Engineering Spin Splitting in Antiferromagnets by Superatoms with Internal Degree of Freedom

Superatoms, stable atomic clusters acting as building blocks for new materials, offer unique opportunities due to their rich properties and potential for 2D material assembly. While extensive research has focused on their similarities to ordinary atoms, the role of their internal degrees of freedom (IDOF) remains largely unexplored. Concurrently, compensated antiferromagnets (AFMs) with intrinsic spin-split band structures have emerged as a promising class of materials for spintronics, yet their experimental realization, particularly in two dimensions, is limited. Here, we bridge these two fields by proposing a novel strategy to achieve spin-split AFMs using superatoms with IDOFs. We establish our core concept using a simple model, demonstrating how superatom IDOFs can be leveraged to engineer system symmetry and induce spin splitting in AFM states. We concretely illustrate this strategy by first-principles calculations on a Mo-decorated carborophene sheets, constructed from closo-carborane superatoms. We show that the distinct IDOFs of carborane isomers (electric-dipole-like and nematic) are critical in determining the symmetry of the resulting 2D superatomic crystal and, consequently, the spin splitting pattern of its AFM states. Our findings underscore the profound significance of superatom IDOFs-a feature absent in ordinary atoms-and introduce a new paradigm for engineering spin splitting in AFM lattices. This work opens novel avenues for the design of advanced spintronic and quantum materials based on superatoms.

Token-Domain Multiple Access: Exploiting Semantic Orthogonality for Collision Mitigation

Token communications is an emerging generative semantic communication concept that reduces transmission rates by using context and transformer-based token processing, with tokens serving as universal semantic units. In this paper, we propose a semantic multiple access scheme in the token domain, referred to as ToDMA, where a large number of devices share a tokenizer and a modulation codebook for source and channel coding, respectively. Specifically, the source signal is tokenized into sequences, with each token modulated into a codeword. Codewords from multiple devices are transmitted simultaneously, resulting in overlap at the receiver. The receiver detects the transmitted tokens, assigns them to their respective sources, and mitigates token collisions by leveraging context and semantic orthogonality across the devices' messages. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed ToDMA framework outperforms context-unaware orthogonal and non-orthogonal communication methods in image transmission tasks, achieving lower latency and better image quality.

Text-Guided Token Communication for Wireless Image Transmission

With the emergence of 6G networks and proliferation of visual applications, efficient image transmission under adverse channel conditions is critical. We present a text-guided token communication system leveraging pre-trained foundation models for wireless image transmission with low bandwidth. Our approach converts images to discrete tokens, applies 5G NR polar coding, and employs text-guided token prediction for reconstruction. Evaluations on ImageNet show our method outperforms Deep Source Channel Coding with Attention Modules (ADJSCC) in perceptual quality and semantic preservation at Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) above 0 dB while mitigating the cliff effect at lower SNRs. Our system requires no scenario-specific retraining and exhibits superior cross-dataset generalization, establishing a new paradigm for efficient image transmission aligned with human perceptual priorities.

Distributed satellite information networks: Architecture, enabling technologies, and trends

Driven by the vision of ubiquitous connectivity and wireless intelligence, the evolution of ultra-dense constellation-based satellite-integrated Internet is underway, now taking preliminary shape. Nevertheless, the entrenched institutional silos and limited, nonrenewable heterogeneous network resources leave current satellite systems struggling to accommodate the escalating demands of next-generation intelligent applications. In this context, the distributed satellite information networks (DSIN), exemplified by the cohesive clustered satellites system, have emerged as an innovative architecture, bridging information gaps across diverse satellite systems, such as communication, navigation, and remote sensing, and establishing a unified, open information network paradigm to support resilient space information services. This survey first provides a profound discussion about innovative network architectures of DSIN, encompassing distributed regenerative satellite network architecture, distributed satellite computing network architecture, and reconfigurable satellite formation flying, to enable flexible and scalable communication, computing and control. The DSIN faces challenges from network heterogeneity, unpredictable channel dynamics, sparse resources, and decentralized collaboration frameworks. To address these issues, a series of enabling technologies is identified, including channel modeling and estimation, cloud-native distributed MIMO cooperation, grant-free massive access, network routing, and the proper combination of all these diversity techniques. Furthermore, to heighten the overall resource efficiency, the cross-layer optimization techniques are further developed to meet upper-layer deterministic, adaptive and secure information services requirements. In addition, emerging research directions and new opportunities are highlighted on the way to achieving the DSIN vision.

