On the prescribing $σ_2$ curvature equation on $\mathbb S^4$

Prescribing $σ_k$ curvature equations are fully nonlinear generalizations of the prescribing Gaussian or scalar curvature equations. Given a positive function $K$ to be prescribed on the 4-dimensional round sphere. We obtain asymptotic profile analysis for potentially blowing up solutions to the $σ_2$ curvature equation with the given $K$; and rule out the possibility of blowing up solutions when $K$ satisfies a non-degeneracy condition. We also prove uniform a priori estimates for solutions to a family of $σ_2$ curvature equations deforming $K$ to a positive constant under the same non-degeneracy condition on $K$, and prove the existence of a solution using degree argument to this deformation involving fully nonlinear elliptic operators under an additional, natural degree condition on a finite dimensional map associated with $K$.

Two Kazdan-Warner type identities for the renormalized volume coefficients and the Gauss-Bonnet curvatures of a Riemannian metric

In this note, we prove two Kazdan-Warner type identities involving $v^{(2k)}$, the renormalized volume coefficients of a Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$, and $G_{2r}$, the so-called Gauss-Bonnet curvature, and a conformal Killing vector field on $(M^n,g)$. In the case when the Riemannian manifold is locally conformally flat, $v^{(2k)}=(-2)^{-k}σ_k$, $G_{2r}(g)=\frac{4^r(n-r)!r!}{(n-2r)!}σ_r$, and our results reduce to earlier ones established by Viaclovsky and by the second author.

Asymptotic behavior of solutions to the $σ_k$-Yamabe equation near isolated singularities

$σ_k$-Yamabe equations are conformally invariant equations generalizing the classical Yamabe equation. In an earlier work YanYan Li proved that an admissible solution with an isolated singularity at $0\in \mathbb R^n$ to the $σ_k$-Yamabe equation is asymptotically radially symmetric. In this work we prove that an admissible solution with an isolated singularity at $0\in \mathbb R^n$ to the $σ_k$-Yamabe equation is asymptotic to a radial solution to the same equation on $\mathbb R^n \setminus \{0\}$. These results generalize earlier pioneering work in this direction on the classical Yamabe equation by Caffarelli, Gidas, and Spruck. In extending the work of Caffarelli et al, we formulate and prove a general asymptotic approximation result for solutions to certain ODEs which include the case for scalar curvature and $σ_k$ curvature cases. An alternative proof is also provided using analysis of the linearized operators at the radial solutions, along the lines of approach in a work by Korevaar, Mazzeo, Pacard, and Schoen.

Local pointwise estimates for solutions of the $σ_2$ curvature equation on 4 manifolds

The study of the $k$-th elementary symmetric function of the Weyl-Schouten curvature tensor of a Riemannian metric, the so called $σ_k$ curvature, has produced many fruitful results in conformal geometry in recent years, especially when the dimension of the underlying manifold is 3 or 4. In these studies, the deforming conformal factor is considered to be a solution of a fully nonlinear elliptic PDE. Important advances have been made in recent years in the understanding of the analytic behavior of solutions of the PDE, including the adaptation of Bernstein type estimates in integral form, global and local derivative estimates, classification of entire solutions and analysis of blowing up solutoins. Most of these results require derivative bounds on the $σ_k$ curvature. The derivative estimates also require an a priori $L^{\infty}$ bound on the solution. This work provides local $L^{\infty}$ and Harnack estimates for solutions of the $σ_2$ curvature equation on 4 manifolds, under only $L^p$ bounds on the $σ_2$ curvature, and the natural assumption of small volume(or total $σ_2$ curvature).

Classification of singular radial solutions to the $σ_k$ Yamabe equation on annular domains

The study of the $k$-th elementary symmetric function of the Weyl-Schouten curvature tensor of a Riemannian metric, the so called $σ_k$ curvature, has produced many fruitful results in conformal geometry in recent years. In these studies, the deforming conformal factor is considered to be a solution of a fully nonlinear elliptic PDE. Important advances have been made in recent years in the understanding of the analytic behavior of solutions of the PDE. However, the singular behavior of these solutions, which is important in describing many important questions in conformal geometry, is little understood. This note classifies all possible radial solutions, in particular, the \emph{singular} solutions of the $σ_k$ Yamabe equation, which describes conformal metrics whose $σ_k$ curvature equals a constant. Although the analysis involved is of elementary nature, these results should provide useful guidance in studying the behavior of singular solutions in the general situation.
