Electrically Switchable van der Waals Magnon Valves

Van der Waals magnets have emerged as a fertile ground for the exploration of highly tunable spin physics and spin-related technology. Two-dimensional (2D) magnons in van der Waals magnets are collective excitation of spins under strong confinement. Although considerable progress has been made in understanding 2D magnons, a crucial magnon device called the van der Waals magnon valve, in which the magnon signal can be completely and repeatedly turned on and off electrically, has yet to be realized. Here we demonstrate such magnon valves based on van der Waals antiferromagnetic insulator MnPS3. By applying DC electric current through the gate electrode, we show that the second harmonic thermal magnon (SHM) signal can be tuned from positive to negative. The guaranteed zero crossing during this tuning demonstrates a complete blocking of SHM transmission, arising from the nonlinear gate dependence of the non-equilibrium magnon density in the 2D spin channel. Using the switchable magnon valves we demonstrate a magnon-based inverter. These results illustrate the potential of van der Waals anti-ferromagnets for studying highly tunable spin-wave physics and for application in magnon-base circuitry in future information technology.

Understanding the flat band in 1T-TaS2 using a rotated basis

Electronic flat bands serve as a unique platform to achieve strongly-correlated phases. The emergence of a flat band around the Fermi level in 1T-TaS$_2$ in accompany with the development of a $\sqrt{13}\times\sqrt{13}$ charge density wave (CDW) superlattice has long been noticed experimentally, but a transparent theoretical understanding remains elusive. We show that without CDW, the primary feature of the $1\times1$ bands can be fitted by a simple trigonometric function, and physically understood by choosing a rotated $\tilde{t}_{2g}$ basis with the principle axes aligning to the tilted TaS$_6$ octahedron. Using this basis, we trace the band evolution in the $\sqrt{13}\times\sqrt{13}$ superlattice by progressively including different CDW effects. We point out that CDW strongly rehybridizes the three $\tilde{t}_{2g}$ orbitals, which leads to the formation of a well-localized molecular orbital and spawns the flat band.

Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture for non-ordinary modular forms and Eisenstein congruences on $\mathrm{GU}(3,1)$

In this paper we prove one side divisibility of the Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture for Rankin-Selberg product of a weight two cusp form and an ordinary CM form of higher weight, using congruences between Klingen Eisenstein series and cusp forms on $\mathrm{GU}(3,1)$, generalizing earlier result of the third-named author to allow non-ordinary cusp forms. The main result is a key input in the third author's proof for Kobayashi's $\pm$-main conjecture for supersingular elliptic curves. The new ingredient here is developing a semi-ordinary Hida theory along an appropriate smaller weight space, and a study of the semi-ordinary Eisenstein family.

Matching-oriented Product Quantization For Ad-hoc Retrieval

Product quantization (PQ) is a widely used technique for ad-hoc retrieval. Recent studies propose supervised PQ, where the embedding and quantization models can be jointly trained with supervised learning. However, there is a lack of appropriate formulation of the joint training objective; thus, the improvements over previous non-supervised baselines are limited in reality. In this work, we propose the Matching-oriented Product Quantization (MoPQ), where a novel objective Multinoulli Contrastive Loss (MCL) is formulated. With the minimization of MCL, we are able to maximize the matching probability of query and ground-truth key, which contributes to the optimal retrieval accuracy. Given that the exact computation of MCL is intractable due to the demand of vast contrastive samples, we further propose the Differentiable Cross-device Sampling (DCS), which significantly augments the contrastive samples for precise approximation of MCL. We conduct extensive experimental studies on four real-world datasets, whose results verify the effectiveness of MoPQ. The code is available at https://github.com/microsoft/MoPQ.

A Modular Magneto-Inductive Sensor for Low Vector Magnetic Field Measurements

The low magnetic field measurement has been utilized since ancient times in order to find economic resources, to detect magnetic anomalies, etc. In this case, the vector magnetic survey can simultaneously obtain the modulus and direction information of the magnetic field, which can contribute to obtaining more precise information and characteristics of magnetic field resources. This paper is concerned with the possibility of vector magnetic field measurement with a magneto-inductive (MI) magnetic sensor. To evaluate the capability of the MI sensor, a test platform is set up and its performance including the noise floor, the resolution, the sensitivity, etc., are comprehensively characterized. Further, a comparative geomagnetic observation and magnetic anomaly detection among the proposed MI sensor, a high-precision Overhauser sensor, and a commonly used and accepted commercial MI sensor are conducted. The experimental results identify the capability of the proposed MI sensor in weak magnetic detection.