Residual Cross-Attention Transformer-Based Multi-User CSI Feedback with Deep Joint Source-Channel Coding

This letter proposes a deep-learning (DL)-based multi-user channel state information (CSI) feedback framework for massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, where the deep joint source-channel coding (DJSCC) is utilized to improve the CSI reconstruction accuracy. Specifically, we design a multi-user joint CSI feedback framework, whereby the CSI correlation of nearby users is utilized to reduce the feedback overhead. Under the framework, we propose a new residual cross-attention transformer architecture, which is deployed at the base station to further improve the CSI feedback performance. Moreover, to tackle the "cliff-effect" of conventional bit-level CSI feedback approaches, we integrated DJSCC into the multi-user CSI feedback, together with utilizing a two-stage training scheme to adapt to varying uplink noise levels. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our methods in CSI feedback performance, with low network complexity and better scalability.

Chirp Delay-Doppler Domain Modulation: A New Paradigm of Integrated Sensing and Communication for Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous driving is reshaping the way humans travel, with millimeter wave (mmWave) radar playing a crucial role in this transformation to enabe vehicle-to-everything (V2X). Although chirp is widely used in mmWave radar systems for its strong sensing capabilities, the lack of integrated communication functions in existing systems may limit further advancement of autonomous driving. In light of this, we first design ``dedicated chirps" tailored for sensing chirp signals in the environment, facilitating the identification of idle time-frequency resources. Based on these dedicated chirps, we propose a chirp-division multiple access (Chirp-DMA) scheme, enabling multiple pairs of mmWave radar transceivers to perform integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) without interference. Subsequently, we propose two chirp-based delay-Doppler domain modulation schemes that enable each pair of mmWave radar transceivers to simultaneously sense and communicate within their respective time-frequency resource blocks. The modulation schemes are based on different multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar schemes: the time division multiplexing (TDM)-based scheme offers higher communication rates, while the Doppler division multiplexing (DDM)-based scheme is suitable for working in a lower signal-to-noise ratio range. We then validate the effectiveness of the proposed DDM-based scheme through simulations. Finally, we present some challenges and issues that need to be addressed to advance ISAC in V2X for better autonomous driving. Sensing-Enhanced Channel Estimation for Near-Field XL-MIMO Systems

Future sixth-generation (6G) systems are expected to leverage extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) technology, which significantly expands the range of the near-field region. The spherical wavefront characteristics in the near field introduce additional degrees of freedom (DoFs), namely distance and angle, into the channel model, which leads to unique challenges in channel estimation (CE). In this paper, we propose a new sensing-enhanced uplink CE scheme for near-field XL-MIMO, which notably reduces the required quantity of baseband samples and the dictionary size. In particular, we first propose a sensing method that can be accomplished in a single time slot. It employs power sensors embedded within the antenna elements to measure the received power pattern rather than baseband samples. A time inversion algorithm is then proposed to precisely estimate the locations of users and scatterers, which offers a substantially lower computational complexity. Based on the estimated locations from sensing, a novel dictionary is then proposed by considering the eigen-problem based on the near-field transmission model, which facilitates efficient near-field CE with less baseband sampling and a more lightweight dictionary. Moreover, we derive the general form of the eigenvectors associated with the near-field channel matrix, revealing their noteworthy connection to the discrete prolate spheroidal sequence (DPSS). Simulation results unveil that the proposed time inversion algorithm achieves accurate localization with power measurements only, and remarkably outperforms various widely-adopted algorithms in terms of computational complexity. Furthermore, the proposed eigen-dictionary considerably improves the accuracy in CE with a compact dictionary size and a drastic reduction in baseband samples by up to 66%.

