Seismic-Net: A Deep Densely Connected Neural Network to Detect Seismic Events

One of the risks of large-scale geologic carbon sequestration is the potential migration of fluids out of the storage formations. Accurate and fast detection of this fluids migration is not only important but also challenging, due to the large subsurface uncertainty and complex governing physics. Traditional leakage detection and monitoring techniques rely on geophysical observations including seismic. However, the resulting accuracy of these methods is limited because of indirect information they provide requiring expert interpretation, therefore yielding in-accurate estimates of leakage rates and locations. In this work, we develop a novel machine-learning detection package, named "Seismic-Net", which is based on the deep densely connected neural network. To validate the performance of our proposed leakage detection method, we employ our method to a natural analog site at Chimayó, New Mexico. The seismic events in the data sets are generated because of the eruptions of geysers, which is due to the leakage of $\mathrm{CO}_\mathrm{2}$. In particular, we demonstrate the efficacy of our Seismic-Net by formulating our detection problem as an event detection problem with time series data. A fixed-length window is slid throughout the time series data and we build a deep densely connected network to classify each window to determine if a geyser event is included. Through our numerical tests, we show that our model achieves precision/recall as high as 0.889/0.923. Therefore, our Seismic-Net has a great potential for detection of $\mathrm{CO}_\mathrm{2}$ leakage.

IREXF: Data Exfiltration from Air-gapped Networks by Infrared Remote Control Signals

he technology on infrared remote control is widely applied in human daily life. It is also applied in the place with a top security level. Infrared remote control signal is regarded as a simple, safe and clean resource that can help us control the electrical appliances nearby. In this paper, we build IREXF, a novel infrared optical covert channel from a well-protected air-gapped network via a malicious infrared module implanted previously into a keyboard. A malware preinstalled in the air-gapped PC receives the data from the malicious infrared module to study the infrared surroundings in the air-gapped network. Once a suitable appliance is found, infrared remote control commands will be sent in a proper time. With the development of technology on Internet of Things, more and more electrical appliances can access Internet. Those infrared command signals exfiltrating out of the air-gapped network can be received by an appliance without any malicious configuration. In our experiment, via a smart TV set-top box, the rate of the covert channel can be up to 2.62 bits per second without any further optimization. Finally, we give a list of countermeasures to detect and eliminate this kind of covert channels.

On the maximal ideal space of even quasicontinuous functions on the unit circle

Let $PQC$ stand for the set of all piecewise quasicontionus function on the unit circle, i.e., the smallest closed subalgebra of $L^\infty(\mathbb{T})$ which contains the classes of all piecewise continuous function $PC$ and all quasicontinuous functions $QC=(C+H^\infty)\cap(C+\overline{H^\infty})$. We analyze the fibers of the maximal ideal spaces $M(PQC)$ and $M(QC)$ over maximal ideals from $M(\widetilde{QC})$, where $\widetilde{QC}$ stands for the $C^*$-algebra of all even quasicontinous functions. The maximal ideal space $M(\widetilde{QC})$ is decribed and partitioned into various subsets corresponding to different descriptions of the fibers.

Cascaded Region-based Densely Connected Network for Event Detection: A Seismic Application

Automatic event detection from time series signals has wide applications, such as abnormal event detection in video surveillance and event detection in geophysical data. Traditional detection methods detect events primarily by the use of similarity and correlation in data. Those methods can be inefficient and yield low accuracy. In recent years, because of the significantly increased computational power, machine learning techniques have revolutionized many science and engineering domains. In this study, we apply a deep-learning-based method to the detection of events from time series seismic signals. However, a direct adaptation of the similar ideas from 2D object detection to our problem faces two challenges. The first challenge is that the duration of earthquake event varies significantly; The other is that the proposals generated are temporally correlated. To address these challenges, we propose a novel cascaded region-based convolutional neural network to capture earthquake events in different sizes, while incorporating contextual information to enrich features for each individual proposal. To achieve a better generalization performance, we use densely connected blocks as the backbone of our network. Because of the fact that some positive events are not correctly annotated, we further formulate the detection problem as a learning-from-noise problem. To verify the performance of our detection methods, we employ our methods to seismic data generated from a bi-axial "earthquake machine" located at Rock Mechanics Laboratory, and we acquire labels with the help of experts. Through our numerical tests, we show that our novel detection techniques yield high accuracy. Therefore, our novel deep-learning-based detection methods can potentially be powerful tools for locating events from time series data in various applications.

