Ideal Unconventional Weyl Point in a Chiral Photonic Metamaterial

Unconventional Weyl points (WPs), carrying topological charge 2 or higher, possess interesting properties different from ordinary charge-1 WPs, including multiple Fermi arcs that stretch over a large portion of the Brillouin zone. Thus far, such WPs have been observed in chiral materials and acoustic metamaterials, but there has been no clean demonstration in photonics in which the unconventional photonic WPs are separated from trivial bands. We experimentally realize an ideal symmetry-protected photonic charge-2 WP in a three-dimensional topological chiral microwave metamaterial. We use field mapping to directly observe the projected bulk dispersion, as well as the two long surface arcs that form a noncontractible loop wrapping around the surface Brillouin zone. The surface states span a record-wide frequency window of around 22.7% relative bandwidth. We demonstrate that the surface states exhibit a novel topological self-collimation property and are robust against disorder. This work provides an ideal photonic platform for exploring fundamental physics and applications of unconventional WPs.

Principal Component Analysis Based Broadband Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems

Hybrid analog-digital precoding is challenging for broadband millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems, since the analog precoder is frequency-flat but the mmWave channels are frequency-selective. In this paper, we propose a principal component analysis (PCA)-based broadband hybrid precoder/combiner design, where both the fully-connected array and partially-connected subarray (including the fixed and adaptive subarrays) are investigated. Specifically, we first design the hybrid precoder/combiner for fully-connected array and fixed subarray based on PCA, whereby a low-dimensional frequency-flat precoder/combiner is acquired based on the optimal high-dimensional frequency-selective precoder/combiner. Meanwhile, the near-optimality of our proposed PCA approach is theoretically proven. Moreover, for the adaptive subarray, a low-complexity shared agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithm is proposed to group the antennas for the further improvement of spectral efficiency (SE) performance. Besides, we theoretically prove that the proposed antenna grouping algorithm is only determined by the slow time-varying channel parameters in the large antenna limit. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed solution over state-of-the-art schemes in SE, energy efficiency (EE), bit-error-rate performance, and the robustness to time-varying channels. Our work reveals that the EE advantage of adaptive subarray over fully-connected array is obvious for both active and passive antennas, but the EE advantage of fixed subarray only holds for passive antennas.

Compressive Sensing Based Massive Access for IoT Relying on Media Modulation Aided Machine Type Communications

A fundamental challenge of the large-scale Internet-of-Things lies in how to support massive machine-type communications (mMTC). This letter proposes a media modulation based mMTC solution for increasing the throughput, where a massive multi-input multi-output based base station (BS) is used for enhancing the detection performance. For such a mMTC scenario, the reliable active device detection and data decoding pose a serious challenge. By leveraging the sparsity of the uplink access signals of mMTC received at the BS, a compressive sensing based massive access solution is proposed for tackling this challenge. Specifically, we propose a block sparsity adaptive matching pursuit algorithm for detecting the active devices, whereby the block-sparsity of the uplink access signals exhibited across the successive time slots and the structured sparsity of media modulated symbols are exploited for enhancing the detection performance. Moreover, a successive interference cancellation based structured subspace pursuit algorithm is conceived for data demodulation of the active devices, whereby the structured sparsity of media modulation based symbols found in each time slot is exploited for improving the detection performance. Finally, our simulation results verify the superiority of the proposed scheme over state-of-the-art solutions.

