E$^3$-Net: Efficient E(3)-Equivariant Normal Estimation Network

Point cloud normal estimation is a fundamental task in 3D geometry processing. While recent learning-based methods achieve notable advancements in normal prediction, they often overlook the critical aspect of equivariance. This results in inefficient learning of symmetric patterns. To address this issue, we propose E3-Net to achieve equivariance for normal estimation. We introduce an efficient random frame method, which significantly reduces the training resources required for this task to just 1/8 of previous work and improves the accuracy. Further, we design a Gaussian-weighted loss function and a receptive-aware inference strategy that effectively utilizes the local properties of point clouds. Our method achieves superior results on both synthetic and real-world datasets, and outperforms current state-of-the-art techniques by a substantial margin. We improve RMSE by 4% on the PCPNet dataset, 2.67% on the SceneNN dataset, and 2.44% on the FamousShape dataset.

Unsupervised Learning for Joint Beamforming Design in RIS-aided ISAC Systems

It is critical to design efficient beamforming in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems for enhancing spectrum utilization. However, conventional methods often have limitations, either incurring high computational complexity due to iterative algorithms or sacrificing performance when using heuristic methods. To achieve both low complexity and high spectrum efficiency, an unsupervised learning-based beamforming design is proposed in this work. We tailor image-shaped channel samples and develop an ISAC beamforming neural network (IBF-Net) model for beamforming. By leveraging unsupervised learning, the loss function incorporates key performance metrics like sensing and communication channel correlation and sensing channel gain, eliminating the need of labeling. Simulations show that the proposed method achieves competitive performance compared to benchmarks while significantly reduces computational complexity.

VS-Assistant: Versatile Surgery Assistant on the Demand of Surgeons

The surgical intervention is crucial to patient healthcare, and many studies have developed advanced algorithms to provide understanding and decision-making assistance for surgeons. Despite great progress, these algorithms are developed for a single specific task and scenario, and in practice require the manual combination of different functions, thus limiting the applicability. Thus, an intelligent and versatile surgical assistant is expected to accurately understand the surgeon's intentions and accordingly conduct the specific tasks to support the surgical process. In this work, by leveraging advanced multimodal large language models (MLLMs), we propose a Versatile Surgery Assistant (VS-Assistant) that can accurately understand the surgeon's intention and complete a series of surgical understanding tasks, e.g., surgical scene analysis, surgical instrument detection, and segmentation on demand. Specifically, to achieve superior surgical multimodal understanding, we devise a mixture of projectors (MOP) module to align the surgical MLLM in VS-Assistant to balance the natural and surgical knowledge. Moreover, we devise a surgical Function-Calling Tuning strategy to enable the VS-Assistant to understand surgical intentions, and thus make a series of surgical function calls on demand to meet the needs of the surgeons. Extensive experiments on neurosurgery data confirm that our VS-Assistant can understand the surgeon's intention more accurately than the existing MLLM, resulting in overwhelming performance in textual analysis and visual tasks. Source code and models will be made public.

Enhancing Surgical Robots with Embodied Intelligence for Autonomous Ultrasound Scanning

Ultrasound robots are increasingly used in medical diagnostics and early disease screening. However, current ultrasound robots lack the intelligence to understand human intentions and instructions, hindering autonomous ultrasound scanning. To solve this problem, we propose a novel Ultrasound Embodied Intelligence system that equips ultrasound robots with the large language model (LLM) and domain knowledge, thereby improving the efficiency of ultrasound robots. Specifically, we first design an ultrasound operation knowledge database to add expertise in ultrasound scanning to the LLM, enabling the LLM to perform precise motion planning. Furthermore, we devise a dynamic ultrasound scanning strategy based on a \textit{think-observe-execute} prompt engineering, allowing LLMs to dynamically adjust motion planning strategies during the scanning procedures. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our system significantly improves ultrasound scan efficiency and quality from verbal commands. This advancement in autonomous medical scanning technology contributes to non-invasive diagnostics and streamlined medical workflows.

