Electronic Correlations and Evolution of the Charge-Density Wave in the Kagome Metals $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs)

The kagome metals $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) have attracted enormous interest as they exhibit intertwined charge-density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. The alkali-metal dependence of these characteristics contains pivotal information about the CDW and its interplay with superconductivity. Here, we report optical studies of $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ across the whole family. With increasing alkali-metal atom radius from K to Cs, the CDW gap increases monotonically, whereas $T_{\text{CDW}}$ first rises and then drops, at variance with conventional CDW. While the Fermi surface gapped by the CDW grows, $T_{c}$ is elevated in CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$, indicating that the interplay between the CDW and superconductivity is not simply a competition for the density of states near \EF. More importantly, we observe an enhancement of electronic correlations in CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$, which suppresses the CDW but enhances superconductivity, thus accounting for the above peculiar observations. Our results suggest electronic correlations as an important factor in manipulating the CDW and its entanglement with superconductivity in $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$.

What Matters for 3D Scene Flow Network

3D scene flow estimation from point clouds is a low-level 3D motion perception task in computer vision. Flow embedding is a commonly used technique in scene flow estimation, and it encodes the point motion between two consecutive frames. Thus, it is critical for the flow embeddings to capture the correct overall direction of the motion. However, previous works only search locally to determine a soft correspondence, ignoring the distant points that turn out to be the actual matching ones. In addition, the estimated correspondence is usually from the forward direction of the adjacent point clouds, and may not be consistent with the estimated correspondence acquired from the backward direction. To tackle these problems, we propose a novel all-to-all flow embedding layer with backward reliability validation during the initial scene flow estimation. Besides, we investigate and compare several design choices in key components of the 3D scene flow network, including the point similarity calculation, input elements of predictor, and predictor & refinement level design. After carefully choosing the most effective designs, we are able to present a model that achieves the state-of-the-art performance on FlyingThings3D and KITTI Scene Flow datasets. Our proposed model surpasses all existing methods by at least 38.2% on FlyingThings3D dataset and 24.7% on KITTI Scene Flow dataset for EPE3D metric. We release our codes at https://github.com/IRMVLab/3DFlow.

Private Language Model Adaptation for Speech Recognition

Speech model adaptation is crucial to handle the discrepancy between server-side proxy training data and actual data received on local devices of users. With the use of federated learning (FL), we introduce an efficient approach on continuously adapting neural network language models (NNLMs) on private devices with applications on automatic speech recognition (ASR). To address the potential speech transcription errors in the on-device training corpus, we perform empirical studies on comparing various strategies of leveraging token-level confidence scores to improve the NNLM quality in the FL settings. Experiments show that compared with no model adaptation, the proposed method achieves relative 2.6% and 10.8% word error rate (WER) reductions on two speech evaluation datasets, respectively. We also provide analysis in evaluating privacy guarantees of our presented procedure.

3D Hierarchical Refinement and Augmentation for Unsupervised Learning of Depth and Pose from Monocular Video

Depth and ego-motion estimations are essential for the localization and navigation of autonomous robots and autonomous driving. Recent studies make it possible to learn the per-pixel depth and ego-motion from the unlabeled monocular video. A novel unsupervised training framework is proposed with 3D hierarchical refinement and augmentation using explicit 3D geometry. In this framework, the depth and pose estimations are hierarchically and mutually coupled to refine the estimated pose layer by layer. The intermediate view image is proposed and synthesized by warping the pixels in an image with the estimated depth and coarse pose. Then, the residual pose transformation can be estimated from the new view image and the image of the adjacent frame to refine the coarse pose. The iterative refinement is implemented in a differentiable manner in this paper, making the whole framework optimized uniformly. Meanwhile, a new image augmentation method is proposed for the pose estimation by synthesizing a new view image, which creatively augments the pose in 3D space but gets a new augmented 2D image. The experiments on KITTI demonstrate that our depth estimation achieves state-of-the-art performance and even surpasses recent approaches that utilize other auxiliary tasks. Our visual odometry outperforms all recent unsupervised monocular learning-based methods and achieves competitive performance to the geometry-based method, ORB-SLAM2 with back-end optimization.