Data-Driven Deep Learning to Design Pilot and Channel Estimator For Massive MIMO

In this paper, we propose a data-driven deep learning (DL) approach to jointly design the pilot signals and channel estimator for wideband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. By exploiting the angular-domain compressibility of massive MIMO channels, the conceived DL framework can reliably reconstruct the high-dimensional channels from the under-determined measurements. Specifically, we design an end-to-end deep neural network (DNN) architecture composed of dimensionality reduction network and reconstruction network to respectively mimic the pilot signals and channel estimator, which can be acquired by data-driven deep learning. For the dimensionality reduction network, we design a fully-connected layer by compressing the high-dimensional massive MIMO channel vector as input to low-dimensional received measurements, where the weights are regarded as the pilot signals. For the reconstruction network, we design a fully-connected layer followed by multiple cascaded convolutional layers, which will reconstruct the high-dimensional channel as the output. By defining the mean square error between input and output as loss function, we leverage Adam algorithm to train the end-to-end DNN aforementioned with extensive channel samples. In this way, both the pilot signals and channel estimator can be simultaneously obtained. The simulation results demonstrate that the superiority of the proposed solution over state-of-the-art compressive sensing approaches.

Compressive Massive Access for Internet of Things: Cloud Computing or Fog Computing?

This paper considers the support of grant-free massive access and solves the challenge of active user detection and channel estimation in the case of a massive number of users. By exploiting the sparsity of user activities, the concerned problems are formulated as a compressive sensing problem, whose solution is acquired by approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm. Considering the cooperation of multiple access points, for the deployment of AMP algorithm, we compare two processing paradigms, cloud computing and fog computing, in terms of their effectiveness in guaranteeing ultra reliable low-latency access. For cloud computing, the access points are connected in a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) manner, and the signals received at all access points are concentrated and jointly processed in the cloud baseband unit. While for fog computing, based on fog radio access network (F-RAN), the estimation of user activity and corresponding channels for the whole network is split, and the related processing tasks are performed at the access points and fog processing units in proximity to users. Compared to the cloud computing paradigm based on traditional C-RAN, simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed fog computing deployment based on F-RAN.

GMD-Based Hybrid Beamforming for Large Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered to be an energy-efficient approach to reshape the wireless environment for improved throughput. Its passive feature greatly reduces the energy consumption, which makes RIS a promising technique for enabling the future smart city. Existing beamforming designs for RIS mainly focus on optimizing the spectral efficiency for single carrier systems. To avoid the complicated bit allocation on different spatial domain subchannels in MIMO systems, in this paper, we propose a geometric mean decomposition-based beamforming for RIS-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) hybrid MIMO systems so that multiple parallel data streams in the spatial domain can be considered to have the same channel gain. Specifically, by exploiting the common angular-domain sparsity of mmWave massive MIMO channels over different subcarriers, a simultaneous orthogonal match pursuit algorithm is utilized to obtain the optimal multiple beams from an oversampling 2D-DFT codebook. Moreover, by only leveraging the angle of arrival and angle of departure associated with the line of sight (LoS) channels, we further design the phase shifters for RIS by maximizing the array gain for LoS channel. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve better BER performance than conventional approaches. Our work is an initial attempt to discuss the broadband hybrid beamforming for RIS-assisted mmWave hybrid MIMO systems.

Compressive Sensing Based Channel Estimation for Millimeter-Wave Full-Dimensional MIMO with Lens-Array

Channel estimation (CE) for millimeter-wave (mmWave) lens-array suffers from prohibitive training overhead, whereas the state-of-the-art solutions require an extra complicated radio frequency phase shift network. By contrast, lens-array using antenna switching network (ASN) simplifies the hardware, but the associated CE is a challenging task due to the constraint imposed by ASN. This paper proposes a compressive sensing (CS)-based CE solution for full-dimensional (FD) lens-array, where the mmWave channel sparsity is exploited. Specifically, we first propose an approach of pilot training under the more severe haraware constraint imposed by ASN, and formulate the associated CE of lens-array as a CS problem. Then, a redundant dictionary is tailored for FD lens-array to combat the power leakage caused by the continuous angles of multipath components. Further, we design the baseband pilot signals to minimize the total mutual coherence of the measurement matrix based on CS theory for more reliable CE performance. Our solution provides a framework for applying CS techniques to lens-array using simple and practical ASN. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Closed-Loop Sparse Channel Estimation for Wideband Millimeter-Wave Full-Dimensional MIMO Systems

