Adapting to Dynamic LEO-B5G Systems: Meta-Critic Learning Based Efficient Resource Scheduling

Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite-assisted communications have been considered as one of key elements in beyond 5G systems to provide wide coverage and cost-efficient data services. Such dynamic space-terrestrial topologies impose exponential increase in the degrees of freedom in network management. In this paper, we address two practical issues for an over-loaded LEO-terrestrial system. The first challenge is how to efficiently schedule resources to serve the massive number of connected users, such that more data and users can be delivered/served. The second challenge is how to make the algorithmic solution more resilient in adapting to dynamic wireless environments. To address them, we first propose an iterative suboptimal algorithm to provide an offline benchmark. To adapt to unforeseen variations, we propose an enhanced meta-critic learning algorithm (EMCL), where a hybrid neural network for parameterization and the Wolpertinger policy for action mapping are designed in EMCL. The results demonstrate EMCL's effectiveness and fast-response capabilities in over-loaded systems and in adapting to dynamic environments compare to previous actor-critic and meta-learning methods.

Elastic Wave Propagation and Bandgaps in Finitely Stretched Soft Lattice Material

In this study, the in-plane Bloch wave propagation and bandgaps in a finitely stretched square lattice were investigated numerically and theoretically. To be specific, the elastic band diagram was calculated for an infinite periodic structure with a cruciform hyperelastic unit cell under uniaxial or biaxial tension. In addition, an elastodynamic "tight binding" model was proposed to investigate the formation and evolution of the band structure. The elastic waves were found to propagate largely under "easy" modes in the pre-stretched soft lattice, and finite stretch tuned the symmetry of the band structure, but also "purify" the propagation modes. Moreover, the uniaxial stretch exhibits the opposite impacts on the two "easy" modes. The effect of the biaxial stretch was equated with the superposition of the uniaxial stretches in the tessellation directions. The mentioned effects on the band structure could be attributed to the competition between the effective shear moduli and lengths for different beam components. Next, the finite stretch could tune the directional bandgap of the soft lattice, and the broadest elastic wave bandgaps could be anticipated in an equi-biaxial stretch. In this study, an avenue was opened to design and implement elastic wave control devices with weight efficiency and tunability. Furthermore, the differences between the physical system and the corresponding simplified theoretical model (e.g., the theoretically predicted flat bands) did not exist in the numerical calculations.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for Multi-cell Massive MIMO: Centralized and Distributed Power Allocation Algorithms

This paper investigates the energy efficiency (EE) optimization in downlink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). In our research, the statistical channel state information (CSI) is exploited to reduce the signaling overhead. To maximize the minimum EE among the neighbouring cells, we design the transmit covariance matrices for each base station (BS). Specifically, optimization schemes for this max-min EE problem are developed, in the centralized and distributed ways, respectively. To obtain the transmit covariance matrices, we first find out the closed-form optimal transmit eigenmatrices for the BS in each cell, and convert the original transmit covariance matrices designing problem into a power allocation one. Then, to lower the computational complexity, we utilize an asymptotic approximation expression for the problem objective. Moreover, for the power allocation design, we adopt the minorization maximization method to address the non-convexity of the ergodic rate, and use Dinkelbach's transform to convert the max-min fractional problem into a series of convex optimization subproblems. To tackle the transformed subproblems, we propose a centralized iterative water-filling scheme. For reducing the backhaul burden, we further develop a distributed algorithm for the power allocation problem, which requires limited inter-cell information sharing. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated by extensive numerical results.

Elastic wave velocities in finitely pre-stretched soft fibers

Elastic wave velocity in a soft fiber that varies depending on material constitution and axial stress level is an essential measure of mechanical signals in many technical applications. In this work, based on the small-on-large theory, we establish a model of linear elastic wave propagation in a finitely pre-stretched soft fiber. The formulas of longitudinal (Primary, P-) and transverse (Secondary, S-) wave velocities are provided and validated by numerical simulations as well as by experimental data on spider silk. The influences of material constitution, compressibility, and pre-stress on the wave propagation are investigated. We found that with increasing pre-stress, the variation of P-wave velocity highly relies on the concavity of the stress-strain curve. In contrast, an increase of S-wave velocity exhibits regardless of any constitutive model. For both P- and S-waves, the variation of the velocities is more significant in a compressible fiber than that in a nearly-incompressible one. Moreover, for minuscule pre-stress, we propose a modified formula for S-wave velocity based on the Rayleigh beam theory, which reveals the competition mechanism between "string vibration" and "beam vibration." This may provide a reliable theoretical basis for precise mechanical characterization of soft fibers and open a route for lightweight, tunable wave manipulation devices.

