Secure Communication in Dynamic RDARS-Driven Systems

In this letter, we investigate a dynamic reconfigurable distributed antenna and reflection surface (RDARS)-driven secure communication system, where the working mode of the RDARS can be flexibly configured. We aim to maximize the secrecy rate by jointly designing the active beamforming vectors, reflection coefficients, and the channel-aware mode selection matrix. To address the non-convex binary and cardinality constraints introduced by dynamic mode selection, we propose an efficient alternating optimization (AO) framework that employs penalty-based fractional programming (FP) and successive convex approximation (SCA) transformations. Simulation results demonstrate the potential of RDARS in enhancing the secrecy rate and show its superiority compared to existing reflection surface-based schemes.

Sustainable Placement with Cost Minimization in Wireless Digital Twin Networks

Digital twin (DT) technology has a high potential to satisfy different requirements of the ever-expanding new applications. Nonetheless, the DT placement in wireless digital twin networks (WDTNs) poses a significant challenge due to the conflict between unpredictable workloads and the limited capacity of edge servers. In other words, each edge server has a risk of overload when handling an excessive number of tasks or services. Overload risks can have detrimental effects on a network's sustainability, yet this aspect is often overlooked in the literature. In this paper, we aim to study the sustainability-aware DT placement problem for WDTNs from a cost minimization perspective. To this end, we formulate the DT placement-driven cost optimization problem as a chance-constrained integer programming problem. For tractability, we transform the original non-deterministic problem into a deterministic integer linear programming (ILP) problem using the sample average approximation (SAA) approach. We prove that the transformed problem remains NP-hard and thus finding a global optimal solution is very difficult. To strike a balance between time efficiency and performance guarantee, we propose an improved local search algorithm for this ILP by identifying high-quality starting states from historical search data and enhancing the search process. Numerical results show a lower cost and higher efficiency of our proposed method compared with the previous schemes.

Secure Semantic Communications: From Perspective of Physical Layer Security

Semantic communications have been envisioned as a potential technique that goes beyond Shannon paradigm. Unlike modern communications that provide bit-level security, the eaves-dropping of semantic communications poses a significant risk of potentially exposing intention of legitimate user. To address this challenge, a novel deep neural network (DNN) enabled secure semantic communication (DeepSSC) system is developed by capitalizing on physical layer security. To balance the tradeoff between security and reliability, a two-phase training method for DNNs is devised. Particularly, Phase I aims at semantic recovery of legitimate user, while Phase II attempts to minimize the leakage of semantic information to eavesdroppers. The loss functions of DeepSSC in Phases I and II are respectively designed according to Shannon capacity and secure channel capacity, which are approximated with variational inference. Moreover, we define the metric of secure bilingual evaluation understudy (S-BLEU) to assess the security of semantic communications. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that DeepSSC achieves a significant boost to semantic security particularly in high signal-to-noise ratio regime, despite a minor degradation of reliability.

Crystal-symmetry-paired spin-valley locking in a layered room-temperature antiferromagnet

Recent theoretical efforts predicted a type of unconventional antiferromagnet characterized by the crystal symmetry C (rotation or mirror), which connects antiferromagnetic sublattices in real space and simultaneously couples spin and momentum in reciprocal space. This results in a unique C-paired spin-valley locking (SVL) and corresponding novel properties such as piezomagnetism and noncollinear spin current even without spin-orbit coupling. However, the unconventional antiferromagnets reported thus far are not layered materials, limiting their potential in spintronic applications. Additionally, they do not meet the necessary symmetry requirements for nonrelativistic spin current. Here, we report the realization of C-paired SVL in a layered room-temperature antiferromagnetic compound, Rb1-δV2Te2O. Spin resolved photoemission measurements directly demonstrate the opposite spin splitting between C-paired valleys. Quasi-particle interference patterns reveal the suppression of inter-valley scattering due to the spin selection rules, as a direct consequence of C-paired SVL. All these experiments are well consistent with the results obtained from first-principles calculations. Our observations represent the first realization of layered antiferromagnets with C-paired SVL, enabling both the advantages of layered materials and possible control through crystal symmetry manipulation. These results hold significant promise and broad implications for advancements in magnetism, electronics, and information technology.

