Coordinating Flexible Demand Response and Renewable Uncertainties for Scheduling of Community Integrated Energy Systems with an Electric Vehicle Charging Station: A Bi-level Approach

A community integrated energy system (CIES) with an electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) provides a new way for tackling growing concerns of energy efficiency and environmental pollution, it is a critical task to coordinate flexible demand response and multiple renewable uncertainties. To this end, a novel bi-level optimal dispatching model for the CIES with an EVCS in multi-stakeholder scenarios is established in this paper. In this model, an integrated demand response program is designed to promote a balance between energy supply and demand while maintaining a user comprehensive satisfaction within an acceptable range. To further tap the potential of demand response through flexibly guiding users' energy consumption and electric vehicles' behaviors (charging, discharging and providing spinning reserves), a dynamic pricing mechanism combining time-of-use and real-time pricing is put forward. In the solution phase, by using sequence operation theory (SOT), the original chance-constrained programming (CCP) model is converted into a readily solvable mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation and finally solved by CPLEX solver. The simulation results on a practical CIES located in North China demonstrate that the presented method manages to balance the interests between CIES and EVCS via the coordination of flexible demand response and uncertain renewables.

Vacuum-gap transmon qubits realized using flip-chip technology

Significant progress has been made in building large-scale superconducting quantum processors based on flip-chip technology. In this work, we use the flip-chip technology to realize a modified transmon qubit, donated as the "flipmon", whose large shunt capacitor is replaced by a vacuum-gap parallel plate capacitor. To further reduce the qubit footprint, we place one of the qubit pads and a single Josephson junction on the bottom chip and the other pad on the top chip which is galvanically connected with the single Josephson junction through an indium bump. The electric field participation ratio can arrive at nearly 53% in air when the vacuum-gap is about 5 microns, and thus potentially leading to a lower dielectric loss. The coherence times of the flipmons are measured in the range of 30-60 microseconds, which are comparable with that of traditional transmons with similar fabrication processes. The electric field simulation indicates that the metal-air interface's participation ratio increases significantly and may dominate the qubit's decoherence. This suggests that more careful surface treatment needs to be considered. No evidence shows that the indium bumps inside the flipmons cause significant decoherence. With well-designed geometry and good surface treatment, the coherence of the flipmons can be further improved.

Focus on Local: Detecting Lane Marker from Bottom Up via Key Point

Mainstream lane marker detection methods are implemented by predicting the overall structure and deriving parametric curves through post-processing. Complex lane line shapes require high-dimensional output of CNNs to model global structures, which further increases the demand for model capacity and training data. In contrast, the locality of a lane marker has finite geometric variations and spatial coverage. We propose a novel lane marker detection solution, FOLOLane, that focuses on modeling local patterns and achieving prediction of global structures in a bottom-up manner. Specifically, the CNN models lowcomplexity local patterns with two separate heads, the first one predicts the existence of key points, and the second refines the location of key points in the local range and correlates key points of the same lane line. The locality of the task is consistent with the limited FOV of the feature in CNN, which in turn leads to more stable training and better generalization. In addition, an efficiency-oriented decoding algorithm was proposed as well as a greedy one, which achieving 36% runtime gains at the cost of negligible performance degradation. Both of the two decoders integrated local information into the global geometry of lane markers. In the absence of a complex network architecture design, the proposed method greatly outperforms all existing methods on public datasets while achieving the best state-of-the-art results and real-time processing simultaneously.

Transmon qubit with relaxation time exceeding 0.5 milliseconds

By using the dry etching process of tantalum (Ta) film, we had obtained transmon qubit with the best lifetime (T1) 503 us, suggesting that the dry etching process can be adopted in the following multi-qubit fabrication with Ta film. We also compared the relaxation and coherence times of transmons made with different materials (Ta, Nb and Al) with the same design and fabrication processes of Josephson junction, we found that samples prepared with Ta film had the best performance, followed by those with Al film and Nb film. We inferred that the reason for this difference was due to the different loss of oxide materials located at the metal-air interface.

