Relative permeability as a stationary process: energy fluctuations in immiscible displacement

Relative permeability is commonly used to model immiscible fluid flow through porous materials. In this work we derive the relative permeability relationship from conservation of energy, assuming that the system to be non-ergodic at large length scales and relying on averaging in both space and time to homogenize the behavior. Explicit criteria are obtained to define stationary conditions: (1) there can be no net change for extensive measures of the system state over the time averaging interval; (2) the net energy inputs into the system are zero, meaning that the net rate of work done on the system must balance with the heat removed; and (3) there is no net work performed due to the contribution of internal energy fluctuations. Results are then evaluated based on direct numerical simulation. Dynamic connectivity is observed during steady-state flow, which is quantitatively assessed based the Euler characteristic. We show that even during steady-state flow at low capillary number ($\mathsf{Ca}\sim1\times10^5$), typical flow processes will explore multiple connectivity states. The residence time for each connectivity state is captured based on the time-and-space average. The distribution for energy fluctuations is shown to be multi-modal and non-Gaussian when terms are considered independently. However, we demonstrate that their sum is zero. Given an appropriate choice of the thermodynamic driving force, we show that the conventional relative permeability relationship is sufficient to model the energy dissipation in systems with complex pore-scale dynamics that routinely alter the structure of fluid connected pathways.

Ab initio calculation of real solids via neural network ansatz

Neural networks have been applied to tackle many-body electron correlations for small molecules and physical models in recent years. Here we propose a new architecture that extends molecular neural networks with the inclusion of periodic boundary conditions to enable ab initio calculation of real solids. The accuracy of our approach is demonstrated in four different types of systems, namely the one-dimensional periodic hydrogen chain, the two-dimensional graphene, the three-dimensional lithium hydride crystal, and the homogeneous electron gas, where the obtained results, e.g. total energies, dissociation curves, and cohesive energies, outperform many traditional ab initio methods and reach the level of the most accurate approaches. Moreover, electron densities of typical systems are also calculated to provide physical intuition of various solids. Our method of extending a molecular neural network to periodic systems can be easily integrated into other neural network structures, highlighting a promising future of ab initio solution of more complex solid systems using neural network ansatz, and more generally endorsing the application of machine learning in materials simulation and condensed matter physics.

Master integrals for mixed QCD-QED corrections to charged-current Drell-Yan production of a massive charged lepton

The master integrals for the mixed QCD-QED two-loop virtual corrections to the charged-current Drell-Yan process $q\bar{q}^{\prime} \rightarrow \ell ν$ are computed analytically by using the differential equation method. A suitable choice of master integrals makes it successful to cast the differential equation system into the canonical form. We keep the dependence on charged lepton mass in the building of differential equations and then expand the system against the ratio of small charged lepton mass to large $W$-boson mass. In such a way the final results will contain large logarithms of the form $\log(m_{\ell}^2/m_W^2)$. Finally, all the canonical master integrals are given as Taylor series around $d = 4$ spacetime dimensions up to order four, with coefficients expressed in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms up to weight four.

Theory of Topological Superconductivity in Doped IV-VI Semiconductors

We theoretically study potential unconventional superconductivity in doped AB-type IV-VI semi-conductors, based on a minimal effective model with interaction up to the next-nearest neighbors. According to the experimental implications, we focus on the spin-triplet channels and obtain the superconducting phase diagram with respect to the anisotropy of the Fermi surfaces and the interaction strength. Abundant nodal and nodeless states with different symmetry breaking appear in the phase diagram, and all the states are time reversal invariant and topologically nontrivial. Specifically, the various nodal superconducting ground states, dubbed as the topological Dirac superconductors, are featured by Dirac nodes in the bulk and Majorana arcs on the surface; among the full-gap states, there exist a mirror-symmetry-protected second-order topological superconductor state favoring helical Majorana hinge cones, and different first-order topological superconductor states supporting 4 surface Majorana cones. The experimental verification of the different kinds of superconducting ground states is also discussed.

RGBD Object Tracking: An In-depth Review

RGBD object tracking is gaining momentum in computer vision research thanks to the development of depth sensors. Although numerous RGBD trackers have been proposed with promising performance, an in-depth review for comprehensive understanding of this area is lacking. In this paper, we firstly review RGBD object trackers from different perspectives, including RGBD fusion, depth usage, and tracking framework. Then, we summarize the existing datasets and the evaluation metrics. We benchmark a representative set of RGBD trackers, and give detailed analyses based on their performances. Particularly, we are the first to provide depth quality evaluation and analysis of tracking results in depth-friendly scenarios in RGBD tracking. For long-term settings in most RGBD tracking videos, we give an analysis of trackers' performance on handling target disappearance. To enable better understanding of RGBD trackers, we propose robustness evaluation against input perturbations. Finally, we summarize the challenges and provide open directions for this community. Focal and Global Knowledge Distillation for Detectors

