StoxLSTM: A Stochastic Extended Long Short-Term Memory Network for Time Series Forecasting

The Extended Long Short-Term Memory (xLSTM) network has demonstrated strong capability in modeling complex long-term dependencies in time series data. Despite its success, the deterministic architecture of xLSTM limits its representational capacity and forecasting performance, especially on challenging real-world time series datasets characterized by inherent uncertainty, stochasticity, and complex hierarchical latent dynamics. In this work, we propose StoxLSTM, a stochastic xLSTM within a designed state space modeling framework, which integrates latent stochastic variables directly into the recurrent units to effectively model deep latent temporal dynamics and uncertainty. The designed state space model follows an efficient non-autoregressive generative approach, achieving strong predictive performance without complex modifications to the original xLSTM architecture. Extensive experiments on publicly available benchmark datasets demonstrate that StoxLSTM consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baselines, achieving superior performance and generalization.

Step-DeepResearch Technical Report

As LLMs shift toward autonomous agents, Deep Research has emerged as a pivotal metric. However, existing academic benchmarks like BrowseComp often fail to meet real-world demands for open-ended research, which requires robust skills in intent recognition, long-horizon decision-making, and cross-source verification. To address this, we introduce Step-DeepResearch, a cost-effective, end-to-end agent. We propose a Data Synthesis Strategy Based on Atomic Capabilities to reinforce planning and report writing, combined with a progressive training path from agentic mid-training to SFT and RL. Enhanced by a Checklist-style Judger, this approach significantly improves robustness. Furthermore, to bridge the evaluation gap in the Chinese domain, we establish ADR-Bench for realistic deep research scenarios. Experimental results show that Step-DeepResearch (32B) scores 61.4% on Scale AI Research Rubrics. On ADR-Bench, it significantly outperforms comparable models and rivals SOTA closed-source models like OpenAI and Gemini DeepResearch. These findings prove that refined training enables medium-sized models to achieve expert-level capabilities at industry-leading cost-efficiency.

Plasma acceleration of polarized particle beams

Spin-polarized particle beams are of interest for applications like deep-inelastic scattering, e.g. to gain further understanding of the proton's nuclear structure. With the advent of high-intensity laser facilities, laser-plasma-based accelerators offer a promising alternative to standard radiofrequency-based accelerators, as they can shorten the required acceleration length significantly. However, in the scope of spin-polarized particles, they bring unique challenges. This paper reviews the developments in the field of spin-polarized particles, focusing on the interaction of laser pulses and high-energy particle beams with plasma. The relevant scaling laws for spin-dependent effects in laser-plasma interaction, as well as acceleration schemes for polarized leptons, ions, and gamma quanta, are discussed.

Step-Audio-AQAA: a Fully End-to-End Expressive Large Audio Language Model

Large Audio-Language Models (LALMs) have significantly advanced intelligent human-computer interaction, yet their reliance on text-based outputs limits their ability to generate natural speech responses directly, hindering seamless audio interactions. To address this, we introduce Step-Audio-AQAA, a fully end-to-end LALM designed for Audio Query-Audio Answer (AQAA) tasks. The model integrates a dual-codebook audio tokenizer for linguistic and semantic feature extraction, a 130-billion-parameter backbone LLM and a neural vocoder for high-fidelity speech synthesis. Our post-training approach employs interleaved token-output of text and audio to enhance semantic coherence and combines Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) with model merge to improve performance. Evaluations on the StepEval-Audio-360 benchmark demonstrate that Step-Audio-AQAA excels especially in speech control, outperforming the state-of-art LALMs in key areas. This work contributes a promising solution for end-to-end LALMs and highlights the critical role of token-based vocoder in enhancing overall performance for AQAA tasks.

Reach-Avoid-Stabilize Using Admissible Control Sets

Hamilton-Jacobi Reachability (HJR) analysis has been successfully used in many robotics and control tasks, and is especially effective in computing reach-avoid sets and control laws that enable an agent to reach a goal while satisfying state constraints. However, the original HJR formulation provides no guarantees of safety after a) the prescribed time horizon, or b) goal satisfaction. The reach-avoid-stabilize (RAS) problem has therefore gained a lot of focus: find the set of initial states (the RAS set), such that the trajectory can reach the target, and stabilize to some point of interest (POI) while avoiding obstacles. Solving RAS problems using HJR usually requires defining a new value function, whose zero sub-level set is the RAS set. The existing methods do not consider the problem when there are a series of targets to reach and/or obstacles to avoid. We propose a method that uses the idea of admissible control sets; we guarantee that the system will reach each target while avoiding obstacles as prescribed by the given time series. Moreover, we guarantee that the trajectory ultimately stabilizes to the POI. The proposed method provides an under-approximation of the RAS set, guaranteeing safety. Numerical examples are provided to validate the theory.

