Event-Centric Query Expansion in Web Search

In search engines, query expansion (QE) is a crucial technique to improve search experience. Previous studies often rely on long-term search log mining, which leads to slow updates and is sub-optimal for time-sensitive news searches. In this work, we present Event-Centric Query Expansion (EQE), a novel QE system that addresses these issues by mining the best expansion from a significant amount of potential events rapidly and accurately. This system consists of four stages, i.e., event collection, event reformulation, semantic retrieval and online ranking. Specifically, we first collect and filter news headlines from websites. Then we propose a generation model that incorporates contrastive learning and prompt-tuning techniques to reformulate these headlines to concise candidates. Additionally, we fine-tune a dual-tower semantic model to function as an encoder for event retrieval and explore a two-stage contrastive training approach to enhance the accuracy of event retrieval. Finally, we rank the retrieved events and select the optimal one as QE, which is then used to improve the retrieval of event-related documents. Through offline analysis and online A/B testing, we observe that the EQE system significantly improves many metrics compared to the baseline. The system has been deployed in Tencent QQ Browser Search and served hundreds of millions of users. The dataset and baseline codes are available at https://open-event-hub.github.io/eqe .

Energy loss enhancement of very intense proton beams in dense matter due to the beam-density effect

Thoroughly understanding the transport and energy loss of intense ion beams in dense matter is essential for high-energy-density physics and inertial confinement fusion. Here, we report a stopping power experiment with a high-intensity laser-driven proton beam in cold, dense matter. The measured energy loss is one order of magnitude higher than the expectation of individual particle stopping models. We attribute this finding to the proximity of beam ions to each other, which is usually insignificant for relatively-low-current beams from classical accelerators. The ionization of the cold target by the intense ion beam is important for the stopping power calculation and has been considered using proper ionization cross section data. Final theoretical values agree well with the experimental results. Additionally, we extend the stopping power calculation for intense ion beams to plasma scenario based on Ohm's law. Both the proximity- and the Ohmic effect can enhance the energy loss of intense beams in dense matter, which are also summarized as the beam-density effect. This finding is useful for the stopping power estimation of intense beams and significant to fast ignition fusion driven by intense ion beams.

CVGG-Net: Ship Recognition for SAR Images Based on Complex-Valued Convolutional Neural Network

Ship target recognition is a vital task in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging applications. Although convolutional neural networks have been successfully employed for SAR image target recognition, surpassing traditional algorithms, most existing research concentrates on the amplitude domain and neglects the essential phase information. Furthermore, several complex-valued neural networks utilize average pooling to achieve full complex values, resulting in suboptimal performance. To address these concerns, this paper introduces a Complex-valued Convolutional Neural Network (CVGG-Net) specifically designed for SAR image ship recognition. CVGG-Net effectively leverages both the amplitude and phase information in complex-valued SAR data. Additionally, this study examines the impact of various widely-used complex activation functions on network performance and presents a novel complex max-pooling method, called Complex Area Max-Pooling. Experimental results from two measured SAR datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional real-valued convolutional neural networks. The proposed framework is validated on several SAR datasets.

Nanoscale creep mechanism of clay through MD modeling with hexagonal particles

In this article, we investigate the creep mechanism of clay at the nanoscale. We conduct the molecular dynamics (MD) modeling of clay samples consisting of hexagonal particles under compression and shear. The MD simulations include oedometer creep, shear creep, direct shear tests, and stress relaxation. The numerical results show that the nanoscale creep mechanism of clay is related to particle rotation, translation, and stacking under different loading conditions. The clay sample under creep shows two types of particle arrangements, i.e., the shifted face-to-face configuration and the face-to-edge configuration. The orientation angle of clay particles is computed to track the rotation of individual particles due to creep. The fabric variation of the clay under creep is characterized by the dihedral angle between the basal particle plane and the x-y plane and the order parameter. It is found that the factors affecting the microstructure variation of the clay aggregate include stress levels, loading rates, and particle sizes. In the nanoscale shear creep test, the creep process comprises three stages, i.e., primary, secondary, and tertiary. The microstructure change during creep depends on the initial alignment of clay particles. The clay creep under a more significant stress level results in a more considerable order parameter and a more orientated clay structure.