Measurement-based infused circuits for variational quantum eigensolvers

Variational quantum eigensolvers (VQEs) are successful algorithms for studying physical systems on quantum computers. Recently, they were extended to the measurement-based model of quantum computing, bringing resource graph states and their advantages into the realm of quantum simulation. In this work, we incorporate such ideas into traditional VQE circuits. This enables novel problem-informed designs and versatile implementations of many-body Hamiltonians. We showcase our approach on real superconducting quantum computers by performing VQE simulations of testbed systems including the perturbed planar code, Z2 lattice gauge theory, 1D quantum chromodynamics, and the LiH molecule.

A Novel HARQ-CC Assisted SCMA Scheme

This letter proposes a novel hybrid automatic repeat request with chase combining assisted sparse code multiple access (HARQ-CC-SCMA) scheme. Depending on whether the same superimposed packet are retransmitted, synchronous and asynchronous modes are considered for retransmissions. Moreover, factor graph aggregation (FGA) and Log-likelihood ratio combination (LLRC) are proposed for multi-user detection. Regarding FGA, a large-scale factor graph is constructed by combining all the received superimposed signals and message passing algorithm (MAP) is applied to calculate log-likelihood ratio (LLR). Whereas, owing to the same unsuccessful messages required to be retransmitted, LLRC adds up LLRs of erroneously received packets in previous HARQ rounds together with currently received packets for channel decoding and saves the LLRs for failed users. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are preformed to show that FGA surpasses LLRC and HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) in synchronous mode. However, LLRC performs better than FGA at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in asynchronous mode. This is because failed messages after the maximum allowable HARQ rounds in this mode can yield significant error propagation in low SNR regime.

Variational Bayesian Learning Based Localization and Channel Reconstruction in RIS-aided Systems

The emerging immersive and autonomous services have posed stringent requirements on both communications and localization. By considering the great potential of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), this paper focuses on the joint channel estimation and localization for RIS-aided wireless systems. As opposed to existing works that treat channel estimation and localization independently, this paper exploits the intrinsic coupling and nonlinear relationships between the channel parameters and user location for enhancement of both localization and channel reconstruction. By noticing the non-convex, nonlinear objective function and the sparser angle pattern, a variational Bayesian learning-based framework is developed to jointly estimate the channel parameters and user location through leveraging an effective approximation of the posterior distribution. The proposed framework is capable of unifying near-field and far-field scenarios owing to exploitation of sparsity of the angular domain. Since the joint channel and location estimation problem has a closed-form solution in each iteration, our proposed iterative algorithm performs better than the conventional particle swarm optimization (PSO) and maximum likelihood (ML) based ones in terms of computational complexity. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm almost reaches the Bayesian Cramer-Rao bound (BCRB) and achieves a superior estimation accuracy by comparing to the PSO and the ML algorithms.

Enhancing Quantum Computation via Superposition of Quantum Gates

Overcoming the influence of noise and imperfections in quantum devices is one of the main challenges for viable quantum applications. In this article, we present different protocols, which we denote as "superposed quantum error mitigation", that enhance the fidelity of single gates or entire computations by performing them in coherent superposition. Our results demonstrate that via our methods, significant noise suppression can be achieved for most kinds of decoherence and standard experimental parameter regimes. Our protocols can be either deterministic, such that the outcome is never post-selected, or probabilistic, in which case the resulting state must be discarded unless a well-specified condition is met. By using sufficiently many resources and working under broad assumptions, our methods can yield the desired output state with unit fidelity. Finally, we analyze our approach for gate-based, measurement-based and interferometric-based models, demonstrating the applicability in all cases and investigating the fundamental mechanisms they rely upon.

Superposed Quantum Error Mitigation

Overcoming the influence of noise and imperfections is a major challenge in quantum computing. Here, we present an approach based on applying a desired unitary computation in superposition between the system of interest and some auxiliary states. We demonstrate, numerically and on the IBM Quantum Platform, that parallel applications of the same operation lead to significant noise mitigation when arbitrary noise processes are considered. We first design probabilistic implementations of our scheme that are plug and play, independent of the noise characteristic and require no postprocessing. We then enhance the success probability (up to deterministic) using adaptive corrections. We provide an analysis of our protocol performance and demonstrate that unit fidelity can be achieved asymptotically. Our approaches are suitable to both standard gate-based and measurement-based computational models.