Transitive Vision-Language Prompt Learning for Domain Generalization

The vision-language pre-training has enabled deep models to make a huge step forward in generalizing across unseen domains. The recent learning method based on the vision-language pre-training model is a great tool for domain generalization and can solve this problem to a large extent. However, there are still some issues that an advancement still suffers from trading-off between domain invariance and class separability, which are crucial in current DG problems. However, there are still some issues that an advancement still suffers from trading-off between domain invariance and class separability, which are crucial in current DG problems. In this paper, we introduce a novel prompt learning strategy that leverages deep vision prompts to address domain invariance while utilizing language prompts to ensure class separability, coupled with adaptive weighting mechanisms to balance domain invariance and class separability. Extensive experiments demonstrate that deep vision prompts effectively extract domain-invariant features, significantly improving the generalization ability of deep models and achieving state-of-the-art performance on three datasets.

Large-Scale Multi-Domain Recommendation: an Automatic Domain Feature Extraction and Personalized Integration Framework

Feed recommendation is currently the mainstream mode for many real-world applications (e.g., TikTok, Dianping), it is usually necessary to model and predict user interests in multiple scenarios (domains) within and even outside the application. Multi-domain learning is a typical solution in this regard. While considerable efforts have been made in this regard, there are still two long-standing challenges: (1) Accurately depicting the differences among domains using domain features is crucial for enhancing the performance of each domain. However, manually designing domain features and models for numerous domains can be a laborious task. (2) Users typically have limited impressions in only a few domains. Extracting features automatically from other domains and leveraging them to improve the predictive capabilities of each domain has consistently posed a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose an Automatic Domain Feature Extraction and Personalized Integration (DFEI) framework for the large-scale multi-domain recommendation. The framework automatically transforms the behavior of each individual user into an aggregation of all user behaviors within the domain, which serves as the domain features. Unlike offline feature engineering methods, the extracted domain features are higher-order representations and directly related to the target label. Besides, by personalized integration of domain features from other domains for each user and the innovation in the training mode, the DFEI framework can yield more accurate conversion identification. Experimental results on both public and industrial datasets, consisting of over 20 domains, clearly demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves significantly better performance compared with SOTA baselines. Furthermore, we have released the source code of the proposed framework at https://github.com/xidongbo/DFEI.

Unified Multi-modal Diagnostic Framework with Reconstruction Pre-training and Heterogeneity-combat Tuning

Medical multi-modal pre-training has revealed promise in computer-aided diagnosis by leveraging large-scale unlabeled datasets. However, existing methods based on masked autoencoders mainly rely on data-level reconstruction tasks, but lack high-level semantic information. Furthermore, two significant heterogeneity challenges hinder the transfer of pre-trained knowledge to downstream tasks, \textit{i.e.}, the distribution heterogeneity between pre-training data and downstream data, and the modality heterogeneity within downstream data. To address these challenges, we propose a Unified Medical Multi-modal Diagnostic (UMD) framework with tailored pre-training and downstream tuning strategies. Specifically, to enhance the representation abilities of vision and language encoders, we propose the Multi-level Reconstruction Pre-training (MR-Pretrain) strategy, including a feature-level and data-level reconstruction, which guides models to capture the semantic information from masked inputs of different modalities. Moreover, to tackle two kinds of heterogeneities during the downstream tuning, we present the heterogeneity-combat downstream tuning strategy, which consists of a Task-oriented Distribution Calibration (TD-Calib) and a Gradient-guided Modality Coordination (GM-Coord). In particular, TD-Calib fine-tunes the pre-trained model regarding the distribution of downstream datasets, and GM-Coord adjusts the gradient weights according to the dynamic optimization status of different modalities. Extensive experiments on five public medical datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our UMD framework, which remarkably outperforms existing approaches on three kinds of downstream tasks.