Secrecy Limits of Energy Harvesting IoT Networks under Channel Imperfections

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has recently gathered much research interest from both academia and industry as a key enabler of energy harvesting Internet-of-things (IoT) networks. Due to a number of growing use cases of such networks, it is important to study their performance limits from the perspective of physical layer security (PLS). With this intent, this work aims to provide a novel analysis of the ergodic secrecy capacity of a SWIPT system is provided for Rician and Nakagami-m faded communication links. For a realistic evaluation of the system, the imperfections of channel estimations for different receiver designs of the SWIPT-based IoT systems have been taken into account. Subsequently, the closedform expressions of the ergodic secrecy capacities for the considered scenario are provided and, then, validated through extensive simulations. The results indicate that an error ceiling appears due to imperfect channel estimation at high values of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). More importantly, the secrecy capacity under different channel conditions stops increasing beyond a certain limit, despite an increase of the main link SNR. The in-depth analysis of secrecy-energy trade-off has also been performed and a comparison has been provided for imperfect and perfect channel estimation cases. As part of the continuous evolution of IoT networks, the results provided in this work can help in identifying the secrecy limits of IoT networks in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers.

The Lunar Lander Neutron and Dosimetry (LND) Experiment on Chang'E 4

Chang'E 4 is the first mission to the far side of the Moon and consists of a lander, a rover, and a relay spacecraft. Lander and rover were launched at 18:23 UTC on December 7, 2018 and landed in the von Kármán crater at 02:26 UTC on January 3, 2019. Here we describe the Lunar Lander Neutron \& Dosimetry experiment (LND) which is part of the Chang'E 4 Lander scientific payload. Its chief scientific goal is to obtain first active dosimetric measurements on the surface of the Moon. LND also provides observations of fast neutrons which are a result of the interaction of high-energy particle radiation with the lunar regolith and of their thermalized counterpart, thermal neutrons, which are a sensitive indicator of subsurface water content.

Shear-wave manipulation by embedded soft devices

Hyperelastic transformation theory has proven shear-wave manipulation devices with various functions can be designed by utilizing neo-Hookean material with appropriate pre-deformation. However, it is still elusive that how can such devices match with the background medium in which they embedded. In this work, we present a systematic formulation of the transmission and reflection of elastic waves at the interface between un-deformed and pre-deformed hyperelastic materials. With the combination of theoretical analyses and numerical simulations, we specifically investigate the shear-wave propagation from an un-deformed neo-Hookean material to the one subject to different homogeneous deformations. Among three typical deformation modes, we found "constrained" uniaxial tension and simple shear guarantee total transmission, whereas "ordinary" uniaxial tension and hydrostatic compression cause wave reflection. On this basis, three embedded shear-wave manipulation devices, including a unidirectional cloak, a splicable beam bend, and a concave lens, are proposed and verified through numerical simulations. This work may pave the way for the design and realization of soft-matter-based wave control devices. Potential applications can be anticipated in nondestructive testing, structure impact protection, biomedical imaging, and soft robotics.

Secrecy Analysis and Learning-based Optimization of Cooperative NOMA SWIPT Systems

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered to be one of the best candidates for future networks due to its ability to serve multiple users using the same resource block. Although early studies have focused on transmission reliability and energy efficiency, recent works are considering cooperation among the nodes. The cooperative NOMA techniques allow the user with a better channel (near user) to act as a relay between the source and the user experiencing poor channel (far user). This paper considers the link security aspect of energy harvesting cooperative NOMA users. In particular, the near user applies the decode-and-forward (DF) protocol for relaying the message of the source node to the far user in the presence of an eavesdropper. Moreover, we consider that all the devices use power-splitting architecture for energy harvesting and information decoding. We derive the analytical expression of intercept probability. Next, we employ deep learning based optimization to find the optimal power allocation factor. The results show the robustness and superiority of deep learning optimization over conventional iterative search algorithm.