Anomalous Maxwell-Garnett theory for photonic time crystals

Maxwell-Garnett theory, dating back to James Clerk Maxwell-Garnett's foundational work in 1904, provides a simple yet powerful framework to describe the inhomogeneous structure as an effective homogeneous medium, which significantly reduces the overall complexity of analysis, calculation, and design. As such, the Maxwell-Garnett theory enables many practical applications in diverse realms, ranging from photonics, acoustics, mechanics, thermodynamics, to material science. It has long been thought that the Maxwell-Garnett theory of light in impedance-mismatched periodic structures is valid only within the long-wavelength limit, necessitating either the temporal or spatial period of light to be much larger than that of structures. Here, we break this long-held belief by revealing an anomalous Maxwell-Garnett theory for impedance-mismatched photonic time crystals beyond this long-wavelength limit. The key to this anomaly lies in the Fabry-Perot resonance. We discover that under the Fabry-Pérot resonance, the impedance-mismatched photonic time crystal could be essentially equivalent to a homogeneous temporal slab simultaneously at specific discrete wavelengths, despite the temporal period of these light being comparable to or even much smaller than that of photonic time crystals.

A Comprehensive Survey on Self-Interpretable Neural Networks

Neural networks have achieved remarkable success across various fields. However, the lack of interpretability limits their practical use, particularly in critical decision-making scenarios. Post-hoc interpretability, which provides explanations for pre-trained models, is often at risk of robustness and fidelity. This has inspired a rising interest in self-interpretable neural networks, which inherently reveal the prediction rationale through the model structures. Although there exist surveys on post-hoc interpretability, a comprehensive and systematic survey of self-interpretable neural networks is still missing. To address this gap, we first collect and review existing works on self-interpretable neural networks and provide a structured summary of their methodologies from five key perspectives: attribution-based, function-based, concept-based, prototype-based, and rule-based self-interpretation. We also present concrete, visualized examples of model explanations and discuss their applicability across diverse scenarios, including image, text, graph data, and deep reinforcement learning. Additionally, we summarize existing evaluation metrics for self-interpretability and identify open challenges in this field, offering insights for future research. To support ongoing developments, we present a publicly accessible resource to track advancements in this domain: https://github.com/yangji721/Awesome-Self-Interpretable-Neural-Network.

AI-driven Prediction of Insulin Resistance in Normal Populations: Comparing Models and Criteria

Insulin resistance (IR) is a key precursor to diabetes and a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Traditional IR assessment methods require multiple blood tests. We developed a simple AI model using only fasting blood glucose to predict IR in non-diabetic populations. Data from the NHANES (1999-2020) and CHARLS (2015) studies were used for model training and validation. Input features included age, gender, height, weight, blood pressure, waist circumference, and fasting blood glucose. The CatBoost algorithm achieved AUC values of 0.8596 (HOMA-IR) and 0.7777 (TyG index) in NHANES, with an external AUC of 0.7442 for TyG. For METS-IR prediction, the model achieved AUC values of 0.9731 (internal) and 0.9591 (external), with RMSE values of 3.2643 (internal) and 3.057 (external). SHAP analysis highlighted waist circumference as a key predictor of IR. This AI model offers a minimally invasive and effective tool for IR prediction, supporting early diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention.

Laser wakefield acceleration of ions with a transverse flying focus

The extreme electric fields created in high-intensity laser-plasma interactions could generate energetic ions far more compactly than traditional accelerators. Despite this promise, laser-plasma accelerators have remained stagnant at maximum ion energies of 100 MeV/nucleon for the last twenty years. The central challenge is the low charge-to-mass ratio of ions, which has precluded one of the most successful approaches used for electrons: laser wakefield acceleration. Here we show that a laser pulse with a focal spot that moves transverse to the laser propagation direction enables wakefield acceleration of ions to GeV energies in underdense plasma. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate that this relativistic-intensity "transverse flying focus" can trap ions in a comoving electrostatic pocket, producing a monoenergetic collimated ion beam. With a peak intensity of $10^{20}\,$W/cm$^2$ and an acceleration distance of $0.44\,$cm, we observe a proton beam with $23.1\,$pC charge, $1.6\,$GeV peak energy, and $3.7\,$% relative energy spread. This approach allows for compact high-repetition-rate production of high-energy ions, highlighting the capability of more generalized spatio-temporal pulse shaping to address open problems in plasma physics.