Three-dimensional topological disclination in acoustic crystals

Topological disclinations, crystallographic defects that break rotation lattice symmetry, have attracted great interest and exhibited wide applications in cavities, waveguides, and lasers. However, topological disclinations have thus far been predominantly restricted to two-dimensional (2D) systems owing to the substantial challenges in constructing such defects in three-dimensional (3D) systems and characterizing their topological features. Here we report the theoretical proposal and experimental demonstration of a 3D topological disclination that exhibits fractional (1/2) charge and zero-dimensional (0D) topological bound states, realized by cutting-and-gluing a 3D acoustic topological crystalline insulator. Using acoustic pump-probe measurements, we directly observe 0D topological disclination states at the disclination core, consistent with the tight-binding model and full-wave simulation results. Our results extend the research frontier of topological disclinations and open a new paradigm for exploring the interplay between momentum-space band topology and the real-space defect topology in 3D and higher dimensions.

Broadband Terahertz Frequency Comb Based on Actively Mode Locked Resonant Tunneling Diode

The frequency combs characterized by their phase-coherent equidistant spectral modes and precise frequency scales of broadband spectrum, have made them an indispensable part of contemporary physics. A terahertz (THz) frequency comb is a key asset for THz technology applications in spectroscopy, metrology, communications, and sensing. However, the THz frequency comb technologies are comparatively underdeveloped compared to the optical frequency domain, primarily attributed to the deficiency of advanced THz generation components. In this paper, we innovatively demonstrate a compact THz frequency comb source based on a resonant tunneling diode (RTD) through active mode locking technique. By injecting a strong continuous-wave radio frequency (RF) signal via the bias line into a RTD oscillator integrated within a WR-5 hollow metallic waveguide package, we observe a broadband comb spectrum spanning from 140 to 325 GHz. The mode spacing is directly determined by the frequency of the injected RF signal, providing a wide tuning range of approximately 40 GHz. We also employ the proposed frequency comb source as the local oscillator in a coherent transmitter. In particular, this is the first all-electrical compact THz frequency comb source, and the transmission demonstration paves the way to next-generation communication.

MmWave-LoRadar Empowered Vehicular Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems: LoRa Meets FMCW

The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technique is regarded as a key component in future vehicular applications. In this paper, we propose an ISAC solution that integrates Long Range (LoRa) modulation with frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band, called mmWave-LoRadar. This design introduces the sensing capabilities to the LoRa communication with a simplified hardware architecture. Particularly, we uncover the dual discontinuity issues in time and phase of the mmWave-LoRadar received signals, rendering conventional signal processing techniques ineffective. As a remedy, we propose a corresponding hardware design and signal processing schemes under the compressed sampling framework. These techniques effectively cope with the dual discontinuity issues and mitigate the demands for high-sampling-rate analog-to-digital converters while achieving good performance. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the mmWave-LoRadar ISAC system in vehicular communication and sensing networks.

Channel Fingerprint Construction for Massive MIMO: A Deep Conditional Generative Approach

Accurate channel state information (CSI) acquisition for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is essential for future mobile communication networks. Channel fingerprint (CF), also referred to as channel knowledge map, is a key enabler for intelligent environment-aware communication and can facilitate CSI acquisition. However, due to the cost limitations of practical sensing nodes and test vehicles, the resulting CF is typically coarse-grained, making it insufficient for wireless transceiver design. In this work, we introduce the concept of CF twins and design a conditional generative diffusion model (CGDM) with strong implicit prior learning capabilities as the computational core of the CF twin to establish the connection between coarse- and fine-grained CFs. Specifically, we employ a variational inference technique to derive the evidence lower bound (ELBO) for the log-marginal distribution of the observed fine-grained CF conditioned on the coarse-grained CF, enabling the CGDM to learn the complicated distribution of the target data. During the denoising neural network optimization, the coarse-grained CF is introduced as side information to accurately guide the conditioned generation of the CGDM. To make the proposed CGDM lightweight, we further leverage the additivity of network layers and introduce a one-shot pruning approach along with a multi-objective knowledge distillation technique. Experimental results show that the proposed approach exhibits significant improvement in reconstruction performance compared to the baselines. Additionally, zero-shot testing on reconstruction tasks with different magnification factors further demonstrates the scalability and generalization ability of the proposed approach.