GaussianGrasper: 3D Language Gaussian Splatting for Open-vocabulary Robotic Grasping

Constructing a 3D scene capable of accommodating open-ended language queries, is a pivotal pursuit, particularly within the domain of robotics. Such technology facilitates robots in executing object manipulations based on human language directives. To tackle this challenge, some research efforts have been dedicated to the development of language-embedded implicit fields. However, implicit fields (e.g. NeRF) encounter limitations due to the necessity of processing a large number of input views for reconstruction, coupled with their inherent inefficiencies in inference. Thus, we present the GaussianGrasper, which utilizes 3D Gaussian Splatting to explicitly represent the scene as a collection of Gaussian primitives. Our approach takes a limited set of RGB-D views and employs a tile-based splatting technique to create a feature field. In particular, we propose an Efficient Feature Distillation (EFD) module that employs contrastive learning to efficiently and accurately distill language embeddings derived from foundational models. With the reconstructed geometry of the Gaussian field, our method enables the pre-trained grasping model to generate collision-free grasp pose candidates. Furthermore, we propose a normal-guided grasp module to select the best grasp pose. Through comprehensive real-world experiments, we demonstrate that GaussianGrasper enables robots to accurately query and grasp objects with language instructions, providing a new solution for language-guided manipulation tasks. UN-SAM: Universal Prompt-Free Segmentation for Generalized Nuclei Images

In digital pathology, precise nuclei segmentation is pivotal yet challenged by the diversity of tissue types, staining protocols, and imaging conditions. Recently, the segment anything model (SAM) revealed overwhelming performance in natural scenarios and impressive adaptation to medical imaging. Despite these advantages, the reliance of labor-intensive manual annotation as segmentation prompts severely hinders their clinical applicability, especially for nuclei image analysis containing massive cells where dense manual prompts are impractical. To overcome the limitations of current SAM methods while retaining the advantages, we propose the Universal prompt-free SAM framework for Nuclei segmentation (UN-SAM), by providing a fully automated solution with remarkable generalization capabilities. Specifically, to eliminate the labor-intensive requirement of per-nuclei annotations for prompt, we devise a multi-scale Self-Prompt Generation (SPGen) module to revolutionize clinical workflow by automatically generating high-quality mask hints to guide the segmentation tasks. Moreover, to unleash the generalization capability of SAM across a variety of nuclei images, we devise a Domain-adaptive Tuning Encoder (DT-Encoder) to seamlessly harmonize visual features with domain-common and domain-specific knowledge, and further devise a Domain Query-enhanced Decoder (DQ-Decoder) by leveraging learnable domain queries for segmentation decoding in different nuclei domains. Extensive experiments prove that UN-SAM with exceptional performance surpasses state-of-the-arts in nuclei instance and semantic segmentation, especially the generalization capability in zero-shot scenarios. Exploiting Duality in Open Information Extraction with Predicate Prompt

Open information extraction (OpenIE) aims to extract the schema-free triplets in the form of (\emph{subject}, \emph{predicate}, \emph{object}) from a given sentence. Compared with general information extraction (IE), OpenIE poses more challenges for the IE models, {especially when multiple complicated triplets exist in a sentence. To extract these complicated triplets more effectively, in this paper we propose a novel generative OpenIE model, namely \emph{DualOIE}, which achieves a dual task at the same time as extracting some triplets from the sentence, i.e., converting the triplets into the sentence.} Such dual task encourages the model to correctly recognize the structure of the given sentence and thus is helpful to extract all potential triplets from the sentence. Specifically, DualOIE extracts the triplets in two steps: 1) first extracting a sequence of all potential predicates, 2) then using the predicate sequence as a prompt to induce the generation of triplets. Our experiments on two benchmarks and our dataset constructed from Meituan demonstrate that DualOIE achieves the best performance among the state-of-the-art baselines. Furthermore, the online A/B test on Meituan platform shows that 0.93\% improvement of QV-CTR and 0.56\% improvement of UV-CTR have been obtained when the triplets extracted by DualOIE were leveraged in Meituan's search system.