Testing density functional theory in a quantum Ising chain

By using the quantum Ising chain as a test bed and treating the spin polarization along the external transverse field as the "generalized density", we examine the performance of different levels of density functional approximations parallel to those widely used for interacting electrons, such as local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We show that by adding the lowest-order and nearest-neighbor density variation correction to the simple LDA, a semi-local energy functional in the spirit of GGA is almost exact over a wide range of inhomogeneous density distribution. In addition, the LDA and GGA error structures bear a high level of resemblance to the quantum phase diagram of the system. These results provide insights into the triumph and failure of these approximations in a general context.

Controlled synthesis of MoxW1-xTe2 atomic layers with emergent quantum states

Recently, new states of matter like superconducting or topological quantum states were found in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and manifested themselves in a series of exotic physical behaviors. Such phenomena have been demonstrated to exist in a series of transition metal tellurides including MoTe2, WTe2 and alloyed MoxW1-xTe2. However, the behaviors in the alloy system have been rarely addressed due to their difficulty in obtaining atomic layers with controlled composition, albeit the alloy offers a great platform to tune the quantum states. Here, we report a facile CVD method to synthesize the MoxW1-xTe2 with controllable thickness and chemical composition ratios. The atomic structure of monolayer MoxW1-xTe2 alloy was experimentally confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Importantly, two different transport behaviors including superconducting and Weyl semimetal (WSM) states were observed in Mo-rich Mo0.8W0.2Te2 and W-rich Mo0.2W0.8Te2 samples respectively. Our results show that the electrical properties of MoxW1-xTe2 can be tuned by controlling the chemical composition, demonstrating our controllable CVD growth method is an efficient strategy to manipulate the physical properties of TMDCs. Meanwhile, it provides a perspective on further comprehension and shed light on the design of device with topological multicomponent TMDCs materials.

Mesh Total Generalized Variation for Denoising

Total Generalized Variation (TGV) has recently been proven certainly successful in image processing for preserving sharp features as well as smooth transition variations. However, none of the existing works aims at numerically calculating TGV over triangular meshes. In this paper, we develop a novel numerical framework to discretize the second-order TGV over triangular meshes. Further, we propose a TGV-based variational model to restore the face normal field for mesh denoising. The TGV regularization in the proposed model is represented by a combination of a first- and second-order term, which can be automatically balanced. This TGV regularization is able to locate sharp features and preserve them via the first-order term, while recognize smoothly curved regions and recover them via the second-order term. To solve the optimization problem, we introduce an efficient iterative algorithm based on variable-splitting and augmented Lagrangian method. Extensive results and comparisons on synthetic and real scanning data validate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods visually and numerically.

Thickness-Driven Quantum Anomalous Hall Phase Transition in Magnetic Topological Insulator Thin Films

The quantized version of anomalous Hall effect realized in magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) has great potential for the development of topological quantum physics and low-power electronic/spintronic applications. To enable dissipationless chiral edge conduction at zero magnetic field, effective exchange field arisen from the aligned magnetic dopants needs to be large enough to yield specific spin sub-band configurations. Here we report the thickness-tailored quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3 thin films by tuning the system across the two-dimensional (2D) limit. In addition to the Chern number-related metal-to-insulator QAH phase transition, we also demonstrate that the induced hybridization gap plays an indispensable role in determining the ground magnetic state of the MTIs, namely the spontaneous magnetization owning to considerable Van Vleck spin susceptibility guarantees the zero-field QAH state with unitary scaling law in thick samples, while the quantization of the Hall conductance can only be achieved with the assistance of external magnetic fields in ultra-thin films. The modulation of topology and magnetism through structural engineering may provide a useful guidance for the pursuit of QAH-based new phase diagrams and functionalities.

Multi-Interest-Aware User Modeling for Large-Scale Sequential Recommendations

Precise user modeling is critical for online personalized recommendation services. Generally, users' interests are diverse and are not limited to a single aspect, which is particularly evident when their behaviors are observed for a longer time. For example, a user may demonstrate interests in cats/dogs, dancing and food \& delights when browsing short videos on Tik Tok; the same user may show interests in real estate and women's wear in her web browsing behaviors. Traditional models tend to encode a user's behaviors into a single embedding vector, which do not have enough capacity to effectively capture her diverse interests. This paper proposes a Sequential User Matrix (SUM) to accurately and efficiently capture users' diverse interests. SUM models user behavior with a multi-channel network, with each channel representing a different aspect of the user's interests. User states in different channels are updated by an \emph{erase-and-add} paradigm with interest- and instance-level attention. We further propose a local proximity debuff component and a highway connection component to make the model more robust and accurate. SUM can be maintained and updated incrementally, making it feasible to be deployed for large-scale online serving. We conduct extensive experiments on two datasets. Results demonstrate that SUM consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baselines.