Exfiltration of Data from Air-gapped Networks via Unmodulated LED Status Indicators

The light-emitting diode(LED) is widely used as an indicator on the information device. Early in 2002, Loughry et al studied the exfiltration of LED indicators and found the kind of LEDs unmodulated to indicate some state of the device can hardly be utilized to establish covert channels. In our paper, a novel approach is proposed to modulate this kind of LEDs. We use binary frequency shift keying(B-FSK) to replace on-off keying(OOK) in modulation. In order to verify the validity, we implement a prototype of an exfiltration malware. Our experiment show a great improvement in the imperceptibility of covert communication. It is available to leak data covertly from air-gapped networks via unmodulated LED status indicators.

Detecting Faces Using Region-based Fully Convolutional Networks

Face detection has achieved great success using the region-based methods. In this report, we propose a region-based face detector applying deep networks in a fully convolutional fashion, named Face R-FCN. Based on Region-based Fully Convolutional Networks (R-FCN), our face detector is more accurate and computational efficient compared with the previous R-CNN based face detectors. In our approach, we adopt the fully convolutional Residual Network (ResNet) as the backbone network. Particularly, We exploit several new techniques including position-sensitive average pooling, multi-scale training and testing and on-line hard example mining strategy to improve the detection accuracy. Over two most popular and challenging face detection benchmarks, FDDB and WIDER FACE, Face R-FCN achieves superior performance over state-of-the-arts.

Experiments on bright field and dark field high energy electron imaging with thick target material

Using a high energy electron beam for the imaging of high density matter with both high spatial-temporal and areal density resolution under extreme states of temperature and pressure is one of the critical challenges in high energy density physics . When a charged particle beam passes through an opaque target, the beam will be scattered with a distribution that depends on the thickness of the material. By collecting the scattered beam either near or off axis, so-called bright field or dark field images can be obtained. Here we report on an electron radiography experiment using 45 MeV electrons from an S-band photo-injector, where scattered electrons, after interacting with a sample, are collected and imaged by a quadrupole imaging system. We achieved a few micrometers (about 4 micrometers) spatial resolution and about 10 micrometers thickness resolution for a silicon target of 300-600 micron thickness. With addition of dark field images that are captured by selecting electrons with large scattering angle, we show that more useful information in determining external details such as outlines, boundaries and defects can be obtained.

Floquet control of the gain and loss in a PT-symmetric optical coupler

Controlling the balanced gain and loss in a PT-symmetric system is a rather challenging task. Utilizing Floquet theory, we explore the constructive role of periodic modulation in controlling the gain and loss of a PT-symmetric optical coupler. It is found that the gain and loss of the system can be manipulated by applying a periodic modulation. Further, such an original non-Hermitian system can even be modulated into an effective Hermitian system derived by the high-frequency Floquet method. Therefore, compared with other PT symmetry control schemes, our protocol can modulate the unbroken PT-symmetric range to a wider parameter region. Our results provide a promising approach for controlling the gain and loss of a realistic system.

Non-classical photon correlation in a two-dimensional photonic lattice

Quantum interference and quantum correlation, as two main features of quantum optics, play an essential role in quantum information applications, such as multi-particle quantum walk and boson sampling. While many experimental demonstrations have been done in one-dimensional waveguide arrays, it remains unexplored in higher dimensions due to tight requirement of manipulating and detecting photons in large-scale. Here, we experimentally observe non-classical correlation of two identical photons in a fully coupled two-dimensional structure, i.e. photonic lattice manufactured by three-dimensional femtosecond laser writing. Photon interference consists of 36 Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and 9 bunching. The overlap between measured and simulated distribution is up to $0.890\pm0.001$. Clear photon correlation is observed in the two-dimensional photonic lattice. Combining with controllably engineered disorder, our results open new perspectives towards large-scale implementation of quantum simulation on integrated photonic chips.

