PeriodicLoRA: Breaking the Low-Rank Bottleneck in LoRA Optimization

Supervised fine-tuning is the most common method to adapt large language models (LLMs) to downstream tasks, but full fine-tuning LLMs requires massive computational resources. Recently, parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) methods have been widely studied due to its cost-effectiveness. LoRA is one of the most widely used methods, which assumes that the optimization process is essentially low-dimensional. Although LoRA fine-tuning is effective, there is still a performance gap compared to full fine-tuning, since its weight update is limited to low-rank matrices. In order to break the low-rank bottleneck in LoRA Optimization, we propose PeriodicLoRA (PLoRA), which accumulates low-rank update matrices multiple times to achieve a higher update rank. PLoRA has multiple training stages. During each stage, we still update only the LoRA weights. However, at the end of each stage, we unload the LoRA weights into the backbone parameters and then reinitialize the LoRA states. Experimental results show that PLoRA has stronger learning ability, approximately 1.8 times that of LoRA's learning ability at most, but it does not increase memory usage. Further, we introduce a momentum-based unloading strategy for PLoRA to mitigate the training instability.

Can fallback accretion on magnetar model power the X-ray flares simultaneously observed with gamma-rays of Gamma-ray bursts?

The prompt emission, X-ray plateau, and X-ray flares of Gamma-ray bursts (GRB) are thought to be from internal dissipation, and the magnetar as the central engine with propeller fallback accretion is proposed to interpret the observed phenomena of GRBs. In this paper, by systematically searching for X-ray emission observed by Swift/Xry Telescope, we find that seven robust GRBs include both X-ray flares and plateau emissions with measured redshift. More interestingly, the X-ray flares/bumps for those seven GRBs are simultaneously observed in the gamma-ray band. By adopting the propeller fallback accretion model to fit the observed data, it is found that the free parameters of two GRBs (140512A and 180329B) can be constrained very well, while in the other five cases, more or less, they are not all sufficiently constrained. On the other hand, this requires that the conversion efficiency of the propeller is to be two or three times higher than that of the spindown dipole radiation of the magnetar. If this is the case, it is contradictory to the expectation from the propeller model: namely, a dirtier ejecta should be less efficient in producing gamma-ray emissions. Our results hint that at least the magnetar central engine with propeller fallback accretion model cannot interpret very well both the GRB X-ray flares simultaneously observed in the gamma-ray band and the X-ray flares of GRBs with a high Lorentz factor.

Improving the Accuracy and Interpretability of Neural Networks for Wind Power Forecasting

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are receiving increasing attention in wind power forecasting due to their ability to effectively capture complex patterns in wind data. However, their forecasted errors are severely limited by the local optimal weight issue in optimization algorithms, and their forecasted behavior also lacks interpretability. To address these two challenges, this paper firstly proposes simple but effective triple optimization strategies (TriOpts) to accelerate the training process and improve the model performance of DNNs in wind power forecasting. Then, permutation feature importance (PFI) and local interpretable model-agnostic explanation (LIME) techniques are innovatively presented to interpret forecasted behaviors of DNNs, from global and instance perspectives. Simulation results show that the proposed TriOpts not only drastically improve the model generalization of DNNs for both the deterministic and probabilistic wind power forecasting, but also accelerate the training process. Besides, the proposed PFI and LIME techniques can accurately estimate the contribution of each feature to wind power forecasting, which helps to construct feature engineering and understand how to obtain forecasted values for a given sample.

