Global scheme of sweeping cluster algorithm to sample among topological sectors

Local constraint is closely related to the gauge field, so constrained models are usually effective low energy descriptions and important in condensed matter physics. On the other hand, local restriction hinders the application of numerical algorithms. In addition to the computational difficulties of the constraints, the various topological sectors which cannot be connected through local operators are also one of the key computational difficulties. Taking quantum dimer model as an example in this paper, we construct a global scheme based on sweeping cluster Monte Carlo method, which can sample among different topological sectors. In principle, this method can be generalized to other models.

Two-dimensional plasma density evolution local to the inversion layer during sawtooth crash events using Beam Emission Spectroscopy

We present methods for analyzing Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) data to obtain the plasma density evolution associated with rapid sawtooth crash events at the DIII-D tokamak. BES allows coverage over a 2-D spatial plane, inherently local measurements, with fast time responses, and therefore provides a valuable new channel for data during sawtooth events. A method is developed to remove sawtooth-induced edge-light pulses contained in the BES data. The edge light pulses appear to be from the $\rm{D}_α$ emission produced by edge recycling during sawtooth events, and are large enough that traditional spectroscopic filtering and data analysis techniques are insufficient to deduce physically meaningful quantities. A cross-calibration of 64 BES channels is performed using a novel method to ensure accurate measurements. For the large-amplitude density oscillations observed, we discuss and use the non-linear relationship between BES signal $δI/I_{0}$ and plasma density variation $δn_{e}/n_{e0}$. 2-D BES images cover a 8~cm~$\times$~20~cm region around the sawtooth inversion layer and show large-amplitude density oscillations, with additional significant spatial variations across the inversion layer, which grows and peaks near the time of the temperature crash. The edge light removal technique and method of converting large-amplitude $δI/I_{0}$ to $δn_{e}/n_{e0}$ presented here may help analyze other impulsive MHD phenomena in tokamaks.

Height-conserving quantum dimer models

We propose a height-conserving quantum dimer model (hQDM) such that the lattice sum of its associated height field is conserved, and that it admits a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point. The hQDM with minimal interaction range on the square lattice exhibits Hilbert space fragmentation and maps exactly to the XXZ spin model on the square lattice in certain Krylov subspaces. We obtain the ground-state phase diagram of hQDM via quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and demonstrate that a large portion of it is within the Krylov subspaces which admit the exact mapping to the XXZ model, with dimer ordered phases corresponding to easy-axis and easy-plane spin orders. At the RK point, the apparent dynamical exponents obtained from the single mode approximation and the height correlation function show drastically different behavior across the Krylov subspaces, exemplifying Hilbert space fragmentation and emergent glassy phenomena.

Bulk and edge dynamics of a 2D Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model

We study the dynamical properties of both bulk and edge spins of a two-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model mainly by using the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo method with stochastic analytic continuation. In the deep AKLT phase, we obtain a spin spectrum with flat band, which is a strong evidence for a localized state. Through the spectrum analysis, we see a clear continuous phase transition from the AKLT phase to the Néel phase in the model, and the energy gap becomes closed at the corresponding momentum point. In comparison with linear spin-wave theory, the differences show that there are strong interactions among magnons at high energies. With open boundary condition, the gap of edge spins in the AKLT phase closes at both the $Γ$ point and the $π$ point interestingly to emerge into a flat-band-like Luttinger liquid phase, which can be explained by symmetry and perturbation approximation. This paper helps us to better understand the completely different dynamical behaviors of bulk and edge spins in the symmetry protected topological phase.

Scaling of entanglement entropy at deconfined quantum criticality

We develop a nonequilibrium increment method to compute the Rényi entanglement entropy and investigate its scaling behavior at the deconfined critical (DQC) point via large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. To benchmark the method, we first show that at an conformally-invariant critical point of O(3) transition, the entanglement entropy exhibits universal scaling behavior of area law with logarithmic corner corrections and the obtained correction exponent represents the current central charge of the critical theory. Then we move on to the deconfined quantum critical point, where although we still observe similar scaling behavior but with a very different exponent. Namely, the corner correction exponent is found to be negative. Such a negative exponent is in sharp contrast with positivity condition of the Rényi entanglement entropy, which holds for unitary conformal field theories(CFT). Our results unambiguously reveal fundamental differences between DQC and quantum critical points(QCPs) described by unitary CFTs.

