Bidirectional Prototype-Reward co-Evolution for Test-Time Adaptation of Vision-Language Models

Test-time adaptation (TTA) is crucial in maintaining performance of Vision Language Models (VLMs) when facing distribution shifts, particularly when the source data or target labels are inaccessible. Existing TTA methods predominantly leverage the output probability distribution of CLIP for feature evaluation, resulting in biases under domain shifts, which cause misclassified features due to text priors or incorrect textual associations. To address these issues, we propose \underline{B}idirectional Prototype-Reward co-Evolution (BPRE), a novel VLMs framework with TTA that integrates feature quality assessment with prototype evolution via a synergistic feedback loop. First, the Multi-dimensional Quality-aware Reward Module (MQRM) is designed to evaluate feature quality and guide prototype refinement precisely. The continuous refinement of prototype quality via Prototype-Reward Interactive Evolution (PRIE) enhances the computation more robust. Through this bidirectional interaction, the precision of rewards and prototype evolution mutually reinforce each other, forming a self-evolving feedback cycle. Extensive experiments conducted on 15 diverse recognition datasets demonstrate that our model consistently achieves superior performance compared to other SOTA methods, and advances VLM generalization capabilities through emphasizing comprehensive feature evaluation.

Unconventional band splitting of CeSb in the devil's staircase transition

The interplay between magnetism and electronic band structure is a central theme in condensed matter physics. CeSb, with its complex devil's staircase antiferromagnetic transition, offers a unique opportunity to explore this interplay. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we investigate the electronic structure evolution across the devil's staircase transition. Upon entering the antiferromagnetic phase, we observe an intriguing band splitting of the electron pocket around the X point. The energy separation between the split bands changes abruptly with temperature, consistent with the characteristics of the first-order phase transition. However, their respective spectral weights behave gradually with temperature. Combined with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we suggest that this atypical behavior deviates from conventional magnetically induced band splitting and potentially arises from the intricate modulation of paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers within the devil's staircase transition. Our results provide insights into the complex relationship between electronic structure and magnetism in correlated electron systems.

Tropical Fock-Goncharov coordinates for $\mathrm{SL}_3$-webs on surfaces II: naturality

In a companion paper (arXiv 2011.01768), we constructed nonnegative integer coordinates $Φ_\mathscr{T}(\mathscr{W}_{3, \hat{S}}) \subset \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^N$ for the collection $\mathscr{W}_{3, \hat{S}}$ of reduced $\mathrm{SL}_3$-webs on a finite-type punctured surface $\hat{S}$, depending on an ideal triangulation $\mathscr{T}$ of $\hat{S}$. We show that these coordinates are natural with respect to the choice of triangulation, in the sense that if a different triangulation $\mathscr{T}^\prime$ is chosen, then the coordinate change map relating $Φ_\mathscr{T}(\mathscr{W}_{3, \hat{S}})$ to $Φ_{\mathscr{T}^\prime}(\mathscr{W}_{3, \hat{S}})$ is a tropical $\mathcal{A}$-coordinate cluster transformation. We can therefore view the webs $\mathscr{W}_{3, \hat{S}}$ as a concrete topological model for the Fock-Goncharov-Shen positive integer tropical points $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{PGL}_3, \hat{S}}^+(\mathbb{Z}^t)$.

Learning Long Short-Term Intention within Human Daily Behaviors

In the domain of autonomous household robots, it is of utmost importance for robots to understand human behaviors and provide appropriate services. This requires the robots to possess the capability to analyze complex human behaviors and predict the true intentions of humans. Traditionally, humans are perceived as flawless, with their decisions acting as the standards that robots should strive to align with. However, this raises a pertinent question: What if humans make mistakes? In this research, we present a unique task, termed "long short-term intention prediction". This task requires robots can predict the long-term intention of humans, which aligns with human values, and the short term intention of humans, which reflects the immediate action intention. Meanwhile, the robots need to detect the potential non-consistency between the short-term and long-term intentions, and provide necessary warnings and suggestions. To facilitate this task, we propose a long short-term intention model to represent the complex intention states, and build a dataset to train this intention model. Then we propose a two-stage method to integrate the intention model for robots: i) predicting human intentions of both value-based long-term intentions and action-based short-term intentions; and 2) analyzing the consistency between the long-term and short-term intentions. Experimental results indicate that the proposed long short-term intention model can assist robots in comprehending human behavioral patterns over both long-term and short-term durations, which helps determine the consistency between long-term and short-term intentions of humans.

