What is the Brightest Source for Dilepton Emissions at RHIC?

We calculate the dilepton emissions as the decay product of the charm and bottom quarks produced in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energy. We take into account the next-to-leading-order radiative corrections in perturbative QCD to the heavy quark production from both an initial hard parton-parton scattering and an ideal quark-gluon plasma. We find that the thermal charm decay dominates the dilepton production in the low dilepton mass region ($<2$ GeV), while the heavy quark production from the initial scattering takes over the intermediate and high mass regions ($> 2$ GeV). Our result also indicates the importance of the bottom quark in the high mass region ($>4 $ GeV ) due to its large mass and cascade decay. If the initial scattering produced charm suffers a significant energy loss due to the secondary interaction, the bottom decay constitutes the major background for the thermal dileptons.

Jet Quenching in the Opposite Direction of a Tagged Photon in High-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions

We point out that events associated with large $E_T$ direct photons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can be used to study jet energy loss in dense matter. In such events, the $p_T$ spectrum of charged hadrons from jet fragmentation in the opposite direction of the tagged photon is estimated to be well above the background which can be reliably subtracted at moderately large $p_T$. We demonstrate that comparison between the extracted fragmentation function in $AA$ and $pp$ collisions can be used to determine the jet energy loss and the interaction mean-free-path in the dense matter produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Dilepton and Photon Productions from a Coherent Pion Oscillation

Since the electromagnetic current for a pion system coincides with the third component of the isovector current, the isospin angular oscillation of a coherent field can be a significant source for the electromagnetic emissions. We study the characteristic dilepton and photon emissions from the classical pion field oscillation in the QCD vacuum. The general analytical solution obtained in the nonlinear sigma model is used to calculate the electromagnetic current density, which exhibits a light-front singularity and decreases rapidly as inverse square of the proper time due to a longitudinal expansion. The momentum and invariant mass spectra of the direct photon and dilepton are found to be a sensitive probe of the space-time evolution of the chiral condensate field.

Phase Randomization and Doppler Peaks in the CMB Angular Power Spectrum

Using the Boltzmann equation with a Langevin-like term describing the stochastic force in a baryon-photon plasma, we investigate the influence of the incoherent electron-photon scattering on the subhorizon evolution of the cosmic microwave radiation. The stochastic fluctuation caused by each collision on average is found to be small. Nevertheless, it leads to a significant Brownian drifting of the phase in the acoustic oscillation, and the coherent oscillations cannot be maintained during their dynamical evolution. As a consequence, the proposed Doppler peaks probably do not exist.

Domain Structure of a Disoriented Chiral Condensate From a Wavelet Perspective

We present a novel method for studying the formation of a disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) in high-energy hadronic and heavy-ion collisions utilizing a discrete wavelet transformation. Due to its salient feature of space-scale locality, the discrete wavelet proves to be very effective in probing physics simultaneously at different locations in phase space and at different scales. We show that the probability distributions of the neutral pion fraction for various rapidity-bin sizes have distinctive shapes in the case of a DCC and exhibit a delay in approaching the Gaussian distribution required by the Central Limit Theorem. We find the wavelet power spectrum for a DCC to exhibit a strong dependence on the scale while an equilibrium system and the standard dynamical models such as HIJING have a flat spectrum.

General Classical Solutions of Nonlinear $σ$-Model and Pion Charge Distribution of Disoriented Chiral Condensate

We obtain the general analytic solutions of the nonlinear $σ$-model in $3+1$ dimensions as the candidates for the disoriented chiral condensate (DCC). The nonuniformly isospin-orientated solutions are shown to be related to the uniformly oriented ones through the chiral (axial) rotations. We discuss the pion charge distribution arising from these solutions. The distribution $dP/df=1/(2\sqrt{f})$ holds for the uniform solutions in general and the nonuniform solutions in the $1+1$ boost invariant case. For the nonuniform solution in $1+1$ without a boost-invariance and in higher dimensions, the distribution does not hold in the integrated form. However, it is applicable to the pions selected from a small segment in the momentum phase space. We suggest that the nonuniform DCC's may correspond to the mini-Centauro events.

Partial $U(1)_A$ Restoration and $η$ Enhancement in High-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions

We calculate the thermally averaged rates for the $η$-$π$ conversion and $η$ scattering using the Di Vecchia-Veneziano model and t' Hooft model, which incorporate explicitly the $U(1)_A$ anomaly. Assuming an exponential suppression of the $U(1)_A$ anomaly, we also take into account the partial restoration of $U(1)_A$ symmetry at high temperatures. We find that the chemical equilibrium between $η$ and $π$ breaks up considerably earlier than the thermal equilibrium. Two distinct scenarios for the $η$ freeze-out are discussed and the corresponding chemical potentials are calculated. We predict an enhancement of the thermal $η$-production as a possible signal of the partial $U(1)_A$ restoration in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Reinterpretation of Thermal Dilepton Emission Rate by Spectral Functions

We reinterpret the dilepton emission rate from a hadronic gas expected to be produced in heavy ion collisions in terms of the spectral functions available from the $e^+e^-$ annihilation and the $τ$ lepton decays experiments. We take into account all possible hadronic state especially the multi-pion contributions to the dilepton emission and the parity mixing phenomenon due to the soft final-state corrections. A new compilation of the experimental data for the spectral functions is presented.

