RefineFace: Refinement Neural Network for High Performance Face Detection

Face detection has achieved significant progress in recent years. However, high performance face detection still remains a very challenging problem, especially when there exists many tiny faces. In this paper, we present a single-shot refinement face detector namely RefineFace to achieve high performance. Specifically, it consists of five modules: Selective Two-step Regression (STR), Selective Two-step Classification (STC), Scale-aware Margin Loss (SML), Feature Supervision Module (FSM) and Receptive Field Enhancement (RFE). To enhance the regression ability for high location accuracy, STR coarsely adjusts locations and sizes of anchors from high level detection layers to provide better initialization for subsequent regressor. To improve the classification ability for high recall efficiency, STC first filters out most simple negatives from low level detection layers to reduce search space for subsequent classifier, then SML is applied to better distinguish faces from background at various scales and FSM is introduced to let the backbone learn more discriminative features for classification. Besides, RFE is presented to provide more diverse receptive field to better capture faces in some extreme poses. Extensive experiments conducted on WIDER FACE, AFW, PASCAL Face, FDDB, MAFA demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art results and runs at $37.3$ FPS with ResNet-18 for VGA-resolution images.

On the Constantin-Lax-Majda Model with Convection

The well-known Constantin-Lax-Majda (CLM) equation, an important toy model of the 3D Euler equations without convection, can develop finite time singularities [5]. De Gregorio modified the CLM model by adding a convective term [6], which is known important for fluid dynamics [10,14]. Presented are two results on the De Gregorio model. The first one is the global well-posedness of such a model for general initial data with non-negative (or non-positive) vorticity which is based on a newly discovered conserved quantity. This verifies the numerical observations for such class of initial data. The second one is an exponential stability result of ground states, which is similar to the recent significant work of Jia, Steward and Sverak [11], with the zero mean constraint on the initial data being removable. The novelty of the method is the introduction of the new solution space $\mathcal{H}_{DW}$ together with a new basis and an effective inner product of $\mathcal{H}_{DW}$.

Vanishing Viscosity Limit for Incompressible Viscoelasticity in Two Dimensions

This paper studies the inviscid limit of the two-dimensional incompressible viscoelasticity, which is a system coupling a Navier-Stokes equation with a transport equation for the deformation tensor. The existence of global smooth solutions near the equilibrium with a fixed positive viscosity was known since the work of F. H. Lin, C. Liu, and P. Zhang in "On hydrodynamics of viscoelastic fluids". The inviscid case was solved recently by the second author Z. Lei. in "Global well-posedness of incompressible elastodynamics in two dimensions". While the latter was solely based on the techniques from the studies of hyperbolic equations, and hence the 2D problem is in general more challenge than that in higher dimensions, the former was relied crucially upon a dissipative mechanism. Indeed, after a symmetrization and a linearization around the equilibrium, the system of the incompressible viscoelasticity reduces to an incompressible system of damped wave equations for both the fluid velocity and the deformation tensor. These two approaches are not compatible. In this paper, we prove global existence of solutions, uniformly in both time $t \in [0, \infty)$ and viscosity $μ\geq 0$. This allows us to justify in particular the vanishing viscosity limit for all time. In order to overcome difficulties coming from the incompatibility between the purely hyperbolic limiting system and the systems with additional parabolic viscous perturbations, we introduce in this paper a rather robust method which may apply to a wide class of physical systems of similar nature. Roughly speaking, the method works in two dimensional case whenever the hyperbolic system satisfies intrinsically a "Strong Null Condition". For dimensions not less than three, the usual null condition is sufficient for this method to work.

Domain Adaptive Person Re-Identification via Camera Style Generation and Label Propagation

Unsupervised domain adaptation in person re-identification resorts to labeled source data to promote the model training on target domain, facing the dilemmas caused by large domain shift and large camera variations. The non-overlapping labels challenge that source domain and target domain have entirely different persons further increases the re-identification difficulty. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to narrow such domain gaps. We derive a camera style adaptation framework to learn the style-based mappings between different camera views, from the target domain to the source domain, and then we can transfer the identity-based distribution from the source domain to the target domain on the camera level. To overcome the non-overlapping labels challenge and guide the person re-identification model to narrow the gap further, an efficient and effective soft-labeling method is proposed to mine the intrinsic local structure of the target domain through building the connection between GAN-translated source domain and the target domain. Experiment results conducted on real benchmark datasets indicate that our method gets state-of-the-art results.