SPHR-SAR-Net: Superpixel High-resolution SAR Imaging Network Based on Nonlocal Total Variation

High-resolution is a key trend in the development of synthetic aperture radar (SAR), which enables the capture of fine details and accurate representation of backscattering properties. However, traditional high-resolution SAR imaging algorithms face several challenges. Firstly, these algorithms tend to focus on local information, neglecting non-local information between different pixel patches. Secondly, speckle is more pronounced and difficult to filter out in high-resolution SAR images. Thirdly, the process of high-resolution SAR imaging generally involves high time and computational complexity, making real-time imaging difficult to achieve. To address these issues, we propose a Superpixel High-Resolution SAR Imaging Network (SPHR-SAR-Net) for rapid despeckling in high-resolution SAR mode. Based on the concept of superpixel techniques, we initially combine non-convex and non-local total variation as compound regularization. This approach more effectively despeckles and manages the relationship between pixels while reducing bias effects caused by convex constraints. Subsequently, we solve the compound regularization model using the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) algorithm and unfold it into a Deep Unfolded Network (DUN). The network's parameters are adaptively learned in a data-driven manner, and the learned network significantly increases imaging speed. Additionally, the Deep Unfolded Network is compatible with high-resolution imaging modes such as spotlight, staring spotlight, and sliding spotlight. In this paper, we demonstrate the superiority of SPHR-SAR-Net through experiments in both simulated and real SAR scenarios. The results indicate that SPHR-SAR-Net can rapidly perform high-resolution SAR imaging from raw echo data, producing accurate imaging results.

SE-ORNet: Self-Ensembling Orientation-aware Network for Unsupervised Point Cloud Shape Correspondence

Unsupervised point cloud shape correspondence aims to obtain dense point-to-point correspondences between point clouds without manually annotated pairs. However, humans and some animals have bilateral symmetry and various orientations, which lead to severe mispredictions of symmetrical parts. Besides, point cloud noise disrupts consistent representations for point cloud and thus degrades the shape correspondence accuracy. To address the above issues, we propose a Self-Ensembling ORientation-aware Network termed SE-ORNet. The key of our approach is to exploit an orientation estimation module with a domain adaptive discriminator to align the orientations of point cloud pairs, which significantly alleviates the mispredictions of symmetrical parts. Additionally, we design a selfensembling framework for unsupervised point cloud shape correspondence. In this framework, the disturbances of point cloud noise are overcome by perturbing the inputs of the student and teacher networks with different data augmentations and constraining the consistency of predictions. Extensive experiments on both human and animal datasets show that our SE-ORNet can surpass state-of-the-art unsupervised point cloud shape correspondence methods.

Anomalous Floquet Topological Disclination States

Recently, non-reciprocal two-dimensional unitary scattering networks have gained considerable interest due to the possibility of obtaining robust edge wave propagation in the anomalous Floquet phase. Conversely, zero-dimensional topological states in such networks have been left uncharted. Here, we demonstrate the existence of Floquet disclination states in non-reciprocal scattering networks. The disclination states, characterized by spectral charges, nucleate in the anomalous phase from a resonant rotation-symmetric phase matching condition, and survive until the bandgaps close. Once coupled to the radiation continuum feeding the anomalous chiral edge state, they can induce intriguing topological disclination bound states in the continuum (BICs), associated with an extreme confinement and lifetime. Altogether, anomalous Floquet disclination states and topological disclination BIC broaden the applications of disclination states to microwave, acoustic or optical scattering networks, with new possibilities in chiral topological lasing, robust energy squeezing from topological bound states, and switchable lasing and anti-lasing behavior induced via unidirectional topological coupling.

CM-CASL: Comparison-based Performance Modeling of Software Systems via Collaborative Active and Semisupervised Learning

Configuration tuning for large software systems is generally challenging due to the complex configuration space and expensive performance evaluation. Most existing approaches follow a two-phase process, first learning a regression-based performance prediction model on available samples and then searching for the configurations with satisfactory performance using the learned model. Such regression-based models often suffer from the scarcity of samples due to the enormous time and resources required to run a large software system with a specific configuration. Moreover, previous studies have shown that even a highly accurate regression-based model may fail to discern the relative merit between two configurations, whereas performance comparison is actually one fundamental strategy for configuration tuning. To address these issues, this paper proposes CM-CASL, a Comparison-based performance Modeling approach for software systems via Collaborative Active and Semisupervised Learning. CM-CASL learns a classification model that compares the performance of two given configurations, and enhances the samples through a collaborative labeling process by both human experts and classifiers using an integration of active and semisupervised learning. Experimental results demonstrate that CM-CASL outperforms two state-of-the-art performance modeling approaches in terms of both classification accuracy and rank accuracy, and thus provides a better performance model for the subsequent work of configuration tuning.