Wireless-Powered Cooperative Communications: Power-Splitting Relaying with Energy Accumulation

A harvest-use-store power splitting (PS) relaying strategy with distributed beamforming is proposed for wirelesspowered multi-relay cooperative networks in this paper. Different from the conventional battery-free PS relaying strategy, harvested energy is prioritized to power information relaying while the remainder is accumulated and stored for future usage with the help of a battery in the proposed strategy, which supports an efficient utilization of harvested energy. However, PS affects throughput at subsequent time slots due to the battery operations including the charging and discharging. To this end, PS and battery operations are coupled with distributed beamforming. A throughput optimization problem to incorporate these coupled operations is formulated though it is intractable. To address the intractability of the optimization,a layered optimization method is proposed to achieve the optimal joint PS and battery operation design with non-causal channel state information (CSI), in which the PS and the battery operation can be analyzed in a decomposed manner. Then, a general case with causal CSI is considered, where the proposed layered optimization method is extended by utilizing the statistical properties of CSI. To reach a better tradeoff between performance and complexity, a greedy method that requires no information about subsequent time slots is proposed. Simulation results reveal the upper and lower bound on performance of the proposed strategy, which are reached by the layered optimization method with non-causal CSI and the greedy method, respectively. Moreover, the proposed strategy outperforms the conventional PS-based relaying without energy accumulation and time switching-based relaying strategy.

Experimental demonstration of quantum key distribution without monitoring of the signal disturbance

Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables two distant users, Alice and Bob, to share secret keys. In existing QKD protocols, an eavesdropper's intervention will inevitably disturb the quantum signals; thus, Alice and Bob must monitor the signal disturbance to place a bound on the potential information leakage. However, T. Sasaki et al. proposed a quite different protocol, named round-robin differential phase shift (RRDPS), in which the amount of eavesdropped information is bounded without monitoring the signal disturbance. Here, we present the first active implementation of the RRDPS protocol. In our experiment, Alice prepares packets of pulses, with each packet being a train with 65 pulses, and the global phase of each packet is randomized. Bob uses a 1-GHz, 1-64-bit actively controlled variable-delay interferometer to realize random switching of the different delays. Benefiting from the large pulse number of each packet, the high stability and low insertion loss of the interferometer, the system can distribute secret key over a distance of 90 km. Our results confirm the feasibility of performing practical QKD with this novel protocol.

Joint Power Splitting and Antenna Selection in Energy Harvesting Relay Channels

The simultaneous wireless transfer of information and power with the help of a relay equipped with multiple antennas is considered in this letter, where a harvest-and-forward strategy is proposed. In particular, the relay harvests energy and obtains information from the source with the radio-frequent signals by jointly using the antenna selection (AS) and power splitting (PS) techniques, and then the processed information is amplified and forwarded to the destination relying on the harvested energy. This letter jointly optimizes AS and PS to maximize the achievable rate for the proposed strategy. Considering the joint optimization is according to the non-convex problem, a two-stage procedure is proposed to determine the optimal ratio of received signal power split for energy harvesting, and the optimized antenna set engaged in information forwarding. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of the two-stage procedure, and demonstrate that the proposed harvest-and-forward strategy outperforms the conventional amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying and the direct transmission.

