Negative shocks versus static patch holography

We study a version of de Sitter static patch holography in which the Euclidean gravitational path integral, with an observer worldline included, is conjectured to compute a trace. Motivated by recent evidence for this conjecture from the sphere path integral, we test it further by inserting operators along the observer worldline and computing two-point functions and out-of-time-ordered four-point correlators (OTOCs). We extend an earlier OTOC calculation by Kolchmeyer and Liu using the shockwave formalism, incorporating both observer recoil and gravitational backreaction. We find that the OTOC conflicts with two basic properties of a trace in a Hilbert space: cyclicity and positivity. The signaling feature of the shockwave geometry gives rise to two distinct resummations of the perturbative eikonal expansion, which are interchanged by cyclicity. Positivity is violated by the fact that the leading perturbative contribution causes the (regularized) OTOC to increase.

Quantum Channel Capacity of Traversable Wormhole

We formulate the Gao-Jafferis-Wall traversable wormhole protocol as a quantum channel and compute its quantum channel capacity. We show that this capacity is governed by the time derivative of an out-of-time-ordered correlator, hence by operator size growth in the holographic dual, and that its growth is bounded above by the Einstein gravity limit. The channel capacity therefore provides a natural benchmark for quantum simulations of traversable wormholes.

On the phase of the de Sitter density of states

The one-loop gravitational path integral around Euclidean de Sitter space $S^D$ has a complex phase that casts doubt on a state counting interpretation. Recently, it was proposed to cancel this phase by including an observer. We explore this proposal in the case where the observer is a charged black hole in equilibrium with the de Sitter horizon. We compute the phase of the one-loop determinant within a two-dimensional dilaton gravity reduction, using both numerical and analytical methods. Our results interpolate between previous studies of a probe geodesic observer and the Nariai solution. We also revisit the prescription for going from the Euclidean path integral to the state-counting partition function, finding a positive sign in the final density of states.

Comments on the de Sitter Double Cone

We study the double cone geometry proposed by Saad, Shenker, and Stanford in de Sitter space. We demonstrate that with the inclusion of static patch observers, the double cone leads to a linear ramp consistent with random matrix behavior. This ramp arises from the relative time shift between two clocks located in opposite static patches.

Fortuity in SYK Models

We study the fortuity phenomenon in supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models. For generic choices of couplings, all the BPS states in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY SYK model are fortuitous. The SYK models reveal an intimate connection between fortuity and the Schwarzian description of supersymmetric black holes, reflected in a sharp feature of $R$-charge concentration - microscopically, all the fortuitous states are concentrated in particular charge sectors. We propose that both $R$-charge concentration and the random matrix behavior near the BPS states are key properties of a generic $q$-local supercharge and formulate these as a supercharge chaos conjecture. We expect supercharge chaos to hold universally for supercharges in holographic CFTs near their fortuitous states, potentially providing a microscopic interpretation for the charge constraints of supersymmetric black holes. We also construct SYK models that contain both fortuitous states and monotonous states and contrast their properties, providing further evidence that monotonous states are less chaotic than fortuitous states.

Space-time generalization of mutual information

The mutual information characterizes correlations between spatially separated regions of a system. Yet, in experiments we often measure dynamical correlations, which involve probing operators that are also separated in time. Here, we introduce a space-time generalization of mutual information which, by construction, satisfies several natural properties of the mutual information and at the same time characterizes correlations across subsystems that are separated in time. In particular, this quantity, that we call the \emph{space-time mutual information}, bounds all dynamical correlations. We construct this quantity based on the idea of the quantum hypothesis testing. As a by-product, our definition provides a transparent interpretation in terms of an experimentally accessible setup. We draw connections with other notions in quantum information theory, such as quantum channel discrimination. Finally, we study the behavior of the space-time mutual information in several settings and contrast its long-time behavior in many-body localizing and thermalizing systems.