Ultrafast photoinduced phase transition in the antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetal EuAgAs

We report the observation of a light-induced subpicosecond phase transition in the antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetal EuAgAs, achieved through ultrafast optical excitation. Using ultrafast optical spectroscopy, we probe the nonequilibrium carrier dynamics, discovering distinct fluence-dependent responses in the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic states, and revealing a possible magnetic order-driven transition between different topological states. Our results demonstrate that EuAgAs, with its highly tunable magnetic structure, possibly offers a unique platform for exploring topological phase transitions. These results underscore the potential of ultrashort optical pulses as powerful tools for the real-time control of topological phases, opening pathways for advances in spintronics, quantum computing, and energy-efficient information technologies.

Large model enhanced computational ghost imaging

Ghost imaging (GI) achieves 2D image reconstruction through high-order correlation of 1D bucket signals and 2D light field information, particularly demonstrating enhanced detection sensitivity and high-quality image reconstruction via efficient photon collection in scattering media. Recent investigations have established that deep learning (DL) can substantially enhance the ghost imaging reconstruction quality. Furthermore, with the emergence of large models like SDXL, GPT-4, etc., the constraints of conventional DL in parameters and architecture have been transcended, enabling models to comprehensively explore relationships among all distinct positions within feature sequences. This paradigm shift has significantly advanced the capability of DL in restoring severely degraded and low-resolution imagery, making it particularly advantageous for noise-robust image reconstruction in GI applications. In this paper, we propose the first large imaging model with 1.4 billion parameters that incorporates the physical principles of GI (GILM). The proposed GILM implements a skip connection mechanism to mitigate gradient explosion challenges inherent in deep architectures, ensuring sufficient parametric capacity to capture intricate correlations among object single-pixel measurements. Moreover, GILM leverages multi-head attention mechanism to learn spatial dependencies across pixel points during image reconstruction, facilitating the extraction of comprehensive object information for subsequent reconstruction. We validated the effectiveness of GILM through a series of experiments, including simulated object imaging, imaging objects in free space, and imaging object located 52 meters away in underwater environment. The experimental results show that GILM effectively analyzes the fluctuation trends of the collected signals, thereby optimizing the recovery of the object's image from the acquired data.

Short-time Variational Mode Decomposition

Variational mode decomposition (VMD) and its extensions like Multivariate VMD (MVMD) decompose signals into ensembles of band-limited modes with narrow central frequencies. These methods utilize Fourier transformations to shift signals between time and frequency domains. However, since Fourier transformations span the entire time-domain signal, they are suboptimal for non-stationary time series. We introduce Short-Time Variational Mode Decomposition (STVMD), an innovative extension of the VMD algorithm that incorporates the Short-Time Fourier transform (STFT) to minimize the impact of local disturbances. STVMD segments signals into short time windows, converting these segments into the frequency domain. It then formulates a variational optimization problem to extract band-limited modes representing the windowed data. The optimization aims to minimize the sum of the bandwidths of these modes across the windowed data, extending the cost functions used in VMD and MVMD. Solutions are derived using the alternating direction method of multipliers, ensuring the extraction of modes with narrow bandwidths. STVMD is divided into dynamic and non-dynamic types, depending on whether the central frequencies vary with time. Our experiments show that non-dynamic STVMD is comparable to VMD with properly sized time windows, while dynamic STVMD better accommodates non-stationary signals, evidenced by reduced mode function errors and tracking of dynamic central frequencies. This effectiveness is validated by steady-state visual-evoked potentials in electroencephalogram signals.

MERIT: Multimodal Wearable Vital Sign Waveform Monitoring

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and premature mortality worldwide, with occupational environments significantly influencing CVD risk, underscoring the need for effective cardiac monitoring and early warning systems. Existing methods of monitoring vital signs require subjects to remain stationary, which is impractical for daily monitoring as individuals are often in motion. To address this limitation, we propose MERIT, a multimodality-based wearable system designed for precise ECG waveform monitoring without movement restrictions. Daily activities, involving frequent arm movements, can significantly affect sensor data and complicate the reconstruction of accurate ECG signals. To mitigate motion impact and enhance ECG signal reconstruction, we introduce a deep independent component analysis (Deep-ICA) module and a multimodal fusion module. We conducted experiments with 15 subjects. Our results, compared with commercial wearable devices and existing methods, demonstrate that MERIT accurately reconstructs ECG waveforms during various office activities, offering a reliable solution for fine-grained cardiac monitoring in dynamic environments.

