Symmetry, causal structure and superluminality in Finsler spacetime

The superluminal behaviors of neutrinos were reported by the OPERA collaboration recently. It was also noticed by Cohen and Glashow that, in standard quantum field theory, the superluminal neutrinos would lose their energy via the Cherenkov-like process rapidly. Finslerian special relativity may provide a framework to cooperate with the OPERA neutrino superluminality without Cherenkov-like process. We present clearly the symmetry, causal structure and superluminality in Finsler spacetime. The principle of relativity and the causal law are preserved. The energy and momentum are well defined and conserved in Finslerian special relativity. The Cherenkov-like process is proved to be forbidden kinematically and the superluminal neutrinos would not lose energy in their distant propagations from CERN to the Gran Sasso Laboratory. The energy dependence of neutrino superluminality is studied based on the reported data of the OPERA collaboration as well as other groups.

Fine structure constant variation or spacetime anisotropy?

Recent observations on the quasar absorption spectra supply evidence for the variation of the fine structure constant $α$. In this paper, we propose another interpretation of the observational data on the quasar absorption spectra: a scenario with spacetime inhomogeneity and anisotropy. Maybe the spacetime is characterized by the Finsler geometry instead of the Riemann one. The Finsler geometry admits fewer symmetries than the Riemann geometry does. We investigate the Finslerian geodesic equations in the Randers spacetime (a special Finsler spacetime). It is found that the cosmological redshift in this spacetime deviates from the one in general relativity. The modification term to the redshift could be generally revealed as a monopole plus dipole function of spacetime locations and directions. We suggest that this modification corresponds to the spatial monopole and dipole of $α$ variation in the quasar absorption spectra.

OPERA superluminal neutrinos and Kinematics in Finsler spacetime

The OPERA collaboration recently reported that muon neutrinos could be superluminal. More recently, Cohen and Glashow pointed that such superluminal neutrinos would be suppressed since they lose their energies rapidly via bremsstrahlung. In this Letter, we propose that Finslerian nature of spacetime could account for the superluminal phenomena of particles. The Finsler spacetime permits the existence of superluminal behavior of particles while the casuality still holds. A new dispersion relation is obtained in a class of Finsler spacetime. It is shown that the superluminal speed is linearly dependent on the energy per unit mass of the particle. We find that such a superluminal speed formula is consistent with data of OPERA, MINOS and Fermilab-1979 neutrino experiments as well as observations on neutrinos from SN1987a.

Gravitational deflection of light in Rindler-type potential as a possible resolution to the observations of Bullet Cluster 1E0657-558

The surface density $Σ$-map and the convergence $κ$-map of Bullet Cluster 1E0657-558 show that the center of baryonic matters separates from the center of gravitational force, and the distribution of gravitational force do not possess spherical symmetry. This hints that a modified gravity with difference to Newtonian inverse-square law at large scale, and less symmetry is worth investigating. In this paper, we study the dynamics in Randers-Finsler spacetime. The Newtonian limit and gravitational deflection of light in a Rindler-type potential is focused in particular. It is shown that the convergence in Finsler spacetime could account for the observations of Bullet Cluster.

Resonant energy transfer enhanced by off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling

Dynamics of resonant energy transfer of a single excitation in a molecular dimer system is studied in the simultaneous presence of diagonal and off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling. It is found that the off-diagonal coupling plays an important role in the excitation energy transfer process. Coherent transfer can be found at arbitrary temperature for a non-vanishing off-diagonal coupling strength with an oscillation frequency of site populations that increases with the off-diagonal coupling strength. Furthermore, we identify a threshold of the off-diagonal coupling strength below which there exists an optimal temperature that maximizes the total population transfer from the initially excited monomer to the acceptor monomer at long times. As the off-diagonal coupling strength is increased beyond the threshold, however, the optimal temperature is found to abruptly drop to zero.