Visualization of Oxygen Vacancies and Self-doped Ligand Holes in La3Ni2O7-δ

The recent discovery of superconductivity in La3Ni2O7-δ under high pressure with a transition temperature around 80 K has sparked extensive experimental and theoretical efforts. Several key questions regarding the pairing mechanism remain to be answered, such as the most relevant atomic orbitals and the role of atomic deficiencies. Here, we develop a new energy-filtered multislice electron ptychography technique, assisted with electron energy loss spectroscopy, to address these critical issues. Oxygen vacancies are directly visualized and are found to primarily occupy the inner apical sites, which have been proposed to be crucial to superconductivity. We precisely determine the nanoscale stoichiometry and its correlation to the oxygen K edge spectra, which reveals a significant inhomogeneity in the oxygen content and electronic structure within the sample. The spectroscopic results also unveil that stoichiometric La3Ni2O7 is in the charge-transfer regime, with holes that are self-doped from Ni sites into O sites. The outer apical oxygen is found to be less relevant to the low-energy physics and can be safely disregarded in theoretical models. These observations will assist in further development and understanding of superconducting nickelate materials. Our imaging technique for quantifying atomic deficiencies can also be widely applied in materials science and condensed matter physics.

Surgical Temporal Action-aware Network with Sequence Regularization for Phase Recognition

To assist surgeons in the operating theatre, surgical phase recognition is critical for developing computer-assisted surgical systems, which requires comprehensive understanding of surgical videos. Although existing studies made great progress, there are still two significant limitations worthy of improvement. First, due to the compromise of resource consumption, frame-wise visual features are extracted by 2D networks and disregard spatial and temporal knowledge of surgical actions, which hinders subsequent inter-frame modeling for phase prediction. Second, these works simply utilize ordinary classification loss with one-hot phase labels to optimize the phase predictions, and cannot fully explore surgical videos under inadequate supervision. To overcome these two limitations, we propose a Surgical Temporal Action-aware Network with sequence Regularization, named STAR-Net, to recognize surgical phases more accurately from input videos. Specifically, we propose an efficient multi-scale surgical temporal action (MS-STA) module, which integrates visual features with spatial and temporal knowledge of surgical actions at the cost of 2D networks. Moreover, we devise the dual-classifier sequence regularization (DSR) to facilitate the training of STAR-Net by the sequence guidance of an auxiliary classifier with a smaller capacity. Our STAR-Net with MS-STA and DSR can exploit visual features of surgical actions with effective regularization, thereby leading to the superior performance of surgical phase recognition. Extensive experiments on a large-scale gastrectomy surgery dataset and the public Cholec80 benchmark prove that our STAR-Net significantly outperforms state-of-the-arts of surgical phase recognition.

PWISeg: Point-based Weakly-supervised Instance Segmentation for Surgical Instruments

In surgical procedures, correct instrument counting is essential. Instance segmentation is a location method that locates not only an object's bounding box but also each pixel's specific details. However, obtaining mask-level annotations is labor-intensive in instance segmentation. To address this issue, we propose a novel yet effective weakly-supervised surgical instrument instance segmentation approach, named Point-based Weakly-supervised Instance Segmentation (PWISeg). PWISeg adopts an FCN-based architecture with point-to-box and point-to-mask branches to model the relationships between feature points and bounding boxes, as well as feature points and segmentation masks on FPN, accomplishing instrument detection and segmentation jointly in a single model. Since mask level annotations are hard to available in the real world, for point-to-mask training, we introduce an unsupervised projection loss, utilizing the projected relation between predicted masks and bboxes as supervision signal. On the other hand, we annotate a few pixels as the key pixel for each instrument. Based on this, we further propose a key pixel association loss and a key pixel distribution loss, driving the point-to-mask branch to generate more accurate segmentation predictions. To comprehensively evaluate this task, we unveil a novel surgical instrument dataset with manual annotations, setting up a benchmark for further research. Our comprehensive research trial validated the superior performance of our PWISeg. The results show that the accuracy of surgical instrument segmentation is improved, surpassing most methods of instance segmentation via weakly supervised bounding boxes. This improvement is consistently observed in our proposed dataset and when applied to the public HOSPI-Tools dataset.