A convergent genus expansion for the plateau

We conjecture a formula for the spectral form factor of a double-scaled matrix integral in the limit of large time, large density of states, and fixed temperature. The formula has a genus expansion with a nonzero radius of convergence. To understand the origin of this series, we compare to the semiclassical theory of "encounters" in periodic orbits. In Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity, encounters correspond to portions of the moduli space integral that mutually cancel (in the orientable case) but individually grow at low energies. At genus one we show how the full moduli space integral resolves the low energy region and gives a finite nonzero answer.

Firewalls from wormholes

Spacetime wormholes can lead to surprises in black hole physics. We show that a very old black hole can tunnel to a white hole/firewall by emitting a large baby universe. We study the process for a perturbed thermofield double black hole in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity, using the lowest order (genus one) spacetime wormhole that corresponds to single baby-universe emission. The probability for tunneling to a white hole is proportional to $t^2 e^{-2S}$ where $t$ is the age of the black hole and $S$ is the entropy of one black hole.

The chiral SYK model

We study the generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model to a $1+1$ dimensional chiral SYK model of $N$ flavors of right-moving chiral Majorana fermions with all-to-all random 4-fermion interactions. The interactions in this model are exactly marginal, leading to an exact scaling symmetry. We show the Schwinger-Dyson equation of this model in the large $N$ limit is exactly solvable. In addition, we show this model is integrable for small $N\le6$ by bosonization. Surprisingly, the two point function in the large $N$ limit has exactly the same form as that for $N=4$, although the four point functions of the two cases are quite different. The ground state entropy in the large $N$ limit is the same as that of $N$ free chiral Majorana fermions, leading to a zero ground state entropy density. The OTOC of the model in the large $N$ limit exhibits a non-trivial spacetime structure reminscent of that found by Gu and Kitaev for generic SYK-like models. Specifically we find a Lyapunov regime inside an asymmetric butterfly cone, which are signatures of quantum chaos, and that the maximal velocity dependent Lyapunov exponent approaches the chaos bound $2π/β$ as the interaction strength approaches its physical upper bound. Finally, the model is integrable for (at least) $N\le6$ but chaotic in the large $N$ limit, leading us to conjecture that there is a transition from integrability to chaos as $N$ increases past a critical value.

Subleading Weingartens

Haar integrals over the unitary group contain subleading terms that are needed for unitarity. We study analogous effects in the time evolution operators of JT gravity and Brownian SYK. In JT gravity with bulk matter we find an explanation for the first subleading terms, and in Brownian SYK we find configurations that can explain the full series. An important role is played by slightly off-shell modes that are exponentially amplified by chaos.

Holevo Information and Ensemble Theory of Gravity

Holevo information is an upper bound for the accessible classical information of an ensemble of quantum states. In this work, we use Holevo information to investigate the ensemble theory interpretation of quantum gravity. We study the Holevo information in random tensor network states, where the random parameters are the random tensors at each vertex. Based on the results in random tensor network models, we propose a conjecture on the holographic bulk formula of the Holevo information in the gravity case. As concrete examples of holographic systems, we compute the Holevo information in the ensemble of thermal states and thermo-field double states in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. The results are consistent with our conjecture.

A violation of global symmetries from replica wormholes and the fate of black hole remnants

We show that the presence of replica wormholes in the Euclidean path integral of gravity leads to a non-perturbative violation of charge conservation for any global symmetry present in the low-energy description of quantum gravity. Explicitly, we compute the scattering probability between different charged states in several two-dimensional models of quantum gravity and find a non-vanishing answer. This suggests that the set of all charged states is typically over-complete, which has drastic consequences for the fate of black hole remnants that could carry a global symmetry charge. In the holographic context, we argue that the presence of such a symmetry in the effective description of the bulk should appear on the boundary as an emergent global symmetry after ensemble averaging.

Many-Body Chaos in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

Many-body chaos has emerged as a powerful framework for understanding thermalization in strongly interacting quantum systems. While recent analytic advances have sharpened our intuition for many-body chaos in certain large $N$ theories, it has proven challenging to develop precise numerical tools capable of exploring this phenomenon in generic Hamiltonians. To this end, we utilize massively parallel, matrix-free Krylov subspace methods to calculate dynamical correlators in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model for up to $N = 60$ Majorana fermions. We begin by showing that numerical results for two-point correlation functions agree at high temperatures with dynamical mean field solutions, while at low temperatures finite-size corrections are quantitatively reproduced by the exactly solvable dynamics of near extremal black holes. Motivated by these results, we develop a novel finite-size rescaling procedure for analyzing the growth of out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs). We verify that this procedure accurately determines the Lyapunov exponent, $λ$, across a wide range in temperatures, including in the regime where $λ$ approaches the universal bound, $λ= 2π/β$.

