multilayer perceptron (MLP)-Mixer (CMixer), which utilizes two kinds of complex-domain MLP modules to learn the space and frequency characteristics respectively and then interleaves them to couple the learned properties. The complex-domain computation facilitates the learning on the complex-valued channel data, while the interleaving tightens the coupling of space and frequency domains. These two designs jointly reduce the learning burden, making the physics-inspired CMixer more effective on channel representation learning than existing data-driven approaches. Simulation shows that the proposed scheme brings 4.6~10dB gains in mapping accuracy compared to existing schemes under different settings. Besides, ablation studies show the necessity of complex-domain computation as well as the extent to which the interleaved learning matches the channel properties.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) offers various services to users through content creation, which is believed to be one of the most important components in future networks. However, training and deploying big artificial intelligence models (BAIMs) introduces substantial computational and communication overhead. This poses a critical challenge to centralized approaches, due to the need of high-performance computing infrastructure and the reliability, secrecy and timeliness issues in long-distance access of cloud services. Therefore, there is an urging need to decentralize the services, partly moving them from the cloud to the edge and establishing native GenAI services to enable private, timely, and personalized experiences. In this paper, we propose a brand-new bottom-up BAIM architecture with synergetic big cloud model and small edge models, and design a distributed training framework and a task-oriented deployment scheme for efficient provision of native GenAI services. The proposed framework can facilitate collaborative intelligence, enhance adaptability, gather edge knowledge and alleviate edge-cloud burden. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated through an image generation use case. Finally, we outline fundamental research directions to fully exploit the collaborative potential of edge and cloud for native GenAI and BAIM applications.

Point Cloud in the Air

Acquisition and processing of point clouds (PCs) is a crucial enabler for many emerging applications reliant on 3D spatial data, such as robot navigation, autonomous vehicles, and augmented reality. In most scenarios, PCs acquired by remote sensors must be transmitted to an edge server for fusion, segmentation, or inference. Wireless transmission of PCs not only puts on increased burden on the already congested wireless spectrum, but also confronts a unique set of challenges arising from the irregular and unstructured nature of PCs. In this paper, we meticulously delineate these challenges and offer a comprehensive examination of existing solutions while candidly acknowledging their inherent limitations. In response to these intricacies, we proffer four pragmatic solution frameworks, spanning advanced techniques, hybrid schemes, and distributed data aggregation approaches. In doing so, our goal is to chart a path toward efficient, reliable, and low-latency wireless PC transmission.

A Joint Communication and Computation Design for Semantic Wireless Communication with Probability Graph

In this paper, we delve into the challenge of optimizing joint communication and computation for semantic communication over wireless networks using a probability graph framework. In the considered model, the base station (BS) extracts the small-sized compressed semantic information through removing redundant messages based on the stored knowledge base. Specifically, the knowledge base is encapsulated in a probability graph that encapsulates statistical relations. At the user side, the compressed information is accurately deduced using the same probability graph employed by the BS. While this approach introduces an additional computational overhead for semantic information extraction, it significantly curtails communication resource consumption by transmitting concise data. We derive both communication and computation cost models based on the inference process of the probability graph. Building upon these models, we introduce a joint communication and computation resource allocation problem aimed at minimizing the overall energy consumption of the network, while accounting for latency, power, and semantic constraints. To address this problem, we obtain a closed-form solution for transmission power under a fixed semantic compression ratio. Subsequently, we propose an efficient linear search-based algorithm to attain the optimal solution for the considered problem with low computational complexity. Simulation results underscore the effectiveness of our proposed system, showcasing notable improvements compared to conventional non-semantic schemes.

Cached Transformers: Improving Transformers with Differentiable Memory Cache

This work introduces a new Transformer model called Cached Transformer, which uses Gated Recurrent Cached (GRC) attention to extend the self-attention mechanism with a differentiable memory cache of tokens. GRC attention enables attending to both past and current tokens, increasing the receptive field of attention and allowing for exploring long-range dependencies. By utilizing a recurrent gating unit to continuously update the cache, our model achieves significant advancements in \textbf{six} language and vision tasks, including language modeling, machine translation, ListOPs, image classification, object detection, and instance segmentation. Furthermore, our approach surpasses previous memory-based techniques in tasks such as language modeling and displays the ability to be applied to a broader range of situations.