High-dimensional percolation criticality and hints of mean-field-like caging of the random Lorentz gas

The random Lorentz gas (RLG) is a minimal model for transport in disordered media. Despite the broad relevance of the model, theoretical grasp over its properties remains weak. For instance, the scaling with dimension d of its localization transition at the void percolation threshold is not well controlled analytically nor computationally. A recent study [Biroli et al. Phys. Rev. E L030104 (2021)] of the caging behavior of the RLG motivated by the mean-field theory of glasses has uncovered physical inconsistencies in that scaling that heighten the need for guidance. Here, we first extend analytical expectations for asymptotic high-d bounds on the void percolation threshold, and then computationally evaluate both the threshold and its criticality in various d. In high-d systems, we observe that the standard percolation physics is complemented by a dynamical slowdown of the tracer dynamics reminiscent of mean-field caging. A simple modification of the RLG is found to bring the interplay between percolation and mean-field-like caging down to d=3.

Bi-GCN: Binary Graph Convolutional Network

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved tremendous success in graph representation learning. Unfortunately, current GNNs usually rely on loading the entire attributed graph into network for processing. This implicit assumption may not be satisfied with limited memory resources, especially when the attributed graph is large. In this paper, we pioneer to propose a Binary Graph Convolutional Network (Bi-GCN), which binarizes both the network parameters and input node features. Besides, the original matrix multiplications are revised to binary operations for accelerations. According to the theoretical analysis, our Bi-GCN can reduce the memory consumption by an average of ~30x for both the network parameters and input data, and accelerate the inference speed by an average of ~47x, on the citation networks. Meanwhile, we also design a new gradient approximation based back-propagation method to train our Bi-GCN well. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that our Bi-GCN can give a comparable performance compared to the full-precision baselines. Besides, our binarization approach can be easily applied to other GNNs, which has been verified in the experiments.

A Multi-Modal Transformer-based Code Summarization Approach for Smart Contracts

Code comment has been an important part of computer programs, greatly facilitating the understanding and maintenance of source code. However, high-quality code comments are often unavailable in smart contracts, the increasingly popular programs that run on the blockchain. In this paper, we propose a Multi-Modal Transformer-based (MMTrans) code summarization approach for smart contracts. Specifically, the MMTrans learns the representation of source code from the two heterogeneous modalities of the Abstract Syntax Tree (AST), i.e., Structure-based Traversal (SBT) sequences and graphs. The SBT sequence provides the global semantic information of AST, while the graph convolution focuses on the local details. The MMTrans uses two encoders to extract both global and local semantic information from the two modalities respectively, and then uses a joint decoder to generate code comments. Both the encoders and the decoder employ the multi-head attention structure of the Transformer to enhance the ability to capture the long-range dependencies between code tokens. We build a dataset with over 300K pairs of smart contracts, and evaluate the MMTrans on it. The experimental results demonstrate that the MMTrans outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines in terms of four evaluation metrics by a substantial margin, and can generate higher quality comments.

FlowMOT: 3D Multi-Object Tracking by Scene Flow Association

Most end-to-end Multi-Object Tracking (MOT) methods face the problems of low accuracy and poor generalization ability. Although traditional filter-based methods can achieve better results, they are difficult to be endowed with optimal hyperparameters and often fail in varying scenarios. To alleviate these drawbacks, we propose a LiDAR-based 3D MOT framework named FlowMOT, which integrates point-wise motion information with the traditional matching algorithm, enhancing the robustness of the motion prediction. We firstly utilize a scene flow estimation network to obtain implicit motion information between two adjacent frames and calculate the predicted detection for each old tracklet in the previous frame. Then we use Hungarian algorithm to generate optimal matching relations with the ID propagation strategy to finish the tracking task. Experiments on KITTI MOT dataset show that our approach outperforms recent end-to-end methods and achieves competitive performance with the state-of-the-art filter-based method. In addition, ours can work steadily in the various-speed scenarios where the filter-based methods may fail.

Scaling behavior of fracture properties of tough adhesive hydrogels

Tough adhesive hydrogels find broad applications in engineering and medicine. Such hydrogels feature high resistance against both cohesion and adhesion failure. The superior fracture properties may, however, deteriorate when the hydrogels swell upon exposure of water. The underlying correlation between the polymer fraction and fracture properties of tough adhesive hydrogels remains largely unexplored. Here we study how the cohesion and adhesion energies of a tough adhesive hydrogel evolve with the swelling process. The results reveal a similar scaling law of the two quantities on the polymer fraction. Our scaling analysis and computational study reveal that it stems from the scaling of shear modulus. The study will promote the investigation of scaling of hydrogel fracture and provide development guidelines for new tough adhesive hydrogels.