On the Opportunities of Green Computing: A Survey

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has achieved significant advancements in technology and research with the development over several decades, and is widely used in many areas including computing vision, natural language processing, time-series analysis, speech synthesis, etc. During the age of deep learning, especially with the arise of Large Language Models, a large majority of researchers' attention is paid on pursuing new state-of-the-art (SOTA) results, resulting in ever increasing of model size and computational complexity. The needs for high computing power brings higher carbon emission and undermines research fairness by preventing small or medium-sized research institutions and companies with limited funding in participating in research. To tackle the challenges of computing resources and environmental impact of AI, Green Computing has become a hot research topic. In this survey, we give a systematic overview of the technologies used in Green Computing. We propose the framework of Green Computing and devide it into four key components: (1) Measures of Greenness, (2) Energy-Efficient AI, (3) Energy-Efficient Computing Systems and (4) AI Use Cases for Sustainability. For each components, we discuss the research progress made and the commonly used techniques to optimize the AI efficiency. We conclude that this new research direction has the potential to address the conflicts between resource constraints and AI development. We encourage more researchers to put attention on this direction and make AI more environmental friendly.

An Explainable Framework for Machine learning-Based Reactive Power Optimization of Distribution Network

To reduce the heavy computational burden of reactive power optimization of distribution networks, machine learning models are receiving increasing attention. However, most machine learning models (e.g., neural networks) are usually considered as black boxes, making it challenging for power system operators to identify and comprehend potential biases or errors in the decision-making process of machine learning models. To address this issue, an explainable machine-learning framework is proposed to optimize the reactive power in distribution networks. Firstly, a Shapley additive explanation framework is presented to measure the contribution of each input feature to the solution of reactive power optimizations generated from machine learning models. Secondly, a model-agnostic approximation method is developed to estimate Shapley values, so as to avoid the heavy computational burden associated with direct calculations of Shapley values. The simulation results show that the proposed explainable framework can accurately explain the solution of the machine learning model-based reactive power optimization by using visual analytics, from both global and instance perspectives. Moreover, the proposed explainable framework is model-agnostic, and thus applicable to various models (e.g., neural networks).

Not All Demonstration Examples are Equally Beneficial: Reweighting Demonstration Examples for In-Context Learning

Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently gained the In-Context Learning (ICL) ability with the models scaling up, allowing them to quickly adapt to downstream tasks with only a few demonstration examples prepended in the input sequence. Nonetheless, the current practice of ICL treats all demonstration examples equally, which still warrants improvement, as the quality of examples is usually uneven. In this paper, we investigate how to determine approximately optimal weights for demonstration examples and how to apply them during ICL. To assess the quality of weights in the absence of additional validation data, we design a masked self-prediction (MSP) score that exhibits a strong correlation with the final ICL performance. To expedite the weight-searching process, we discretize the continuous weight space and adopt beam search. With approximately optimal weights obtained, we further propose two strategies to apply them to demonstrations at different model positions. Experimental results on 8 text classification tasks show that our approach outperforms conventional ICL by a large margin. Our code are publicly available at https:github.com/Zhe-Young/WICL.

Mixed-state Entanglement for AdS Born-Infeld Theory

We study the mixed-state entanglement for AdS Born-Infeld (BI) theory. We calculate the mixed-state entanglement and investigate the relationship between it and the system parameters. We find that the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and mutual information (MI) exhibit monotonically increasing and decreasing behavior with BI factor $b$. However, the entanglement wedge cross-section (EWCS) exhibits a very rich set of phenomena about system parameters. EWCS always increases with $b$ when $b$ is small and then monotonically decreases with $b$. These behaviors suggest that increasing the BI factor, which is essentially enhancing the coupling between the background geometry and the transport properties can always enhance the EWCS. The coupling between the entanglement and the transport behaviors has also been studied in condensed matter theories and is important to construct a stable quantum circuit. We also provide analytical understanding of the above phenomenon. Furthermore, we have tested two additional BI-like models and find the universality of these results, suggesting the crucial role of the BI term in governing the interplay between nonlinear electromagnetic effects and entanglement.