Knowledge distillation has been applied to image classification successfully. However, object detection is much more sophisticated and most knowledge distillation methods have failed on it. In this paper, we point out that in object detection, the features of the teacher and student vary greatly in different areas, especially in the foreground and background. If we distill them equally, the uneven differences between feature maps will negatively affect the distillation. Thus, we propose Focal and Global Distillation (FGD). Focal distillation separates the foreground and background, forcing the student to focus on the teacher's critical pixels and channels. Global distillation rebuilds the relation between different pixels and transfers it from teachers to students, compensating for missing global information in focal distillation. As our method only needs to calculate the loss on the feature map, FGD can be applied to various detectors. We experiment on various detectors with different backbones and the results show that the student detector achieves excellent mAP improvement. For example, ResNet-50 based RetinaNet, Faster RCNN, RepPoints and Mask RCNN with our distillation method achieve 40.7%, 42.0%, 42.0% and 42.1% mAP on COCO2017, which are 3.3, 3.6, 3.4 and 2.9 higher than the baseline, respectively. Our codes are available at https://github.com/yzd-v/FGD.

SLOGAN: Handwriting Style Synthesis for Arbitrary-Length and Out-of-Vocabulary Text

Large amounts of labeled data are urgently required for the training of robust text recognizers. However, collecting handwriting data of diverse styles, along with an immense lexicon, is considerably expensive. Although data synthesis is a promising way to relieve data hunger, two key issues of handwriting synthesis, namely, style representation and content embedding, remain unsolved. To this end, we propose a novel method that can synthesize parameterized and controllable handwriting Styles for arbitrary-Length and Out-of-vocabulary text based on a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), termed SLOGAN. Specifically, we propose a style bank to parameterize the specific handwriting styles as latent vectors, which are input to a generator as style priors to achieve the corresponding handwritten styles. The training of the style bank requires only the writer identification of the source images, rather than attribute annotations. Moreover, we embed the text content by providing an easily obtainable printed style image, so that the diversity of the content can be flexibly achieved by changing the input printed image. Finally, the generator is guided by dual discriminators to handle both the handwriting characteristics that appear as separated characters and in a series of cursive joins. Our method can synthesize words that are not included in the training vocabulary and with various new styles. Extensive experiments have shown that high-quality text images with great style diversity and rich vocabulary can be synthesized using our method, thereby enhancing the robustness of the recognizer.

Edge Data Based Trailer Inception Probabilistic Matrix Factorization for Context-Aware Movie Recommendation

The rapid growth of edge data generated by mobile devices and applications deployed at the edge of the network has exacerbated the problem of information overload. As an effective way to alleviate information overload, recommender system can improve the quality of various services by adding application data generated by users on edge devices, such as visual and textual information, on the basis of sparse rating data. The visual information in the movie trailer is a significant part of the movie recommender system. However, due to the complexity of visual information extraction, data sparsity cannot be remarkably alleviated by merely using the rough visual features to improve the rating prediction accuracy. Fortunately, the convolutional neural network can be used to extract the visual features precisely. Therefore, the end-to-end neural image caption (NIC) model can be utilized to obtain the textual information describing the visual features of movie trailers. This paper proposes a trailer inception probabilistic matrix factorization model called Ti-PMF, which combines NIC, recurrent convolutional neural network, and probabilistic matrix factorization models as the rating prediction model. We implement the proposed Ti-PMF model with extensive experiments on three real-world datasets to validate its effectiveness. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed Ti-PMF outperforms the existing ones.

VRConvMF: Visual Recurrent Convolutional Matrix Factorization for Movie Recommendation

Sparsity of user-to-item rating data becomes one of challenging issues in the recommender systems, which severely deteriorates the recommendation performance. Fortunately, context-aware recommender systems can alleviate the sparsity problem by making use of some auxiliary information, such as the information of both the users and items. In particular, the visual information of items, such as the movie poster, can be considered as the supplement for item description documents, which helps to obtain more item features. In this paper, we focus on movie recommender system and propose a probabilistic matrix factorization based recommendation scheme called visual recurrent convolutional matrix factorization (VRConvMF), which utilizes the textual and multi-level visual features extracted from the descriptive texts and posters respectively. We implement the proposed VRConvMF and conduct extensive experiments on three commonly used real world datasets to validate its effectiveness. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed VRConvMF outperforms the existing schemes.