This paper proposes a closed-loop sparse channel estimation (CE) scheme for wideband millimeter-wave hybrid full-dimensional multiple-input multiple-output and time division duplexing based systems, which exploits the channel sparsity in both angle and delay domains. At the downlink CE stage, random transmit precoder is designed at base station (BS) for channel sounding, and receive combiners at user devices (UDs) are designed to visualize hybrid array as a low-dimensional digital array for facilitating the multi-dimensional unitary ESPRIT (MDU-ESPRIT) algorithm to estimate respective angle-of-arrivals (AoAs). At the uplink CE stage, the estimated downlink AoAs, namely, uplink angle-of-departures (AoDs), are exploited to design multi-beam transmit precoder at UDs to enable BS to estimate the uplink AoAs, i.e., the downlink AoDs, and delays of different UDs using the MDU-ESPRIT algorithm based on the designed receive combiners at BS. Furthermore, a maximum likelihood approach is proposed to pair the channel parameters acquired at the two stages, and the path gains are then obtained using least squares estimator. According to spectrum estimation theory, our solution can acquire the super-resolution estimations of the AoAs/AoDs and delays of sparse multipath components with low training overhead. Simulation results verify the better CE performance and lower computational complexity of our solution over existing state-of-the-art approaches.

A Novel Multiple Classifier Generation and Combination Framework Based on Fuzzy Clustering and Individualized Ensemble Construction

Multiple classifier system (MCS) has become a successful alternative for improving classification performance. However, studies have shown inconsistent results for different MCSs, and it is often difficult to predict which MCS algorithm works the best on a particular problem. We believe that the two crucial steps of MCS - base classifier generation and multiple classifier combination, need to be designed coordinately to produce robust results. In this work, we show that for different testing instances, better classifiers may be trained from different subdomains of training instances including, for example, neighboring instances of the testing instance, or even instances far away from the testing instance. To utilize this intuition, we propose Individualized Classifier Ensemble (ICE). ICE groups training data into overlapping clusters, builds a classifier for each cluster, and then associates each training instance to the top-performing models while taking into account model types and frequency. In testing, ICE finds the k most similar training instances for a testing instance, then predicts class label of the testing instance by averaging the prediction from models associated with these training instances. Evaluation results on 49 benchmarks show that ICE has a stable improvement on a significant proportion of datasets over existing MCS methods. ICE provides a novel choice of utilizing internal patterns among instances to improve classification, and can be easily combined with various classification models and applied to many application domains.

Realization of a three-dimensional photonic topological insulator

Confining photons in a finite volume is in high demand in modern photonic devices. This motivated decades ago the invention of photonic crystals, featured with a photonic bandgap forbidding light propagation in all directions. Recently, inspired by the discoveries of topological insulators (TIs), the confinement of photons with topological protection has been demonstrated in two-dimensional (2D) photonic structures known as photonic TIs, with promising applications in topological lasers and robust optical delay lines. However, a fully three-dimensional (3D) topological photonic bandgap has never before been achieved. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a 3D photonic TI with an extremely wide (> 25% bandwidth) 3D topological bandgap. The sample consists of split-ring resonators (SRRs) with strong magneto-electric coupling and behaves as a 'weak TI', or a stack of 2D quantum spin Hall insulators. Using direct field measurements, we map out both the gapped bulk bandstructure and the Dirac-like dispersion of the photonic surface states, and demonstrate robust photonic propagation along a non-planar surface. Our work extends the family of 3D TIs from fermions to bosons and paves the way for applications in topological photonic cavities, circuits, and lasers in 3D geometries.