DeepStream: Bandwidth Efficient Multi-Camera Video Streaming for Deep Learning Analytics

Deep learning video analytic systems process live video feeds from multiple cameras with computer vision models deployed on edge or cloud. To optimize utility for these systems, which usually corresponds to query accuracy, efficient bandwidth management for the cameras competing for the fluctuating network resources is crucial. We propose DeepStream, a bandwidth efficient multi-camera video streaming system for deep learning video analytics. DeepStream addresses the challenge of limited and fluctuating bandwidth resources by offering several tailored solutions. We design a novel Regions of Interest detection (ROIDet) algorithm which can run in real time on resource constraint devices, such as Raspberry Pis, to remove spatial redundancy in video frames and reduce the amount of data to be transmitted. We also propose a content-aware bandwidth optimization framework and an Elastic Transmission Mechanism that exploits correlations among video contents. We implement DeepStream on Raspberry Pis and a desktop computer. Evaluations on real-world datasets show that DeepStream's ROIDet algorithm saves up to 54\% bandwidth with less than 1\% accuracy drop. Additionally,DeepStream improves utility by up to 23\% compared to baselines under the same bandwidth conditions.

The mixed-state entanglement in holographic p-wave superconductor model

In this paper, we investigate the mixed-state entanglement in a model of p-wave superconductivity phase transition using holographic methods. We calculate several entanglement measures, including holographic entanglement entropy (HEE), mutual information (MI), and entanglement wedge cross-section (EWCS). Our results show that these measures display critical behavior at the phase transition points, with the EWCS exhibiting opposite temperature behavior compared to the HEE. Additionally, we find that the critical exponents of all entanglement measures are twice those of the condensate. Moreover, we find that the EWCS is a more sensitive indicator of the critical behavior of phase transitions than the HEE. Furthermore, we uncover a universal inequality in the growth rates of EWCS and MI near critical points in thermal phase transitions, such as p-wave and s-wave superconductivity, suggesting that MI captures more information than EWCS when a phase transition first occurs.

RIO: Order-Preserving and CPU-Efficient Remote Storage Access

Modern NVMe SSDs and RDMA networks provide dramatically higher bandwidth and concurrency. Existing networked storage systems (e.g., NVMe over Fabrics) fail to fully exploit these new devices due to inefficient storage ordering guarantees. Severe synchronous execution for storage order in these systems stalls the CPU and I/O devices and lowers the CPU and I/O performance efficiency of the storage system. We present Rio, a new approach to the storage order of remote storage access. The key insight in Rio is that the layered design of the software stack, along with the concurrent and asynchronous network and storage devices, makes the storage stack conceptually similar to the CPU pipeline. Inspired by the CPU pipeline that executes out-of-order and commits in-order, Rio introduces the I/O pipeline that allows internal out-of-order and asynchronous execution for ordered write requests while offering intact external storage order to applications. Together with merging consecutive ordered requests, these design decisions make for write throughput and CPU efficiency close to that of orderless requests. We implement Rio in Linux NVMe over RDMA stack, and further build a file system named RioFS atop Rio. Evaluations show that Rio outperforms Linux NVMe over RDMA and a state-of-the-art storage stack named Horae by two orders of magnitude and 4.9 times on average in terms of throughput of ordered write requests, respectively. RioFS increases the throughput of RocksDB by 1.9 times and 1.5 times on average, against Ext4 and HoraeFS, respectively.

Low-resource Neural Machine Translation with Cross-modal Alignment

How to achieve neural machine translation with limited parallel data? Existing techniques often rely on large-scale monolingual corpora, which is impractical for some low-resource languages. In this paper, we turn to connect several low-resource languages to a particular high-resource one by additional visual modality. Specifically, we propose a cross-modal contrastive learning method to learn a shared space for all languages, where both a coarse-grained sentence-level objective and a fine-grained token-level one are introduced. Experimental results and further analysis show that our method can effectively learn the cross-modal and cross-lingual alignment with a small amount of image-text pairs and achieves significant improvements over the text-only baseline under both zero-shot and few-shot scenarios.