MSCET: A Multi-Scenario Offloading Schedule for Biomedical Data Processing and Analysis in Cloud-Edge-Terminal Collaborative Vehicular Networks

With the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoTs), an increasing number of computation intensive or delay sensitive biomedical data processing and analysis tasks are produced in vehicles, bringing more and more challenges to the biometric monitoring of drivers. Edge computing is a new paradigm to solve these challenges by offloading tasks from the resource-limited vehicles to Edge Servers (ESs) in Road Side Units (RSUs). However, most of the traditional offloading schedules for vehicular networks concentrate on the edge, while some tasks may be too complex for ESs to process. To this end, we consider a collaborative vehicular network in which the cloud, edge and terminal can cooperate with each other to accomplish the tasks. The vehicles can offload the computation intensive tasks to the cloud to save the resource of edge. We further construct the virtual resource pool which can integrate the resource of multiple ESs since some regions may be covered by multiple RSUs. In this paper, we propose a Multi-Scenario offloading schedule for biomedical data processing and analysis in Cloud-Edge-Terminal collaborative vehicular networks called MSCET. The parameters of the proposed MSCET are optimized to maximize the system utility. We also conduct extensive simulations to evaluate the proposed MSCET and the results illustrate that MSCET outperforms other existing schedules.

The critical role of the donor polymer in the stability of high-performance non-fullerene acceptor organic solar cells

Driven by the rapid development of non-fullerene electron acceptors (NFAs), the power conversion efficiencies of organic solar cells (OSCs) have reached levels suitable for commercial applications. However, the poor operational stability of high-performance NFA OSCs is a remaining fundamental challenge that must be addressed. Whilst previous studies have primarily focused on the NFA component, we consider here the degradation pathways of both the donor and acceptor materials in the benchmark PM6:Y6 blend. Here, we show that light soaking greatly increases the energetic disorder and trap state density in PM6, with little effect on Y6. This is corroborated by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, which reveals increased recombination via trapped polarons on PM6 after light soaking. In addition, ultrafast optical spectroscopy studies on light-soaked samples show that PM6 singlet excitons are rapidly converted into interchain polaron pairs on sub-100 fs timescales; this process outcompetes electron transfer to Y6, significantly reducing the charge generation yield of the blend. We make similar observations in the parent polymer, PBDB-T, indicating that this class of donor materials, used in most high-performance OSCs to date, are intrinsically unstable to light soaking. Thus, we reveal that the donor polymer can be a further critical weak link in efficient OSC systems, whose degradation mechanism needs to be addressed collectively with NFAs.

On the Distribution of SINR for Widely Linear MMSE MIMO Systems with Rectilinear or Quasi-Rectilinear Signals

Although the widely linear least mean square error (WLMMSE) receiver has been an appealing option for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems, a statistical understanding on its pose-detection signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in detail is still missing. To this end, we consider a WLMMSE MIMO transmission system with rectilinear or quasi-rectilinear (QR) signals over the uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channel and investigate the statistical properties of its SINR for an arbitrary antenna configuration with $N_t$ transmit antennas and $N_r$ receive ones. We first derive an analytic probability density function (PDF) of the SINR in terms of the confluent hypergeometric function of the second kind, for WLMMSE MIMO systems with an arbitrary $N_r$ and $N_t=2, 3$. For a more general case in practice, i.e., $N_t>3$, we resort to the moment generating function to obtain an approximate but closed form PDF under some mild conditions, which, as expected, is more Gaussian-like as $2N_r-N_t$ increases. The so-derived PDFs are able to provide key insights into the WLMMSE MIMO receiver in terms of the outage probability, the symbol error rate, and the diversity gain, all presented in closed form. In particular, its diversity gain and the gain improvement over the conventional LMMSE one are explicitly quantified as $N_r-(N_t-1)/2$ and $(N_t-1)/2$, respectively. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations support the analysis.

A Full Second-Order Analysis of the Widely Linear MVDR Beamformer for Noncircular Signals

A full performance analysis of the widely linear (WL) minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer is introduced. While the WL MVDR is known to outperform its strictly linear counterpart, the Capon beamformer, for noncircular complex signals, the existing approaches provide limited physical insights, since they explicitly or implicitly omit the complementary second-order (SO) statistics of the output interferences and noise (IN). To this end, we exploit the full SO statistics of the output IN to introduce a full SO performance analysis framework for the WL MVDR beamformer. This makes it possible to separate the overall signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) gain of the WL MVDR beamformer w.r.t. the Capon one into the individual contributions along the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) channels. Next, by considering the reception of the unknown signal of interest (SOI) corrupted by an arbitrary number of orthogonal noncircular interferences, we further unveil the distribution of SINR gains in both the I and Q channels, and show that in almost all the spatial cases, these performance advantages are more pronounced when the SO noncircularity rate of the interferences increases. Illustrative numerical simulations are provided to support the theoretical results.