Unification of Dark Matter and Dark Energy in a Modified Entropic Force Model

In Verlinde's entropic force scenario of gravity, Newton's laws and Einstein equations can be obtained from the first pinciples and general assumptions. However, the equipartition law of energy is invalid at very low temperatures. We show clearly that the threshold of the equipartition law of energy is related with horizon of the universe. Thus, a one-dimension Debye (ODD) model in the direction of radius of the modified entropic force (MEF) maybe suitable in description of the accelerated expanding universe. We present a Friedmann cosmic dynamical model in the ODD-MEF framework. We examine carefully constraints on the ODD-MEF model from the Union2 compilation of the Supernova Cosmology Project (SCP) collaboration, the data from the observation of the large-scale structure (LSS) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB), i.e. SNe Ia+LSS+CMB. The combined numerical analysis gives the best-fit value of the model parameters $ζ\simeq10^{-9}$ and $Ω_{m0}=0.224$, with $χ_{min}^2=591.156$. The corresponding age of the universe agrees with the result of D. Spergel {\it et al.}\cite{Spergel2003} at 95% confidence level. The numerical result also yields an accelerated expanding universe without invoking any kind of dark energy. Taking $ζ(\equiv 2πω_D/H_0)$ as a running parameter associated with the structure scale $r$, we obtain a possible unified scenario of the asymptotic flatness of the radial velocity dispersion of spiral galaxies, the accelerated expanding universe and the Pioneer 10/11 anomaly in the entropic force framework of Verlinde.

Symmetry and special relativity in Finsler spacetime with constant curvature

Within the framework of projective geometry, we investigate kinematics and symmetry in $(α,β)$ spacetime-one special types of Finsler spacetime. The projectively flat $(α,β)$ spacetime with constant flag curvature is divided into four types. The symmetry in type A-Riemann spacetime with constant sectional curvature is just the one in de Sitter special relativity. The symmetry in type B-locally Minkowski spacetime is just the one in very special relativity. It is found that type C-Funk spacetime and type D-scaled Berwald's metric spacetime both possess the Lorentz group as its isometric group. The geodesic equation, algebra and dispersion relation in the $(α,β)$ spacetime are given. The corresponding invariant special relativity in the four types of $(α,β)$ spacetime contain two parameters-the speed of light and a geometrical parameter which may relate to the new physical scale. They all reduce to Einstein's special relativity while the geometrical parameter vanishes.

A possible scenario of the Pioneer anomaly in the framework of Finsler geometry

The weak field approximation of geodesics in Randers-Finsler space is investigated. We show that a Finsler structure of Randers space corresponds to the constant and sunward anomalous acceleration demonstrated by the Pioneer 10 and 11 data. The additional term in the geodesic equation acts as "electric force", which provides the anomalous acceleration.

Reply to Sergiu I. Vacaru's "Critical remarks on Finsler modifications of gravity and cosmology by Zhe Chang and Xin Li"

This is our reply to "Critical remarks on Finslerian modifications of gravity and cosmology by Zhe Chang and Xin Li", Sergiu I. Vacaru, Phys. Lett. B 690 (2010) 224. It is pointed out that the Finslerian modifications of gravity and cosmology (Zhe Chang and Xin Li, Phys. Lett. B 676 (2009) 173; {\it ibid} 668 (2008) 453) is a suggestion on the generalization of Einstein's gravity and cosmology, but not a proof for theorems in geometry. False or true of the theory should be tested by experiments or observations. We show that the arguments of Sergiu I. Vacaru were based a wrong logic. A personal claim can not be used to prove any other theory be wrong. To get the claim: {\it "we may construct more "standard" physical Finsler classical/quantum gravity theories for metric compatible connections like the Cartan d-connection"}, Sergiu I. Vacaru should complete a consistent presentation at least. We suggest Sergiu I. Vacaru to make some predictions on gravity and cosmoligy using his {\it "standard" physical Finsler classical/quantum gravity theories} as we did, and compare them with astronomical observations. By the way, we should say that it is still really far from a theory of quantum gravity.

Possible quantum gravity effects on the gravitational deflection of light

We investigate possible quantum gravity (QG) effects on the gravitational deflection of light. Two forms of deformation of the Schwarzschild spacetime are proposed. The first ansatz is a given Finslerian line element, it could be regarded as a weak QG effect on the Schwarzschild spacetime. Starting from this ansatz, we deduce the deflection angle of the light ray which passes a weak gravitational source. The second ansatz could be regarded as a strong QG effect on the Schwarzschild spacetime. The deflection angle of the light ray which passes a weak gravitational source is deduced in this Riemannian spacetime. This QG effect may distinguish the mixed light rays in the absence of gravitational source by a "spectroscope" (the gravitational source). The solutions of gravitational field equation in this Riemannian spacetime indicate that the QG effect could be regarded as the vacuum energy and the energy density of vacuum is related to the spacetime deformation parameter.

