Gravitational Algebras with Two Areas

We study gravitational algebras on spacetimes with two extremal surfaces. In the example of a long wormhole with two asymptotic AdS boundaries and two compact extremal surfaces, we discuss the assignment of gravitational algebras to various regions bounded by the extremal surfaces and/or asymptotic boundaries. Using the split property, we construct type II algebras from the crossed product in the left exterior, right exterior, the middle ``python's lunch'' region, and their complement regions. We also study the case where only the area sum operator or area difference operator is included as part of the gravitational algebra. This can be achieved by picking the appropriate microcanonical ensemble, and these gravitational algebras can either be type II or type III depending on the region. In the case where we include only the area difference mode, the crossed product gives rise to a weight that restricts to a trace on the middle region. Differences of relative entropies with respect to this weight give differences in generalized entropies. This provides an algebraic understanding of the order parameter that controls the phase transitions between entanglement wedges. We emphasize the role of operator-valued weights used in our construction.

Approximate Quantum Error Correction at Chiral Topological Edges

Topologically ordered phases naturally realize quantum error correction through nonlocal encoding of quantum information. More recently, conformal field theories have been shown to realize approximate quantum error-correcting codes, but such constructions generally require fine tuning to criticality. Here we introduce a family of approximate quantum error-correcting codes realized by the chiral edges of two-dimensional topologically ordered phases. The proposed encoding combines the robustness of a gapped topological bulk with the flexibility of gapless edge conformal field theories. To characterize its robustness, we study coherent-information loss under local erasure. We derive an exact expression relating coherent-information loss to relative entropy, reducing the recoverability problem to universal properties of the edge theory. This leads to power-law scaling of coherent-information loss with the size of the erased region. We further show that, for geometrically local erasures near one edge, the two-dimensional chiral edge code is at least as robust as the dimensionally reduced CFT code, and is strictly more robust in several representative examples. For Abelian code subspaces, we further construct a power-law-range recovery map supported on the erased region together with a power-law-range buffer; this recovery map depends only on the code subspace, not on the unknown encoded state. We provide numerical calculations for lattice realizations of compact free boson and Ising CFT examples that support the theoretical predictions of the power-law exponents.

Wormholes as red herrings: reflection positivity and the reconstruction of unitary quantum field theories

As Coleman famously argued, the apparent breakdown of partition-function factorization in quantum gravity associated with Euclidean wormholes is a red herring, arising from a hidden average over an ensemble of theories. We present a direct analog of Coleman's argument for the apparent breakdown of Hilbert-space factorization associated with spatial wormholes, i.e., Einstein--Rosen bridges. Our main result is the following reconstruction theorem for quantum field theories: unitary QFTs are determined, up to unitary isomorphism, by their closed-manifold partition functions; every reflection-positive partition function arises from a unitary quantum field theory; and the states prepared by manifolds span the space of invariant states under the reconstructed theory's symmetry group. Interpreting the result gravitationally, we conclude that any apparent breakdown of Hilbert-space factorization is a red herring, arising from restricting to an incomplete spectrum of charged states.

Lorentzian Path Integrals and Jackiw-Teitelboim wormholes with imaginary scalars

The Lorentzian path integral was recently used to argue that standard Euclidean axion wormholes do not dominate computations of connected AdS/CFT partition functions. We now apply similar methods to study the seemingly-analogous Jackiw-Teitelboim wormholes constructed by Garcia-Garcia and Godet using Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with an imaginary-valued minimally-coupled massless scalar field. However, this time we find that these wormholes do dominate our path integral for the relevant connected partition function. This supports the suggestion by Garcia-Garcia and Godet that contributions from such wormholes parallel the physics of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model at complex couplings. The result also illustrates the sensitivity of wormhole contributions to details of the relevant physics.

Axion Wormholes and the AdS/CFT Factorization Problem

This work investigates the relevance of Euclidean and complex axion wormholes to the AdS/CFT factorization problem. We use a framework that defines bulk gravitational path integrals by integrating over a real Lorentz-signature contour and then, as needed, perhaps further analytically continuing the resulting functions of boundary conditions. For technical reasons we focus on the case of 2+1 bulk dimensions. The AdS boundary conditions (in any dimension) require us to impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the standard Euclidean axion $χ_E$. Fixing its asymptotic values on two boundary spheres to $\pm χ_{E,\infty}$, we find such wormholes to be subdominant to a UV-sensitive endpoint contribution for $χ_{E, \infty}$ near the real axis, and that (with our conventions) they become dominant only for $χ_{E, \infty}$ near the negative imgainary axis. Furthermore, such wormholes are irrelevant to our computation for ${\rm Im} χ_{E, \infty} >0$ (in the sense that the associated ascent contour fails to intersect the contour of integration). The relevance of the wormhole saddle for real positive $χ_{E, \infty}$ is in fact a matter of choice, as the saddle then lies on a Stokes' line at which the relevant intersection number changes from zero to one.