Acquire Precise and Comparable Fundus Image Quality Score: FTHNet and FQS Dataset

The retinal fundus images are utilized extensively in the diagnosis, and their quality can directly affect the diagnosis results. However, due to the insufficient dataset and algorithm application, current fundus image quality assessment (FIQA) methods are not powerful enough to meet ophthalmologists` demands. In this paper, we address the limitations of datasets and algorithms in FIQA. First, we establish a new FIQA dataset, Fundus Quality Score(FQS), which includes 2246 fundus images with two labels: a continuous Mean Opinion Score varying from 0 to 100 and a three-level quality label. Then, we propose a FIQA Transformer-based Hypernetwork (FTHNet) to solve these tasks with regression results rather than classification results in conventional FIQA works. The FTHNet is optimized for the FIQA tasks with extensive experiments. Results on our FQS dataset show that the FTHNet can give quality scores for fundus images with PLCC of 0.9423 and SRCC of 0.9488, significantly outperforming other methods with fewer parameters and less computation complexity. We successfully build a dataset and model addressing the problems of current FIQA methods. Furthermore, the model deployment experiments demonstrate its potential in automatic medical image quality control. All experiments are carried out with 10-fold cross-validation to ensure the significance of the results.

Versatile Cataract Fundus Image Restoration Model Utilizing Unpaired Cataract and High-quality Images

Cataract is one of the most common blinding eye diseases and can be treated by surgery. However, because cataract patients may also suffer from other blinding eye diseases, ophthalmologists must diagnose them before surgery. The cloudy lens of cataract patients forms a hazy degeneration in the fundus images, making it challenging to observe the patient's fundus vessels, which brings difficulties to the diagnosis process. To address this issue, this paper establishes a new cataract image restoration method named Catintell. It contains a cataract image synthesizing model, Catintell-Syn, and a restoration model, Catintell-Res. Catintell-Syn uses GAN architecture with fully unsupervised data to generate paired cataract-like images with realistic style and texture rather than the conventional Gaussian degradation algorithm. Meanwhile, Catintell-Res is an image restoration network that can improve the quality of real cataract fundus images using the knowledge learned from synthetic cataract images. Extensive experiments show that Catintell-Res outperforms other cataract image restoration methods in PSNR with 39.03 and SSIM with 0.9476. Furthermore, the universal restoration ability that Catintell-Res gained from unpaired cataract images can process cataract images from various datasets. We hope the models can help ophthalmologists identify other blinding eye diseases of cataract patients and inspire more medical image restoration methods in the future.

TabKANet: Tabular Data Modeling with Kolmogorov-Arnold Network and Transformer

Tabular data is the most common type of data in real-life scenarios. In this study, we propose the TabKANet model for tabular data modeling, which targets the bottlenecks in learning from numerical content. We constructed a Kolmogorov-Arnold Network (KAN) based Numerical Embedding Module and unified numerical and categorical features encoding within a Transformer architecture. TabKANet has demonstrated stable and significantly superior performance compared to Neural Networks (NNs) across multiple public datasets in binary classification, multi-class classification, and regression tasks. Its performance is comparable to or surpasses that of Gradient Boosted Decision Tree models (GBDTs). Our code is publicly available on GitHub: https://github.com/AI-thpremed/TabKANet.

Learning-based Traversability Costmap for Autonomous Off-road Navigation

Traversability estimation in off-road terrains is an essential procedure for autonomous navigation. However, creating reliable labels for complex interactions between the robot and the surface is still a challenging problem in learning-based costmap generation. To address this, we propose a method that predicts traversability costmaps by leveraging both visual and geometric information of the environment. To quantify the surface properties like roughness and bumpiness, we introduce a novel way of risk-aware labelling with proprioceptive information for network training. We validate our method in costmap prediction and navigation tasks for complex off-road scenarios. Our results demonstrate that our costmap prediction method excels in terms of average accuracy and MSE. The navigation results indicate that using our learned costmaps leads to safer and smoother driving, outperforming previous methods in terms of the highest success rate, lowest normalized trajectory length, lowest time cost, and highest mean stability across two scenarios.