Optimistic Prediction of Synchronization-Reversal Data Races

Dynamic data race detection has emerged as a key technique for ensuring reliability of concurrent software in practice. However, dynamic approaches can often miss data races owing to nondeterminism in the thread scheduler. Predictive race detection techniques cater to this shortcoming by inferring alternate executions that may expose data races without re-executing the underlying program. More formally, the dynamic data race prediction problem asks, given a trace σof an execution of a concurrent program, can σbe correctly reordered to expose a data race? Existing state-of-the art techniques for data race prediction either do not scale to executions arising from real world concurrent software, or only expose a limited class of data races, such as those that can be exposed without reversing the order of synchronization operations. In general, exposing data races by reasoning about synchronization reversals is an intractable problem. In this work, we identify a class of data races, called Optimistic Sync(hronization)-Reversal races that can be detected in a tractable manner and often include non-trivial data races that cannot be exposed by prior tractable techniques. We also propose a sound algorithm OSR for detecting all optimistic sync-reversal data races in overall quadratic time, and show that the algorithm is optimal by establishing a matching lower bound. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of OSR on our extensive suite of benchmarks, OSR reports the largest number of data races, and scales well to large execution traces.

HARQ-IR Aided Short Packet Communications: BLER Analysis and Throughput Maximization

This paper introduces hybrid automatic repeat request with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) to boost the reliability of short packet communications. The finite blocklength information theory and correlated decoding events tremendously preclude the analysis of average block error rate (BLER). Fortunately, the recursive form of average BLER motivates us to calculate its value through the trapezoidal approximation and Gauss-Laguerre quadrature. Moreover, the asymptotic analysis is performed to derive a simple expression for the average BLER at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Then, we study the maximization of long term average throughput (LTAT) via power allocation meanwhile ensuring the power and the BLER constraints. For tractability, the asymptotic BLER is employed to solve the problem through geometric programming (GP). However, the GP-based solution underestimates the LTAT at low SNR due to a large approximation error in this case. Alternatively, we also develop a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based framework to learn power allocation policy. In particular, the optimization problem is transformed into a constrained Markov decision process, which is solved by integrating deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) with subgradient method. The numerical results finally demonstrate that the DRL-based method outperforms the GP-based one at low SNR, albeit at the cost of increasing computational burden.

X2-Softmax: Margin Adaptive Loss Function for Face Recognition

Learning the discriminative features of different faces is an important task in face recognition. By extracting face features in neural networks, it becomes easy to measure the similarity of different face images, which makes face recognition possible. To enhance the neural network's face feature separability, incorporating an angular margin during training is common practice. State-of-the-art loss functions CosFace and ArcFace apply fixed margins between weights of classes to enhance the inter-class separation of face features. Since the distribution of samples in the training set is imbalanced, similarities between different identities are unequal. Therefore, using an inappropriately fixed angular margin may lead to the problem that the model is difficult to converge or the face features are not discriminative enough. It is more in line with our intuition that the margins are angular adaptive, which could increase with the angles between classes growing. In this paper, we propose a new angular margin loss named X2-Softmax. X2-Softmax loss has adaptive angular margins, which provide the margin that increases with the angle between different classes growing. The angular adaptive margin ensures model flexibility and effectively improves the effect of face recognition. We have trained the neural network with X2-Softmax loss on the MS1Mv3 dataset and tested it on several evaluation benchmarks to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our loss function.

Spectral-Efficiency and Energy-Efficiency of Variable-Length XP-HARQ

A variable-length cross-packet hybrid automatic repeat request (VL-XP-HARQ) is proposed to boost the spectral efficiency (SE) and the energy efficiency (EE) of communications. The SE is firstly derived in terms of the outage probabilities, with which the SE is proved to be upper bounded by the ergodic capacity (EC). Moreover, to facilitate the maximization of the SE, the asymptotic outage probability is obtained at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), with which the SE is maximized by properly choosing the number of new information bits while guaranteeing outage requirement. By applying Dinkelbach's transform, the fractional objective function is transformed into a subtraction form, which can be decomposed into multiple sub-problems through alternating optimization. By noticing that the asymptotic outage probability is a convex function, each sub-problem can be easily relaxed to a convex problem by adopting successive convex approximation (SCA). Besides, the EE of VL-XP-HARQ is also investigated. An upper bound of the EE is found and proved to be attainable. Furthermore, by aiming at maximizing the EE via power allocation while confining outage within a certain constraint, the methods to the maximization of SE are invoked to solve the similar fractional problem. Finally, numerical results are presented for verification.