Mobility is the backbone of urban life and a vital economic factor in the development of the world. Rapid urbanization and the growth of mega-cities is bringing dramatic changes in the capabilities of vehicles. Innovative solutions like autonomy, electrification, and connectivity are on the horizon. How, then, we can provide ubiquitous connectivity to the legacy and autonomous vehicles? This paper seeks to answer this question by combining recent leaps of innovation in network virtualization with remarkable feats of wireless communications. To do so, this paper proposes a novel paradigm called the Internet of autonomous vehicles (IoAV). We begin painting the picture of IoAV by discussing the salient features, and applications of IoAV which is followed by a detailed discussion on the key enabling technologies. Next, we describe the proposed layered architecture of IoAV and uncover some critical functions of each layer. This is followed by the performance evaluation of IoAV which shows the significant advantage of the proposed architecture in terms of transmission time and energy consumption. Finally, to best capture the benefits of IoAV, we enumerate some social and technological challenges and explain how some unresolved issues can disrupt the widespread use of autonomous vehicles in the future.

Applications of Backscatter Communications for Healthcare Networks

Backscatter communication is expected to help in revitalizing the domain of healthcare through its myriad applications. From on-body sensors to in-body implants and miniature embeddable devices, there are many potential use cases that can leverage the miniature and low-powered nature of backscatter devices. However, the existing literature lacks a comprehensive study that provides a distilled review of the latest studies on backscatter communications from the healthcare perspective. Thus, with the objective to promote the utility of backscatter communication in healthcare, this paper aims to identify specific applications of backscatter systems. A detailed taxonomy of recent studies and gap analysis for future research directions are provided in this work. Finally, we conduct measurements at 590 MHz in different propagation environments with the in-house designed backscatter device. The link budget results show the promise of backscatter devices to communicate over large distances for indoor environments which demonstrates its potential in the healthcare system.

Propagation Channels for mmWave Vehicular Communications: State-of-the-art and Future Research Directions

Vehicular communications essentially support automotive applications for safety and infotainment. For this reason, industry leaders envision an enhanced role of vehicular communications in the fifth generation of mobile communications technology. Over the years, the number of vehicle-mounted sensors has increased steadily, which potentially leads to more volume of critical data communications in a short time. Also, emerging applications such as remote/autonomous driving and infotainment such as high-definition movie streaming require data-rates on the order of multiple Gbit/s. Such high data-rates require a large system bandwidth, but very limited bandwidth is available in the sub-6 GHz cellular bands. This has sparked research interest in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band (10 GHz-300 GHz), where a large bandwidth is available to support the high data-rate and low-latency communications envisioned for emerging vehicular applications. However, leveraging mmWave communications requires a thorough understanding of the relevant vehicular propagation channels, which are significantly different from those investigated below 6 GHz. Despite their significance, very few investigations of mmWave vehicular channels are reported in the literature. This work highlights the key attributes of mmWave vehicular communication channels and surveys the recent literature on channel characterization efforts in order to provide a gap analysis and propose possible directions for future research.

A Linear Strain Energy Function for Hyperelastic Transformation Method

Hyperelastic transformation method provides a promising approach to manipulate elastic waves by utilizing soft materials. However, no existing constitutive model can rigorously achieve the requirement of such method. In this Letter, a linear strain energy function (SEF) which is valid for small deformation is proposed, which can be implemented to control the longitudinal and shear elastic waves simultaneously. In comparison with the neo-Hookean and the semi-linear SEFs, the wave propagation and the impedance of pre-deformed linear hyperelastic material are exploited. Numerical simulations are performed to validate the theoretical results. The investigation may pave the ways for the design and realization of soft transformation devices.