Highly Polarized Energetic Electrons via Intense Laser-Irradiated Tailored Targets

A method for the generation of ultrarelativistic electron beams with high spin polarization is put forward, where a tightly-focused linearly-polarized ultraintense laser pulse interacts with a nonprepolarized transverse-size-tailored solid target. The radiative spin polarization and angular separation is facilitated by the standing wave formed via the incident and reflected laser pulses at the overdense plasma surface. Strong electron heating caused by transverse instability enhances photon emission in the density spikes injected into the standing wave near the surface. Two groups of electrons with opposite transverse polarization emerge, anti-aligned to the magnetic field, which are angularly separated in the standing wave due to the phase-matched oscillation of the magnetic field and the vector potential. The polarized electrons propelled into the plasma slab, are focused at the exit by the self-generated quasistatic fields. Our particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate the feasibility of highly polarized electrons with a single 10 PW laser beam, e.g. with polarization of 60% and charge of 8 pC selected at energy of 200 MeV within 15 mrad angle and 10% energy spread.

Parameterized Fast and Safe Tracking (FaSTrack) using Deepreach

Fast and Safe Tracking (FaSTrack) is a modular framework that provides safety guarantees while planning and executing trajectories in real time via value functions of Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) reachability. These value functions are computed through dynamic programming, which is notorious for being computationally inefficient. Moreover, the resulting trajectory does not adapt online to the environment, such as sudden disturbances or obstacles. DeepReach is a scalable deep learning method to HJ reachability that allows parameterization of states, which opens up possibilities for online adaptation to various controls and disturbances. In this paper, we propose Parametric FaSTrack, which uses DeepReach to approximate a value function that parameterizes the control bounds of the planning model. The new framework can smoothly trade off between the navigation speed and the tracking error (therefore maneuverability) while guaranteeing obstacle avoidance in a priori unknown environments. We demonstrate our method through two examples and a benchmark comparison with existing methods, showing the safety, efficiency, and faster solution times of the framework.

Safe Returning FaSTrack with Robust Control Lyapunov-Value Functions

Real-time navigation in a priori unknown environment remains a challenging task, especially when an unexpected (unmodeled) disturbance occurs. In this paper, we propose the framework Safe Returning Fast and Safe Tracking (SR-F) that merges concepts from 1) Robust Control Lyapunov-Value Functions (R-CLVF), and 2) the Fast and Safe Tracking (FaSTrack) framework. The SR-F computes an R-CLVF offline between a model of the true system and a simplified planning model. Online, a planning algorithm is used to generate a trajectory in the simplified planning space, and the R-CLVF is used to provide a tracking controller that exponentially stabilizes to the planning model. When an unexpected disturbance occurs, the proposed SR-F algorithm provides a means for the true system to recover to the planning model. We take advantage of this mechanism to induce an artificial disturbance by ``jumping'' the planning model in open environments, forcing faster navigation. Therefore, this algorithm can both reject unexpected true disturbances and accelerate navigation speed. We validate our framework using a 10D quadrotor system and show that SR-F is empirically 20\% faster than the original FaSTrack while maintaining safety.

Synthesizing Control Lyapunov-Value Functions for High-Dimensional Systems Using System Decomposition and Admissible Control Sets

Control Lyapunov functions (CLFs) play a vital role in modern control applications, but finding them remains a problem. Recently, the control Lyapunov-value function (CLVF) and robust CLVF have been proposed as solutions for nonlinear time-invariant systems with bounded control and disturbance. However, the CLVF suffers from the ''curse of dimensionality,'' which hinders its application to practical high-dimensional systems. In this paper, we propose a method to decompose systems of a particular coupled nonlinear structure, in order to solve for the CLVF in each low-dimensional subsystem. We then reconstruct the full-dimensional CLVF and provide sufficient conditions for when this reconstruction is exact. Moreover, a point-wise optimal controller can be obtained using a quadratic program. We also show that when the exact reconstruction is impossible, the subsystems' CLVFs and their ``admissible control sets'' can be used to generate a Lipschitz continuous CLF. We provide several numerical examples to validate the theory and show computational efficiency.