Non-Hermitian delocalization in a 2D photonic quasicrystal

Quasicrystals show long-range order, but lack translational symmetry. So far, theoretical and experimental studies suggest that both Hermitian and non-Hermitian quasicrystals show localized eigenstates. This localization is due to the fractal structure of the spectrum in the Hermitian case and to the transition to diffusive bands via exceptional points in the non-Hermitian case. Here, we present an experimental study of a dodecagonal (12-fold) photonic quasicrystal based on electromagnetically-induced transparency in a Rb vapor cell. The transition to a quasicrystal is obtained by superposing two honeycomb lattices at 30$^\circ$ with a continuous tuning of their amplitudes. Non-Hermiticity is controlled independently. We study the spatial expansion of a probe wavepacket. In the Hermitian case, the wavepacket expansion is suppressed when the amplitude of the second lattice is increased (quasicrystal localization). We find a new regime, where increasing the non-Hermitian potential in the quasicrystal enhances spatial expansion, with the $C_{12}$ symmetry becoming visible in the wavepacket structure. This real-space expansion is due to a k-space localization on specific quasicrystal modes. Our results show that the non-Hermitian quasicrystal behavior is richer than previously thought. The localization properties of the quasicrystals can be used for beam tailoring in photonics, but are also important in other fields.

Robust Target Detection of Intelligent Integrated Optical Camera and mmWave Radar System

Target detection is pivotal for modern urban computing applications. While image-based techniques are widely adopted, they falter under challenging environmental conditions such as adverse weather, poor lighting, and occlusion. To improve the target detection performance under complex real-world scenarios, this paper proposes an intelligent integrated optical camera and millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar system. Utilizing both physical knowledge and data-driven methods, a long-term robust radar-camera fusion algorithm is proposed to solve the heterogeneous data fusion problem for detection improvement. For the occlusion scenarios, the proposed algorithm can effectively detect occluded targets with the help of memory through performing long-term detection. For dark scenarios with low-light conditions, the proposed algorithm can effectively mark the target in the dark picture as well as provide rough stickman imaging. The above two innovative functions of the hybrid optical camera and mmWave radar system are tested in real-world scenarios. The results demonstrate the robustness and significant enhancement in the target detection performance of our integrated system.

From Data-driven Learning to Physics-inspired Inferring: A Novel Mobile MIMO Channel Prediction Scheme Based on Neural ODE

In this paper, we propose an innovative learning-based channel prediction scheme so as to achieve higher prediction accuracy and reduce the requirements of huge amounts and strict sequential format of channel data. Inspired by the idea of the neural ordinary differential equation (Neural ODE), we first prove that the channel prediction problem can be modeled as an ODE problem with a known initial value by analyzing the physical process of electromagnetic wave propagation within a mobile environment. Then, we design a novel physics-inspired spatial channel gradient network (SCGnet), which represents the derivative process of channel varying as a special neural network and can obtain the gradients at any relative displacement needed for the ODE solving. With the SCGnet, the static channel at any location served by the base station is accurately inferred through consecutive propagation and integration. Finally, we design an efficient recurrent positioning algorithm based on some prior knowledge of user mobility to obtain the velocity vector and propose an approximate Doppler compensation method to make up the instantaneous angular-delay domain channel. Only discrete historical channel data is needed for the training, whereas only a few fresh channel measurements are needed for the prediction, which ensures the scheme's practicability. Comprehensive evaluations show that the proposed scheme is most efficient in representing, learning, and predicting mobile wireless channels.

GraSS: Contrastive Learning with Gradient Guided Sampling Strategy for Remote Sensing Image Semantic Segmentation

Self-supervised contrastive learning (SSCL) has achieved significant milestones in remote sensing image (RSI) understanding. Its essence lies in designing an unsupervised instance discrimination pretext task to extract image features from a large number of unlabeled images that are beneficial for downstream tasks. However, existing instance discrimination based SSCL suffer from two limitations when applied to the RSI semantic segmentation task: 1) Positive sample confounding issue; 2) Feature adaptation bias. It introduces a feature adaptation bias when applied to semantic segmentation tasks that require pixel-level or object-level features. In this study, We observed that the discrimination information can be mapped to specific regions in RSI through the gradient of unsupervised contrastive loss, these specific regions tend to contain singular ground objects. Based on this, we propose contrastive learning with Gradient guided Sampling Strategy (GraSS) for RSI semantic segmentation. GraSS consists of two stages: Instance Discrimination warm-up (ID warm-up) and Gradient guided Sampling contrastive training (GS training). The ID warm-up aims to provide initial discrimination information to the contrastive loss gradients. The GS training stage aims to utilize the discrimination information contained in the contrastive loss gradients and adaptively select regions in RSI patches that contain more singular ground objects, in order to construct new positive and negative samples. Experimental results on three open datasets demonstrate that GraSS effectively enhances the performance of SSCL in high-resolution RSI semantic segmentation. Compared to seven baseline methods from five different types of SSCL, GraSS achieves an average improvement of 1.57\% and a maximum improvement of 3.58\% in terms of mean intersection over the union. The source code is available at https://github.com/GeoX-Lab/GraSS