SparseDet: Towards End-to-End 3D Object Detection

In this paper, we propose SparseDet for end-to-end 3D object detection from point cloud. Existing works on 3D object detection rely on dense object candidates over all locations in a 3D or 2D grid following the mainstream methods for object detection in 2D images. However, this dense paradigm requires expertise in data to fulfill the gap between label and detection. As a new detection paradigm, SparseDet maintains a fixed set of learnable proposals to represent latent candidates and directly perform classification and localization for 3D objects through stacked transformers. It demonstrates that effective 3D object detection can be achieved with none of post-processing such as redundant removal and non-maximum suppression. With a properly designed network, SparseDet achieves highly competitive detection accuracy while running with a more efficient speed of 34.5 FPS. We believe this end-to-end paradigm of SparseDet will inspire new thinking on the sparsity of 3D object detection.

Nighthawk: Fully Automated Localizing UI Display Issues via Visual Understanding

Graphical User Interface (GUI) provides a visual bridge between a software application and end users, through which they can interact with each other. With the upgrading of mobile devices and the development of aesthetics, the visual effects of the GUI are more and more attracting, and users pay more attention to the accessibility and usability of applications. However, such GUI complexity posts a great challenge to the GUI implementation. According to our pilot study of crowdtesting bug reports, display issues such as text overlap, component occlusion, missing image always occur during GUI rendering on different devices due to the software or hardware compatibility. They negatively influence the app usability, resulting in poor user experience. To detect these issues, we propose a fully automated approach, Nighthawk, based on deep learning for modelling visual information of the GUI screenshot. Nighthawk can detect GUIs with display issues and also locate the detailed region of the issue in the given GUI for guiding developers to fix the bug. At the same time, training the model needs a large amount of labeled buggy screenshots, which requires considerable manual effort to prepare them. We therefore propose a heuristic-based training data auto-generation method to automatically generate the labeled training data. The evaluation demonstrates that our Nighthawk can achieve average 0.84 precision and 0.84 recall in detecting UI display issues, average 0.59 AP and 0.60 AR in localizing these issues. We also evaluate Nighthawk with popular Android apps on Google Play and F-Droid, and successfully uncover 151 previously-undetected UI display issues with 75 of them being confirmed or fixed so far.

NaviDroid: A Tool for Guiding Manual Android Testing via Hint Moves

Manual testing, as a complement to automated GUI testing, is the last line of defense for app quality especially in spotting usability and accessibility issues. However, the repeated actions and easy missing of some functionalities make manual testing time-consuming, labor-extensive and inefficient. Inspired by the game candy crush with flashy candies as hint moves for players, we develop a tool named NaviDroid for navigating human testers via highlighted next operations for more effective and efficient testing. Within NaviDroid, it constructs an enriched state transition graph (STG) with the trigger actions as the edges for two involved states. Based on the STG, NaviDroid utilizes the dynamic programming algorithm to plan the exploration path, and augment the run-time GUI with visualized hint moves for testers to quickly explore untested states and avoid duplication. The automated experiments demonstrate the high coverage and efficient path planning of NaviDroid. A user study further confirms its usefulness in the participants covering more states and activities, detecting more bugs within less time compared with the control group. A Survey of Trustworthy Graph Learning: Reliability, Explainability, and Privacy Protection

Deep graph learning has achieved remarkable progresses in both business and scientific areas ranging from finance and e-commerce, to drug and advanced material discovery. Despite these progresses, how to ensure various deep graph learning algorithms behave in a socially responsible manner and meet regulatory compliance requirements becomes an emerging problem, especially in risk-sensitive domains. Trustworthy graph learning (TwGL) aims to solve the above problems from a technical viewpoint. In contrast to conventional graph learning research which mainly cares about model performance, TwGL considers various reliability and safety aspects of the graph learning framework including but not limited to robustness, explainability, and privacy. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive review of recent leading approaches in the TwGL field from three dimensions, namely, reliability, explainability, and privacy protection. We give a general categorization for existing work and review typical work for each category. To give further insights for TwGL research, we provide a unified view to inspect previous works and build the connection between them. We also point out some important open problems remaining to be solved in the future developments of TwGL.