On ancient periodic solutions to Axially-Symmetric Navier-Stokes Equations

An old problem asks whether bounded mild ancient solutions of the 3 dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are constants. While the full 3 dimensional problem seems out of reach, in the works \cite{KNSS, SS09}, the authors expressed their belief that the following conjecture should be true. For incompressible axially-symmetric Navier-Stokes equations (ASNS) in three dimensions: \textit{bounded mild ancient solutions are constant}. Understanding of such solutions could play useful roles in the study of global regularity of solutions to the ASNS. In this article, we essentially prove this conjecture in the special case that $u$ is periodic in $z$. To the best of our knowledge, this seems to be the first result on this conjecture without unverified decay condition. It also shows that periodic solutions are not models of possible singularity or high velocity region. Some partial result in the non-periodic case is also given.

Semantic Alignment: Finding Semantically Consistent Ground-truth for Facial Landmark Detection

Recently, deep learning based facial landmark detection has achieved great success. Despite this, we notice that the semantic ambiguity greatly degrades the detection performance. Specifically, the semantic ambiguity means that some landmarks (e.g. those evenly distributed along the face contour) do not have clear and accurate definition, causing inconsistent annotations by annotators. Accordingly, these inconsistent annotations, which are usually provided by public databases, commonly work as the ground-truth to supervise network training, leading to the degraded accuracy. To our knowledge, little research has investigated this problem. In this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic model which introduces a latent variable, i.e. the 'real' ground-truth which is semantically consistent, to optimize. This framework couples two parts (1) training landmark detection CNN and (2) searching the 'real' ground-truth. These two parts are alternatively optimized: the searched 'real' ground-truth supervises the CNN training; and the trained CNN assists the searching of 'real' ground-truth. In addition, to recover the unconfidently predicted landmarks due to occlusion and low quality, we propose a global heatmap correction unit (GHCU) to correct outliers by considering the global face shape as a constraint. Extensive experiments on both image-based (300W and AFLW) and video-based (300-VW) databases demonstrate that our method effectively improves the landmark detection accuracy and achieves the state of the art performance.

Exploiting temporal and depth information for multi-frame face anti-spoofing

Face anti-spoofing is significant to the security of face recognition systems. Previous works on depth supervised learning have proved the effectiveness for face anti-spoofing. Nevertheless, they only considered the depth as an auxiliary supervision in the single frame. Different from these methods, we develop a new method to estimate depth information from multiple RGB frames and propose a depth-supervised architecture which can efficiently encodes spatiotemporal information for presentation attack detection. It includes two novel modules: optical flow guided feature block (OFFB) and convolution gated recurrent units (ConvGRU) module, which are designed to extract short-term and long-term motion to discriminate living and spoofing faces. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art results on four benchmark datasets, namely OULU-NPU, SiW, CASIA-MFSD, and Replay-Attack.

Large-scale Bisample Learning on ID Versus Spot Face Recognition

In real-world face recognition applications, there is a tremendous amount of data with two images for each person. One is an ID photo for face enrollment, and the other is a probe photo captured on spot. Most existing methods are designed for training data with limited breadth (a relatively small number of classes) and sufficient depth (many samples for each class). They would meet great challenges on ID versus Spot (IvS) data, including the under-represented intra-class variations and an excessive demand on computing devices. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based large-scale bisample learning (LBL) method for IvS face recognition. To tackle the bisample problem with only two samples for each class, a classification-verification-classification (CVC) training strategy is proposed to progressively enhance the IvS performance. Besides, a dominant prototype softmax (DP-softmax) is incorporated to make the deep learning scalable on large-scale classes. We conduct LBL on a IvS face dataset with more than two million identities. Experimental results show the proposed method achieves superior performance to previous ones, validating the effectiveness of LBL on IvS face recognition.

