Nanodiamond-Enabled Torsion Microscopy Uncovers Multidimensional Cell-Matrix Mechanical Interactions

Traditional cellular force-sensing techniques, such as traction force microscopy (TFM), are predominantly limited to measuring linear tractions, overlooking and technically unable to capture the nanoscale torsional forces that are critical in cell-matrix interactions. Here, we introduce a nanodiamond-enabled torsion microscopy (DTM) that integrates nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers as orientation markers with micropillar arrays to decouple and quantify nanoscale rotational and translational motions induced by cells. This approach achieves high precision (~1.47 degree rotational accuracy and ~3.13*10-15 Nm torque sensitivity), enabling reconstruction of cellular torsional force fields and twisting energy distributions previously underestimated. Our findings reveal the widespread presence of torsional forces in cell-matrix interactions, introducing "cellular mechanical modes" where different adhesion patterns dictate the balance between traction- and torque- mediated mechanical energy transferred to the substrate. Notably, in immune cells like macrophages that generally exert low linear tractions, torque overwhelmingly dominates traction, highlighting a unique mechanical output for specific cellular functions. By uncovering these differential modes, DTM provides a versatile tool to advance biomechanical investigations, with potential applications in disease diagnostics and therapeutics.

Observation of Intrinsic and LED Light-Enhanced Memristor Performance in In-Plane Ferroelectric NbOI2

Two-dimensional (2D) layered ferroelectrics, as an emerging area of research, have attracted extensive attention, while memristors based on new 2D ferroelectric materials have yet to be fully explored, thereby limiting their applications in modern nanoelectronics. In this work, we report the observation of intrinsic memristive behavior in a newly discovered 2D in-plane ferroelectric material, NbOI2, and the giant enhancement of the memristive performance using LED visible light. The results show that NbOI2 exhibits intrinsically strong memristive response with a current on/off ratio of up to 10^4 and stable switching cycles, which is independent of back-gate voltage. Under LED visible light illumination, the current on/off ratio in NbOI2 is over one order of magnitude higher than that without light, meanwhile, the coercive field is significantly reduced to less than 1.22 kVcm-1, much lower than other 2D ferroelectric material-based memristors. Interestingly, both the intrinsic and the light-enhanced resistive switching phenomena only occur along the in-plane b-axis direction, indicating that the memristive behavior in NbOI2 is driven by electric field-induced and optical field-enhanced ferroelectric polarization switching mechanisms, as evidenced by a combined orientation-dependent electrical/optoelectrical measurement and sweep cycle-induced structural evolution analysis. Our study not only provides a materials strategy based on new 2D ferroelectrics for designing memristor applications, but also offers a simple optical method to enhance its performance, paving the path for its implementation in novel nanoelectronics and optoelectronics.

A diamond heater-thermometer microsensor for measuring localized thermal conductivity: a case study in gelatin hydrogel

Understanding the microscopic thermal effects of the hydrogel is important for its application in diverse fields, including thermal-related studies in tissue engineering and thermal management for flexible electronic devices. In recent decades, localized thermal properties, such as thermal conductivity, have often been overlooked due to technical limitations. To tackle this, we propose a new hybrid diamond microsensor that is capable of simultaneous temperature control and readout in a decoupled manner. Specifically, the sensor consists of a silicon pillar (heater) at about 10 microns in length, topped by a micron-sized diamond particle that contains silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers (thermometer) with 1.29 K*Hz^(-1/2) temperature measurement sensitivity. Combining this innovative, scalable sensor with a newly established simulation model that can transform heating-laser-induced temperature change into thermal conductivity, we introduced an all-optical decoupled method with about 0.05 W/(m* K) precision, which can reduce laser crosstalk. For the first time, we track the thermal conductivity change of hydrogels during the gelation process and demonstrate the existence of variation. We introduce a rapid, undisturbed technique for measuring microscale thermal conductivity, potentially serving as a valuable tool for cellular thermometry and highlight the idea that decoupling can reduce crosstalk from different lasers, which is helpful for quantum sensing.

Space-confined solid-phase growth of two-domain 1T'-ReSe2 for tunable optoelectronics

Two-dimensional layered ReX2 (X = Se, S) has attracted researcher's great interest due to its unusual in-plane anisotropic optical and electrical properties and great potential in polarization-sensitive optoelectronic devices, while the clean, energy-saving, and ecological synthesis of highly-crystalline ReSe2 with controlled domains remains challenging yet promising. Here, we develop a novel space-confined solid-phase approach for the growth of high-quality two-domain 1T'-ReSe2 with tunable optoelectronic properties by using pure Re powder film as Re precursor. The results show that ReSe2 can be grown at a temperature as low as 550 oC in a small-tube-assisted space-confined reactor, with its size and shape well-tailored via temperature control. A solid-phase two-domain ReSe2 growth mechanism is proposed, as evidenced by combining in-situ optical monitoring, ex-situ electron microscope and elemental mapping, and polarized optical imaging. Moreover, we have fabricated two-domain ReSe2 transistors, which exhibit switchable transport behavior between n-type and ambipolar character via grain boundary orientation control. This modulation phenomenon is attributed to the different doping levels between the grain boundary and the single domain. Furthermore, the as-fabricated two-domain ReSe2 photodetectors exhibit a highly gate-tunable current on-off ratio (with a maximum value of ~8.2x10^3), a polarization-sensitive photo-response, and a high-speed response time (~300 us), exceeding most of the previously reported ReX2 photodetectors. Our work thus provides a new, low-consumption, energy-saving growth strategy toward high-quality, domain-controlled ReX2 for highly tunable and high-performance optoelectronics.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Health Awareness Events by Google Search Frequency

Over two hundreds health awareness events take place in the United States in order to raise attention and educate the public about diseases. It would be informative and instructive for the organization to know the impact of these events, although such information could be difficult to measure. Here 46 events are selected and their data from 2004 to 2017 are downloaded from Google Trend(GT). We investigate whether the events effectively attract the public attention by increasing the search frequencies of certain keywords which we call queries. Three statistical methods including Transfer Function Noise modeling, Wilcoxon Rank Sum test, and Binomial inference are conducted on 46 GT data sets. Our study show that 10 health awareness events are effective with evidence of a significant increase in search frequencies in the event months, and 28 events are ineffective, with the rest being classified as unclear.

The Mean Value Theorem and Basic Properties of the Obstacle Problem for Divergence Form Elliptic Operators

In 1963, Littman, Stampacchia, and Weinberger proved a mean value theorem for elliptic operators in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients. In the Fermi lectures in 1998, Caffarelli stated a much simpler mean value theorem for the same situation, but did not include the details of the proof. We show all of the nontrivial details needed to prove the formula stated by Caffarelli, and in the course of showing these details we establish some of the basic facts about the obstacle problem for general elliptic divergence form operators, in particular, we show a basic quadratic nondegeneracy property.

Reifenberg Flatness of Free Boundaries in Obstacle Problems with VMO Ingredients

We study the obstacle problem with an elliptic operator in divergence form. We develop all of the basic theory of existence, uniqueness, optimal regularity, and nondegeneracy of the solutions. These results, in turn, allow us to begin the study of the regularity of the free boundary in the case where the coefficients are in VMO.