Field and long-term demonstration of a wide area quantum key distribution network

A wide area quantum key distribution (QKD) network deployed on communication infrastructures provided by China Mobile Ltd. is demonstrated. Three cities and two metropolitan area QKD networks were linked up to form the Hefei-Chaohu-Wuhu wide area QKD network with over 150 kilometers coverage area, in which Hefei metropolitan area QKD network was a typical full-mesh core network to offer all-to-all interconnections, and Wuhu metropolitan area QKD network was a representative quantum access network with point-to-multipoint configuration. The whole wide area QKD network ran for more than 5000 hours, from 21 December 2011 to 19 July 2012, and part of the network stopped until last December. To adapt to the complex and volatile field environment, the Faraday-Michelson QKD system with several stability measures was adopted when we designed QKD devices. Through standardized design of QKD devices, resolution of symmetry problem of QKD devices, and seamless switching in dynamic QKD network, we realized the effective integration between point-to-point QKD techniques and networking schemes.

Second order tunneling of two interacting bosons in a driven triple well

We investigate quantum tunneling of two repulsive bosons in a triple-well potential subject to a high-frequency driving field. By means of the multiple-time-scale asymptotic analysis, we evidence a far-resonant strongly-interacting regime in which the selected coherent destruction of tunneling can occur between the paired states and unpaired states, and the dominant tunneling of the paired states is a second order process. Two Floquet quasienergy bands of the both kinds of states are given analytically, where a fine structure up to the second order corrections is displayed. The analytical results are confirmed numerically based on the exact model, and may be particularly relevant to controlling correlated tunneling in experiments.

Coherent control via interplay between driving field and two-body interaction in a double well

We investigate interplay between external field and interatomic interaction and its applications to coherent control of quantum tunneling for two repulsive bosons confined in a high-frequency driven double well. A full solution of the system is generated analytically as a coherent non-Floquet state by using the Floquet states as a set of complete bases. It is demonstrated that the photon resonance of interaction leads to translation of the Floquet level-crossing points, and the non-resonant interaction causes avoided crossing of partial levels. In the non-Floquet states, the bosons beyond the crossing points slowly vary their populations, and the resonant (non-resonant) interactions enhance (decrease) the tunneling rate of the paired particles. Three different kinds of the coherent destructions of tunneling (CDT) at the crossing, avoided-crossing and uncrossing points, and the corresponding stationary-like states, are illustrated. The analytical results are numerically confirmed and perfect agreements are found. Based on the results, an useful scheme of quantum tunneling switch between stationary-like states is presented.

We propose a wavelength-saving topology of quantum key distribution(QKD) network based on passive optical elements, and report the field test of this network on the commercial telecom optical fiber. In this network, 5 nodes are supported with 2 wavelengths, and every two nodes can share secure keys directly at the same time. All QKD links in the network operate at the frequency of 20 MHz. We also characterized the insertion loss and crosstalk effects on the point-to-point QKD system after introducing this QKD network.

2-GHz clock quantum key distribution over 260 km of standard telecom fiber

We report a demonstration of quantum key distribution (QKD) over a standard telecom fiber exceeding 50 dB in loss and 250 km in length. The differential phase shift QKD protocol was chosen and implemented with 2 GHz system clock rate. By careful optimization of the 1-bit delayed Faraday-Michelson interferometer and the use of the super-conducting single photon detector (SSPD), we achieved a quantum bit error rate below 2% when the fiber length was no more than 205 km, and of 3.45% for the 260 km length fiber with 52.9 dB loss. We also improved the quantum efficiency of SSPD to obtain high key rate for 50 km length.

Attacking practical quantum key distribution system with wavelength dependent beam splitter and multi-wavelength sources

Unconditional security of quantum key distribution protocol can be guaranteed by the basic property of quantum mechanics. Unfortunately, the practical quantum key distribution system always have some imperfections, and the practical system may be attacked if the imperfection can be controlled by the eavesdropper Eve. Applying the fatal security loophole introduced by the imperfect beam splitter's wavelength dependent optical property, we propose wavelength-dependent attacking model, which can be applied to almost all practical quantum key distribution systems with the passive state modulation and photon state detection after the practical beam splitter. Utilizing our attacking model, we experimentally demonstrate the attacking system based on practical polarization encoding quantum key distribution system with almost 100% success probability. Our result demonstrate that all practical devices require tightened security inspection for avoiding side channel attacks in practical quantum key distribution experimental realizations.