Debye entropic force and modified Newtonian dynamics

Verlinde has suggested that the gravity has an entropic origin, and a gravitational system could be regarded as a thermodynamical system. It is well-known that the equipartition law of energy is invalid at very low temperature. Therefore, entropic force should be modified while the temperature of the holographic screen is very low. It is shown that the modified entropic force is proportional to the square of the acceleration, while the temperature of the holographic screen is much lower than the Debye temperature $T_D$. The modified entropic force returns to the Newton's law of gravitation while the temperature of the holographic screen is much higher than the Debye temperature. The modified entropic force is connected with modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). The constant $a_0$ involved in MOND is linear in the Debye frequency $ω_D$, which can be regarded as the largest frequency of the bits in screen. We find that there do have a strong connection between MOND and cosmology in the framework of Verlinde's entropic force, if the holographic screen is taken to be bound of the Universe. The Debye frequency is linear in the Hubble constant $H_0$.

A matter dominated navigation Universe in accordance with the Type Ia supernova data

We investigate a matter dominated navigation cosmological model. The influence of a possible drift (wind) in the navigation cosmological model makes the spacetime geometry change from Riemannian to Finslerian. The evolution of the Finslerian Universe is governed by the same gravitational field equation with the familiar Friedmann-Robertson-Walker one. However, the change of space geometry from Riemannian to Finslerian supplies us a new relation between the luminosity distant and redshift. It is shown that the Hubble diagram based on this new relation could account for the observations on distant Type Ia supernovae.

Isometric group of $(α,β)$-type Finsler space and the symmetry of Very Special Relativity

The Killing equation for a general Finsler space is set up. It is showed that the Killing equation of $(α,β)$ space can be divided into two parts. One is the same with Killing equation of a Riemannian metric, another equation can be regarded as a constraint. The solutions of Killing equations present explicitly the isometric symmetry of Finsler space. We find that the isometric group of a special case of $(α,β)$ space is the same with the symmetry of Very Special Relativity (VSR). The Killing vectors of Finsler-Funk space are given. Unlike Riemannian constant curvature space, the 4 dimensional Funk space with constant curvature just have 6 independent Killing vectors.

Dynamics of entanglement in the transverse Ising model

We study the evolution of nearest-neighbor entanglement in the one dimensional Ising model with an external transverse field. The system is initialized as the so called "thermal ground state" of the pure Ising model. We analyze properties of generation of entanglement for different regions of external transverse fields. We find that the derivation of the time at which the entanglement reaches its first maximum with respect to the reciprocal transverse field has a minimum at the critical point. This is a new indicator of quantum phase transition.

Modified Friedmann model in Randers-Finsler space of approximate Berwald type as a possible alternative to dark energy hypothesis

Gravitational field equations in Randers-Finsler space of approximate Berwald type are investigated. A modified Friedmann model is proposed. It is showed that the accelerated expanding universe is guaranteed by a constrained Randers-Finsler structure without invoking dark energy. The geodesic in Randers-Finsler space is studied. The additional term in the geodesic equation acts as repulsive force against the gravity.

Modified Newton's gravity in Finsler Space as a possible alternative to dark matter hypothesis

A modified Newton's gravity is obtained as the weak field approximation of the Einstein's equation in Finsler space. It is found that a specified Finsler structure makes the modified Newton's gravity equivalent to the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). In the framework of Finsler geometry, the flat rotation curves of spiral galaxies can be deduced naturally without invoking dark matter.

Ultra-high energy cosmic rays threshold in Randers-Finsler space

Kinematics in Finsler space is used to study the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays particles through the cosmic microwave background radiation. We find that the GZK threshold is lifted dramatically in Randers-Finsler space. A tiny deformation of spacetime from Minkowskian to Finslerian allows more ultra-high energy cosmic rays particles arrive at the earth. It is suggested that the lower bound of particle mass is related with the negative second invariant speed in Randers-Finsler space.

Gravitational collapse without a remnant

We investigate the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric, inhomogeneous star, which is described by a perfect fluid with heat flow and satisfies the equation of state $p=ρ/3$ or $p=Cρ^\ga$ at its center. Different from the ordinary process of gravitational collapsing, the energy of the whole star is emitted into space. And the remaining spacetime is a Minkowski one at the end of the process.