MF-JMoDL-Net: A Deep Network for Azimuth Undersampling Pattern Design and Ambiguity Suppression for Sparse SAR Imaging

repetition frequency (PRF). Given the system complexity and resource constraints, it is often difficult to achieve high imaging performance and low ambiguity without compromising the swath. In this paper, we propose a joint optimization framework for sparse strip SAR imaging algorithms and azimuth undersampling patterns based on a deep convolutional neural network, combined with matched filter (MF) approximate measurement operators and inverse MF operators, referred to as MF-JMoDL-Net, for sparse SAR imaging methods. Compared with conventional sparse SAR imaging, MF-JMoDL-Net enables us to alleviate the limitations imposed by PRF. In the proposed scheme, joint and continuous optimization of azimuth undersampling patterns and convolutional neural network parameters are implemented to suppress azimuth ambiguity and enhance sparse SAR imaging quality. Experiments and comparisons under various conditions demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed framework in imaging results.

Efficient Gridless DoA Estimation Method of Non-uniform Linear Arrays with Applications in Automotive Radars

This paper focuses on the gridless direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation for data acquired by non-uniform linear arrays (NLAs) in automotive applications. Atomic norm minimization (ANM) is a promising gridless sparse recovery algorithm under the Toeplitz model and solved by convex relaxation, thus it is only applicable to uniform linear arrays (ULAs) with array manifolds having a Vandermonde structure. In automotive applications, it is essential to apply the gridless DoA estimation to NLAs with arbitrary geometry with efficiency. In this paper, a fast ANM-based gridless DoA estimation algorithm for NLAs is proposed, which employs the array manifold separation technique and the accelerated proximal gradient (APG) technique, making it applicable to NLAs without losing of efficiency. Simulation and measurement experiments on automotive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

Optimal Methods for Convex Risk Averse Distributed Optimization

This paper studies the communication complexity of convex risk-averse optimization over a network. The problem generalizes the well-studied risk-neutral finite-sum distributed optimization problem and its importance stems from the need to handle risk in an uncertain environment. For algorithms in the literature, there exists a gap in communication complexities for solving risk-averse and risk-neutral problems. We propose two distributed algorithms, namely the distributed risk averse optimization (DRAO) method and the distributed risk averse optimization with sliding (DRAO-S) method, to close the gap. Specifically, the DRAO method achieves the optimal communication complexity by assuming a certain saddle point subproblem can be easily solved in the server node. The DRAO-S method removes the strong assumption by introducing a novel saddle point sliding subroutine which only requires the projection over the ambiguity set $P$. We observe that the number of $P$-projections performed by DRAO-S is optimal. Moreover, we develop matching lower complexity bounds to show the communication complexities of both DRAO and DRAO-S to be improvable. Numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the encouraging empirical performance of the DRAO-S method.

The Solar Upper Transition Region Imager (SUTRI) onboard the SATech-01 satellite

The Solar Upper Transition Region Imager (SUTRI) onboard the Space Advanced Technology demonstration satellite (SATech-01), which was launched to a sun-synchronous orbit at a height of 500 km in July 2022, aims to test the on-orbit performance of our newly developed Sc-Si multi-layer reflecting mirror and the 2kx2k EUV CMOS imaging camera and to take full-disk solar images at the Ne VII 46.5 nm spectral line with a filter width of 3 nm. SUTRI employs a Ritchey-Chretien optical system with an aperture of 18 cm. The on-orbit observations show that SUTRI images have a field of view of 41.6'x41.6' and a moderate spatial resolution of 8" without an image stabilization system. The normal cadence of SUTRI images is 30 s and the solar observation time is about 16 hours each day because the earth eclipse time accounts for about 1/3 of SATech-01's orbit period. Approximately 15 GB data is acquired each day and made available online after processing. SUTRI images are valuable as the Ne VII 46.5 nm line is formed at a temperature regime of 0.5 MK in the solar atmosphere, which has rarely been sampled by existing solar imagers. SUTRI observations will establish connections between structures in the lower solar atmosphere and corona, and advance our understanding of various types of solar activity such as flares, filament eruptions, coronal jets and coronal mass ejections.

Locally Spontaneous Dynamic Oxygen Migration on Biphenylene: A DFT Study

The dynamic oxygen migration at the interface of carbon allotropes dominated by the periodic hexagonal rings, including graphene and carbon nanotube, has opened up a new avenue to realize dynamic covalent materials. However, for the carbon materials with hybrid carbon rings, such as biphenylene, whether the dynamic oxygen migration at its interface can still be found remains unknown. Using both density functional theory calculations and machine-learning-based molecular dynamics (MLMD) simulations, we found that the oxygen migration departing away from the four-membered carbon (C4) ring is hindered, and the oxygen atom prefers to spontaneously migrate toward/around the C4 ring. This locally spontaneous dynamic oxygen migration on the biphenylene is attributed to the high barrier of about 1.5 eV for the former process and relatively low barrier of about 0.3 eV for the latter one, originating from the enhanced activity of C-O bond near/around the C4 ring due to the hybrid carbon rings structure. Moreover, the locally spontaneous dynamic oxygen migration is further confirmed by MLMD simulations. This work sheds light on the potential of biphenylene as a catalyst for spatial-controlled energy conversion and provides the guidance for realizing the dynamic covalent interface at other carbon-based or two-dimensional materials.