Manual-Label Free 3D Detection via An Open-Source Simulator

LiDAR based 3D object detectors typically need a large amount of detailed-labeled point cloud data for training, but these detailed labels are commonly expensive to acquire. In this paper, we propose a manual-label free 3D detection algorithm that leverages the CARLA simulator to generate a large amount of self-labeled training samples and introduces a novel Domain Adaptive VoxelNet (DA-VoxelNet) that can cross the distribution gap from the synthetic data to the real scenario. The self-labeled training samples are generated by a set of high quality 3D models embedded in a CARLA simulator and a proposed LiDAR-guided sampling algorithm. Then a DA-VoxelNet that integrates both a sample-level DA module and an anchor-level DA module is proposed to enable the detector trained by the synthetic data to adapt to real scenario. Experimental results show that the proposed unsupervised DA 3D detector on KITTI evaluation set can achieve 76.66% and 56.64% mAP on BEV mode and 3D mode respectively. The results reveal a promising perspective of training a LIDAR-based 3D detector without any hand-tagged label.

Realisation of adiabatic and diabatic CZ gates in superconducting qubits coupled with a tunable coupler

High fidelity two-qubit gates are fundamental for scaling up the superconducting number. We use two qubits coupled via a frequency-tunable coupler which can adjust the coupling strength, and demonstrate the CZ gate using two different schemes, adiabatic and diabatic methods. The Clifford based Randomized Benchmarking (RB) method is used to assess and optimize the CZ gate fidelity. The fidelity of adiabatic and diabatic CZ gates are 99.53(8)% and 98.72(2)%, respectively. We also analyze the errors induced by the decoherence. Comparing to 30 ns duration time of adiabatic CZ gate, the duration time of diabatic CZ gate is 19 ns, revealing lower incoherence error rate $r'_{\rm{incoherent, int}}$ = 0.0197(5) than $r_{\rm{incoherent, int}}$ = 0.0223(3).

Universal Multi-Source Domain Adaptation

Unsupervised domain adaptation enables intelligent models to transfer knowledge from a labeled source domain to a similar but unlabeled target domain. Recent study reveals that knowledge can be transferred from one source domain to another unknown target domain, called Universal Domain Adaptation (UDA). However, in the real-world application, there are often more than one source domain to be exploited for domain adaptation. In this paper, we formally propose a more general domain adaptation setting, universal multi-source domain adaptation (UMDA), where the label sets of multiple source domains can be different and the label set of target domain is completely unknown. The main challenges in UMDA are to identify the common label set between each source domain and target domain, and to keep the model scalable as the number of source domains increases. To address these challenges, we propose a universal multi-source adaptation network (UMAN) to solve the domain adaptation problem without increasing the complexity of the model in various UMDA settings. In UMAN, we estimate the reliability of each known class in the common label set via the prediction margin, which helps adversarial training to better align the distributions of multiple source domains and target domain in the common label set. Moreover, the theoretical guarantee for UMAN is also provided. Massive experimental results show that existing UDA and multi-source DA (MDA) methods cannot be directly applied to UMDA and the proposed UMAN achieves the state-of-the-art performance in various UMDA settings.

Multiple Sclerosis Severity Classification From Clinical Text

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory and degenerative neurological disease, which is monitored by a specialist using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and recorded in unstructured text in the form of a neurology consult note. An EDSS measurement contains an overall "EDSS" score and several functional subscores. Typically, expert knowledge is required to interpret consult notes and generate these scores. Previous approaches used limited context length Word2Vec embeddings and keyword searches to predict scores given a consult note, but often failed when scores were not explicitly stated. In this work, we present MS-BERT, the first publicly available transformer model trained on real clinical data other than MIMIC. Next, we present MSBC, a classifier that applies MS-BERT to generate embeddings and predict EDSS and functional subscores. Lastly, we explore combining MSBC with other models through the use of Snorkel to generate scores for unlabelled consult notes. MSBC achieves state-of-the-art performance on all metrics and prediction tasks and outperforms the models generated from the Snorkel ensemble. We improve Macro-F1 by 0.12 (to 0.88) for predicting EDSS and on average by 0.29 (to 0.63) for predicting functional subscores over previous Word2Vec CNN and rule-based approaches.