Hidden Frustration in Double-Perovskite CaFeTi$_2$O$_6$

We study the magnetic properties of CaFeTi$_2$O$_6$ (CFTO) by high-field magnetization and specific heat measurements. While the magnetic susceptibility data yield a vanishingly small Curie-Weiss temperature, the magnetic moments are not fully polarized in magnetic field up to 60 T, which reveals a large spin exchange energy scale. Yet, the system shows no long range magnetic order but a spin-glass-like state below 5.5 K in zero field, indicating strong magnetic frustration in this system. Applying magnetic field gradually suppresses the spin-glass-like state and gives rise to a potential quantum spin liquid state whose low-temperature specific heat exhibits a $T^{1.6}$ power-law. Crucially, conventional mechanisms for frustration do not apply to this system as it possesses neither apparent geometrical frustration nor exchange frustration. We suggest that the orbital modulation of exchange interaction is likely the source of hidden frustration in CFTO, and its full characterization may open a new route in the quest for quantum spin liquids.

Locality Constrained Analysis Dictionary Learning via K-SVD Algorithm

Recent years, analysis dictionary learning (ADL) and its applications for classification have been well developed, due to its flexible projective ability and low classification complexity. With the learned analysis dictionary, test samples can be transformed into a sparse subspace for classification efficiently. However, the underling locality of sample data has rarely been explored in analysis dictionary to enhance the discriminative capability of the classifier. In this paper, we propose a novel locality constrained analysis dictionary learning model with a synthesis K-SVD algorithm (SK-LADL). It considers the intrinsic geometric properties by imposing graph regularization to uncover the geometric structure for the image data. Through the learned analysis dictionary, we transform the image to a new and compact space where the manifold assumption can be further guaranteed. thus, the local geometrical structure of images can be preserved in sparse representation coefficients. Moreover, the SK-LADL model is iteratively solved by the synthesis K-SVD and gradient technique. Experimental results on image classification validate the performance superiority of our SK-LADL model.

AdsGNN: Behavior-Graph Augmented Relevance Modeling in Sponsored Search

Sponsored search ads appear next to search results when people look for products and services on search engines. In recent years, they have become one of the most lucrative channels for marketing. As the fundamental basis of search ads, relevance modeling has attracted increasing attention due to the significant research challenges and tremendous practical value. Most existing approaches solely rely on the semantic information in the input query-ad pair, while the pure semantic information in the short ads data is not sufficient to fully identify user's search intents. Our motivation lies in incorporating the tremendous amount of unsupervised user behavior data from the historical search logs as the complementary graph to facilitate relevance modeling. In this paper, we extensively investigate how to naturally fuse the semantic textual information with the user behavior graph, and further propose three novel AdsGNN models to aggregate topological neighborhood from the perspectives of nodes, edges and tokens. Furthermore, two critical but rarely investigated problems, domain-specific pre-training and long-tail ads matching, are studied thoroughly. Empirically, we evaluate the AdsGNN models over the large industry dataset, and the experimental results of online/offline tests consistently demonstrate the superiority of our proposal.

Hybrid Encoder: Towards Efficient and Precise Native AdsRecommendation via Hybrid Transformer Encoding Networks

Transformer encoding networks have been proved to be a powerful tool of understanding natural languages. They are playing a critical role in native ads service, which facilitates the recommendation of appropriate ads based on user's web browsing history. For the sake of efficient recommendation, conventional methods would generate user and advertisement embeddings independently with a siamese transformer encoder, such that approximate nearest neighbour search (ANN) can be leveraged. Given that the underlying semantic about user and ad can be complicated, such independently generated embeddings are prone to information loss, which leads to inferior recommendation quality. Although another encoding strategy, the cross encoder, can be much more accurate, it will lead to huge running cost and become infeasible for realtime services, like native ads recommendation. In this work, we propose hybrid encoder, which makes efficient and precise native ads recommendation through two consecutive steps: retrieval and ranking. In the retrieval step, user and ad are encoded with a siamese component, which enables relevant candidates to be retrieved via ANN search. In the ranking step, it further represents each ad with disentangled embeddings and each user with ad-related embeddings, which contributes to the fine-grained selection of high-quality ads from the candidate set. Both steps are light-weighted, thanks to the pre-computed and cached intermedia results. To optimize the hybrid encoder's performance in this two-stage workflow, a progressive training pipeline is developed, which builds up the model's capability in the retrieval and ranking task step-by-step. The hybrid encoder's effectiveness is experimentally verified: with very little additional cost, it outperforms the siamese encoder significantly and achieves comparable recommendation quality as the cross encoder.