Graph Convolutional Network Enabled Power-Constrained HARQ Strategy for URLLC

In this paper, a power-constrained hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) transmission strategy is developed to support ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). In particular, we aim to minimize the delivery latency of HARQ schemes over time-correlated fading channels, meanwhile ensuring the high reliability and limited power consumption. To ease the optimization, the simple asymptotic outage expressions of HARQ schemes are adopted. Furthermore, by noticing the non-convexity of the latency minimization problem and the intricate connection between different HARQ rounds, the graph convolutional network (GCN) is invoked for the optimal power solution owing to its powerful ability of handling the graph data. The primal-dual learning method is then leveraged to train the GCN weights. Consequently, the numerical results are presented for verification together with the comparisons among three HARQ schemes in terms of the latency and the reliability, where the three HARQ schemes include Type-I HARQ, HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC), and HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR). To recapitulate, it is revealed that HARQ-IR offers the lowest latency while guaranteeing the demanded reliability target under a stringent power constraint, albeit at the price of high coding complexity.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Empowered Rate Selection of XP-HARQ

The complex transmission mechanism of cross-packet hybrid automatic repeat request (XP-HARQ) hinders its optimal system design. To overcome this difficulty, this letter attempts to use the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to solve the rate selection problem of XP-HARQ over correlated fading channels. In particular, the long term average throughput (LTAT) is maximized by properly choosing the incremental information rate for each HARQ round on the basis of the outdated channel state information (CSI) available at the transmitter. The rate selection problem is first converted into a Markov decision process (MDP), which is then solved by capitalizing on the algorithm of deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) with prioritized experience replay. The simulation results finally corroborate the superiority of the proposed XP-HARQ scheme over the conventional HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) and the XP-HARQ with only statistical CSI.

Secure HARQ-IR-Aided Terahertz Communications

Terahertz (THz) communication is one of the most promising candidates to accommodate high-speed mobile data services. This paper proposes a secure hybrid automatic repeat request with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) aided THz communication scheme, where the transmission secrecy is ensured by confusing the eavesdropper with dummy messages. The connection and secrecy outage probabilities are then derived in closed-form. Besides, the tail behaviour of the connection outage probability in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is examined by carrying out the asymptotic analysis, and the upper bound of the secrecy outage probability is obtained in a simple form by capitalizing on large deviations. With these results, we take a step further to investigate the secrecy long term average throughput (LTAT). By noticing that HARQ-IR not only improves the reliability of the legitimate user, but also increases the probability of being eavesdropped, a robust rate adaption policy is finally proposed to maximize the LTAT while restricting the connection and secrecy outage probabilities within satisfactory requirements.

Chiral Anomaly Beyond Fermionic Paradigm

Two-dimensional magnets have manifested themselves as promising candidates for quantum devices. We here report that the edge and strain effects during the device fabrication with two-dimensional honeycomb ferromagnets such as CrX$_3$ (X=Cl, I, Br) and CrXTe$_3$ (X=Si, Ge) can be characterized by a (1+1)-dimensional magnon chiral anomaly beyond the fermionic paradigm. In the presence of zigzag edges, a pair of chiral bulk-edge magnon bands appear and cause an imbalance of left- and right-chirality magnons when subjected to nonuniform temperature or magnetic fields. In the presence of a uniaxial strain, the bulk Dirac magnons are broken into chiral magnon pseudo-Landau levels, resulting in a magnon chiral anomaly observable through a negative strain-resistivity of the magnetic dipole and heat. Our work demonstrates a chiral anomaly with (quasi)particles obeying non-fermionic statistics and will be instructive in understanding anomalous magnon transport.
