Topological Superconductivity from Unconventional Band Degeneracy with Conventional Pairing

We present a new scheme for Majorana modes in systems with nonsymmporhic-symmetry-protected band degeneracy. We reveal that when the gapless fermionic excitations are encoded with conventional superconductivity and magnetism, which can be intrinsic or induced by proximity effect, topological superconductivity and Majorana modes can be obtained. We illustrate this outcome in a system which respects the space group P4/nmm and features a fourfold-degenerate fermionic mode at (π, π) in the Brillouin zone. We show that in the presence of conventional superconductivity, different types of topological superconductivity, i.e. first-order and second-order topological superconductivity, with coexisting fragile Wannier obstruction in the latter case, can be generated in accordance with the different types of magnetic orders; Majorana modes are shown to exist on the boundary, at the corner and in the vortices. To further demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, another example related to the space group P4/ncc based on this scheme is also provided. Our study offers insights into constructing topological superconductors based on bulk energy bands and conventional superconductivity, and helps to find new material candidates and design new platforms for realizing Majorana modes.

Nodal topological superconductivity in nodal-line semimetals

We analyze possible nodal superconducting phases that emerge from a doped nodal-line semimetal. We show that nodal-line superconducting phases are favored by interactions mediated by short-range ferromagnetic fluctuations or Hund's coupling. It is found that the leading pairing channels are momentum-independent, orbital-singlet and spin-triplet. In the pairing state, we show that the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian hosts a pair of topologically protected nodal rings on the equators of the torus Fermi surface (FS). Using a topological classification for gapless systems with inversion symmetry, we find that these nodal rings are topologically nontrivial and protected by integer-valued monopole charges $ν= \pm 2$. In the scenario of pairing driven by ferromagnetic fluctuations, we analyze the fate of superconductivity in the magnetically ordered phase. Based on Ginzburg-Landau free energy analysis, we find the energetically favored superconducting state is characterized by the coexistence of two pairing orders whose $\bf d$-vectors are perpendicular to the magnetization axis $\bf M$ with their phases unfixed. In this case, each nodal loop in the pairing state splits into two, carrying a $\pm 1$ monopole charge. For bulk-boundary correspondence, these nodal rings enclose flat-band Majorana zero modes on top and bottom surface Brillouin Zones with distinct $\mathbb{Z}$-valued topological invariants.

Nodal higher-order topological superconductivity from a $\mathcal{C}_4$-symmetric Dirac semimetal

We analyze the topological properties of the possible superconducting states emerging from a Cd$_3$As$_2$-like, $\mathcal{C}_4$-symmetric Dirac semimetal, with two four-fold degenerate Dirac points separated in the $k_z$ direction. Unlike the simplest Weyl semimetal for which all pairing orders are topologically obstructed and nodal, we show that the topological obstruction for pairing in Dirac semimetals crucially only exists for certain pairing symmetries. In particular, we focus on odd-parity $B_{1u}$ and $B_{2u}$ pairing states, both of which can be induced by Ising ferromagnetic fluctuations. The $B_{1u}$ and $B_{2u}$ pairing states inherit the topological obstruction from the normal state, which dictates that these states necessarily hosts four Bogolibov- de Gennes (BdG) Dirac point nodes protected by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ monopole charge. By a Wannier state analysis, we show that the topological obstruction in the superconducting states is of higher-order nature. As a result, in a rod geometry with gapped surfaces, arcs of higher-order Majorana zero modes exist in certain $k_z$ regions of the hinges between the BdG Dirac points. Unlike Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals, the higher-order Majorana arcs are stable against self-annihilation due to an additional $\mathbb{Z}$-valued monopole charge of the BdG Dirac points protected by $\mathcal{C}_4$ symmetry. We find that the same $\mathbb{Z}$-valued charge is also carried by $B_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ channels, where the BdG spectrum hosts bulk ``nodal cages", i.e., cages formed by nodal lines, that are stable against symmetry preserving perturbations.