Topological triply-degenerate point with double Fermi arcs

Unconventional chiral particles have recently been predicted to appear in certain three dimensional (3D) crystal structures containing three- or more-fold linear band degeneracy points (BDPs). These BDPs carry topological charges, but are distinct from the standard twofold Weyl points or fourfold Dirac points, and cannot be described in terms of an emergent relativistic field theory. Here, we report on the experimental observation of a topological threefold BDP in a 3D phononic crystal. Using direct acoustic field mapping, we demonstrate the existence of the threefold BDP in the bulk bandstructure, as well as doubled Fermi arcs of surface states consistent with a topological charge of 2. Another novel BDP, similar to a Dirac point but carrying nonzero topological charge, is connected to the threefold BDP via the doubled Fermi arcs. These findings pave the way to using these unconventional particles for exploring new emergent physical phenomena.

User Fairness Non-orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) for 5G Millimeter-Wave Communications with Analog Beamforming

The integration of non-orthogonal multiple access in millimeter-Wave communications (mmWave-NOMA) can significantly improve the spectrum efficiency and increase the number of users in the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication. In this paper we consider a downlink mmWave-NOMA cellular system, where the base station is mounted with an analog beamforming phased array, and multiple users are served in the same time-frequency resource block. To guarantee user fairness, we formulate a joint beamforming and power allocation problem to maximize the minimal achievable rate among the users, i.e., we adopt the max-min fairness. As the problem is difficult to solve due to the non-convex formulation and high dimension of the optimization variables, we propose a sub-optimal solution, which makes use of the spatial sparsity in the angle domain of the mmWave channel. In the solution, the closed-form optimal power allocation is obtained first, which reduces the joint optimization problem into an equivalent beamforming problem. Then an appropriate beamforming vector is designed. Simulation results show that the proposed solution can achieve a near-upper-bound performance in terms of achievable rate, which is significantly better than that of the conventional mmWave orthogonal multiple access (mmWave-OMA) system.

Compressive Massive Random Access for Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC)

In future wireless networks, one fundamental challenge for massive machine-type communications (mMTC) lies in the reliable support of massive connectivity with low latency. Against this background, this paper proposes a compressive sensing (CS)-based massive random access scheme for mMTC by leveraging the inherent sporadic traffic, where both the active devices and their channels can be jointly estimated with low overhead. Specifically, we consider devices in the uplink massive random access adopt pseudo random pilots, which are designed under the framework of CS theory. Meanwhile, the massive random access at the base stations (BS) can be formulated as the sparse signal recovery problem by leveraging the sparse nature of active devices. Moreover, by exploiting the structured sparsity among different receiver antennas and subcarriers, we develop a distributed multiple measurement vector approximate message passing (DMMV-AMP) algorithm for further improved performance. Additionally, the state evolution (SE) of the proposed DMMV-AMP algorithm is derived to predict the performance. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme, which exhibits a good tightness with the theoretical SE.

Wideband Hybrid Precoding for Next-Generation Backhaul/Fronthaul Based on mmWave FD-MIMO

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered as an indispensable technique for the next-generation backhaul/fronthaul network thanks to its large transmission bandwidth. Especially for heterogeneous network (HetNet), the mmWave full-dimension (FD)-MIMO is exploited to establish the backhaul/fronthaul link between phantom-cell base stations (BSs) and macro-cell BSs, where an efficient precoding is prerequisite. Against this background, this paper proposes a principle component analysis (PCA)-based hybrid precoding for wideband mmWave MIMO backhaul/fronthaul channels. We first propose an optimal hybrid precoder by exploiting principal component analysis (PCA), whereby the optimal high dimensional frequency-selective precoder are projected to the low-dimensional frequency-flat precoder. Moreover, the combiner is designed by leveraging the weighted PCA, where the covariance of received signal is taken into account as weight to the optimal minimum mean square error (MMSE) fully-digital combiner for further improved performance. Simulations have confirmed that the proposed scheme outperforms conventional schemes in spectral efficiency (SE) and bit-error-rate (BER) performance.