Classifying boundary conditions in JT gravity: from energy-branes to $α$-branes

We classify the possible boundary conditions in JT gravity and discuss their exact quantization. Each boundary condition that we study will reveal new features in JT gravity related to its matrix integral interpretation, its factorization properties and ensemble averaging interpretation, the definition of the theory at finite cutoff, its relation to the physics of near-extremal black holes and, finally, its role as a two-dimensional model of cosmology.

Effective entropy of quantum fields coupled with gravity

Entanglement entropy quantifies the amount of uncertainty of a quantum state. For quantum fields in curved space, entanglement entropy of the quantum field theory degrees of freedom is well-defined for a fixed background geometry. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the quantum field theory entanglement entropy by including dynamical gravity. The generalized quantity named effective entropy, and its Renyi entropy generalizations, are defined by analytic continuation of a gravitational path integral on replica geometry with a co-dimension-$2$ brane at the boundary of region we are studying. We discuss different approaches to define the region in a gauge invariant way, and show that the effective entropy satisfies the quantum extremal surface formula. When the quantum fields carry a significant amount of entanglement, the quantum extremal surface can have a topology transition, after which an entanglement island region appears. Our result generalizes the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formula of holographic entropy (with quantum corrections) to general geometries without asymptotic AdS boundary, and provides a more solid framework for addressing problems such as the Page curve of evaporating black holes in asymptotic flat spacetime. We apply the formula to two example systems, a closed two-dimensional universe and a four-dimensional maximally extended Schwarzchild black hole. We discuss the analog of the effective entropy in random tensor network models, which provides more concrete understanding of quantum information properties in general dynamical geometries. By introducing ancilla systems, we show how quantum information in the entanglement island can be reconstructed in a state-dependent and observer-dependent map. We study the closed universe (without spatial boundary) case and discuss how it is related to open universe.

The Quantum Gravity Dynamics of Near Extremal Black Holes

We study the quantum effects of Near-Extremal black holes near their horizons. The gravitational dynamics in such backgrounds are closely connected to a particle in $AdS_2$ with constant electric field. We use this picture to solve the theory exactly. We will give a formula to calculate all correlation functions with quantum gravity backreactions as well as the exact Wheeler-DeWitt wavefunction. Using the WdW wavefunction, we investigate the complexity growth in quantum gravity.

Finite-cutoff JT gravity and self-avoiding loops

We study quantum JT gravity at finite cutoff using a mapping to the statistical mechanics of a self-avoiding loop in hyperbolic space, with positive pressure and fixed length. The semiclassical limit (small $G_N$) corresponds to large pressure, and we solve the problem in that limit in three overlapping regimes that apply for different loop sizes. For intermediate loop sizes, a semiclassical effective description is valid, but for very large or very small loops, fluctuations dominate. For large loops, this quantum regime is controlled by the Schwarzian theory. For small loops, the effective description fails altogether, but the problem is controlled using a conjecture from the theory of self-avoiding walks.

Replica wormholes and the black hole interior

Recent work has shown how to obtain the Page curve of an evaporating black hole from holographic computations of entanglement entropy. We show how these computations can be justified using the replica trick, from geometries with a spacetime wormhole connecting the different replicas. In a simple model, we study the Page transition in detail by summing replica geometries with different topologies. We compute related quantities in less detail in more complicated models, including JT gravity coupled to conformal matter and the SYK model. Separately, we give a direct gravitational argument for entanglement wedge reconstruction using an explicit formula known as the Petz map; again, a spacetime wormhole plays an important role. We discuss an interpretation of the wormhole geometries as part of some ensemble average implicit in the gravity description.