Scenario Generation for Cooling, Heating, and Power Loads Using Generative Moment Matching Networks

Scenario generations of cooling, heating, and power loads are of great significance for the economic operation and stability analysis of integrated energy systems. In this paper, a novel deep generative network is proposed to model cooling, heating, and power load curves based on a generative moment matching networks (GMMN) where an auto-encoder transforms high-dimensional load curves into low-dimensional latent variables and the maximum mean discrepancy represents the similarity metrics between the generated samples and the real samples. After training the model, the new scenarios are generated by feeding Gaussian noises to the scenario generator of the GMMN. Unlike the explicit density models, the proposed GMMN does not need to artificially assume the probability distribution of the load curves, which leads to stronger universality. The simulation results show that the GMMN not only fits the probability distribution of multi-class load curves well, but also accurately captures the shape (e.g., large peaks, fast ramps, and fluctuation), frequency-domain characteristics, and temporal-spatial correlations of cooling, heating, and power loads. Furthermore, the energy consumption of generated samples closely resembles that of real samples.

Mixed State Entanglement For Holographic Systems With A Scalar Hair

We study the mixed state entanglement of an asymptotic AdS black hole system with scalar hair. Through numerical calculations, we find that the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) presents a non-monotonic behavior with the system parameter, depending on the size of the subregion. In addition, the mutual information (MI) also shows non-monotonic behavior in certain ranges of system parameters. However, the entanglement wedge minimum cross-section (EWCS), which is a mixed state entanglement measure, increases monotonically with the AdS radius; meanwhile, shows non-monotonic with the temperature. We also give analytical understandings of the phenomena above.

Entanglement Wedge Minimum Cross-Section in Holographic Axion Gravity Theories

We study the mixed state entanglement properties in two holographic axion models by examining the behavior of the entanglement wedge minimum cross section (EWCS), and comparing it with the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and mutual information (MI). We find that the behavior of HEE, MI and EWCS with Hawking temperature is monotonic, while the behavior with the axion parameter $k$ is more rich, which depends on the size of the configuration and the values of the other two parameters. Interestingly, the EWCS monotonically increases with the coupling constant $κ$ between the axion field and the Maxwell field, while HEE and MI can be non-monotonic. It suggests that the EWCS, as a mixed state entanglement measure, captures distinct degrees of freedom from the HEE and MI indeed. We also provide analytical understandings for most of the numerical results.

Short-Term Power Prediction for Renewable Energy Using Hybrid Graph Convolutional Network and Long Short-Term Memory Approach

Accurate short-term solar and wind power predictions play an important role in the planning and operation of power systems. However, the short-term power prediction of renewable energy has always been considered a complex regression problem, owing to the fluctuation and intermittence of output powers and the law of dynamic change with time due to local weather conditions, i.e. spatio-temporal correlation. To capture the spatio-temporal features simultaneously, this paper proposes a new graph neural network-based short-term power forecasting approach, which combines the graph convolutional network (GCN) and long short-term memory (LSTM). Specifically, the GCN is employed to learn complex spatial correlations between adjacent renewable energies, and the LSTM is used to learn dynamic changes of power generation curves. The simulation results show that the proposed hybrid approach can model the spatio-temporal correlation of renewable energies, and its performance outperforms popular baselines on real-world datasets.

A Joint Model for Aspect-Category Sentiment Analysis with Shared Sentiment Prediction Layer

Aspect-category sentiment analysis (ACSA) aims to predict the aspect categories mentioned in texts and their corresponding sentiment polarities. Some joint models have been proposed to address this task. Given a text, these joint models detect all the aspect categories mentioned in the text and predict the sentiment polarities toward them at once. Although these joint models obtain promising performances, they train separate parameters for each aspect category and therefore suffer from data deficiency of some aspect categories. To solve this problem, we propose a novel joint model which contains a shared sentiment prediction layer. The shared sentiment prediction layer transfers sentiment knowledge between aspect categories and alleviates the problem caused by data deficiency. Experiments conducted on SemEval-2016 Datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model.