Structural Generalizability: The Case of Similarity Search

Graph similarity search algorithms usually leverage the structural properties of a database. Hence, these algorithms are effective only on some structural variations of the data and are ineffective on other forms, which makes them hard to use. Ideally, one would like to design a data analytics algorithm that is structurally robust, i.e., it returns essentially the same accurate results over all possible structural variations of a dataset. We propose a novel approach to create a structurally robust similarity search algorithm over graph databases. We leverage the classic insight in the database literature that schematic variations are caused by having constraints in the database. We then present RelSim algorithm which is provably structurally robust under these variations. Our empirical studies show that our proposed algorithms are structurally robust while being efficient and as effective as or more effective than the state-of-the-art similarity search algorithms.

Training Large-Scale News Recommenders with Pretrained Language Models in the Loop

News recommendation calls for deep insights of news articles' underlying semantics. Therefore, pretrained language models (PLMs), like BERT and RoBERTa, may substantially contribute to the recommendation quality. However, it's extremely challenging to have news recommenders trained together with such big models: the learning of news recommenders requires intensive news encoding operations, whose cost is prohibitive if PLMs are used as the news encoder. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, {SpeedyFeed}, which efficiently trains PLMs-based news recommenders of superior quality. SpeedyFeed is highlighted for its light-weighted encoding pipeline, which gives rise to three major advantages. Firstly, it makes the intermedia results fully reusable for the training workflow, which removes most of the repetitive but redundant encoding operations. Secondly, it improves the data efficiency of the training workflow, where non-informative data can be eliminated from encoding. Thirdly, it further saves the cost by leveraging simplified news encoding and compact news representation. Extensive experiments show that SpeedyFeed leads to more than 100$\times$ acceleration of the training process, which enables big models to be trained efficiently and effectively over massive user data. The well-trained PLMs-based model from SpeedyFeed demonstrates highly competitive performance, where it outperforms the state-of-the-art news recommenders with significant margins. SpeedyFeed is also a model-agnostic framework, which is potentially applicable to a wide spectrum of content-based recommender systems; therefore, the whole framework is open-sourced to facilitate the progress in related areas.

Robust W-GAN-Based Estimation Under Wasserstein Contamination

Robust estimation is an important problem in statistics which aims at providing a reasonable estimator when the data-generating distribution lies within an appropriately defined ball around an uncontaminated distribution. Although minimax rates of estimation have been established in recent years, many existing robust estimators with provably optimal convergence rates are also computationally intractable. In this paper, we study several estimation problems under a Wasserstein contamination model and present computationally tractable estimators motivated by generative adversarial networks (GANs). Specifically, we analyze properties of Wasserstein GAN-based estimators for location estimation, covariance matrix estimation, and linear regression and show that our proposed estimators are minimax optimal in many scenarios. Finally, we present numerical results which demonstrate the effectiveness of our estimators.

Heterogeneous Similarity Graph Neural Network on Electronic Health Records

Mining Electronic Health Records (EHRs) becomes a promising topic because of the rich information they contain. By learning from EHRs, machine learning models can be built to help human experts to make medical decisions and thus improve healthcare quality. Recently, many models based on sequential or graph models are proposed to achieve this goal. EHRs contain multiple entities and relations and can be viewed as a heterogeneous graph. However, previous studies ignore the heterogeneity in EHRs. On the other hand, current heterogeneous graph neural networks cannot be simply used on an EHR graph because of the existence of hub nodes in it. To address this issue, we propose Heterogeneous Similarity Graph Neural Network (HSGNN) analyze EHRs with a novel heterogeneous GNN. Our framework consists of two parts: one is a preprocessing method and the other is an end-to-end GNN. The preprocessing method normalizes edges and splits the EHR graph into multiple homogeneous graphs while each homogeneous graph contains partial information of the original EHR graph. The GNN takes all homogeneous graphs as input and fuses all of them into one graph to make a prediction. Experimental results show that HSGNN outperforms other baselines in the diagnosis prediction task.