Wormholes with Ends of the World

We study classical wormhole solutions in 3D gravity with end-of-the-world (EOW) branes, conical defects, kinks, and punctures. These solutions compute statistical averages of an ensemble of boundary conformal field theories (BCFTs) related to universal asymptotics of OPE data extracted from the 2D conformal bootstrap. Conical defects connect BCFT bulk operators; branes join BCFT boundary intervals with identical boundary conditions; kinks (1D defects along branes) link BCFT boundary operators; and punctures (0D defects) are endpoints where conical defects terminate on branes. We provide evidence for a correspondence between the gravity theory and the ensemble. In particular, the agreement of the $g$-function dependence results from an underlying topological aspect of the on-shell EOW brane action, from which a BCFT analogue of the Schlenker-Witten theorem also follows.

Euclidean and complex geometries from real-time computations of gravitational Rényi entropies

Gravitational Rényi computations have traditionally been described in the language of Euclidean path integrals. In the semiclassical limit, such calculations are governed by Euclidean (or, more generally, complex) saddle-point geometries. We emphasize here that, at least in simple contexts, the Euclidean approach suggests an alternative formulation in terms of the bulk quantum wavefunction. Since this alternate formulation can be directly applied to the real-time quantum theory, it is insensitive to subtleties involved in defining the Euclidean path integral. In particular, it can be consistent with many different choices of integration contour. Despite the fact that self-adjoint operators in the associated real-time quantum theory have real eigenvalues, we note that the bulk wavefunction encodes the Euclidean (or complex) Rényi geometries that would arise in any Euclidean path integral. As a result, for any given quantum state, the appropriate real-time path integral yields both Rényi entropies and associated complex saddle-point geometries that agree with Euclidean methods. After brief explanations of these general points, we use JT gravity to illustrate the associated real-time computations in detail.

Algebras and Hilbert spaces from gravitational path integrals: Understanding Ryu-Takayanagi/HRT as entropy without AdS/CFT

Recent works by Chandrasekaran, Penington, and Witten have shown in various special contexts that the quantum-corrected Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) entropy (or its covariant Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi (HRT) generalization) can be understood as computing an entropy on an algebra of bulk observables. These arguments do not rely on the existence of a local holographic dual field theory. We show that analogous-but-stronger results hold in any UV-completion of asymptotically AdS quantum gravity with a Euclidean path integral satisfying a simple and (largely) familiar set of axioms. We consider a quantum context in which a standard Lorentz-signature classical bulk limit would have Cauchy slices with asymptotic boundaries $B_L \sqcup B_R$ where both $B_L$ and $B_R$ are compact manifolds without boundary. Our main result is that (the UV-completion of) the quantum gravity path integral defines type I von Neumann algebras ${\cal A}^{B_L}_L$, ${\cal A}^{B_R}_{R}$ of observables acting respectively at $B_L$, $B_R$ such that ${\cal A}^{B_L}_L$, ${\cal A}^{B_R}_{R}$ are commutants. The path integral also defines entropies on ${\cal A}^{B_L}_L, {\cal A}^{B_R}_R$. Positivity of the Hilbert space inner product then turns out to require the entropy of any projection operator to be quantized in the form $\ln N$ for some $N \in {\mathbb Z}^+$ (unless it is infinite). As a result, our entropies can be written in terms of standard density matrices and standard Hilbert space traces. Furthermore, in appropriate semiclassical limits our entropies are computed by the RT-formula with quantum corrections. Our work thus provides a Hilbert space interpretation of the RT entropy. Since our axioms do not severely constrain UV bulk structures, it is plausible that they hold equally well for successful formulations of string field theory, spin-foam models, or any other approach to constructing a UV-complete theory of gravity.