FaceBoxes: A CPU Real-time Face Detector with High Accuracy

Although tremendous strides have been made in face detection, one of the remaining open challenges is to achieve real-time speed on the CPU as well as maintain high performance, since effective models for face detection tend to be computationally prohibitive. To address this challenge, we propose a novel face detector, named FaceBoxes, with superior performance on both speed and accuracy. Specifically, our method has a lightweight yet powerful network structure that consists of the Rapidly Digested Convolutional Layers (RDCL) and the Multiple Scale Convolutional Layers (MSCL). The RDCL is designed to enable FaceBoxes to achieve real-time speed on the CPU. The MSCL aims at enriching the receptive fields and discretizing anchors over different layers to handle faces of various scales. Besides, we propose a new anchor densification strategy to make different types of anchors have the same density on the image, which significantly improves the recall rate of small faces. As a consequence, the proposed detector runs at 20 FPS on a single CPU core and 125 FPS using a GPU for VGA-resolution images. Moreover, the speed of FaceBoxes is invariant to the number of faces. We comprehensively evaluate this method and present state-of-the-art detection performance on several face detection benchmark datasets, including the AFW, PASCAL face, and FDDB. Recurrent Calibration Network for Irregular Text Recognition

Scene text recognition has received increased attention in the research community. Text in the wild often possesses irregular arrangements, typically including perspective text, curved text, oriented text. Most existing methods are hard to work well for irregular text, especially for severely distorted text. In this paper, we propose a novel Recurrent Calibration Network (RCN) for irregular scene text recognition. The RCN progressively calibrates the irregular text to boost the recognition performance. By decomposing the calibration process into multiple steps, the irregular text can be calibrated to normal one step by step. Besides, in order to avoid the accumulation of lost information caused by inaccurate transformation, we further design a fiducial-point refinement structure to keep the integrity of text during the recurrent process. Instead of the calibrated images, the coordinates of fiducial points are tracked and refined, which implicitly models the transformation information. Based on the refined fiducial points, we estimate the transformation parameters and sample from the original image at each step. In this way, the original character information is preserved until the final transformation. Such designs lead to optimal calibration results to boost the performance of succeeding recognition. Extensive experiments on challenging datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method, especially on irregular benchmarks.

Representation based and Attention augmented Meta learning

Deep learning based computer vision fails to work when labeled images are scarce. Recently, Meta learning algorithm has been confirmed as a promising way to improve the ability of learning from few images for computer vision. However, previous Meta learning approaches expose problems: 1) they ignored the importance of attention mechanism for the Meta learner; 2) they didn't give the Meta learner the ability of well using the past knowledge which can help to express images into high representations, resulting in that the Meta learner has to solve few shot learning task directly from the original high dimensional RGB images. In this paper, we argue that the attention mechanism and the past knowledge are crucial for the Meta learner, and the Meta learner should be trained on high representations of the RGB images instead of directly on the original ones. Based on these arguments, we propose two methods: Attention augmented Meta Learning (AML) and Representation based and Attention augmented Meta Learning(RAML). The method AML aims to improve the Meta learner's attention ability by explicitly embedding an attention model into its network. The method RAML aims to give the Meta learner the ability of leveraging the past learned knowledge to reduce the dimension of the original input data by expressing it into high representations, and help the Meta learner to perform well. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed models, with state-of-the-art few shot learning performances on several few shot learning benchmarks. The source code of our proposed methods will be released soon to facilitate further studies on those aforementioned problem.

Vehicle Re-identification Using Quadruple Directional Deep Learning Features

In order to resist the adverse effect of viewpoint variations for improving vehicle re-identification performance, we design quadruple directional deep learning networks to extract quadruple directional deep learning features (QD-DLF) of vehicle images. The quadruple directional deep learning networks are with similar overall architecture, including the same basic deep learning architecture but different directional feature pooling layers. Specifically, the same basic deep learning architecture is a shortly and densely connected convolutional neural network to extract basic feature maps of an input square vehicle image in the first stage. Then, the quadruple directional deep learning networks utilize different directional pooling layers, i.e., horizontal average pooling (HAP) layer, vertical average pooling (VAP) layer, diagonal average pooling (DAP) layer and anti-diagonal average pooling (AAP) layer, to compress the basic feature maps into horizontal, vertical, diagonal and anti-diagonal directional feature maps, respectively. Finally, these directional feature maps are spatially normalized and concatenated together as a quadruple directional deep learning feature for vehicle re-identification. Extensive experiments on both VeRi and VehicleID databases show that the proposed QD-DLF approach outperforms multiple state-of-the-art vehicle re-identification methods.