Channel-wise Knowledge Distillation for Dense Prediction

Knowledge distillation (KD) has been proven to be a simple and effective tool for training compact models. Almost all KD variants for dense prediction tasks align the student and teacher networks' feature maps in the spatial domain, typically by minimizing point-wise and/or pair-wise discrepancy. Observing that in semantic segmentation, some layers' feature activations of each channel tend to encode saliency of scene categories (analogue to class activation mapping), we propose to align features channel-wise between the student and teacher networks. To this end, we first transform the feature map of each channel into a probabilty map using softmax normalization, and then minimize the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence of the corresponding channels of the two networks. By doing so, our method focuses on mimicking the soft distributions of channels between networks. In particular, the KL divergence enables learning to pay more attention to the most salient regions of the channel-wise maps, presumably corresponding to the most useful signals for semantic segmentation. Experiments demonstrate that our channel-wise distillation outperforms almost all existing spatial distillation methods for semantic segmentation considerably, and requires less computational cost during training. We consistently achieve superior performance on three benchmarks with various network structures. Code is available at: https://git.io/Distiller

Physics-informed generative neural network: an application to troposphere temperature prediction

The troposphere is one of the atmospheric layers where most weather phenomena occur. Temperature variations in the troposphere, especially at 500 hPa, a typical level of the middle troposphere, are significant indicators of future weather changes. Numerical weather prediction is effective for temperature prediction, but its computational complexity hinders a timely response. This paper proposes a novel temperature prediction approach in framework ofphysics-informed deep learning. The new model, called PGnet, builds upon a generative neural network with a mask matrix. The mask is designed to distinguish the low-quality predicted regions generated by the first physical stage. The generative neural network takes the mask as prior for the second-stage refined predictions. A mask-loss and a jump pattern strategy are developed to train the generative neural network without accumulating errors during making time-series predictions. Experiments on ERA5 demonstrate that PGnet can generate more refined temperature predictions than the state-of-the-art.

An efficient and secure scheme of verifiable computation for Intel SGX

Cloud computing offers resource-constrained users big-volume data storage and energy-consuming complicated computation. However, owing to the lack of full trust in the cloud, the cloud users prefer privacy-preserving outsourced data computation with correctness verification. However, cryptography-based schemes introduce high computational costs to both the cloud and its users for verifiable computation with privacy preservation, which makes it difficult to support complicated computations in practice. Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) as a trusted execution environment is widely researched in various fields (such as secure data analytics and computation), and is regarded as a promising way to achieve efficient outsourced data computation with privacy preservation over the cloud. But we find two types of threats towards the computation with SGX: Disarranging Data-Related Code threat and Output Tampering and Misrouting threat. In this paper, we depict these threats using formal methods and successfully conduct the two threats on the enclave program constructed by Rust SGX SDK to demonstrate their impacts on the correctness of computations over SGX enclaves. In order to provide countermeasures, we propose an efficient and secure scheme to resist the threats and realize verifiable computation for Intel SGX. We prove the security and show the efficiency and correctness of our proposed scheme through theoretic analysis and extensive experiments. Furthermore, we compare the performance of our scheme with that of some cryptography-based schemes to show its high efficiency.

Emergent Rokhsar-Kivelson point in realistic quantum Ising models

We show that the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point in quantum dimer models (QDM) can emerge in realistic quantum Ising spin systems. Specifically, we investigate the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ transverse field Ising model on the triangular lattice with large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the multicritical point in the phase diagram corresponds to the RK point of the QDM on the honeycomb lattice. We further measure the spectral functions and identify three branches of quadratic dispersions. In the phase diagram, we also find a sequence of incommensurate states, which meet the microscopic ingredients for the 'Cantor deconfinement' scenario. Our study provides a promising direction to realise the RK deconfinement in experimental platforms such as magnetic materials or programmable Rydberg arrays.