Null states and time evolution in a toy model of black hole dynamics

Spacetime wormholes can provide non-perturbative contributions to the gravitational path integral that make the actual number of states $e^S$ in a gravitational system much smaller than the number of states $e^{S_{\mathrm{p}}}$ predicted by perturbative semiclassical effective field theory. The effects on the physics of the system are naturally profound in contexts in which the perturbative description actively involves $N = O(e^S)$ of the possible $e^{S_{\mathrm{p}}}$ perturbative states; e.g., in late stages of black hole evaporation. Such contexts are typically associated with the existence of non-trivial quantum extremal surfaces. However, by forcing a simple topological gravity model to evolve in time, we find that such effects can also have large impact for $N\ll e^S$ (in which case no quantum extremal surfaces can arise). In particular, even for small $N$, the insertion of generic operators into the path integral can cause the non-perturbative time evolution to differ dramatically from perturbative expectations. On the other hand, this discrepancy is small for the special case where the inserted operators are non-trivial only in a subspace of dimension $D \ll e^S$. We thus study this latter case in detail. We also discuss potential implications for more realistic gravitational systems.

A trace inequality for Euclidean gravitational path integrals (and a new positive action conjecture)

The AdS/CFT correspondence states that certain conformal field theories are equivalent to string theories in a higher-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. One aspect of the correspondence is an equivalence of density matrices or, if one ignores normalizations, of positive operators. On the CFT side of the correspondence, any two positive operators $A,B$ will satisfy the trace inequality $\operatorname{Tr}(AB) \leq \operatorname{Tr}(A) \operatorname{Tr}(B)$. This relation holds on any Hilbert space ${\cal H}$ and is deeply associated with the fact that the algebra $B({\cal H})$ of bounded operators on ${\cal H}$ is a type I von Neumann factor. Holographic bulk theories must thus satisfy a corresponding condition, which we investigate below. In particular, we argue that the Euclidean gravitational path integral respects this inequality at all orders in the semi-classical expansion and with arbitrary higher-derivative corrections. The argument relies on a conjectured property of the classical gravitational action, which in particular implies a positive action conjecture for quantum gravity wavefunctions. We prove this conjecture for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and we also motivate it for more general theories.

Gravitating spinning strings in AdS$_3$

In the AdS/CFT correspondence, single trace operators of large-$N$ gauge theories at large spin $J$ can be described by classical spinning strings, giving a geometric and classical description of their spectrum at strong coupling. We observe that in AdS$_3$ these strings have significant gravitational back-reaction at sufficiently large spin, since the gravitational force does not decay at long distances. We construct solutions for folded spinning strings coupled to gravity in AdS$_3$ and compute their spectrum, corresponding to the leading Regge trajectory of Virasroro primary operators. These solutions exist only below a maximal spin $J<J_\mathrm{max}$, and as $J\to J_\mathrm{max}$ the solution approaches an extremal rotating BTZ black hole.

The Spacetime Geometry of Fixed-Area States in Gravitational Systems

The concept of fixed-area states has proven useful for recent studies of quantum gravity, especially in connection with gravitational holography. We explore the Lorentz-signature spacetime geometry intrinsic to such fixed-area states in this paper. This contrasts with previous treatments which focused instead on Euclidean-signature saddles for path integrals that prepare such states. We analyze general features of fixed-area state geometries and construct explicit examples. The spacetime metrics are real at real times and have no conical singularities. With enough symmetry the classical metrics are in fact smooth, though more generally their curvatures feature power-law divergences along null congruences launched orthogonally from the fixed-area surface. While we argue that such divergences are not problematic at the classical level, quantum fields in fixed-area states feature stronger divergences. At the quantum level we thus expect fixed-area states to be well-defined only when the fixed-area surface is appropriately smeared.

Real-time gravitational replicas: Low dimensional examples

We continue the study of real-time replica wormholes initiated in arXiv:2012.00828. Previously, we had discussed the general principles and had outlined a variational principle for obtaining stationary points of the real-time gravitational path integral. In the current work we present several explicit examples in low-dimensional gravitational theories where the dynamics is amenable to analytic computation. We demonstrate the computation of Rényi entropies in the cases of JT gravity and for holographic two-dimensional CFTs (using the dual gravitational dynamics). In particular, we explain how to obtain the large central charge result for subregions comprising of disjoint intervals directly from the real-time path integral.