Emergence of Double-slit Interference by Representing Visual Space in Artificial Neural Networks

Artificial neural networks have realized incredible successes at image recognition, but the underlying mechanism of visual space representation remains a huge mystery. Grid cells (2014 Nobel Prize) in the entorhinal cortex support a periodic representation as a metric for coding space. Here, we develop a self-supervised convolutional neural network to perform visual space location, leading to the emergence of single-slit diffraction and double-slit interference patterns of waves. Our discoveries reveal the nature of CNN encoding visual space to a certain extent. CNN is no longer a black box in terms of visual spatial encoding, it is interpretable. Our findings indicate that the periodicity property of waves provides a space metric, suggesting a general role of spatial coordinate frame in artificial neural networks.

Side-aware Meta-Learning for Cross-Dataset Listener Diagnosis with Subjective Tinnitus

With the development of digital technology, machine learning has paved the way for the next generation of tinnitus diagnoses. Although machine learning has been widely applied in EEG-based tinnitus analysis, most current models are dataset-specific. Each dataset may be limited to a specific range of symptoms, overall disease severity, and demographic attributes; further, dataset formats may differ, impacting model performance. This paper proposes a side-aware meta-learning for cross-dataset tinnitus diagnosis, which can effectively classify tinnitus in subjects of divergent ages and genders from different data collection processes. Owing to the superiority of meta-learning, our method does not rely on large-scale datasets like conventional deep learning models. Moreover, we design a subject-specific training process to assist the model in fitting the data pattern of different patients or healthy people. Our method achieves a high accuracy of 73.8\% in the cross-dataset classification. We conduct an extensive analysis to show the effectiveness of side information of ears in enhancing model performance and side-aware meta-learning in improving the quality of the learned features.

CONet: Channel Optimization for Convolutional Neural Networks

Neural Architecture Search (NAS) has shifted network design from using human intuition to leveraging search algorithms guided by evaluation metrics. We study channel size optimization in convolutional neural networks (CNN) and identify the role it plays in model accuracy and complexity. Current channel size selection methods are generally limited by discrete sample spaces while suffering from manual iteration and simple heuristics. To solve this, we introduce an efficient dynamic scaling algorithm -- CONet -- that automatically optimizes channel sizes across network layers for a given CNN. Two metrics -- "\textit{Rank}" and "\textit{Rank Average Slope}" -- are introduced to identify the information accumulated in training. The algorithm dynamically scales channel sizes up or down over a fixed searching phase. We conduct experiments on CIFAR10/100 and ImageNet datasets and show that CONet can find efficient and accurate architectures searched in ResNet, DARTS, and DARTS+ spaces that outperform their baseline models. This document supersedes previously published paper in ICCV2021-NeurArch workshop. An additional section is included on manual scaling of channel size in CNNs to numerically validate of the metrics used in searching optimum channel configurations in CNNs.

FedSynth: Gradient Compression via Synthetic Data in Federated Learning

Model compression is important in federated learning (FL) with large models to reduce communication cost. Prior works have been focusing on sparsification based compression that could desparately affect the global model accuracy. In this work, we propose a new scheme for upstream communication where instead of transmitting the model update, each client learns and transmits a light-weight synthetic dataset such that using it as the training data, the model performs similarly well on the real training data. The server will recover the local model update via the synthetic data and apply standard aggregation. We then provide a new algorithm FedSynth to learn the synthetic data locally. Empirically, we find our method is comparable/better than random masking baselines in all three common federated learning benchmark datasets.

Machine Learning with Knowledge Constraints for Process Optimization of Open-Air Perovskite Solar Cell Manufacturing