Isospin Coherence and Final-State Scattering of Disoriented Chiral Condensate

We examine the validity of the notion of the coherent state for pions and the quantum scattering effect in the final state of pion emission. When the number of particles is large, the effect caused by the small but finite mass difference between the neutral and charged pions can add up substantially in the quantum evolution of an initially coherent state. As a result, the states with quite different numbers of neutral or charged pions are essentially incoherent. The importance of the quantum scattering in the final-state isospin charge distribution of a disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) is investigated. We find that the scattering effect significantly reduces the spectacular Centauro and anti-Centauro events. The deformation of a charge distribution $dP/df$ predicted by the classical field theory is significant only for a DCC with the size of 10 fm or more.

Do W_L and H form a p-wave bound state?

We examine the possibility of bound state formation in the W_L H --> W_L H channel. The dynamical calculation using the N/D method indicates that when the interactions among the Goldstone and Higgs bosons become sufficiently strong, a p-wave state [I^G(J^P)=1^-(1^+)] may emerge.

How Disoriented Chiral Condensates Form: Quenching vs. Annealing

We demonstrate that semiclassical fluctuations, their relaxation, and the chiral phase transition are automatically incorporated in the numerical simulations of the classical equations of motion in the linear $σ$-model when longitudinal and transverse expansions are included. We find that domains of disoriented chiral condensate with 4--5 fm in size can form through a quench while an annealing leads to domains of smaller sizes. We also demonstrate that quenching cannot be achieved by relaxing a chirally symmetric system through expansion.

Signals of Disoriented Chiral Condensate

If a disoriented chiral condensate is created over an extended space-time region following a rapid cooling in hadronic or nuclear collisions, the misalignment of the condensate with the electroweak symmetry breaking can generate observable effects in the processes which involve both strong and electromagnetic interactions. We point out the relevance of the dilepton decay of light vector mesons as a signal for formation of the disoriented condensate. We predict that the decay ρ^0 to dileptons will be suppressed and/or the ρresonance peak widens, while the decay ωto dileptons will not be affected by the condensate.

Cluster Structure of Disoriented Chiral Condensates in Rapidity Distribution

We study the creation of disoriented chiral condensates with some initial boundary conditions that may be expected in the relativistic heavy ion collisions. The equations of motion in the linear $σ$-model are solved numerically with and without a Lorentz-boost invariance. We suggest that a distinct cluster structure of coherent pion production in the rapidity distribution may emerge due to a quench and may be observed in experiments.

Vacuum Misalignment in High Energy Collisions

We study a recent proposal to observe the disoriented chiral condensate in high energy collisions. In order to produce a large fluctuation in pion probability distribution, a large size of the correlated region is essential. We study the role of the intrinsic symmetry breaking and suggest that a negative (mass)^2 of mesons arising from a misaligned vacuum may be a candidate for such a mechanism. We further point out a possibility to observe unsuppressed strong $CP$ violation in the disoriented vacuum phase.

Self-mass for Massive Quark

We study the behavior of the self-mass for a quark with a current mass larger than $Λ_QCD$, as a function of its Euclidean momentum and mass, in QCD. An expression for the Bethe-Salpeter kernel of the Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation valid in both the infrared and ultraviolet regions is obtained based on a renormalization group analysis. The resulting SD equation is solved numerically. It is found that the quark constituent mass at zero momentum is substantially enhanced due to its effective gauge interaction. The solution in the ultraviolet region agrees well with the known asymptotic solution. The self-mass scales exactly as the on-shell current mass at a fixed momentum.

On the Anomalous Discrete Symmetry

We examine an interesting scenario to solve the domain wall problem recently suggested by Preskill, Trivedi, Wilczek and Wise. The effective potential is calculated in the presence of the QCD axial anomaly. It is shown that some discrete symmetries such as CP and Z_2 can be anomalous due to a so-called $K$-term induced by instantons. We point out that Z_2 domain-wall problem in the two-doublet standard model can be resolved by two types of solutions: the CP-conserving one and the CP-breaking one. In the first case, there exist two Z_2-related local minima whose energy splitting is provided by the instanton effect. In the second case, there is only one unique vacuum so that the domain walls do not form at all. The consequences of this new source of CP violation are discussed and shown to be well within the experimental limits in weak interactions.

The Measure of Strong CP Violation

We investigate a controversial issue on the measure of CP violation in strong in teractions. In the presence of nontrivial topological gauge configurations, the $θ$-term in QCD has a profound effect: it breaks the CP symmetry. The CP-violating amplitude is shown to be determined by the vacuum tunneling process, where the semiclassical method makes most sense. We discuss a long-standing dispute on whether the instanton dynamics satisfies or not the anomalous Ward identity (AWI). The strong CP violation measure, when complying with the vacuum alignment, is proportional to the topological susceptibility. We obtain an effective CP-violating lagrangian different from that provided by Baluni. To solve the IR divergence problem of the instanton computation, We present a ``classically gauged'' Georgi-Manohar model and derive an effective potential which uniquely determines an explicit $U(1)_A$ symmetry breaking sector. The CP violation effects are analyzed in this model. It is shown that the strong CP problem and the $U(1)$ problem are closely related. Some possible solutions to both problems are also discussed with new insights.