Machine Learning Based Hybrid Precoding for MmWave MIMO-OFDM with Dynamic Subarray

Hybrid precoding design can be challenging for broadband millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO due to the frequency-flat analog precoder in radio frequency (RF). Prior broadband hybrid precoding work usually focuses on fully-connected array (FCA), while seldom considers the energy-efficient partially-connected subarray (PCS) including the fixed subarray (FS) and dynamic subarray (DS). Against this background, this paper proposes a machine learning based broadband hybrid precoding for mmWave massive MIMO with DS. Specifically, we first propose an optimal hybrid precoder based on principal component analysis (PCA) for the FS, whereby the frequency-flat RF precoder for each subarray is extracted from the principle component of the optimal frequency-selective precoders for fully-digital MIMO. Moreover, we extend the PCA-based hybrid precoding to DS, where a shared agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) algorithm developed from machine learning is proposed to group the DS for improved spectral efficiency (SE). Finally, we investigate the energy efficiency (EE) of the proposed scheme for both passive and active antennas. Simulations have confirmed that the proposed scheme outperforms conventional schemes in both SE and EE.

Super-resolution channel estimation for mmWave massive MIMO with hybrid precoding

Channel estimation is challenging for millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO with hybrid precoding, since the number of radio frequency (RF) chains is much smaller than that of antennas. Conventional compressive sensing based channel estimation schemes suffer from severe resolution loss due to the channel angle quantization. To improve the channel estimation accuracy, we propose an iterative reweight (IR)-based super-resolution channel estimation scheme in this paper. By optimizing an objective function through the gradient descent method, the proposed scheme can iteratively move the estimated angle of arrivals/departures (AoAs/AoDs) towards the optimal solutions, and finally realize the super-resolution channel estimation. In the optimization, a weight parameter is used to control the tradeoff between the sparsity and the data fitting error. In addition, a singular value decomposition (SVD)-based preconditioning is developed to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed scheme. Simulation results verify the better performance of the proposed scheme than conventional solutions.

Over-Sampling Codebook-Based Hybrid Minimum Sum-Mean-Square-Error Precoding for Millimeter-Wave 3D-MIMO

Hybrid precoding design is challenging for millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO. Most prior hybrid precoding schemes are designed to maximize the sum spectral efficiency (SSE), while seldom investigate the bit-error-rate (BER). Therefore, we propose an over-sampling codebook (OSC)-based hybrid minimum sum-mean-square-error (min-SMSE) precoding scheme for mmWave multi-user three-dimensional (3D)-MIMO systems to optimize the BER, where multi-user transmission with multiple data streams for each user is considered. Specifically, given the effective baseband channel consisting of the real channel and analog precoding, we first design the digital precoder/combiner based on min-SMSE criterion to optimize the BER. To further reduce the SMSE between the transmit and receive signals, we propose an OSC-based joint analog precoder/combiner (JAPC) design. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve the better performance than its conventional counterparts.

2D Unitary ESPRIT Based Super-Resolution Channel Estimation for Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO with Hybrid Precoding

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with hybrid precoding is a promising technique for the future 5G wireless communications. Due to a large number of antennas but a much smaller number of radio frequency (RF) chains, estimating the high-dimensional mmWave massive MIMO channel will bring the large pilot overhead. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a super-resolution channel estimation scheme based on two-dimensional (2D) u- nitary ESPRIT algorithm. By exploiting the angular sparsity of mmWave channels, the continuously distributed angle of arrivals/departures (AoAs/AoDs) can be jointly estimated with high accuracy. Specifically, by designing the uplink training signals at both base station (BS) and mobile station (MS), we first use low pilot overhead to estimate a low-dimensional effective channel, which has the same shift-invariance of array response as the high-dimensional mmWave MIMO channel to be estimated. From the low-dimensional effective channel, the super- resolution estimates of AoAs and AoDs can be jointly obtained by exploiting the 2D unitary ESPRIT channel estimation algorithm. Furthermore, the associated path gains can be acquired based on the least squares (LS) criterion. Finally, we can reconstruct the high-dimensional mmWave MIMO channel according to the obtained AoAs, AoDs, and path gains. Simulation results have confirmed that the proposed scheme is superior to conventional schemes with a much lower pilot overhead.