Characterize noise correlation and enhance coherence via qubit motion

The identification of spacial noise correlation is of critical importance in developing error-corrected quantum devices, but it has barely been studied so far. In this work, we utilize an effective new method called qubit motion, to efficiently determine the noise correlations between any pair of qubits in a 7-qubit superconducting quantum system. The noise correlations between the same pairs of qubits are also investigated when the qubits are at distinct operating frequencies. What's more, in this multi-qubit system with the presence of noise correlations, we demonstrate the enhancing effect of qubit motion on the coherence of logic qubit, and we propose a Motion-CPMG operation sequence to more efficiently protect the logic state from decoherence, which is experimentally demonstrated to extend the decoherence time of logic qubit by nearly one order of magnitude.

Unveiling Class-Labeling Structure for Universal Domain Adaptation

As a more practical setting for unsupervised domain adaptation, Universal Domain Adaptation (UDA) is recently introduced, where the target label set is unknown. One of the big challenges in UDA is how to determine the common label set shared by source and target domains, as there is simply no labeling available in the target domain. In this paper, we employ a probabilistic approach for locating the common label set, where each source class may come from the common label set with a probability. In particular, we propose a novel approach for evaluating the probability of each source class from the common label set, where this probability is computed by the prediction margin accumulated over the whole target domain. Then, we propose a simple universal adaptation network (S-UAN) by incorporating the probabilistic structure for the common label set. Finally, we analyse the generalization bound focusing on the common label set and explore the properties on the target risk for UDA. Extensive experiments indicate that S-UAN works well in different UDA settings and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by large margins.

Optimized Energy and Information Relaying in Self-Sustainable IRS-Empowered WPCN

This paper proposes a hybrid-relaying scheme empowered by a self-sustainable intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a wireless powered communication network (WPCN), to simultaneously improve the performance of downlink energy transfer (ET) from a hybrid access point (HAP) to multiple users and uplink information transmission (IT) from users to the HAP. We propose time-switching (TS) and power-splitting (PS) schemes for the IRS, where the IRS can harvest energy from the HAP's signals by switching between energy harvesting and signal reflection in the TS scheme or adjusting its reflection amplitude in the PS scheme. For both the TS and PS schemes, we formulate the sum-rate maximization problems by jointly optimizing the IRS's phase shifts for both ET and IT and network resource allocation. To address each problem's non-convexity, we propose a two-step algorithm to obtain the near-optimal solution with high accuracy. To show the structure of resource allocation, we also investigate the optimal solutions for the schemes with random phase shifts. Through numerical results, we show that our proposed schemes can achieve significant system sum-rate gain compared to the baseline scheme without IRS.

Code-switching pre-training for neural machine translation

This paper proposes a new pre-training method, called Code-Switching Pre-training (CSP for short) for Neural Machine Translation (NMT). Unlike traditional pre-training method which randomly masks some fragments of the input sentence, the proposed CSP randomly replaces some words in the source sentence with their translation words in the target language. Specifically, we firstly perform lexicon induction with unsupervised word embedding mapping between the source and target languages, and then randomly replace some words in the input sentence with their translation words according to the extracted translation lexicons. CSP adopts the encoder-decoder framework: its encoder takes the code-mixed sentence as input, and its decoder predicts the replaced fragment of the input sentence. In this way, CSP is able to pre-train the NMT model by explicitly making the most of the cross-lingual alignment information extracted from the source and target monolingual corpus. Additionally, we relieve the pretrain-finetune discrepancy caused by the artificial symbols like [mask]. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct extensive experiments on unsupervised and supervised NMT. Experimental results show that CSP achieves significant improvements over baselines without pre-training or with other pre-training methods.

Understanding Negative Sampling in Graph Representation Learning

Graph representation learning has been extensively studied in recent years. Despite its potential in generating continuous embeddings for various networks, both the effectiveness and efficiency to infer high-quality representations toward large corpus of nodes are still challenging. Sampling is a critical point to achieve the performance goals. Prior arts usually focus on sampling positive node pairs, while the strategy for negative sampling is left insufficiently explored. To bridge the gap, we systematically analyze the role of negative sampling from the perspectives of both objective and risk, theoretically demonstrating that negative sampling is as important as positive sampling in determining the optimization objective and the resulted variance. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to derive the theory and quantify that the negative sampling distribution should be positively but sub-linearly correlated to their positive sampling distribution. With the guidance of the theory, we propose MCNS, approximating the positive distribution with self-contrast approximation and accelerating negative sampling by Metropolis-Hastings. We evaluate our method on 5 datasets that cover extensive downstream graph learning tasks, including link prediction, node classification and personalized recommendation, on a total of 19 experimental settings. These relatively comprehensive experimental results demonstrate its robustness and superiorities.