Generative Semantic Communication via Textual Prompts: Latency Performance Tradeoffs

This paper develops an edge-device collaborative Generative Semantic Communications (Gen SemCom) framework leveraging pre-trained Multi-modal/Vision Language Models (M/VLMs) for ultra-low-rate semantic communication via textual prompts. The proposed framework optimizes the use of M/VLMs on the wireless edge/device to generate high-fidelity textual prompts through visual captioning/question answering, which are then transmitted over a wireless channel for SemCom. Specifically, we develop a multi-user Gen SemCom framework using pre-trained M/VLMs, and formulate a joint optimization problem of prompt generation offloading, communication and computation resource allocation to minimize the latency and maximize the resulting semantic quality. Due to the nonconvex nature of the problem with highly coupled discrete and continuous variables, we decompose it as a two-level problem and propose a low-complexity swap/leaving/joining (SLJ)-based matching algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate significant performance improvements over the conventional semanticunaware/non-collaborative offloading benchmarks.

Dynamic Transfer of Chiral Edge States in Topological Type-II Hyperbolic Lattices

The discovery of hyperbolic lattice, a discretized regularization of non-Euclidean space with constant negative curvature, has provided an unprecedented platform to extend topological phases of matter from Euclidean to non-Euclidean spaces. To date, however, all previous hyperbolic topological states are limited to conventional type-I hyperbolic lattice with a single edge, leaving the dynamic transfer of hyperbolic topological states between different edges completely unresolved. Here, by extending the hyperbolic topological physics from the conventional type-I hyperbolic lattices to the newfangled type-II hyperbolic lattices, we report the type-II hyperbolic Chern insulator featuring outer and inner chiral edge states and demonstrate their dynamic transfer across the bulk to the opposite edge via two distinct mechanisms: anti-parity-time phase transition and Landau-Zener single-band pumping. Our work lays the foundation for further exploring the dynamic evolution of hyperbolic topological effects, with the final goal of inspiring applications leveraging dynamic manipulations of the hyperbolic topological states.

Realization of a Dirac-vortex topological photonic crystal fiber

Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) that trap and guide light using photonic bandgaps have revolutionized modern optics with enormous scientific innovations and technological applications spanning many disciplines. Recently, inspired by the discovery of topological phases of matter, Dirac-vortex topological PCFs have been theoretically proposed with intriguing topological properties and unprecedented opportunities in optical fiber communications. However, due to the substantial challenges of fabrication and characterization, experimental demonstration of Dirac-vortex topological PCFs has thus far remained elusive. Here, we report the experimental realization of a Dirac-vortex topological PCF using the standard stack-and-draw fabrication process with silica glass capillaries. Moreover, we experimentally observe that Dirac-vortex single-polarization single-mode bounds to and propagates along the fiber core in the full communication window (1260-1675nm). Our study pushes the research frontier of PCFs and provides a new avenue to enhance their performance and functionality further.

Pre-Equalization Aided Grant-Free Massive Access in Massive MIMO System

The spatial diversity and multiplexing advantages of massive multi-input-multi-output (mMIMO) can significantly improve the capacity of massive non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in machine type communications. However, state-of-the-art grant-free massive NOMA schemes for mMIMO systems require accurate estimation of random access channels to perform activity detection and the following coherent data demodulation, which suffers from excessive pilot overhead and access latency. To address this, we propose a pre-equalization aided grant-free massive access scheme for mMIMO systems, where an iterative detection scheme is conceived. Specifically, the base station (BS) firstly activates one of its antennas (i.e., beacon antenna) to broadcast a beacon signal, which facilitates the user equipment (UEs) to perform downlink channel estimation and pre-equalize the uplink random access signal with respect to the channels associated with the beacon antenna. During the uplink transmission stage, the BS detects UEs' activity and data by using the proposed iterative detection algorithm, which consists of three modules: coarse data detection (DD), data-aided channel estimation (CE), and fine DD. In the proposed algorithm, the joint activity and DD is firstly performed based on the signals received by the beacon antenna. Subsequently, the DD is further refined by iteratively performing data-aided CE module and fine DD module using signals received by all BS antennas. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms state-of-the-art mMIMO-based grant-free massive NOMA schemes with the same access latency.