An antiferromagnetic diode effect in even-layered MnBi2Te4

In a PN junction, the separation between positive and negative charges leads to diode transport. In the past few years, the intrinsic diode transport in noncentrosymmetric polar conductors has attracted great interest, because it suggests novel nonlinear applications and provides a symmetry-sensitive probe of Fermi surface. Recently, such studies have been extended to noncentrosymmetric superconductors, realizing the superconducting diode effect. Here, we show that, even in a centrosymmetric crystal without directional charge separation, the spins of an antiferromagnet (AFM) can generate a spatial directionality, leading to an AFM diode effect. We observe large second-harmonic transport in a nonlinear electronic device enabled by the compensated AFM state of even-layered MnBi2Te4. We also report a novel electrical sum-frequency generation (SFG), which has been rarely explored in contrast to the well-known optical SFG in wide-gap insulators. We demonstrate that the AFM enables an in-plane field-effect transistor and harvesting of wireless electromagnetic energy. The electrical SFG establishes a powerful method to study nonlinear electronics built by quantum materials. The AFM diode effect paves the way for potential device concepts including AFM logic circuits, self-powered AFM spintronics, and other applications that potentially bridge nonlinear electronics with AFM spintronics.

Log-concavity of cluster algebras of type $A_n$

Okounkov [Oko03] conjectured the log-concavity about the structure constants for many interesting basis from representation theory. For the cluster algebra, Gross, Hacking, Keel, Kontsevich [GHKK18] introduced the atomic theta basis. We prove that the coefficients of the exponents of any cluster variable of type $A_n$ are log-concave. We show that the structure constants for theta basis of type $A_2$ are log-concave. As for larger generality, we conjecture that the log-concavity of the structure constants for theta basis of the cluster algebra.

Factors in Fashion: Factor Analysis towards the Mode

The modal factor model represents a new factor model for dimension reduction in high dimensional panel data. Unlike the approximate factor model that targets for the mean factors, it captures factors that influence the conditional mode of the distribution of the observables. Statistical inference is developed with the aid of mode estimation, where the modal factors and the loadings are estimated through maximizing a kernel-type objective function. An easy-to-implement alternating maximization algorithm is designed to obtain the estimators numerically. Two model selection criteria are further proposed to determine the number of factors. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are established under some regularity conditions. Simulations demonstrate the nice finite sample performance of our proposed estimators, even in the presence of heavy-tailed and asymmetric idiosyncratic error distributions. Finally, the application to inflation forecasting illustrates the practical merits of modal factors.

VQ-Flow: Taming Normalizing Flows for Multi-Class Anomaly Detection via Hierarchical Vector Quantization

Normalizing flows, a category of probabilistic models famed for their capabilities in modeling complex data distributions, have exhibited remarkable efficacy in unsupervised anomaly detection. This paper explores the potential of normalizing flows in multi-class anomaly detection, wherein the normal data is compounded with multiple classes without providing class labels. Through the integration of vector quantization (VQ), we empower the flow models to distinguish different concepts of multi-class normal data in an unsupervised manner, resulting in a novel flow-based unified method, named VQ-Flow. Specifically, our VQ-Flow leverages hierarchical vector quantization to estimate two relative codebooks: a Conceptual Prototype Codebook (CPC) for concept distinction and its concomitant Concept-Specific Pattern Codebook (CSPC) to capture concept-specific normal patterns. The flow models in VQ-Flow are conditioned on the concept-specific patterns captured in CSPC, capable of modeling specific normal patterns associated with different concepts. Moreover, CPC further enables our VQ-Flow for concept-aware distribution modeling, faithfully mimicking the intricate multi-class normal distribution through a mixed Gaussian distribution reparametrized on the conceptual prototypes. Through the introduction of vector quantization, the proposed VQ-Flow advances the state-of-the-art in multi-class anomaly detection within a unified training scheme, yielding the Det./Loc. AUROC of 99.5%/98.3% on MVTec AD. The codebase is publicly available at https://github.com/cool-xuan/vqflow.