Longitudinal elastic wave control by pre-deforming semi-linear materials

An incremental wave superimposed on a pre-deformed hyper-elastic material perceives an elastic media with the instantaneous modulus of the current material. This offers a new route with a broadband feature to control elastic waves by purposely creating finite deformation field. This study proves that the governing equation of a semi-linear material under a symmetric pre-deformation condition maintains the form invariance for longitudinal wave, so the longitudinal wave control can be made by transformation method without the constraint condition on principle stretches, but this is not the case for shear waves. Therefore pre-deforming a semi-linear material provides a potential method for treating longitudinal and shear waves differently. Examples with elastic wave control and band structure shift through pre-deforming a semi-linear material are provided to illustrate this finding. Finally, a one-dimensional spring lattice is proposed to mimic a semi-linear material, and the dispersion relation for longitudinal waves in a sandwich structure with such spring lattice is shown to be invariant during elongation, confirming the result found based on a homogeneous semi-linear material. These results may stimulate researches on designing new hyper-elastic microstructures as well as designing new devices based on pre-deformed hyper-elastic materials.

Elastic wave propagation in simple-sheared hyperelastic materials with different constitutive models

We investigate the elastic wave propagation in various hyperelastic materials which subjected to simple-shear deformation. Two compressible types of three conventional hyperelastic models are considered. We found pure elastic wave modes can be obtained in compressible neo-Hookean materials constructed by adding a bulk strain energy term to the incompressible strain energy function. Whereas for the compressible hyperelastic models which are reformulate into deviatoric and hydrostatic parts, only quasi modes can propagate, with abnormal ray directions can be observed for longitudinal waves. Moreover, the influences of material constants, material compressibility and external deformations on the propagation and refraction for elastic waves in these hyperelastic models are systematically studied. Numerical simulations are carried out to validate the theoretical results. This investigation may open a promising route for the realization of next generation metamaterials and novel wave manipulation devices.

Stable Band-Gaps in Phononic Crystals by Harnessing Hyperelastic Transformation Media

The band structure in phononic crystals (PCs) is usually affected by the deformations of their soft components. In this work, hyperelastic transformation media is proposed to be integrated in the PCs'design, to achieve stable elastic band-gaps which is independent with finite mechanical deformations. For a one-dimensional (1D) PC, we demonstrate the semi-linear soft component can keep all elastic wave bands unchanged with the external deformation field. While for neo-Hookean soft component, only S-wave bands can be precisely retained. The change of the P-wave bands can be predicted by using a lumped mass method. Numerical simulations are performed to validate our theory predictions and the robustness of the proposed PCs.

Queueing Game For Spectrum Access in Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, we investigate the problem of spectrum access decision-making for the Secondary Users (SUs) in the cognitive radio networks. When the Primary Users (PUs) are absent on certain frequency bandwidth, SUs can formulate a queue and wait for the Base Station (BS) to serve. The queue of the SUs will be dismissed if the PU is emerging in the system. Leveraging the queueing game approaches, the decision-making process of the SUs that whether to queue or not is studied. Both individual equilibrium and social optimization strategies are derived analytically. Moreover, the optimal pricing strategy of the service provider is investigated as well. Our proposed algorithms and corresponding analysis are validated through simulation studies.

Energy Efficient Resource Allocation and User Scheduling for Collaborative Mobile Clouds with Hybrid Receivers

In this paper, we study the resource allocation and user scheduling algorithm for minimizing the energy cost of data transmission in the context of OFDMA collaborative mobile cloud (CMC) with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) receivers. The CMC, which consists of several collaborating MTs offers one potential solution for downlink content distribution and for the energy consumption reduction at the terminal side. Meanwhile, as RF signal can carry both information and energy simultaneously, the induced SWIPT has gained much attention for energy efficiency design of mobile nodes. Previous work on the design of CMC system mainly focused on the cloud formulation or energy efficiency investigation, while how to allocate the radio resource and schedule user transmission lacks attention. With the objective to minimize the system energy consumption, an optimization problem which jointly considers subchannel assignment, power allocation and user scheduling for a group of SWIPT receivers has been presented. The formulated problem is addressed through the convex optimization technique. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed user scheduling and resource allocation algorithms can achieve significant energy saving performance.