Deep Attention-Based Alignment Network for Melody Generation from Incomplete Lyrics

We propose a deep attention-based alignment network, which aims to automatically predict lyrics and melody with given incomplete lyrics as input in a way similar to the music creation of humans. Most importantly, a deep neural lyrics-to-melody net is trained in an encoder-decoder way to predict possible pairs of lyrics-melody when given incomplete lyrics (few keywords). The attention mechanism is exploited to align the predicted lyrics with the melody during the lyrics-to-melody generation. The qualitative and quantitative evaluation metrics reveal that the proposed method is indeed capable of generating proper lyrics and corresponding melody for composing new songs given a piece of incomplete seed lyrics.

Anomalous topological waves in strongly amorphous scattering networks

Topological insulators are crystalline materials that have revolutionized our ability to control wave transport. They provide us with unidirectional channels that are immune to obstacles, defects or local disorder, and can even survive some random deformations of their crystalline structures. However, they always break down when the level of disorder or amorphism gets too large, transitioning to a topologically trivial Anderson insulating phase. Here, we demonstrate a two-dimensional amorphous topological regime that survives arbitrarily strong levels of amorphism. We implement it for electromagnetic waves in a non-reciprocal scattering network and experimentally demonstrate the existence of unidirectional edge transport in the strong amorphous limit. This edge transport is shown to be mediated by an anomalous edge state whose topological origin is evidenced by direct topological invariant measurements. Our findings extend the reach of topological physics to a new class of systems in which strong amorphism can induce, enhance and guarantee the topological edge transport instead of impeding it.

Imaging with an ultra-thin reciprocal lens

Imaging is of great importance in everyday life and various fields of science and technology. Conventional imaging is achieved by bending light rays originating from an object with a lens. Such ray bending requires space-variant structures, inevitably introducing a geometric center to the lens. To overcome the limitations arising from the conventional imaging mechanism, we consider imaging elements that employ a different mechanism, which we call reciprocal lenses. This type of imaging element relies on ray shifting, enabled by momentum-space-variant phase modulations in periodic structures. As such, it has the distinct advantage of not requiring alignment with a geometric center. Moreover, upright real images can be produced directly with a single reciprocal lens as the directions of rays are not changed. We realized an ultra-thin reciprocal lens based on a photonic crystal slab. We characterized the ray shifting behavior of the reciprocal lens and demonstrated imaging. Our work gives an alternative mechanism for imaging, and provides a new way to modulate electromagnetic waves.

Construction and Validation of a Geometry-based Mathematical Model for the Hard X-ray Imager

Quantitative and analytical analysis of modulation process of the collimator is a great challenge, and is also of great value to the design and development of Fourier transform imaging telescopes. The Hard X-ray Imager (HXI), as one of the three payloads onboard the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory(ASO-S) mission, adopts modulating Fourier-Transformation imaging technique and will be used to explore mechanism of energy release and transmission in solar flare activities. As an important step to reconstruct the images of solar flares, accurate modulation functions of HXI are needed. In this paper, a mathematical model is developed to analyze the modulation function under a simplified condition first. Then its behavior under six degrees of freedom is calculated after adding the rotation matrix and translation change to the model. In addition, unparalleled light and extended sources also are considered so that our model can be used to analyze the X-ray beam experiment. Next, applied to the practical HXI conditions, the model has been confirmed not only by Geant4 simulations but also by some verification experiments. Furthermore, how this model helps to improve the image reconstruction process after the launch of ASO-S is also presented.

A novel TomoSAR imaging method with few observations based on nested array

Synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) baseline optimization technique is capable of reducing system complexity and improving the temporal coherence of data, which has become an important research in the field of TomoSAR. In this paper, we propose a nested TomoSAR technique, which introduces the nested array into TomoSAR as the baseline configuration. This technique obtains uniform and continuous difference co-array through nested array to increase the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the system and expands the virtual aperture along the elevation direction. In order to make full use of the difference co-array, covariance matrix of the echo needs to be obtained. Therefore, we propose a TomoSAR sparse reconstruction algorithm based on nested array, which uses adaptive covariance matrix estimation to improve the estimation performance in complex scenes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method through simulated and real data experiments. Compared with traditional TomoSAR and coprime TomoSAR, the imaging results of our proposed method have a better anti-noise performance and retain more image information.