ComKD-CLIP: Comprehensive Knowledge Distillation for Contrastive Language-Image Pre-traning Model

Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) models excel in integrating semantic information between images and text through contrastive learning techniques. It has achieved remarkable performance in various multimodal tasks. However, the deployment of large CLIP models is hindered in resource-limited environments, while smaller models frequently fail to meet the performance benchmarks required for practical applications. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, ComKD-CLIP: Comprehensive Knowledge Distillation for Contrastive Language-Image Pre-traning Model, which aims to comprehensively distill the knowledge from a large teacher CLIP model into a smaller student model, ensuring comparable performance with significantly reduced parameters. ComKD-CLIP is composed of two key mechanisms: Image Feature Alignment (IFAlign) and Educational Attention (EduAttention). IFAlign makes the image features extracted by the student model closely match those extracted by the teacher model, enabling the student to learn teacher's knowledge of extracting image features. EduAttention explores the cross-relationships between text features extracted by the teacher model and image features extracted by the student model, enabling the student model to learn how the teacher model integrates text-image features. In addition, ComKD-CLIP can refine the knowledge distilled from IFAlign and EduAttention by leveraging the text-image feature fusion results of the teacher model, ensuring the student model accurately absorbs the teacher's knowledge. Extensive experiments conducted on 11 datasets have demonstrated the superiority of the proposed method.

SentenceVAE: Enable Next-sentence Prediction for Large Language Models with Faster Speed, Higher Accuracy and Longer Context

Current large language models (LLMs) primarily utilize next-token prediction method for inference, which significantly impedes their processing speed. In this paper, we introduce a novel inference methodology termed next-sentence prediction, aiming at enhancing the inference efficiency of LLMs. We present Sentence Variational Autoencoder (SentenceVAE), which includes a Sentence Encoder to compress multiple tokens in a sentence into a single token, and a Sentence Decoder to reconstruct it. By integrating SentenceVAE into the input and output layers of LLMs, we develop Sentence-level LLMs (SLLMs) that employ a sentence-by-sentence inference method. In addition, the SentenceVAE module of SLLMs can maintain the integrity of the original semantic content by segmenting the context into sentences, thereby improving accuracy while boosting inference speed. Moreover, compared to previous LLMs, SLLMs process fewer tokens over equivalent context length, significantly reducing memory demands for self-attention computation and facilitating the handling of longer context. Extensive experiments on Wanjuan dataset have revealed that the proposed method can accelerate inference speed by 204~365%, reduce perplexity (PPL) to 46~75% of its original metric, and decrease memory overhead by 86~91% for the equivalent context length, compared to previous token-by-token methods.

Evidence of electron interaction with an unidentified bosonic mode in superconductor CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

The kink structure in band dispersion usually refers to a certain electron-boson interaction, which is crucial in understanding the pairing in unconventional superconductors. Here we report the evidence of the observation of a kink structure in Fe-based superconductor CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The kink shows an orbital selective and momentum dependent behavior, which is located at 15 meV below Fermi level along the Gamma-M direction at the band with dxz orbital character and vanishes when approaching the Gamma-X direction, correlated with a slight decrease of the superconducting gap. Most importantly, this kink structure disappears when the superconducting gap closes, indicating that the corresponding bosonic mode (9 meV) is closely related to superconductivity. However, the origin of this mode remains unidentified, since it cannot be related to phonons or the spin resonance mode (15 meV) observed by inelastic neutron scattering. The behavior of this mode is rather unique and challenges our present understanding of the superconducting paring mechanism of the bilayer FeAs-based superconductors.

Bayesian thresholded modeling for integrating brain node and network predictors

Progress in neuroscience has provided unprecedented opportunities to advance our understanding of brain alterations and their correspondence to phenotypic profiles. With data collected from various imaging techniques, studies have integrated different types of information ranging from brain structure, function, or metabolism. More recently, an emerging way to categorize imaging traits is through a metric hierarchy, including localized node-level measurements and interactive network-level metrics. However, limited research has been conducted to integrate these different hierarchies and achieve a better understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms and communications. In this work, we address this literature gap by proposing a Bayesian regression model under both vector-variate and matrix-variate predictors. To characterize the interplay between different predicting components, we propose a set of biologically plausible prior models centered on an innovative joint thresholded prior. This captures the coupling and grouping effect of signal patterns, as well as their spatial contiguity across brain anatomy. By developing a posterior inference, we can identify and quantify the uncertainty of signaling node- and network-level neuromarkers, as well as their predictive mechanism for phenotypic outcomes. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms the alternative approaches substantially in both out-of-sample prediction and feature selection. By implementing the model to study children's general mental abilities, we establish a powerful predictive mechanism based on the identified task contrast traits and resting-state sub-networks.