SurgPLAN: Surgical Phase Localization Network for Phase Recognition

Surgical phase recognition is crucial to providing surgery understanding in smart operating rooms. Despite great progress in automatic surgical phase recognition, most existing methods are still restricted by two problems. First, these methods cannot capture discriminative visual features for each frame and motion information with simple 2D networks. Second, the frame-by-frame recognition paradigm degrades the performance due to unstable predictions within each phase, termed as phase shaking. To address these two challenges, we propose a Surgical Phase LocAlization Network, named SurgPLAN, to facilitate a more accurate and stable surgical phase recognition with the principle of temporal detection. Specifically, we first devise a Pyramid SlowFast (PSF) architecture to serve as the visual backbone to capture multi-scale spatial and temporal features by two branches with different frame sampling rates. Moreover, we propose a Temporal Phase Localization (TPL) module to generate the phase prediction based on temporal region proposals, which ensures accurate and consistent predictions within each surgical phase. Extensive experiments confirm the significant advantages of our SurgPLAN over frame-by-frame approaches in terms of both accuracy and stability.

PL-UNeXt: Per-stage Edge Detail and Line Feature Guided Segmentation for Power Line Detection

Power line detection is a critical inspection task for electricity companies and is also useful in avoiding drone obstacles. Accurately separating power lines from the surrounding area in the aerial image is still challenging due to the intricate background and low pixel ratio. In order to properly capture the guidance of the spatial edge detail prior and line features, we offer PL-UNeXt, a power line segmentation model with a booster training strategy. We design edge detail heads computing the loss in edge space to guide the lower-level detail learning and line feature heads generating auxiliary segmentation masks to supervise higher-level line feature learning. Benefited from this design, our model can reach 70.6 F1 score (+1.9%) on TTPLA and 68.41 mIoU (+5.2%) on VITL (without utilizing IR images), while preserving a real-time performance due to few inference parameters.

Charge redistribution, charge order and plasmon in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ superlattices

Interfacial superconductors have the potential to revolutionize electronics, quantum computing, and fundamental physics due to their enhanced superconducting properties and ability to create new types of superconductors. The emergence of superconductivity at the interface of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ (LSCO/LCO), with a T$_c$ enhancement of $\sim$ 10 K compared to the La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ bulk single crystals, provides an exciting opportunity to study quantum phenomena in reduced dimensions. To investigate the carrier distribution and excitations in interfacial superconductors, we combine O K-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and atomic-resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements to study La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ superlattices (x=0.15, 0.45) and bulk La$_{1.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$CuO$_{4}$ films. We find direct evidence of charge redistribution, charge order and plasmon in LSCO/LCO superlattices. Notably, the observed behaviors of charge order and plasmon deviate from the anticipated properties of individual constituents or the average doping level of the superlattice. Instead, they conform harmoniously to the effective doping, a critical parameter governed by the T$_c$ of interfacial superconductors.

Anisotropic Klemens model for the thermal conductivity tensor

With the constraint from Onsager reciprocity relations, here we generalize the Klemens model for phonon-phonon Umklapp scattering from isotropic to anisotropic. Combined with the anisotropic Debye dispersion, this anisotropic Klemens model leads to analytical expressions for heat transfer along both ab-plane (k_ab) and c-axis (k_c), suitable for both layered and chainlike materials with any anisotropy ratio of the dispersion and the scattering. The model is justified by comparison with experimental k_ab and k_c of bulk graphite at high temperatures, as well as the thickness-dependent k_c of graphite thin films at room temperature.