Amplitude Mode in Quantum Magnets via Dimensional Crossover

We investigate the amplitude (Higgs) mode associated with longitudinal fluctuations of the order parameter at the continuous spontaneous symmetry breaking phase transition. In quantum magnets, due to the fast decay of the amplitude mode into low-energy Goldstone excitations, direct observation of this mode represents a challenging task. By focusing on a quasi-one-dimensional geometry, we circumvent the difficulty and investigate the amplitude mode in a system of weakly coupled spin chains with the help of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, stochastic analytic continuation, and a chain-mean field approach combined with a mapping to the field-theoretic sine-Gordon model. The amplitude mode is observed to emerge in the longitudinal spin susceptibility in the presence of a weak symmetry-breaking staggered field. A conventional measure of the amplitude mode in higher dimensions, the singlet bond mode, is found to appear at a lower than the amplitude mode frequency. We identify these two excitations with the second (first) breather of the sine-Gordon theory, correspondingly. In contrast to higher-dimensional systems, the amplitude and bond order fluctuations are found to carry significant spectral weight in the quasi-1D limit.

Interpretation-enabled Software Reuse Detection Based on a Multi-Level Birthmark Model

Software reuse, especially partial reuse, poses legal and security threats to software development. Since its source codes are usually unavailable, software reuse is hard to be detected with interpretation. On the other hand, current approaches suffer from poor detection accuracy and efficiency, far from satisfying practical demands. To tackle these problems, in this paper, we propose \textit{ISRD}, an interpretation-enabled software reuse detection approach based on a multi-level birthmark model that contains function level, basic block level, and instruction level. To overcome obfuscation caused by cross-compilation, we represent function semantics with Minimum Branch Path (MBP) and perform normalization to extract core semantics of instructions. For efficiently detecting reused functions, a process for "intent search based on anchor recognition" is designed to speed up reuse detection. It uses strict instruction match and identical library call invocation check to find anchor functions (in short anchors) and then traverses neighbors of the anchors to explore potentially matched function pairs. Extensive experiments based on two real-world binary datasets reveal that \textit{ISRD} is interpretable, effective, and efficient, which achieves $97.2\%$ precision and $94.8\%$ recall. Moreover, it is resilient to cross-compilation, outperforming state-of-the-art approaches.

Higher-form symmetry breaking at Ising transitions

In recent years, new phases of matter that are beyond the Landau paradigm of symmetry breaking are mountaining, and to catch up with this fast development, new notions of global symmetry are introduced. Among them, the higher-form symmetry, whose symmetry charges are spatially extended, can be used to describe topologically ordered phases as the spontaneous breaking of the symmetry, and consequently unify the unconventional and conventional phases under the same conceptual framework. However, such conceptual tools have not been put into quantitative test except for certain solvable models, therefore limiting its usage in the more generic quantum manybody systems. In this work, we study Z2 higher-form symmetry in a quantum Ising model, which is dual to the global (0-form) Ising symmetry. We compute the expectation value of the Ising disorder operator, which is a non-local order parameter for the higher-form symmetry, analytically in free scalar theories and through unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the interacting fixed point in (2+1)d. From the scaling form of this extended object, we confirm that the higher-form symmetry is indeed spontaneously broken inside the paramagnetic, or quantum disordered phase (in the Landau sense), but remains symmetric in the ferromagnetic/ordered phase. At the Ising critical point, we find that the higher-form symmetry is also spontaneously broken, even though the 0-form symmetry is preserved. We discuss examples where both the global 0-form symmetry and the dual higher-form symmetry are preserved, in systems with a codimension-1 manifold of gapless points in momentum space. These results provide non-trivial working examples of higher-form symmetry operators, including the first computation of one-form order parameter in an interacting conformal field theory, and open the avenue for their generic implementation in quantum many-body systems.