Two-loop master integrals for the single top production associated with $W$ boson

The $tW$ associated production has the second-largest cross section among three single top production channels. A complete study of NNLO QCD corrections to $tW$ production is still missing in literature. We present the calculation of part of the requisite two-loop master integrals for the process $b+g \to t+W$ at NNLO QCD. It turns out that the 80 master integrals in two families, involving up to three massive internal lines, can be expressed by Goncharov polylogarithms. The canonical differential equations that these integrals obey contain at most three square roots. By separating the canonical master integrals into groups according to their dependences on roots, we succeed in achieving optimization of final expressions, which are validated by independent numerical checks.

The emergence of cooperation from shared goals in the Systemic Sustainability Game of common pool resources

The sustainable use of common-pool resources (CPRs) is a major environmental governance challenge because of their possible over-exploitation. Research in this field has overlooked the feedback between user decisions and resource dynamics. Here we develop an online game to perform a set of experiments in which users of the same CPR decide on their individual harvesting rates, which in turn depend on the resource dynamics. We show that, if users share common goals, a high level of self-organized cooperation emerges, leading to long-term resource sustainability. Otherwise, selfish/individualistic behaviors lead to resource depletion ("Tragedy of the Commons"). To explain these results, we develop an analytical model of coupled resource-decision dynamics based on optimal control theory and show how this framework reproduces the empirical results.

Joint Multi-Dimension Pruning via Numerical Gradient Update

We present joint multi-dimension pruning (abbreviated as JointPruning), an effective method of pruning a network on three crucial aspects: spatial, depth and channel simultaneously. To tackle these three naturally different dimensions, we proposed a general framework by defining pruning as seeking the best pruning vector (i.e., the numerical value of layer-wise channel number, spacial size, depth) and construct a unique mapping from the pruning vector to the pruned network structures. Then we optimize the pruning vector with gradient update and model joint pruning as a numerical gradient optimization process. To overcome the challenge that there is no explicit function between the loss and the pruning vectors, we proposed self-adapted stochastic gradient estimation to construct a gradient path through network loss to pruning vectors and enable efficient gradient update. We show that the joint strategy discovers a better status than previous studies that focused on individual dimensions solely, as our method is optimized collaboratively across the three dimensions in a single end-to-end training and it is more efficient than the previous exhaustive methods. Extensive experiments on large-scale ImageNet dataset across a variety of network architectures MobileNet V1&V2&V3 and ResNet demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. For instance, we achieve significant margins of 2.5% and 2.6% improvement over the state-of-the-art approach on the already compact MobileNet V1&V2 under an extremely large compression ratio.

Magnetic properties of the quasi two-dimensional centered honeycomb antiferromagnet GdInO$_3$

The crystal structure and magnetic property of the single crystalline hexagonal rare-earth indium oxides GdInO$_3$ have been studied by combing experiments and model calculations. The two inequivalent Gd$^{3+}$ ions form the centered honeycomb lattice, which consists of honeycomb and triangular sublattices. The dc magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements suggest two antiferromagnetic phase transitions at $T_\textrm{N1}$ = 2.3 K and $T_\textrm{N2}$ = 1.02 K. An inflection point is observed in the isothermal magnetization curve, which implies an up-up-down phase with a 1/3 magnetization plateau. We also observe a large magnetic entropy change originated from the magnetic frustration in GdInO$_3$. By considering a classical spin Hamiltonian, we establish the ground state phase diagram, which suggests that GdInO$_3$ has a weak easy-axis anisotropy and is close to the equilateral triangular-lattice system. The theoretical ground-state phase diagram may be used as a reference in NMR, ESR, or $μ$SR experiments in future.

Lightweight Multi-person Total Motion Capture Using Sparse Multi-view Cameras

Multi-person total motion capture is extremely challenging when it comes to handle severe occlusions, different reconstruction granularities from body to face and hands, drastically changing observation scales and fast body movements. To overcome these challenges above, we contribute a lightweight total motion capture system for multi-person interactive scenarios using only sparse multi-view cameras. By contributing a novel hand and face bootstrapping algorithm, our method is capable of efficient localization and accurate association of the hands and faces even on severe occluded occasions. We leverage both pose regression and keypoints detection methods and further propose a unified two-stage parametric fitting method for achieving pixel-aligned accuracy. Moreover, for extremely self-occluded poses and close interactions, a novel feedback mechanism is proposed to propagate the pixel-aligned reconstructions into the next frame for more accurate association. Overall, we propose the first light-weight total capture system and achieves fast, robust and accurate multi-person total motion capture performance. The results and experiments show that our method achieves more accurate results than existing methods under sparse-view setups.
