Quantum Criticality in Monolayer Amorphous Carbon

Amorphous solids represent the extreme limit of broken translational symmetry, in which the absence of long-range order removes well-defined crystal momenta and invalidates the Bloch description of electronic states. Monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) has emerged as a unique realization of a strictly two-dimensional (2D) amorphous lattice defined by a structurally contiguous but topologically disordered $sp^2$-bonded random network devoid of any defined long-range crystal symmetry. From atomic-resolution measurements of multifractal wavefunctions, we show that disorder in MAC effectively localizes the low-energy part of the electronic spectrum but retains an extended critical-like state near the band centre ($E\sim 0$). We conjecture that this state is protected from topological disorder by remnant chiral symmetry surviving within the continuous random network, described by a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) topological term. Near criticality, we verify the multifractal scaling relation $η= -Δ_2$, providing quantitative agreement between independently measured spatial correlation decay and multifractal scaling exponents. Our results are confirmed by atomistic tight-binding calculations that closely mirror the multifractal scaling near $E\sim 0$. Our results establish MAC as the first strictly 2D amorphous electronic system to exhibit Anderson criticality driven purely by topological disorder

Controlling an altermagnetic spin density wave in the kagome magnet CsCr3Sb5

The interplay of charge and spin orders lies at the heart of correlated electron physics and plays a critical role in the emergence of unconventional quantum phases. Kagome magnets provide a particularly promising platform to investigate these phenomena, owing to their geometrically frustrated lattice structure. However, resolving spin and charge orders microscopically and establishing ways to control them remain fundamental challenges. Here, we demonstrate magnetic field control of an altermagnetic spin density wave order intertwined with charge density wave order in kagome magnet CsCr3Sb5. Scanning tunneling microscopy down to deep cryogenic temperature of 50 mK reveals two previously unreported charge density wave orders in the Sb surface. Density functional theory confirms that one of them is coupled to a spin density wave with an altermagnetic ground state. The charge density waves can be tuned in both amplitude and phase by an external magnetic field, reflected in domain switching and stripe sliding of the charge density wave. Our findings deepen the understanding of symmetry-breaking in kagome systems, providing a tunable platform to explore the interplay of electronic correlation with emergent quantum magnetism.

Multi-Band Superconductivity in Strongly Hybridized 1T'-WTe$_2$/NbSe$_2$ Heterostructures

The interplay of topology and superconductivity has become a subject of intense research in condensed matter physics for the pursuit of topologically non-trivial forms of superconducting pairing. An intrinsically normal-conducting material can inherit superconductivity via electrical contact to a parent superconductor via the proximity effect, usually understood as Andreev reflection at the interface between the distinct electronic structures of two separate conductors. However, at high interface transparency, strong coupling inevitably leads to changes in the band structure, locally, owing to hybridization of electronic states. Here, we investigate such strongly proximity-coupled heterostructures of monolayer 1T'-WTe$_2$, grown on NbSe$_2$ by van-der-Waals epitaxy. The superconducting local density of states (LDOS), resolved in scanning tunneling spectroscopy down to 500~mK, reflects a hybrid electronic structure, well-described by a multi-band framework based on the McMillan equations which captures the multi-band superconductivity inherent to the NbSe$_2$ substrate and that induced by proximity in WTe$_2$, self-consistently. Our material-specific tight-binding model captures the hybridized heterostructure quantitatively, and confirms that strong inter-layer hopping gives rise to a semi-metallic density of states in the 2D WTe$_2$ bulk, even for nominally band-insulating crystals. The model further accurately predicts the measured order parameter $Δ\simeq 0.6$~meV induced in the WTe$_2$ monolayer bulk, stable beyond a 2~T magnetic field. We believe that our detailed multi-band analysis of the hybrid electronic structure provides a useful tool for sensitive spatial mapping of induced order parameters in proximitized atomically thin topological materials.