Perovskite photovoltaics (PV) have achieved rapid development in the past decade in terms of power conversion efficiency of small-area lab-scale devices; however, successful commercialization still requires further development of low-cost, scalable, and high-throughput manufacturing techniques. One of the critical challenges of developing a new fabrication technique is the high-dimensional parameter space for optimization, but machine learning (ML) can readily be used to accelerate perovskite PV scaling. Herein, we present an ML-guided framework of sequential learning for manufacturing process optimization. We apply our methodology to the Rapid Spray Plasma Processing (RSPP) technique for perovskite thin films in ambient conditions. With a limited experimental budget of screening 100 process conditions, we demonstrated an efficiency improvement to 18.5% as the best-in-our-lab device fabricated by RSPP, and we also experimentally found 10 unique process conditions to produce the top-performing devices of more than 17% efficiency, which is 5 times higher rate of success than the control experiments with pseudo-random Latin hypercube sampling. Our model is enabled by three innovations: (a) flexible knowledge transfer between experimental processes by incorporating data from prior experimental data as a probabilistic constraint; (b) incorporation of both subjective human observations and ML insights when selecting next experiments; (c) adaptive strategy of locating the region of interest using Bayesian optimization first, and then conducting local exploration for high-efficiency devices. Furthermore, in virtual benchmarking, our framework achieves faster improvements with limited experimental budgets than traditional design-of-experiments methods (e.g., one-variable-at-a-time sampling).

Where are the hidden-charm hexaquarks?

In this work, we carry out the study of hidden-charm hexaquark states with the typical configurations $qqc\bar{q}\bar{q}\bar{c}$ ($q=u, d, s$). The mass spectra of hidden-charm hexaquark states are obtained within the chromo-magnetic interaction model. In addition to the mass spectra analysis, we further illustrate their two-body strong decay behaviors. There exist some compact bound states which cannot decay through the strong interaction. Hopefully our results will help to search for such types of the exotic states in the future experiments.

Neural-FST Class Language Model for End-to-End Speech Recognition

We propose Neural-FST Class Language Model (NFCLM) for end-to-end speech recognition, a novel method that combines neural network language models (NNLMs) and finite state transducers (FSTs) in a mathematically consistent framework. Our method utilizes a background NNLM which models generic background text together with a collection of domain-specific entities modeled as individual FSTs. Each output token is generated by a mixture of these components; the mixture weights are estimated with a separately trained neural decider. We show that NFCLM significantly outperforms NNLM by 15.8% relative in terms of Word Error Rate. NFCLM achieves similar performance as traditional NNLM and FST shallow fusion while being less prone to overbiasing and 12 times more compact, making it more suitable for on-device usage.

Attribute-Modulated Generative Meta Learning for Zero-Shot Classification

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) aims to transfer knowledge from seen classes to semantically related unseen classes, which are absent during training. The promising strategies for ZSL are to synthesize visual features of unseen classes conditioned on semantic side information and to incorporate meta-learning to eliminate the model's inherent bias towards seen classes. While existing meta generative approaches pursue a common model shared across task distributions, we aim to construct a generative network adaptive to task characteristics. To this end, we propose an Attribute-Modulated generAtive meta-model for Zero-shot learning (AMAZ). Our model consists of an attribute-aware modulation network, an attribute-augmented generative network, and an attribute-weighted classifier. Given unseen classes, the modulation network adaptively modulates the generator by applying task-specific transformations so that the generative network can adapt to highly diverse tasks. The weighted classifier utilizes the data quality to enhance the training procedure, further improving the model performance. Our empirical evaluations on four widely-used benchmarks show that AMAZ outperforms state-of-the-art methods by 3.8% and 3.1% in ZSL and generalized ZSL settings, respectively, demonstrating the superiority of our method. Our experiments on a zero-shot image retrieval task show AMAZ's ability to synthesize instances that portray real visual characteristics.

PRA-Net: Point Relation-Aware Network for 3D Point Cloud Analysis

Learning intra-region contexts and inter-region relations are two effective strategies to strengthen feature representations for point cloud analysis. However, unifying the two strategies for point cloud representation is not fully emphasized in existing methods. To this end, we propose a novel framework named Point Relation-Aware Network (PRA-Net), which is composed of an Intra-region Structure Learning (ISL) module and an Inter-region Relation Learning (IRL) module. The ISL module can dynamically integrate the local structural information into the point features, while the IRL module captures inter-region relations adaptively and efficiently via a differentiable region partition scheme and a representative point-based strategy. Extensive experiments on several 3D benchmarks covering shape classification, keypoint estimation, and part segmentation have verified the effectiveness and the generalization ability of PRA-Net. Code will be available at https://github.com/XiwuChen/PRA-Net .