Selective Refinement Network for High Performance Face Detection

High performance face detection remains a very challenging problem, especially when there exists many tiny faces. This paper presents a novel single-shot face detector, named Selective Refinement Network (SRN), which introduces novel two-step classification and regression operations selectively into an anchor-based face detector to reduce false positives and improve location accuracy simultaneously. In particular, the SRN consists of two modules: the Selective Two-step Classification (STC) module and the Selective Two-step Regression (STR) module. The STC aims to filter out most simple negative anchors from low level detection layers to reduce the search space for the subsequent classifier, while the STR is designed to coarsely adjust the locations and sizes of anchors from high level detection layers to provide better initialization for the subsequent regressor. Moreover, we design a Receptive Field Enhancement (RFE) block to provide more diverse receptive field, which helps to better capture faces in some extreme poses. As a consequence, the proposed SRN detector achieves state-of-the-art performance on all the widely used face detection benchmarks, including AFW, PASCAL face, FDDB, and WIDER FACE datasets. Codes will be released to facilitate further studies on the face detection problem.

Occlusion-aware R-CNN: Detecting Pedestrians in a Crowd

Pedestrian detection in crowded scenes is a challenging problem since the pedestrians often gather together and occlude each other. In this paper, we propose a new occlusion-aware R-CNN (OR-CNN) to improve the detection accuracy in the crowd. Specifically, we design a new aggregation loss to enforce proposals to be close and locate compactly to the corresponding objects. Meanwhile, we use a new part occlusion-aware region of interest (PORoI) pooling unit to replace the RoI pooling layer in order to integrate the prior structure information of human body with visibility prediction into the network to handle occlusion. Our detector is trained in an end-to-end fashion, which achieves state-of-the-art results on three pedestrian detection datasets, i.e., CityPersons, ETH, and INRIA, and performs on-pair with the state-of-the-arts on Caltech.

Ensemble Soft-Margin Softmax Loss for Image Classification

Softmax loss is arguably one of the most popular losses to train CNN models for image classification. However, recent works have exposed its limitation on feature discriminability. This paper casts a new viewpoint on the weakness of softmax loss. On the one hand, the CNN features learned using the softmax loss are often inadequately discriminative. We hence introduce a soft-margin softmax function to explicitly encourage the discrimination between different classes. On the other hand, the learned classifier of softmax loss is weak. We propose to assemble multiple these weak classifiers to a strong one, inspired by the recognition that the diversity among weak classifiers is critical to a good ensemble. To achieve the diversity, we adopt the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC). Considering these two aspects in one framework, we design a novel loss, named as Ensemble soft-Margin Softmax (EM-Softmax). Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets are conducted to show the superiority of our design over the baseline softmax loss and several state-of-the-art alternatives.

Single-Shot Refinement Neural Network for Object Detection

For object detection, the two-stage approach (e.g., Faster R-CNN) has been achieving the highest accuracy, whereas the one-stage approach (e.g., SSD) has the advantage of high efficiency. To inherit the merits of both while overcoming their disadvantages, in this paper, we propose a novel single-shot based detector, called RefineDet, that achieves better accuracy than two-stage methods and maintains comparable efficiency of one-stage methods. RefineDet consists of two inter-connected modules, namely, the anchor refinement module and the object detection module. Specifically, the former aims to (1) filter out negative anchors to reduce search space for the classifier, and (2) coarsely adjust the locations and sizes of anchors to provide better initialization for the subsequent regressor. The latter module takes the refined anchors as the input from the former to further improve the regression and predict multi-class label. Meanwhile, we design a transfer connection block to transfer the features in the anchor refinement module to predict locations, sizes and class labels of objects in the object detection module. The multi-task loss function enables us to train the whole network in an end-to-end way. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC 2007, PASCAL VOC 2012, and MS COCO demonstrate that RefineDet achieves state-of-the-art detection accuracy with high efficiency. Global Well-posedness for 2D Nonlinear Wave Equations without Compact Support

In the significant work of [2], Alinhac proved the global existence of small solutions for 2D quasilinear wave equations under the null conditions. The proof heavily relies on the fact that the initial data have compact support [22]. Whether this constraint can be removed or not is still unclear. In this paper, for fully nonlinear wave equations under the null conditions, we prove the global well-posedness for small initial data without compact support. Moreover, we apply our result to a class of quasilinear wave equations.
