Acoustic wave propagation in an one-dimensional layered system

Propagation of acoustic waves in an one-dimensional water duct containing many air filled blocks is studied by the transfer matrix formalism. Energy distribution and interface vibration of the air blocks are computed. For periodic arrangement band structure and transmission rate are calculated analytically, whereas the Lyapunov exponent and its variance are computed numerically for random situations. A distinct collective behavior for localized waves is found. The results are also compared with optical situations.

Localization of acoustic waves in 1D random liquid media

We study acoustic propagation in one dimensional water ducts containing many air-filled blocks. The acoustic band structures for the periodic arrangements of the blocks is calculated, whereas the transmission for various random configurations of the blocks is computed by the transfer matrix method. It is shown that waves at all frequencies become localized even with a small amount of randomness. The spatial distribution of the localized energy is investigated, and is shown not to be trapped near the source, contrary to higher dimensional cases. The results also reveal a distinct collective behaviour for localized waves, a feature useful for distinguishing the localization from the residual absorption effect.

Coherence in a coupled network: Implication for brain function

In many body systems, constituents interact with each other, forming a recursive pattern of mutual interaction and giving rise to many interesting phenomena. Based upon concepts of the modern many body theory, a model for a generic many body system is developed. A novel approach is used to investigate the general features in such a system. An interesting phase transition in the system is found. Possible link to brain dynamics is discussed. It is shown how some of the basic brain processes, such as learning and memory, find therein a natural explanation.

Phase Transition and Acoustic Localization in Arrays of Air-Bubbles in Water

Wave localization is a ubiquitous phenomenon. It refers to situations that transmitted waves in scattering media are trapped in space and remain confined in the vicinity of the initial site until dissipated. Here we report a phase transition from acoustically extended to localized states in arrays of identical air-filled bubbles in water. It is shown that the acoustic localization in such media is coincident with the complete band gap of a lattice arrangement of the air-bubbles. When the localization or the band gap occurs, a peculiar collective behavior of the bubbles appears.

Band Gaps and Localization in Acoustic Propagation in Water with Air-cylinders

Multiple scattering of waves leads to many peculiar phenomena such as complete band gaps in periodic structures and wave localization in disordered media. Within a band gap excitations are evanescent; when localized they remain confined in space until dissipated. Here we report acoustic band gap and localization in a 2D system of air-cylinders in water. Exact numerical calculations reveal the unexpected result that localization is relatively independent of the precise location or organization of the scatterers. Localization occurs within a finite region of frequencies, coincident with the complete band gap predicted by a conventional band structure calculation for a periodic lattice of scatterers. Inside the gap or localization regime, a previously uninvestigated stable collective behavior of the cylinders appears.

A Phase transition in acoustic propagation in 2D random liquid media

Acoustic wave propagation in liquid media containing many parallel air-filled cylinders is considered. A self-consistent method is used to compute rigorously the propagation, incorporating all orders of multiple scattering. It is shown that under proper conditions, multiple scattering leads to a peculiar phase transition in acoustic propagation. When the phase transition occurs, a collective behavior of the cylinders appears and the acoustic waves are confined in a region of space in the neighborhood of the transmission source. A novel phase diagram is used to describe such phase transition. Originally submitted on April 6, 99.

On localization of acoustic waves

The paper presents a discussion on localization of acoustic waves. Some important questions about wave localization are addressed. Particular attention is paid to acoustic localization in liquid media containing many air-filled bubbles. It is shown that an amazing collective behavior appears when localization occurs. The study sheds new light to the much discussed subject.