Phase Diagram of Triangular Lattice Quantum Ising Model under External Field

Quantum Ising model on a triangular lattice hosts a finite temperature Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase with emergent U(1) symmetry, and it will transit into an up-up-down (UUD) phase with $C_3$ symmetry breaking upon an infinitesimal external field along the longitudinal direction, but the overall phase diagram spanned by the axes of external field and temperature remains opaque due to the lack of systematic invesitgations with controlled methodologies. By means of quantum Monte Carlo at finite temperature and ground state density matrix renormalization group simulations, we map out the phase diagram of triangular quantum Ising model. Stemming from the upper BKT temperature at zero field, we obtain the phase boundary between the UUD and paramagnetic phases with its 2D $q=3$ Potts universality at weak field and weakly first order transition at strong field. Originated from the lower BKT temperature at zero field, we analyze the low temperature phase boundary between the clock phase and the UUD phase with Ising symmetry breaking at weak fields and the quantum phase transition between the UUD and fully polarized phases at strong fields. The accurate many-body numerical results are consistent with our field theoretical analysis. The experimental relevance towards the BKT magnet TmMgGaO$_4$ and programmable quantum simulators are also discussed.

Topological phase transition and single/multi anyon dynamics of $Z_2$ spin liquid

Among the quantum many-body models that host anyon excitation and topological orders, quantum dimer models (QDM) provide a unique playground for studying the relation between single-anyon and multi-anyon continuum spectra. However, as the prototypical correlated system with local constraints, the generic solution of QDM at different lattice geometry and parameter regimes is still missing due to the lack of controlled methodologies. Here we obtain, via the newly developed sweeping cluster quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, the excitation spectra in different phases of the triangular lattice QDM. Our results reveal the single vison excitations inside the $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid (QSL) and its condensation towards the $\sqrt{12}\times\sqrt{12}$ valence bond solid (VBS), and demonstrate the translational symmetry fractionalization and emergent O(4) symmetry at the QSL-VBS transition. We find the single vison excitations, whose convolution qualitatively reproduces the dimer spectra, are not free but subject to interaction effects throughout the transition. The nature of the VBS with its O(4) order parameters are unearthed in full scope. Our approach opens the avenue for generic solution of the static and dynamic properties of QDMs and has relevance towards the realization and detection of fractional excitations in programmable quantum simulators.

Widely existing mixed phase structure of quantum dimer model on square lattice

Since constraints hinder the application of numerical algorithms, phase diagrams of quantum dimer models are still controversial, even on the square lattice. The core controversy is whether the mixed state exists. In this article, we give strong evidences to solve this dispute. With our newly developed sweeping cluster method, we studied the phase diagram of large parameter space by introducing the definition of pair correlation function and other supporting evidence to distinguish the mixed phase from the columnar phase with high precision. In particular, we find that the ground state corresponds to the mixed phase for a vast parameter region.

PAC-Bayes Bounds for Meta-learning with Data-Dependent Prior

By leveraging experience from previous tasks, meta-learning algorithms can achieve effective fast adaptation ability when encountering new tasks. However it is unclear how the generalization property applies to new tasks. Probably approximately correct (PAC) Bayes bound theory provides a theoretical framework to analyze the generalization performance for meta-learning. We derive three novel generalisation error bounds for meta-learning based on PAC-Bayes relative entropy bound. Furthermore, using the empirical risk minimization (ERM) method, a PAC-Bayes bound for meta-learning with data-dependent prior is developed. Experiments illustrate that the proposed three PAC-Bayes bounds for meta-learning guarantee a competitive generalization performance guarantee, and the extended PAC-Bayes bound with data-dependent prior can achieve rapid convergence ability.

Vestigial anyon condensation in kagome quantum spin liquids

We construct a lattice model of topological order (kagome quantum spin liquids) and solve it with unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A three-stage anyon condensation with two transitions from a $\mathbb Z_2\boxtimes\mathbb Z_2$ topological order to a $\mathbb Z_2$ topological order and eventually to a trivial symmetric phase is revealed. These results provide concrete examples of phase transitions between topological orders in quantum magnets. The designed quantum spin liquid model and its numerical solution offer a playground for further investigations on vestigial anyon condensation.

GenCos' Behaviors Modeling Based on Q Learning Improved by Dichotomy

Q learning is widely used to simulate the behaviors of generation companies (GenCos) in an electricity market. However, existing Q learning method usually requires numerous iterations to converge, which is time-consuming and inefficient in practice. To enhance the calculation efficiency, a novel Q learning algorithm improved by dichotomy is proposed in this paper. This method modifies the update process of the Q table by dichotomizing the state space and the action space step by step. Simulation results in a repeated Cournot game show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