Time-independence of gravitational Rényi entropies and unitarity in quantum gravity

The Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi surface $γ_{HRT}$ computing the entropy $S(D)$ of a domain of dependence $D$ on an asymptotically AdS boundary is known to be causally inaccessible from $D$. We generalize this gravitational result to higher replica numbers $n >1$ by considering the replica-invariant surfaces (aka `splitting surfaces') $\boldsymbol{\mathbfγ}$ of real-time replica-wormhole saddle-points computing Rényi entropies $S_n(D)$ and showing that there is a sense in which $D$ must again be causally inaccessible from $\boldsymbol{\mathbfγ}$ when the saddle preserves both replica and conjugation symmetry. This property turns out to imply the $S_n(D)$ to be independent of any choice of any Cauchy surface $Σ_D$ for $D$, and also that the $S_n(D)$ are independent of the choice of boundary sources within $D$. This is a key hallmark of unitary evolution in any dual field theory. Furthermore, from the bulk point of view it adds to the evidence that time evolution of asymptotic observables in quantum gravity is implemented by a unitary operator in each baby universe superselection sector. Though we focus here on pure Einstein-Hilbert gravity and its Kaluza-Klein reductions, we expect the argument to extend to any two-derivative theory who satisfies the null convergence condition. We consider both classical saddles and the effect of back-reaction from quantum corrections.

Real-time gravitational replicas: Formalism and a variational principle

This work is the first step in a two-part investigation of real-time replica wormholes. Here we study the associated real-time gravitational path integral and construct the variational principle that will define its saddle-points. We also describe the general structure of the resulting real-time replica wormhole saddles, setting the stage for construction of explicit examples. These saddles necessarily involve complex metrics, and thus are accessed by deforming the original real contour of integration. However, the construction of these saddles need not rely on analytic continuation, and our formulation can be used even in the presence of non-analytic boundary-sources. Furthermore, at least for replica- and CPT-symmetric saddles we show that the metrics may be taken to be real in regions spacelike separated from a so-called `splitting surface'. This feature is an important hallmark of unitarity in a field theory dual.

Traversability of Multi-Boundary Wormholes

We generalize the Gao-Jafferis-Wall construction of traversable two-sided wormholes to multi-boundary wormholes. In our construction, we take the background spacetime to be multi-boundary black holes in AdS$_3$. We work in the hot limit where the dual CFT state in certain regions locally resembles the thermofield double state. Furthermore, in these regions, the hot limit makes the causal shadow exponentially small. Based on these two features of the hot limit, and with the three-boundary wormhole as our main example, we show that traversability between any two asymptotic regions in a multi-boundary wormhole can be triggered using a double-trace deformation. In particular, the two boundary regions need not have the same temperature and angular momentum. We discuss the non-trivial angular dependence of traversability in our construction, as well as the effect of the causal shadow region.

Probing phase transitions of holographic entanglement entropy with fixed area states

Recent results suggest that new corrections to holographic entanglement entropy should arise near phase transitions of the associated Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) surface. We study such corrections by decomposing the bulk state into fixed-area states and conjecturing that a certain `diagonal approximation' will hold. In terms of the bulk Newton constant $G$, this yields a correction of order $O(G^{-1/2})$ near such transitions, which is in particular larger than generic corrections from the entanglement of bulk quantum fields. However, the correction becomes exponentially suppressed away from the transition. The net effect is to make the entanglement a smooth function of all parameters, turning the RT `phase transition' into a crossover already at this level of analysis. We illustrate this effect with explicit calculations (again assuming our diagonal approximation) for boundary regions given by a pair of disconnected intervals on the boundary of the AdS$_3$ vacuum and for a single interval on the boundary of the BTZ black hole. In a natural large-volume limit where our diagonal approximation clearly holds, this second example verifies that our results agree with general predictions made by Murthy and Srednicki in the context of chaotic many-body systems. As a further check on our conjectured diagonal approximation, we show that it also reproduces the $O(G^{-1/2})$ correction found Penington et al for an analogous quantum RT transition. Our explicit computations also illustrate the cutoff-dependence of fluctuations in RT-areas.

Restricted Maximin surfaces and HRT in generic black hole spacetimes

The AdS/CFT understanding of CFT entanglement is based on HRT surfaces in the dual bulk spacetime. While such surfaces need not exist in sufficiently general spacetimes, the maximin construction demonstrates that they can be found in any smooth asymptotically locally AdS spacetime without horizons or with only Kasner-like singularities. In this work, we introduce restricted maximin surfaces anchored to a particular boundary Cauchy slice $C_\partial$. We show that the result agrees with the original unrestricted maximin prescription when the restricted maximin surface lies in a smooth region of spacetime. We then use this construction to extend the existence theorem for HRT surfaces to generic charged or spinning AdS black holes whose mass-inflation singularities are not Kasner-like. We also discuss related issues in time-independent charged wormholes.
